Section 222 Maritime Trade Routes
The harbor of Mecklenburg welcomed a long-awaited fleet, but it would be an exaggeration to say that there was only one ship back, and the sails of this ship were tattered, the side of the ship was clearly struck, and there were half as few sailors as oars on board.
"Where's my fleet?" Arold had now reverted to his duke's costume, and he led his courtiers to the harbor, where he saw the mighty fleet of ships that had left only a broken ship floating back.
"We shouldn't trust that Jew." Brother Elvet said to Arold.
"Any adventure at sea is respectable, and they must have encountered some kind of disaster." Harvey said disapprovingly.
"Is Soros still alive?" When the ship approached the dock, the sailors lowered the gangplank, and they carried their wounded and sick companions down one by one, and Arold walked over and said to one of the sailors.
The sailor didn't speak, just pointed behind him, and the eyes of Arold and the others followed his fingers to the armed merchant ship, only to see the Jew Thoros walking onto the gangplank with the help of a sailor, he looked like a thin skeleton, his skin was blown purple by the sea breeze, and he looked like he had suffered a lot.
"Lord Duke." Soros came to Arrode, who looked weak, filthy and full of lice.
"Soros, welcome back, take him to the castle." Arold looked at Soros's appearance, what else could he say, stepped forward and grabbed his shoulder and shook it gently.
Arold held a small banquet in Mecklenburg, where Soros was dressed up by the servants, washed three buckets of hot water, his hair was smeared with olive oil, and he was dressed like a Germanic nobleman, and Arold treated Soros like a returning hero.
"Let's welcome Soros." When Soros walked into the hall of the lords through the side door. Arold immediately rose from his seat, raised his glass and spoke out to the Mecklenburg nobles in the hall.
"Thank you, thank you." Soros walked among the nobles, and the hall burst into applause, and even the unimpressed Elvet friars had to applaud.
"In recognition of Soros's bravery, fearlessness, and adventurous and obedient spirit. I decided to give him a manor and two villages of land, and to give him the title of knight. Soros my friend, come and take a step forward. Arold waved at Soros, who couldn't believe his ears, and the surrounding Mecklenburg nobles looked envious, and of course, there were also jealous eyes.
"Oh, it's the Duke." Soros felt like he was stepping on cotton, and he walked up to Arrod, not knowing what to do. After all, it is extremely unusual for a Jew to be able to obtain a title.
"Get on your knees." Arold said to Soros, and one of his attendants stepped forward and handed Arold the sword.
"Yes." Soros's nervous palms were sweating, and he knelt down in front of Arold with a thud.
"I, Duke Arrod of Mecklenburg, bestow upon you the title of knight." Arold picked up his sword and slapped Soros the back to make him remember his oath.
"It's just madness to get a title for a Jew. The Holy See will not agree. Some of the Mecklenburg nobles whispered discontentedly that the Jews were stubbornly following their religion. This is itself a heresy in the Christian society of Europa, an ostracized group.
"Please wait a minute, Lord Duke." Brother Elvet objected.
"What are the reasons for your objection?" Arold slung his sword over his shoulder, looked at Brother Elvet and asked.
"As devout Christians, and as aristocrats who uphold canon law, titles may be conferred only on Christians, not pagans. You may have forgotten this, my Lord Duke. Brother Elvet said to Arrod.
"Oh, there's such a thing, well, Soros, you convert immediately." Arrode's brow furrowed. Sometimes his **** people's thinking of using doctrine will still pop up, and religion is not a problem for him at all.
"Of course you can." Although disgusted with Jewish ancestry, since Arold had made his decision, Brother Elvet could not refute it too much.
"Then let's continue, Soros remembers to go to the church tomorrow for the baptism ceremony, and now the banquet continues." Arold said to Soros and asked him to sit beside him.
"It's the Duke." Soros's face flushed a little, he couldn't believe it, wearing the clothes of a Germanic nobleman and holding the title of an East Francian nobleman, it was almost like a dream.
During the banquet, Arold talked with Soros non-stop throughout the whole process, and got from Soros's mouth about the experience of this voyage.
"We had a good start, and as you described, we came across a succession of Low Territories, and they were very interested in our cargo, and I made contact with their lords or governors." Soros whispered to Arold, who listened attentively.
"According to you, you should have made a lot of money and returned victorious, but how did you lose so many ships, did you encounter bad weather?" Arold raised his own questions in the gap between Soros' stops for a drink.
"Lord Duke, you're half right, on the way back, loaded with cargo and money, we did encounter a rare storm at sea, and lost several merchant ships." Soros said.
"What, what's going on?" Arold then asked.
"It's a pirate, a damn pirate." Soros squeezed words out between his teeth, and he picked up his glass and drank it dry, the red wine reminding him of that nightmare.
"Pirates?" Arrod straightened up in surprise.
"Yes, a group of Vikings attacked us in ships, like a pack of hungry wolves, who had been waiting for us, and after we were hit by a storm, they ransacked us and slaughtered many of our sailors."
"Vikings?" Arjod was somewhat surprised, he had made an agreement with the Danes, and it was impossible for Banuk, who had converted to Catholicism, to loot his caravan, at least for now.
"Yes, but they're not Danes, they're Norwegian Vikings. If it weren't for the experienced captain of the merchant ship I was flying in and threw the cargo away in advance, we wouldn't have been able to get out of the house. Soros said to Arold with trepidation.
"It's true that this thing needs to be verified." Arold said to Soros.
"Lord Duke, I'm very sorry that I didn't bring back the goods and money for you." Soros said to Arold with some remorse.
