Chapter 9: Extreme Cold
Returning from a long, deep dream, Lynn's first subconscious judgment was where she was: the cold in the dark and claustrophobic space, could it be that she had returned to the winter night before the time travel?
The body is still weak and weak, but without the overwhelmed fatigue before, Lynn thought that he had really returned to the modern era, and suddenly he was a little shocked, a little stunned, and even a little reluctant. After a moment's pause, the soreness and numbness he felt in his shoulders and legs made him feel a sudden sense of relief, and he reluctantly raised his left hand and touched the cold metal, and then, his movements woke up the others, and the man suddenly burst out of his mouth a German sentence: "Sir Gargo, you are awake!" β
In her dreams, she used her Chinese to talk to people, and Lynn had to adjust her mind to the German-speaking environment, and as she thought about it, she said, "Oh, I'm ...... How long did you sleep? β
The man immediately replied, "Three days!" β
After a cursory search in her memory, Lynn realized that it was Brewer, the most nimble of the six soldiers under her command.
"Three days...... It's been a long time! β
"Yes, fortunately, the medic said that you are normal and sleepy, otherwise we would all have to worry about it!" Brewer said with a smile, and then the voices of Noah, Tanze, and Titchmel came from the darkness in turn:
"Is the chief awake?"
"Sir, how do you feel?"
"Sir, are you alright?"
The care of his subordinates made Lynn feel a faint warmth in his heart, and he settled down, and determined the cold of the surrounding environment with the cold and sour feeling of his nose. It seems that the submarine continued to move north for the past three days, and thus entered the cold region at high latitudes.
"Well, it's so much better than before, we'...... Where is this? β
Brewer replied, "I heard...... Yesterday we left the North Sea and entered the Norwegian Sea, and now it seems to be sailing in a north-easterly direction! β
"Oh!" Lynn's rough estimate based on the map of Europe in his memory shows that the submarine is still sailing in the waters of Norway -- the northwestern coastline of this Nordic country is more than 1,600 kilometers, that is, nearly 1,000 nautical miles, and with a surface speed of less than 20 knots for an ordinary submarine, this section of the Norwegian Sea coast alone would have taken at least three days, not to mention that they had only entered the Norwegian Sea a day earlier!
"Sir, drink some water!" Brewer had already unscrewed the lid of the kettle, poured a little water into it, and carefully brought it to Lynn's mouth. Lynn stretched her neck forward slightly, and drank the water smoothly. Although it is not a liquid of elixir, the cold taste has an obvious refreshing effect. I warmed it in my mouth, and then I swallowed it, and my empty stomach was like a wilderness that had been in drought for many years, and it was finally moistened by the rain, and the feeling was wonderful.
"I'm thirsty!" Still smiling and in a good mood, Brewer poured another pot of water and said, "When you are asleep, we take turns feeding you water, and we are afraid of choking you, so we only put a few drops on our lips each time!" β
The brothers were kind to themselves, Lynn should have kept it in mind, and drank another sip of ice water, and he sighed: "It's so cold!" The water in this kettle is almost freezing! β
Tan Ze, who was leaning on Brewer's back, smiled: "Because of the cold, we have tried to sleep with you together for the past two days to keep each other warm!" The temperature is decreasing day by day, but they say that we will be able to reach our destination tonight - tomorrow morning at the latest! β
"Oh!" Lynn answered, but this rough information alone was far from enough to determine the precise location of the "Vault". He thought about it for a moment, and suddenly realized that the eccentric guy who liked to sneer, Major Ziggenk, had not been silent since he woke up, so he whispered to Brewer to ask.
Brewer replied: "The major and captain must have gone to the command cabin, and perhaps followed the captain to the deck!" β
Tan Ze on the side continued: "Sir, you must be hungry, we have been properly collecting your rations, huh! β
Feeling that his body had regained his mobility, Lynn raised his left hand and took a few warm potatoes from Tan Ze's hand, and seeing that he was still pulling out of his arms, he hurriedly stopped and said, "Enough, enough, how can I eat so much in one meal!" You're also injured now, so eat more and recover faster! β
Tan Ze said with a smile: "Although the daily supply on the boat is limited, it is still enough to fill the stomach!" It's a shame that you can't save the hot soup, but it's just over an hour before it's time for dinner! β
After chewing slowly, he ate a potato half smaller than an egg, rested for a while, and drank a sip with the help of Brewer, feeling that the strength in his body was steadily recovering, so he was not in a hurry to get up and walk, but chatted with his brothers. From them, Lynn learned some of the things that had happened in the past three days, and although the submarine had no shortage of hardships during the voyage, it had not delayed much on the whole, and it seemed that it had been able to reach its destination on time.
"Today is May 3rd...... Lynn thought about the historical records he knew, at this time the FΓΌhrer had died with his beloved wife, the Goebbels family of eight was martyred, Berlin was in full swing, and DΓΆnitz, who had been appointed as the head of state, had already begun to negotiate surrender with the Allies.
With such doubts, he asked his soldiers, who had heard some news from their comrades during their shifts, except that when they talked about the fall of Berlin and the "death" of the FΓΌhrer, most of them felt that this was a ruse by the Allies to demoralize the German army.
