226 Focus - Luhansk (Part I)
Rokossovsky glanced out the window, where snowflakes were slowly falling from the sky, and he sighed into the glass and muttered, "It's snowing again......"
The last time it snowed so hard, he was still fighting the Germans on the front line in Ukraine. And now, he is standing in the reception room of the Kremlin, and I have to say that the changes in the past few months have made him feel a little foggy, always feeling so unreal.
"Konstantin. Comrade Konstantinovich, Comrade Frunze please come in. β
As the receptionist gently called his name, Rokossovsky came to his senses and gave the receptionist a smile: "Thank you!" β
Rokossovsky slowly walked through the corridor and walked into Frunze's office. Hello, Comrade Vasilyevich! β
Frunze raised his head and saw that it was Rokossovsky, he immediately laughed and pointed to the sofa in front of his desk, "Konstantin, you do it first, I still have a little work to solve first!" β
Rokossovsky sat down and surveyed the office of the Tsar's high-ranking officials and nobles, observing Frunze's expression. There's not much to say about the office, it can only be described in two words β luxury. Rokossovsky, on the other hand, did not like this luxurious style, whether as a commoner or a soldier, it was shameful to be extravagant.
So his eyes only turned to the extravagant ornaments, and he turned all his attention to Frunze. Men who indulge in their work are undoubtedly fascinating, even if Rokossovsky is not a GAY. He also felt that Frunze at this time had a different kind of charm.
These charms completely belie the extravagant dΓ©cor of the office. Bring this rotten office to life!
Rokossovsky was looking at God. Frunze, however, had already finished the official business at hand and said with a smile: "Comrade Konstantin, what are you looking at?" β
Rokossovsky was a little embarrassed and said, "Your office is really unique......"
Frunze shook his head and sighed, "To be honest, I don't like this style at all, and if I could, I would like to throw out all these carpets, tapestries, oil paintings, etc." And these damn hardwood furniture, it's awkward to use! β
As he spoke, Frunze spread his hands and complained: "But the party committee told me that every grass and tree in the Kremlin is a cultural relic, and it cannot be destroyed, and it must be protected...... Damn, sometimes, I wish I could have changed my office! β
Rokossovsky smiled, he understood Frunze's complaints very well. A real revolutionary, a real military man. None of this stuff will be of interest. Only those who are fake revolutionaries, then those who live in a mask of hypocrisy, will indulge in this kind of pleasure.
Undoubtedly, Frunze was not a hypocritical man, and his sincere style made Rokossovsky feel comfortable, and to be honest, he preferred to deal with a soldier like Frunze than with the party committee and the Soviet bunch of guys who only talk nonsense.
"Konstantin, are you really leaving?" Frunze asked regretfully.
Rokossovsky nodded solemnly and replied: "Yes, Comrade Andrei asked me to rush to Petrograd at once." I came here to say goodbye to you this time, you have helped me a lot during this time, and I hope to continue to learn with you if I have the opportunity in the future! β
"You're so polite!" Frunze also seemed to sigh, even regretfully, "To be honest, I really don't want you to leave at this time." You have a very high talent, Comrade Konstantin! With a little sharpening, you'll be a military man par excellence! If it weren't for Andre that guy calling me personally, I really wouldn't want to let you go! β
Rokossovsky actually thought the same way, and in the past few months, he has gained a lot from Frunze's side, and he has slowly begun to transform from an ordinary soldier to an excellent commander. Frunze broadened his horizons and gave him an idea of what he could do.
If he could, he would love to stay with Frunze, especially when the war was about to start, and he believed that Frunze would teach him more on the battlefield. However, he was summoned by another figure of extraordinary significance to him - Li Xiaofeng.
Rokossovsky always felt that he could get the opportunity to biochemical from ordinary soldiers, and it was very important for Li Xiaofeng. Before knowing him, Rokossovsky was just an ordinary soldier, but after getting to know him, his fate immediately took a 180-degree turn. To put it mildly, Li Xiaofeng is his Bole.
Not even Bole, in the October Revolution, it was that man who fully trusted him, handed over all military command to him without hesitation, and let his talents be displayed proudly. After the victory of the October Revolution, it was this man who pointed out his problem for a while -- his knowledge of military theory was too thin and he had not received systematic military training.
It didn't even just point out his problems, but also helped him find a solution to them, allowing him to ask Frunze for advice and learning. To tell the truth, Frunze was not from a professional background, but he had been engaged in military struggles for many years, thus accumulating a wealth of experience. And he is good at learning, and he also taught himself a lot of military theories. For Rokossovsky, who was born as a soldier, he was still competent, and these experiences and theories were summarized by Frunze himself, which was better understood by Rokossovsky, who was also a monk halfway.
In a figurative sentence, Rokossovsky met Frunze, like a sponge frantically absorbing nutrients. Although the study time is relatively short, Rokossovsky has a feeling that he has changed greatly from the previous him, although he himself can't say what is different for the time being, but he just knows that he has become more powerful.
