Chapter 373: Officer Gap

Seeing the shortage of officers in the report, Lin Zhe had a headache, and the shortage of officers has never been really solved, because the number of officers trained by the previous camp academy and the current army military academy has never kept up with the expansion of the Chinese army.

In order to control the number of officers, not only did many Royal Army units lack deputy positions, but the auxiliary defense divisions were even more compressed, and many auxiliary defense divisions had only one major under their commander.

The commander of an infantry regiment in the Royal Army is at least a lieutenant colonel, and some of them are colonels, but the division commander of the Ninth Auxiliary Defense Division is only a lieutenant colonel, and the regiment commander is just a major, and the battalion commander is only a captain, and there is even such a thing as a lieutenant battalion commander.

In order to regulate the operations of the Ninth and Nineteenth Auxiliary Defense Divisions, in fact, the military headquarters to which they belong sent senior officers to command, for example, the Sixth Army sent a deputy chief of staff and a team of about 10 officers to the Ninth Auxiliary Defense Division to command the Ninth Auxiliary Defense Division.

Strictly speaking, the deputy chief of staff of the Sixth Army does not have the authority to command the Ninth Auxiliary Defense Division, and now it is only carried out by relying on the military's internal tacit understanding and military rank system, but that day, the lieutenant colonel and division commander of the Ninth Auxiliary Defense Division felt that the colonel and deputy chief of staff from your army headquarters were nothing more than that, and even felt that the officers at all levels you brought over were in the way, and they could directly drive you out. And you really can't say anything about this situation for the current military system of the Chinese army.

Because of the commander responsibility system implemented by the Chinese army. And as long as the military does not remove the division commander from his post, then you cannot replace him and directly command the division. Even if it's just an assistant division.

To change the command of the Ninth Auxiliary Defense Division, either the headquarters sent another division commander over, or Shi Qingxuan directly overtook the command and personally commanded the division, and obtained the command by ordering the Ninth Auxiliary Defense Division.

However, the situation on the side of the Ninth Auxiliary Defense Division is rather special; according to the current system of the Chinese Army's auxiliary defense division, the number of officers attached to it is small, the rank is low, and a dignified division commander is only a lieutenant colonel.

However, the reality is that the 9th Assistant Defense Division is no longer an ordinary Assistant Defense Division. The soldiers were mainly prisoners of the new army of the Qing army, equipped with flintlock pistols, artillery and other weapons, such the Ninth Auxiliary Defense Division was already a veritable new army unit, even Shi Qingxuan, who was strict with the troops, used the Ninth Auxiliary Defense Division as the main force, and was sent out separately to cover the right flank of the Eighth and Ninth Divisions.

Therefore, the officer system of the Ninth Auxiliary Defense Division cannot be arranged in the same way as other auxiliary defense divisions, and it is necessary to change the officer system of the Ninth Auxiliary Defense Division, raise the military ranks of the chief officers of various departments, and increase the number of officers.

It can't be the same captain, the captain of the Royal Army is just a company commander. He commanded only more than 100 people to fight, and the captain of the 9th Auxiliary Defense Division had to plan the battle plan of more than 7,000 people.

However, in order to fill the officer gap in the 9th and 19th Auxiliary Defense Divisions, it is also necessary to fill the officer gap in other units, such as the newly expanded garrison units in various localities. Another example is the training of officers needed for a few mixed brigades and other units, which is not so easy, because the Chinese army simply does not have so many qualified officers.

Over the past few years. Although the Army Military Academy is getting bigger and bigger, it has graduated six classes of students. However, in fact, it could not meet the actual needs of the Chinese army.

Since the days of the camp academy, due to the recruitment of cadets every month. Therefore, this certain period of students can not be used as a reference to the enrollment time, but to the graduation time as a reference, before the reform in 1855, it was a half-year graduation period, a total of four graduations, and a year after the reform, one graduation period, has graduated three times.

That is to say, from the beginning of the era of the Suiying Academy to the current Army Military Academy, there have been a total of seven formal classes of students who graduated, namely the first to the fourth phase of the Suiying Academy, and the first to the third phase of the Army Military Academy.

The graduates of these seven formal classes have provided the Chinese army with about 2,300 qualified officers who have passed systematic training.

At present, those who hold middle and senior positions in the Chinese army are generally students in the first three phases of the Suiying Academy era, and in terms of generals, this is mainly the first period, and part of the second period, as for the third period, only Lin Wei has been promoted to major general, and most of the others are still at the level of school officers.

However, it is worth noting that the total number of students in the four phases of the Suiying Academy era before the restructuring was not large, and the total was only more than 600 people, but after the restructuring, there were more than 400 students in the first phase, more than 600 in the second phase, and more than 800 students in the third phase.

It is expected that the fourth batch of graduation next summer may be as high as more than 1,000 people!

As the saying goes, scarcity is expensive, the earlier the graduation time, the higher the gold content, because they have accumulated more experience, and at the same time, they have less competition when they are promoted, and they will not be like the students behind them, and it is much more difficult for more than 800 or even 1,000 people to stand out in the same period.