Lynn was not surprised by the soldiers' thoughts, but confirmed some of her speculations with news from the outside world. At dinner, Major Ziggenke and Captain Motchig returned to the aft cabin together, and when they saw that Lynn was awake and able to eat on his own, the Major joked that "the Danes are cats with nine lives", and because of the attitude of his superiors, the captain did not say much, and gave Lynn a cigarette and a piece of chocolate, which were very much needed as a wounded number.
The body had just recovered, and Lynn didn't have the energy to pick out the information from the major's mouth a little bit, thinking that it was inconvenient for Mottchig to reveal it at will, so he tried to get up and walk around after dinner, although there was still a little fluttery and soft feeling, but at least he wouldn't fall out of balance when he walked. After getting used to it a little, Lynn walked along the passage of the boat to the command cabin, the SS soldiers and submariners were still crowded in a narrow and limited space, it seemed that the number of crew members on the submarine had not decreased, and when he arrived at the command cabin, he saw that his naval colleagues and the SS officers and men who were substitutes were still busy in an orderly manner, and his heart was steady and gratified.
Lynn greeted the chief engineer and walked over to the helmsman, "Hey, Lambert!" β
Because the temperature had dropped a lot, the helmsman wore a scarf around his neck and a velvet hat on his head, and when he turned his head, he still had the same expression that he hadn't woken up: "Hey...... Lynn! I heard that you are in a coma due to an infected wound, how is it? β
"It feels so much better!" Lynn replied as she glanced at the dials in front of the helmsman. The submarine is now heading more than 35 degrees east-north, and a depth of less than 5 meters indicates that it is in a floating state.
"Ha, it's okay! Come on? The helmsman immediately stood up, as if there was a fire burning under the position, and he felt tormented by staying for a second longer.
Lynn sat down, the leather-padded chair was naturally much more comfortable than the cold hard floor, although the command cabin was crowded, but the cold wind carried cold water foam through the hatch leading to the control tower cabin, making it completely warm.
"I've forgotten a lot of things when I'm asleep, and you're afraid you'll have to teach me again!"
"Just kidding!" The helmsman slapped Lynn's left hand, "Because of your absence, I've stayed up three nights in a row, and I haven't slept for 10 hours in these three days combined!" β
At this time, Lynn didn't have the helplessness of staying up late to review before the exam, and he smiled happily: "Go ahead!" Go ahead! I'll ask the chief engineer for help if I have any questions! β
The helmsman yawned, took off his big gray scarf and tied it to Lynn, and said, "He's not slept for forty hours in a row!" But...... I may arrive in Hong Kong tonight, and you should come to the cabin and call me when the time comes! Those delicate jobs can't be done by non-professional helmsmen! β
"Okay!" Lynn replied cheerfully, and before the helmsman could turn away, he asked, "Is 'arrival' a technical term?" β
The helmsman still yawned incessantly: "Uh-huh! Whether it's entering the harbor or sailing straight into the submarine cave, we are used to calling it 'arrival'! Good night! β
Seeing that Lynn was in place, the chief engineer walked over and looked at the dial, and then advised: "When we reach the cold sea area, our rudder and propeller may be sluggish, and may even be frozen, once there is an abnormality, be sure to report it to me in time!" β
"Okay! Sir! Lynn replied, then looked at her watch, 7:40. I have the impression that the Arctic Circle enters summer with long days and short nights, but now that it is May, the sea must still be bright. However, since the sinking of the Tirpitz by the British with a giant bomb, the threat of the German Navy to the Allied Arctic route has diminished sharply, and a large number of submarines have been withdrawn to the mainland and the Baltic Sea, and the Allied ships have been able to withdraw from the northern seas to fight in the Pacific. Therefore, it should have been relatively safe for German submarines to sail in the cold and remote areas of the eastern Norwegian Sea at this time, so much so that in the first half of the night Lynn received only three steering instructions, and all of them were small normal turns to adjust their course or avoid the dangerous areas of the many reefs.
After midnight, the air pouring in from outside the hatch was even colder, the toes in the boots began to tingle, and the velvet gloves that exposed the fingers were completely useless. Like the crew around her, Lynn kept rubbing her hands and stomping her feet, but her body still couldn't help but tremble. When it was almost 1 o'clock, the command from the conning tower cabin to prepare to enter the port, and without waiting for Lynn to call, the genuine helmsman Lambert took the initiative to appear, and squeezed Lynn away with sleepy eyes: "Go to sleep, Comrade Lynn!" β
The constant stint did make the recovering body tired, but the thought that the long voyage was about to end with the submarine sailing into the mysterious "shelter", Lynn was both excited and full of curiosity, he wanted to see what this shelter looked like from the outside, but he flatly refused to apply to the chief engineer to leave the cabin, at this time, some of the crew who were originally on the deck were also driven back to the cabin, and only a few people seemed to be left outside, including the captain. Not only that, but the captain also ordered the crew through the microphone: all personnel should keep their posts, not to move around at will, let alone go to the deck and conning tower without permission, no one was allowed to use the periscope, and the navigator immediately destroyed the charts.
With this series of orders, the heavy and solemn atmosphere in the submarine cabin suddenly rose, especially when the navigator put the torn nautical chart into the barrel and lit it, and the special smell of burning paper permeated the air, and people all looked forward to the coming moment with nervousness.
