Chapter 616: Upheaval in Russia
White clouds are surging, and the blue sky is clear. A majestic and magnificent building rises from the ground, undulating and reflecting a dazzling luster in the sunlight. Towers are tall, churches are towering, and the 14-metre-high crimson palace walls enclose the entire complex. Compared to the ordinary Eastern European city dwellings outside the walls, the buildings inside the walls are ornate attics standing in front of the straw huts.
This is the heart of Russia, Moscow, where the Kremlin, known as the "eighth wonder of the world", is located. After more than 800 years of expansion and development, the Kremlin has long become the most magnificent architectural complex in Russia; Even the most gorgeous ones such as the Hermitage and the Royal Village are still inferior in terms of overall scale. Since the Russians, who had studied the West in all their respects, moved their capital to St. Petersburg, Moscow's political centrality was marginalized for nearly 200 years. It wasn't until the summer of 1914 that it became the central hub of the ancient Siberian landscape.
However, as the master, it is no longer the Romanov Empire with the double-headed eagle as its totem.
The floors are dark and the cabinets are crimson. The large baroque floor-to-ceiling windows are covered with crimson curtains, and against the light green walls, the style is completely different from any previous faction, but it seems concise and solemn. The main lamp with a huge sickle and hammer and a five-pointed red star was embedded in the ceiling, illuminating the whole room; Behind the ochre-red leather pedestal, oil portraits of two German bearded men hang prominently in the middle of the wall, as if the owners of this place can swell up with infinite fighting spirit and strength just by seeing them.
"News just came from Washington. The imperialist powers, such as Germany and the United States, have reached a negotiated consensus on limiting naval armaments. And what makes people feel righteous indignation. Those large warships that the Germans took from us. None of them were returned to us, but all of them were sent to the shipyard for dismantling and refurnace; That's a 120,000-ton capital ship, and it cost us at least hundreds of millions to build them! ”
The slender Kamenev spoke angrily, his words full of hatred that could not be concealed. Prior to this, he had illusions about Germany's ransacking of the Russian Baltic Fleet, which he considered inevitable against the British Navy; Once they had achieved their goal, it was not impossible that these ships, which were not excellent in the German Navy, but were absolutely a treasure bump in the Russian Navy, would be returned to them. Today, however, he found out. The Germans have done such a thing of crossing the river and tearing down the bridge: now the Russian Navy has emptied even the last fig leaf, and even the fleets of Sweden and Finland can ride on their faces!
"Comrade Kamenev, do you still have such an unrealistic idea of developing the navy? It is precisely because of the bloody Nikolai's exhaustive pursuit of these luxury toys that the Russian people are oppressed, live in misery, and wander and struggle on the death line every day. Ulyanov, who was sitting at the top, snorted lightly and said with some dissatisfaction, "What's more, we don't have the ability and need to maintain these big guys at all, and the greatest use of those Kronstadt sailors is to pick up a rifle." Then go to land and defend the nascent Soviet power! Instead of thinking about this, it is better to think carefully about how to deal with the counter-revolutionary forces in the country; Now they're tearing themselves apart. These are the great enemies of my Bolsheviks at the moment! ”
Kamenev fell silent. For a moment, the room was silent, except for the slight whispering of the table clock by the wall.
Since the signing of the Treaty of Brest, the turmoil in Russia, far from ceases with the cessation of the actions of the Allied troops, has become more and more intense: the vast majority of Russians feel that the treaty, signed by the Bolsheviks, is too harsh, and this undoubtedly adds to their dissatisfaction with the present government to a great extent. The Socialist-Revolutionaries, who had previously played an important role in the short-lived Provisional Government, took advantage of this opportunity to resurrect themselves and attack the incompetence and cowardice of the Bolshevik government: such a humiliating treaty brought great suffering to Russian society even more than the continuation of the fight!
Under the heavy bombardment of the Socialist-Revolutionaries, a large number of Russians turned to their side: after all, the armistice agreed by the Bolsheviks was too unacceptable, and the scarred masses gradually forgot the pain they had suffered in the war. At the same time, calls for immediate constitutionalism by the Bolsheviks were growing: now that the Tsar was gone, it was natural to follow the example of France and the United States in achieving a republic.
