Chapter 433: Expanding the Army and Expanding the Army
Compared with the cautious treatment of officers, the treatment of ordinary soldiers is much simpler, and if they are willing to surrender and meet the requirements, they will be directly assigned by the Ministry of Education to serve in various units on active duty, and soldiers who are unwilling to surrender or do not meet the conditions will be directly dismissed.
In addition to the several thousand prisoners of the Fourth Division and the Second Mixed Brigade, the main force of the Anhui Army, there were also tens of thousands of ordinary troops of the Liangjiang Provincial Army, nearly 20,000 in Jinling alone, and then almost 20,000 prisoners of the Ninth and Tenth Divisions of Liangjiang in the Zhenjiang area.
A small half of these captured soldiers were directly assigned to the active units fighting in Jiangnan, and some were sent to Henan to supplement the strength gap of the Third Army.
The three divisions under the Third Army have always lacked soldiers and weapons, because the Feng Army had previously focused its main efforts on the various units fighting in Jiangnan, and the new troops and weapons were given priority to replenish in the direction of Jiangnan.
In addition to replenishing troops, there is also a more important matter, that is, to replenish the weapons and ammunition lost in the course of the battle.
There is nothing to say about ammunition, after several months of fighting, almost all the ammunition in the Jiangnan direction has been consumed, and the ammunition retained in the hands of the various units in Jiangnan is no longer enough to launch a large-scale campaign, and it is in urgent need of replenishment from the rear.
In the course of the Jiangnan operation, the Feng army suffered tremendous losses in weapons, with more than 200 light machine guns, nearly 100 heavy machine guns, more than 100 mortars of various calibers, more than 30 75-mm guns, and tens of thousands of ordinary rifles and pistols.
These weapons are expensive things, and if they are only replenished by the Feng army itself, it will be a very expensive thing.
Fortunately, the Feng army also captured a lot of weapons and ammunition in the Jiangnan Campaign, including more than 40 75-mm field guns alone, more than 50 mountain artillery, and dozens of damaged artillery pieces that could be repaired, the total number of which was more than 100, which was far more than the losses of the Feng army itself.
Moreover, the caliber and model of the artillery used by the Feng army and the Anhui army are similar, and they can be used in general, and the ordnance department often classifies the artillery captured at the front line and directly assigns it to the troops on the front line.
A lot of artillery and machine guns were captured, but more rifles/pistols were captured, more than 30,000 rifles were surrendered by prisoners alone, and tens of thousands of rifles were captured on the battlefield, with a total of more than 60,000 rifles, pistols, and cavalry guns.
This figure is also more than the losses of the Feng army itself, and the rifles used by the Anhui army are mainly 88 type, as well as the 30-year and 38-year models made in Japan. And the Feng army itself is mainly using Type 88 rifles and Japanese-made rifles on a large scale.
The 88-type rifle gun is the standard rifle gun commonly used in China at present, and the rifle gun made by the Japanese army was purchased and used on a large scale by the direct army and the Anhui army in the past.
However, the number of seizures is too large, and with the current batch of captured, there are more than 50,000 rifles preserved and used in the Feng army, which is enough to equip five Japanese armourers.
The Feng army was equipped with a large number of Japanese-made rifles, which also forced several Soviet arsenals to increase the production of Japanese-style 65 bullets, and the Fuyuan Machinery Factory originally had only one production line of 65 bullets with a daily output of no more than 10,000 rounds, but now it has expanded its production to 40,000 rounds per day.
At the same time, the Jiangnan Manufacturing Bureau and the Jinling Manufacturing Bureau recently controlled by the Soviet Department are all production lines with Japanese-style bullets, and the interesting thing is that these production lines were built with the help of the Japanese themselves, and the original intention was to support Duan Qirui, but I didn't expect that like a large number of Japanese weapons sold to Duan Qirui, they all fell into the hands of Fengjun and cheapened Zhao Dongyun.
The large amount of ordnance and ammunition seized can be said to have greatly relieved the pressure on the current military spending of the Feng army, and although the Soviet finance department said that there is no need to worry about financial pressure in a short period of time to obtain loans for the aftermath, this money is also limited, and it is very necessary to save as much as it can save.
For the Feng army during the war, the cost of ordnance and ammunition is a very large amount, and the main cost of raising the army in peacetime is the salary of personnel, but the more expenditure in wartime is the cost of ordnance and ammunition.
At the same time, the replenishment of ordnance and ammunition is also limited by the output of domestic arsenals, otherwise it will not be replenished if you have money.
The captured batch of weapons and ammunition is enough to speed up the rest and replenishment of the Feng army, and even the expansion of the army.
Due to the large number of captured weapons, especially artillery, in addition to supplementing several units of the Jiangnan operation, the Feng army also used these captured artillery to form the first independent field artillery regiment.
In the past, the independent artillery unit of the Feng army had only two heavy artillery battalions, but now more artillery pieces have been captured, and at the same time, the Feng army does not have the idea of setting up many troops on the spot in the Jiangnan area for the time being, and it is not convenient to move these artillery units to the Henan Third Army, so it is simply set up an independent artillery regiment on the spot to further strengthen the artillery force in the Jiangnan area.
In this feast of dividing up many captured weapons and ammunition, even the 16th Division, which was in the third line within the Feng army, was supplemented by a large number of soldiers and weapons.
