Chapter 13 Altitude Training
My construction was quickly recognized by Commander Zhang, after all, there is such a thing as fighting...... As long as anyone who has experienced it knows, if you really want to fight a good battle, you have to train for a period of time on terrain and hydrology similar to the battlefield, which is what we often call adaptive training, otherwise there will inevitably be many unexpected problems.
In addition, the temperature and terrain on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are very different from those in the plains, so if you don't practice on the plateau for a period of time, it is basically a fantasy to let the soldiers have an excellent performance on the battlefield.
I later learned that this was the right idea, and that there was more to it than just the temperature and the terrain.
After a few days of preparation, we set off.
In fact, many people in the army think that it takes a few days to prepare too cautiously, just like Zhao Jingping said to me: "Battalion commander, what else can we prepare for as soldiers?" Bring a gun and ammunition, and put on a marching quilt on your back, and you're good to go, right? ”
That's what I thought at the time, after all, the unit I have in my hands is a synthetic battalion, a battle-hardened unit, and we are also equipped with what can now be said to be the most advanced Black Hawk helicopter in the country...... This guy is traveling at a speed of 354 kilometers per hour, and the straight-line distance from Beijing to Lhasa is only more than 2,500 kilometers, so it will only take eight hours to arrive.
Of course, since we were flying in a helicopter, the fuel limit made the maximum range only a little more than 1,000 kilometers, which required us to refuel twice along the way and take a small break, so the actual time required was definitely more than eight hours.
But it's much better than the time it took us to get from Vietnam to Beijing by train for about a month, even if it was 24 hours a day. That's not a problem for us in the Synthesis Camp.
However, Commander Zhang believes that this training is different from the past. First, we need time to become more familiar with the new equipment "Black Hawk" helicopter. Second, we went to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau this time. This is a region unlike any of our previous battlefields.
Therefore, Commander Zhang still asked us to spend three days to prepare, and Commander Zhang used this time to contact us with the transit battle and the receiving troops at the destination.
On the third day, 24 Black Hawk helicopters flew in the direction of Tibet with more than 300 men.
The composition of the more than 300 men was as follows: 142 men from the entire secret service company, 50 soldiers from the sniper company of a reinforced platoon, plus battalion headquarters, guards, communicators, and mechanics, a total of 315 people.
The Black Hawk helicopter carries 11 people in normal cases and 20 people in special cases. So now the average helicopter carrying thirteen people in the cabin does not seem cramped, and it feels much more spacious than ten people crammed into a straight five.
This is also a manifestation of the Yankee's technological advancement, and the "Black Hawk" is equipped with two engines...... Fitted with two engines in case one crashes immediately after one is broken, the Black Hawk is designed to operate normally for half an hour even if all the oil leaks.
Coupled with a lot of armor protection, there is even a way to be 300 kg lighter than the straight five, and the internal space is even larger. Therefore, compared with the Yankees in this era, the gap between our army's science and technology is not one or two points.
At first, it went very smoothly, and the Black Hawk flew steadily and quickly in the air, which made the pilots and even the soldiers on board very addicted...... This is actually understandable, the maximum speed of our straight five is 210 kilometers per hour. And the Black Hawk is 354 kilometers per hour, which is a bit like a classic car driving suddenly into a sports car.
This was followed by two refueling transitions and a two-hour intermission...... In fact, it doesn't matter whether our infantry wants to rest or not. It's that the pilot is afraid that he can't hold up for a long time, and he has to carry out some necessary maintenance of the helicopter halfway, anyway, we are not in such a hurry to reach the destination, and it is always right to be careful.
Later, I realized that we were far from being careful enough, mainly because none of us had ever been to the plateau, so we thought about it too simply.
As the helicopter approached its destination and climbed all the way up, it was obvious that the speed had slowed down.
At first, we thought it was because the helicopter was climbing, but then we found that even the level flight speed had slowed down.
"It's because the air is thin at high places!" Zheng Liangqiang explained: "Helicopters rely on the rotors to exhaust air to generate power, so the higher you go, the thinner the air, the lower the work efficiency. ”
"So what is the efficiency of the helicopter on the Tibetan Plateau?" I asked.