In the face of strong pressure from all walks of life in Russia, the Bolsheviks had to issue a proclamation for constitutional elections: the statement said that if the Bolsheviks lost the election, they would also respect the decision of the Russian people and be willing to become a member of the opposition party. They still have a lot of confidence in their hearts about the upcoming elections, after all, they have developed in the army and the workers' camp for so many years, and they have responded to every call in the major cities, and it is a sure thing that they will get the position of the ruling party.
However, the final election results left all the Bolsheviks since Ulyanov dumbfounded. On May 17, 1914, the results of the Bolshevik-dominated constitutional elections were announced: they received only 26.4% of the vote, while the Social Revolutionaries received 41.2%! It turned out that the Bolshevik Party, though more entrenched in the army and in the workers' camp than any other party, had a rather weak penetration among the peasantry, while the Socialist-Revolutionary Party had the opposite effect. Under their propaganda, a large number of peasants voted for them; And the current Russia is still essentially an agrarian country, and its peasants make up the vast majority of the country's population, so this tragic situation arises!
Seeing that the power that was about to be lost in this way, Ulyanov, who had already known about this before, resolutely gave the order to flip the table. Martial law was declared throughout St. Petersburg, troops loyal to the Bolsheviks were transferred into the city, and the Constituent Chamber, Tavlida Palace, was besieged. Ulyanov declared: "One right to the Constituent Assembly" was the slogan of the counter-revolution, and "any attempt to restrain the power of the Soviets is a counter-revolutionary conspiracy". The Constituent Assembly was then forcibly dissolved with the intervention of the armed forces. In order to legitimize his barbaric seizure of power, Ulyanov then wrote an article entitled "On the Constituent Assembly", in which he bluntly stated that "the Soviets are a higher form of democracy than the Constituent Assembly" and that "the deputies elected by the Constituent Assembly do not really represent the will of the people."
Only a few days later, the Bolsheviks held a second congress of soviets without outside recognition: at the meeting they themselves approved a decree on the transfer of state power into their own hands and the transfer of local power to the Soviet deputies of local workers and soldiers. This immediately aroused strong indignation among the forces of all sides. Pro-Constitution crowds poured into the streets to demand that the Bolsheviks immediately reopen the Constituent Assembly: however, the troops loyal to the Bolsheviks were already in the streets, and the soldiers first fired into the air and then directly into the crowd. After a volley, the streets of St. Petersburg were filled with blood: screaming crowds rushed for flight, and the number of people killed by the stampede far exceeded the number of shots!
The effects of this upheaval are far-reaching. As early as 1903, the predecessor of the Bolshevik Party, the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, explicitly included the convening of a Constituent Assembly in its constitution: "The establishment of the people's dictatorship, that is, the entire supreme power of the state in the hands of the Constituent Assembly." After the overthrow of the Provisional Government, the Bolsheviks officially defined themselves as a "Provisional Government of Workers and Peasants" who would administer state power until the Constituent Assembly. However, at present, they have completely torn off the hypocritical skin on their faces, revealing their rogue nature at the expense of all means to gain power. The possibility of a peaceful change of power in Russia was completely wiped out by the abolition of the constitution by force of the Bolsheviks. As a result, the attitude of the various forces has changed radically: since the election is not democratic, then why is the Tsar's legacy yours?
Within two months, there was a storm on the Russian land: the Siberian region, which was controlled by the Cossacks and other minorities, liberals or right-wing forces, took the lead in raising the anti-flag, declaring that the Bolsheviks were perverse Russian traitorous regimes, and calling on the people of all Russia to unite to completely eliminate them. In less than half a month, the North Caucasus also proclaimed the establishment of the Don republic; Former Russian Army Lieutenant General Denikin, with his outstanding popularity, has raised a strong armed force in the country. The Kazakhs also took the opportunity to declare independence and form the Autonomous Republic of Arash, which suddenly reduced Russia's territory by more than 2.7 million square kilometers. Although all parties are still relatively calm for now, anyone with a discerning eye can tell that this is just the silence before the storm!
"The only option left for us now is to defeat by force these forces that do not recognize the leadership of the Soviets, and to cleanly and thoroughly eliminate a single counter-revolutionary element hostile to the Soviets." Trotsky, who had not spoken beside him, pushed the glasses on the bridge of his nose, and his words were also a little fierce, "We will be greeted next by an all-out war, the intensity and duration of which will not be weaker than the previous war!" To do this, we need to rebuild an army, an army that obeys only the orders of the Bolshevik Party. (To be continued......)
