Monk Shenxiu represents the gradual cultivation method, which originated from the four ancestors of Taoism and completed in the five ancestors Hongren, commonly known as 'chanting Buddha Zen'. The foundation of his practice lies in promoting the Zen method without words through the text of Buddhist scriptures, so that all those who have the intention to seek Buddha can embark on the path of cultivation. It doesn't matter about qualifications, it doesn't matter about Buddha nature, as long as you have the heart to seek Buddhahood.

Historically, this is the 'gradual cultivation' method that represents the Northern Zen sect.

Therefore, from the perspective of Buddhism, the true successor of the Dongshan method of Zen Buddhism is Shenxiu. And not Huineng.

Huineng's practice method actually belongs to the patriarchal method of the Buddha's lineage, 'imprinting the heart with the heart, not writing words'. It has detached itself from the scriptures of Rulai and restored the true nature of Zen Buddhism. South and north. It's hard to say which is higher or lower. In terms of relieving the suffering, gradual cultivation is more suitable for the general public. It was only later that the Enlightenment Sect represented by Hui Neng triumphed, and eventually made Zen Buddhism more and more confined to a few people, and the majority of people could not touch it.