The total strength of the Chinese Army's current Royal Army, the Auxiliary Defense Force, and the garrison force together is already more than 350,000 people, and with so many people, it is certainly not enough to rely on the current 2,300 or so graduates of the regular class.

Therefore, in addition to the above-mentioned seven formal classes, in fact, there are many irregular, indefinite various crash courses, there are ordinary crash courses for soldiers who have been recommended by officers or have been temporarily promoted in battle, and then have been regularized, the number of such crash courses is quite large, the school system used to be one month, but now it is only three months, and large classes are adopted, and each class will have sixty or seventy or even hundreds of people to listen to the class.

The teaching content is relatively simple, mainly simple company-platoon-level tactics. And these crash course graduates also form the main group of grassroots officers in the Chinese army.

In addition to this regular crash course, there are many messy crash courses, such as the cavalry crash course, the baggage crash course. Artillery crash courses and the like, and even a crash course in construction. Specialized in teaching how to build barracks.

And then there's the ordnance, logistics. There are even subjects that have nothing to do with war command, such as the finance class, which teaches accounting, and the gun class, which teaches how to design and maintain machinery and equipment. Another example is the translation version, which is to train foreign language talents, and prepare to use them to communicate with foreign militaries, etc., but dozens of people trained by this are either poached by the Imperial University or robbed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The military itself failed to leave any of them.

Some of these chaotic crash courses will be held for several sessions, while others will only be held for one term, and there are all kinds of projects, so complicated that even the military is difficult to count; basically, the troops feel that they need relatively out-of-the-ordinary talents, and when they cannot be recruited from outside, and when the students of the regular classes cannot be satisfied, they will often open a relevant crash course to train themselves.

The above-mentioned formal classes, regular crash courses, and all sorts of messy crash courses. It is the main officer training system of the Imperial Chinese Army, but in addition to this, there is a relatively special existence, that is, the early class of the Army Military Academy!

This infant class may not have a good reputation among the common people. Many people have not even heard of it, but it is very famous among the middle and high-level military and political officials in the empire, because quite a few military bigwigs will send young children who try to join the army into the infant class. Even some civil servants will selectively send a few children to study.

In the beginning, the kindergarten was actually just a nursery school, because it was originally intended to solve the problem of educating the children of middle and high-ranking officials and generals. The descendants of many officials and generals are not very old and cannot directly apply for the Suiying Academy. So I simply set up a junior class to recruit younger officials and generals for the younger generations.

However, the reason why this infant class is more famous in the middle and upper echelons of the empire and attracts many middle and high-level military and political dignitaries to send their descendants into it is because Lin Zhe has advocated the concept of training from an early age more than once in public, saying that not only ordinary talents need to be cultivated from an early age, but also military talents need to be cultivated from an early age, and has repeatedly said that in the future, students in the early class will be given better space and opportunities.

In addition to the average quality of the students in the first few infant classes, the students who graduated last year were not only exempted from the examination to directly enter the military academies of the navy and the army because of their excellent overall quality, but they could even be selected to obtain the qualifications to study abroad.

In the second half of this year, after the end of the war between the empire and Britain and France, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the military took joint action to send a total of 50 military students to Britain, France, Prussia and the United States.

The reason why half of the students in the kindergarten class occupy half of the quota is because of the unique educational mechanism of the kindergarten class, and the recruits are all intelligent teenagers around the age of thirteen or fourteen, and according to the different age of admission, they will receive a fully closed modern education for four to five years, and generally they will not enter the army officer school until they are 18 years old, or they will be directly selected to study abroad at public expense and enter foreign military academies.

In particular, there were seventeen or eighteen-year-old students in the early periods, and these older students only studied for one or two years before entering the military academy, and they had less time to receive education.

However, after 1855, students over the age of 15 were no longer recruited, and students between the ages of 13 and 14 were basically recruited, and these students who began to enter at the age of thirteen or fourteen received at least four years of systematic education.

The batch of students graduating this year are basically students who enrolled in 1853 and 1854 and have received a four-year or even five-year systematic education, and their comprehensive quality, whether it is comprehensive scientific knowledge or military knowledge, far exceeds that of students trained by other schools in China at present.

For example, the same students who graduated this year, but the graduation of the Army Military Academy is considered to be a graduation, but whether it is the level of scientific knowledge or the military level, it is far inferior to these teenagers in the kindergarten class.

Moreover, it is very important that the students in the kindergarten class generally master more than one foreign language, such as English, French, German, and Spanish, and although there is a translation course in the military academy, not all students have to learn this.

If you want to study abroad, the gap between knowing a foreign language and learning it in another country's country is naturally relatively large.

For these military talents who have been cultivated since childhood and systematically, it is natural and certain to reuse, Lin Zhe does this, outsiders can naturally see it, and they will maintain enthusiasm and continue to send age-appropriate children to the kindergarten class, of course, the premise is that your children can be admitted.