Since the 16th Division surrendered to the Soviet Union last year, it has actually been neglected, and its personnel have not been replenished much, but it has successively replenished middle and lower-level officers, and the purpose of supplementing these officers is not to improve the combat effectiveness of the unit, but to control this unit.
However, now the Feng army has captured more weapons, and there are more soldiers to supplement the rear, plus after the Feng army took Jiangnan, a large number of generals in the military have once again come up with the idea of expanding the army, Meng Enyuan and others said that now the Soviet Union has taken Jiangnan, and the follow-up will continue to go south, and more troops will be needed to unify China.
When there was no plan to form a new army for the time being, the generals of the military were thinking about expanding the existing troops to the ideal establishment in 1908, and at the same time, they were also thinking about upgrading other units in the Feng army to the main force, so that the purpose of expanding the army was simply achieved.
Based on this plan, the 16th Division was also supplemented, and the 16th Division, which originally had only about 10,000 people, was supported by 6,000 recruits at one time, in addition to an artillery battalion.
Of course, there is still a gap between the actual combat effectiveness and the likes of the First Division.
In addition to the 16th Division, the military also had a plan, that is, to expand the 1st Mixed Brigade into a division.
For this plan, Meng Enyuan is strong support, and although Bao Guiqing is also from a direct line, he led the First Mixed Brigade in a series of operations, especially in the Battle of Jinling, and it stands to reason that it is time to be promoted, but there is no vacant division commander position in the Feng Army for the time being, so the best way is to directly expand the First Mixed Brigade into a division, and Bao Guiqing will be able to be promoted to division commander by taking advantage of the situation.
The first mixed brigade is not bad, and it has won the opportunity to expand into a division for himself.
On May 3, Zhao Dongyun officially ordered the formation of the 19th Division on the basis of the 1st Mixed Brigade, and Bao Guiqing naturally served as the commander of the newly established 19th Division.
The newly established 19th Division was different from the 17th and 18th Divisions that had been established before, and the 18th and 17th Divisions were established solely to increase the garrison strength in Mukden and Zhili, and the combat effectiveness of these two units was also limited.
However, the 19th Division is based on the 1st Mixed Brigade, and even if it has just been established, its combat effectiveness is already enough to rank among the front-line troops of the Feng Army.
With the expansion of the 1st Mixed Brigade into a division, it also reflects the thinking of the Feng Army in the past year, that is, to stop the establishment of mixed brigades, and even to withdraw and expand the mixed brigades into regular infantry divisions.
After the 1st Mixed Brigade was expanded into a division, there are not many mixed brigades retained in the Feng Army, and there are only four mixed brigades: the 4th Mixed Brigade, the 5th Mixed Brigade, the 9th Mixed Brigade, and the 11th Mixed Brigade.
The other three mixed brigades, the 1st Mixed Brigade, the 7th Mixed Brigade, and the 10th Mixed Brigade, have been successively expanded into divisions.
In addition, since the Fourth Mixed Brigade was disabled in the Battle of Dangtu, there have been calls for the number of this mixed brigade to be directly revoked, and the remnants to be supplemented with other Fengjun troops.
However, this move was blocked by Zhao Dongyun, although Zhao Dongyun was very dissatisfied with the defeat of the Fourth Mixed Brigade, and also dissatisfied with Lin Pingxiong, the commander of the Fourth Mixed Brigade, but the feeling in his heart could not replace his reason.
Let's talk about Lin Pingxiong first, he is one of the first few generals to follow Zhao Dongyun, although he made a mistake, but he can't erase his past credits, and he still has the ability, and the previous battles are also good, when the Tu battle of the second mixed brigade of the onslaught, the defeat of the troops is also understandable, after all, in the first battle of Tu, although the fourth mixed brigade was defeated, but also successfully left thousands of corpses of the second mixed brigade Anhui army, the second mixed brigade was also half disabled.
After the 2nd Mixed Brigade arrived in Jinling, it lacked enough troops to launch a large-scale attack on the 14th and 3rd Divisions.
At the same time, Meng Enyuan, Lin Yongquan and several others also called to intercede for Lin Pingxiong, so Zhao Dongyun did not want to remove Lin Pingxiong according to his feelings.
Lin Pingxiong will not be dismissed, but it is impossible to transfer to other units, after all, his military rank is major 'general plus lieutenant' general, and the rank is there, even if he is transferred to the post level, he must be the commander of the mixed brigade or the commander of the division, so Zhao Dongyun simply continued to retain the fourth mixed brigade.
This can be regarded as a kind of cold treatment for Zhao Dongyun himself, giving Lin Pingxiong a chance to make meritorious contributions, if Lin Pingxiong has another fiasco in the follow-up combat effectiveness, then even if he is an early general in the army, Zhao Dongyun will completely suppress him and not give him a chance to turn over.
Based on this idea, the Fourth Mixed Brigade has also been rebuilt, and the Fourth Mixed Brigade has suffered too heavy losses in the First Battle of Dangtu, and the veterans and officers with rich combat experience have almost been killed and wounded, so in order to avoid the rebuilt Fourth Mixed Brigade from becoming a third-rate unit, the military has also transferred some backbone veterans and officers from other units to supplement the unit, so as to restore the combat effectiveness of the Fourth Mixed Brigade.
The civilian system rectified the administrative affairs of the Jiangnan region, and the military was expanded and reorganized.