"We've tested that." Zheng Liangqiang replied: "If we go straight five, we can't fly to the height of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau at all, the Black Eagle can, but if it reaches the altitude of 4,000 to 5,000 meters, under normal circumstances, the power will be reduced by 30 percent, the load capacity will be reduced by 25 percent, the speed will be reduced by half, and the fuel consumption will be increased by almost one-third." ”
I couldn't help but be a little stunned when I heard this, which means that the speed and range of the Black Eagle on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are actually similar to those of the Zhiwu, but it still has some advantages in terms of load capacity.
However, this does not seem to be a big problem, after all, it is completely enough for us to reach a speed of more than 100 kilometers per hour, after all, the Indian army is not a technologically advanced country, and our delivery at this speed can fully meet the needs of fast fighting and quick withdrawal.
On the other hand, on the same Tibetan Plateau, we are slow to the enemy, and such a balance can almost not have much impact on the battle.
"The temperature will drop soon!" Zheng Liangqiang reminded us.
Sure enough, as the helicopter climbed higher intermittently, the temperature continued to drop.
I remember that I learned this knowledge in junior high school physics, and the average temperature drop by 6 degrees Celsius every 1,000 meters of rise, so the temperature on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is generally more than 20 degrees lower than that in the plains.
I didn't take that to heart though, because we had been fighting in the cold when we were in Afghanistan, so I'm sure the company will adapt quickly.
But this is not the case......
Two hours later, we finally arrived at the designated location, a place known as Training Base No. 5.
The reason why the training is being carried out at this base is that it is still some distance from the Sino-Indian border...... This is, of course, so as not to expose our "secret equipment" to the Indians prematurely.
"Hello, comrade!" When our helicopters landed in the open space of the base one after another according to the instructions of the base personnel, a group of PLA soldiers wearing cotton jackets and carrying rifles soon greeted us.
"It's a comrade from the synthetic battalion!" The first cadre with a dark face and a mustache warmly shook the hands of the soldiers and said, "Your battalion commander is ......."
"I am!" I walked up to the top of the snowflake cat that was carried up by the propeller.
"I'm Yang Xuefeng, the commander of the synthetic battalion!" I introduced myself.
"I'm Li Haoqiang, a staff officer of the 319th Division!" Bazihu warmly shook my hand, and at the same time looked at the 81 bars on our backs and the more than 20 helicopters around us with envy, and sighed: "Welcome, comrade, it's finally time for you!" (Note: false number)
I quite understand why Staff Officer Li has such a look and such a thing, you must know that at this time, transportation on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau was very difficult, and there were many places where there were not even roads and manpower was needed. This makes their equipment relatively backward, which can be seen from the fact that they are still carrying 56 and a half, and even 56 rushes are very few.
It is said that the reason why the 56 Punch is rarely equipped is that it is too wasteful of bullets, and a pull of the trigger is a magazine, which is not something that the troops here can afford.
As for us, everyone has 81 bars on their backs...... This is determined by the ammunition, to this Qinghai-Tibet plateau, our supply must rely on friendly forces, and friendly forces only have 81 bars of universal ammunition, which determines that we cannot carry AK74.
Add to that a sniper rifle they've only heard of in legends and a helicopter they've never seen before, and we're instantly high-end.
In fact, I believe that the reason why the equipment of the troops here is so poor is partly because of the inconvenience of supply, and partly because the transportation can almost be said to be isolated from the core area, so it is difficult for the reform of our army's large forces in the past few years to affect this extremely harsh border area.
"Sit, sit down!" Staff Officer Li welcomed me into his office, and after the orderly poured me a cup of hot tea, he pointed to the map and said: "The overall situation is like this, the border area has always been calm, but since our army launched a self-defense counterattack against Vietnam, the Indian side has also begun to move. The year before and last year, they openly sent small troops to establish a stronghold across the line of our actual control, and the pattern of their activities was to enter in the summer and withdraw in the winter, which was determined by the difficulty of replenishment in the winter. But this year...... Since the Mi-26 helicopters, they have not been withdrawn until now. ”
"Hmm!" I nodded as I sipped my tea.
Obviously, the Mi-26 can provide them with sufficient supplies, even in winter, so the Indian army intends to stay there for a long time to create a definite fact.
In other words, they want to continue to encroach on our territory, and move forward step by step like slicing sausages.
Moreover, I have reason to believe that the Soviet Union is behind this, otherwise India would not have been so coincidental in equipping itself with the decisive Mi-26 at this critical moment...... Such advanced heavy transport helicopters were not equipped even by the USSR itself. (To be continued......)