"No, it is the greatest treasure for you to be able to come back, and I will organize the second seafaring trade as soon as possible. This time, it's up to you to lead. "Arold has a large amount of money from the Duke of Burgundy in his hand, enough to start the second seafaring trade, but before he can clear the pirates.
"Thank you for your trust." Tears welled up in Soros's excited eyes, he didn't expect Arold to hold himself in such high esteem and be willing to trust him after a defeat.
"Harvey, send a message to the King of Denmark at once to inquire about the Norwegians attacking my caravan?" Arold turned to Harvey and said.
"Yes." Harvey immediately agreed, and she strode out of the hall of the lords.
The reception banquet in the castle was a success, when Soros woke up from the mess of the lord's hall the next day. The drunken nobles who had not yet woken up slept in the hall, and Soros remembered that he had not yet returned home to see, and he did not know how worried his family would be, so he staggered out of the hall, and the servants he met along the way bowed to him.
When Soros appeared at his doorstep, his wife and sons couldn't believe their eyes, this man in aristocratic clothes turned out to be their relatives, and Soros's wife stepped forward to hug him. The sons tugged at his clothes curiously.
Soros sat in his humble hut while his wife brought simple food. The family sat around a wooden table, while the young sons waited for their father's story with their chin held on their chins.
"The sea is like a moody child, one moment it was calm and the sea was blue, but the next moment it was like an angry warrior, setting off a huge wave several feet high, throwing our ship high ~~." Soros certainly enjoys spending time with his family. He paints a picture of a sea voyage in vivid language.
"Wow." The children exclaimed, they could not imagine the endless sea and the huge waves.
"You lost so many goods and merchant ships on this trip, and the Duke didn't blame you, it's simply God's protection." Soros's wife asked with some concern.
"And that's not all. The trip was physically and mentally exhausting, but the gains were enormous, and the Duke had granted me a manor. Soros also couldn't figure out what Arrod did, if it was an ordinary nobleman, if the Jews lost his goods, at least they would be thrown into the castle dungeon to fend for themselves.
"Is Soros there?" At this moment, the voices of several men came from outside the door of Soros's house, and Soros and his wife walked out curiously and saw the elders of the Jewish quarter standing outside the door wearing Hebrew turbans.
"Oh, Elder!" Soros hurriedly stepped forward to salute them, and at his door were the parish elders, Soros's wife tried to invite the elders in, but was refused, and everyone's faces were very serious.
"We're not going in, but there's something we need to ask." The leader of the elders held the sides of the Hebrew turban, and he looked at Soros with a proud expression, as if he was looking at a criminal, which made Soros's wife very puzzled.
"Distinguished Elders, what the hell is going on?" Soros's wife asked nervously.
"You should ask your husband how he apostatized." The leader of the elder said with a shaky beard.
"Apostasy? It can't be, my husband is the most devout of the congregants. Soros's wife looked at the majestic elders with wide eyes.
"He betrayed the Divine Doctrine for the sake of profit, and completely surrendered to the Duke of Mecklenburg, and he was about to become a Catholic." Another elder blew his beard and glared.
"What? Soros: This can't be. Soros's wife looked at her husband, and Soros pursed his lips in silence.
"Look, he's running out of things to say, traitor."
"The Holy Avenger will find you." The leader of the elder stared at Soros and said softly, although the voice was small, but it shocked Soros and his wife.
"No, this must be a misunderstanding, Elder." Soros's wife was almost on her knees before the elders, and she knew very well that the elders' threats were not groundless.
"Enough, don't beg them. I have done enough for this community, but they are short-sighted and stubbornly closed-minded, and if the Avengers were to come, my family would have adhered to Jewish traditions, despite the fact that they had come to me. "Soros is already desperate for the elders, he feels that he is working very hard to save the tribe, but they are not willing to listen to even one of his own explanations.
"But, but." Soros's wife hugged her husband in horror, she was afraid of losing her husband.
"I thought it would take at least a while for them to find out, but I didn't expect the news to reach the ears of the elders so quickly, and it must have been done by someone in the Duke's court who was dissatisfied with me." Soros is also holding his wife, he has despaired of the race, and now he can only let his family be stable and happy.
"Do you really want to be a Catholic?" Soros's wife raised her head and asked her husband.
"Yes, only by becoming a Catholic will I be able to obtain the title and you will be safe." Soros knew that the Jews were like pigs in the pen of the aristocracy, and whenever the pigs were fattened, the nobles would find an excuse to slaughter them and then confiscate their property, which was not uncommon.
In the end, Soros came to a conclusion that only by having a voice in politics can he protect himself.
"Then I will go and be baptized with the children and become a Catholic with you."
"I~~." Soros looked at his wife, couldn't help but tighten her upstairs, and couldn't help but kiss her lips with emotion.
While Soros was making out with his wife, Harvey walked into the Mecklenburg Chamber, where Arold was already sitting and began to process official documents, and during the period of his trip to Burgundy, although the bureaucratic system of the Duchy of Mecklenburg was working well, there were some important matters that Arold still needed to sign.
"It's done." Harvey walked over to Arrod and sat down on the opposite side, and she said to Arold.
"Is that the thing?" Arrod looked up from the mountain of papers and asked Harvey.
"That thing about Soros." Harvey replied.
"Oh." Arold nodded, and lowered his head again to review the file.
"I don't understand, why are you telling their elders about Soros's conversion?" Harvey couldn't help but ask curiously.
"Because Soros is important to me, I can't tolerate his loyalty being double-minded." Arold smiled and said to Harvey.