"Konstantin, to be honest, I think it makes more sense for you to stay with me!" Frunze said with emotion. "The Czech Legion has already started a rebellion. The Kornilov gang did not stop either. In the south, we will soon have a fierce war. This time. I need you more here! β
Frunze was not right at all, with the rebellion of the Czech Legion, the whole of Ukraine and the Don River valley was already in chaos, all kinds of ghosts, snakes and gods jumped out, and within a few days, all kinds of counter-revolutionaries and counter-revolutionary gangs continued to announce the establishment of some so-called local governments.
Naturally, the Bolsheviks would not sit idly by and watch these clowns toss around casually, and the order of the Central Committee was soon down, as a rare military expert within the Bolsheviks. Frunze's task was to immediately organize the Red Army from Moscow to move south to quell the rebellion.
To tell the truth, Frunze felt that this burden was very heavy, because the strength of the Red Army at present was really weak, the hastily organized Red Army lacked training, the reserves of weapons and ammunition were not sufficient, and the key thing was that there was a shortage of officers with combat experience. If the rebellion is countered in such a situation, I am afraid that the results will not be very good.
In this case, Frunze, of course, hoped that Rokossovsky would stay, after all, there were no rebels in the Petrograd direction, there could be called a large rear. Let such a talent as Rokossovsky go to the rear nest, there is a bit of overkill.
So he did as much persuasion as he could: "Konstantin. I need you more here. As long as you are willing to stay, I can personally call Comrade Lenin and I will definitely be able to convince Comrade Andrei! β
At this moment, Rokossovsky said that it was completely false if he was not moved, and he personally really wanted to stay here in Frunze, there was an example to learn from, and there was a battle to fight, what a good opportunity this is!
However, Rokossovsky is a person who knows how to repay his kindness, and Li Xiaofeng has the grace of knowing him, and he must repay this kindness, even if it is at the expense of some particularly good opportunities. So he politely rejected Frunze's kindness: "Comrade Mikhail, thank you for your appreciation of me. But yesterday I promised Comrade Andrei that it is not a good habit to go back on his word. All I can say is, I'm sorry! β
Looking at Rokossovsky's resolute face, Frunze knew that it was impossible for a man who had made up his mind to be convinced, and he could only sigh: "Damn Andrey, this kid always makes trouble for me...... Well, Konstantin, I can only grant your request. However, I would like to say that if you change your mind, you can always call, write or telegram to me, I always have a place for you! β
Rokossovsky was also a little moved, as a young man in his early twenties, it was really unusual to be appreciated and valued by seniors who were a circle older than him. However, he still has no regrets about his decision. Because he knows the Tao, Li Xiaofeng has never been a person who doesn't know the priorities of the Tao, and the reason why he was asked to go to Petrograd is definitely for a reason! Of course, the current Rokossovsky didn't know what the reason was, but he had a blind trust in a certain immortal, thinking that a certain immortal would not let him down.
Watching Rokossovsky walk out of the office, Frunze was a little regretful, he really hadn't seen much of such a young man with military talent, and he really hoped that Rokossovsky would stay. He believed that Rokossovsky would grow up quickly, and maybe soon be able to take charge on his own, but ...... What a pity!
Just when Frunze was very regretful, the door of the office was suddenly pushed open again, and Rokossovsky went and returned, which made Frunze a little overjoyed, "Konstantin, you finally changed your mind, haven't you?" β
Rokossovsky smiled awkwardly and replied very sincerely: "No." Comrade Mikhail, it's just that I have a little premature idea about the situation in the lower reaches of the Don, and I feel that it is necessary to tell you before leaving! β
Frunze once again showed a regretful expression, but still said politely: "Ha Luha, things that can make you have ideas must be very important." Hurry up and talk about it! β
Rokossovsky took a deep breath and pointed at the map: "The current situation is that the southern part of Ukraine and the lower reaches of the Don River have been occupied by rebels. In the present situation, the enemy's best strategy is only one, and that is to quickly advance to the Far East...... From the map, the geographical location of Kharkiv and Tsaritsyn is very important......"
Frunze frowned, in his opinion, the geographical location of Kharkov was more important than Tsaritsyn. Because that is Ukraine's gateway to Moscow, if the rebels want to succeed, their goal should be to go straight to Moscow. Then the first goal should be to capture Kharkiv. And Tsaritsyn is not on Ukraine's line of communication to Moscow. There's no need for the rebels to go far, right?
Rokossovsky seemed to perceive Frunze's thoughts. Objectively speaking, such an idea is normal, and if the rebels really want to quickly overthrow the Bolshevik regime, then it is indeed the best policy to take the capital directly. But Rokossovsky did not think that the rebels would do this, or rather, he did not think that the rebels had that kind of strength.
Kharkiv is an important transport node to Moscow and an important industrial city, and the geographical location of this city is indeed extraordinary. But. It must also be seen that it is precisely because it is so important that the rebels have no use for it for the time being!
Why do you say this, because Kharkov was the seat of the Ukrainian Soviet government and party committee established by the Bolsheviks at this time, and it was itself a key point guarded by the Russian army. The city was well stocked, with weapons and ammunition in stock, and with the eyes of the Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party on it, to put it mildly, there was no room for failure here!
And, it must be seen as well. Whether it was the Czech Legion or the White Army, which cooperated with them in the rebellion, the strength was not particularly strong. A full battle is a force of 100,000 people, and charging in the direction of Moscow with such a small number of troops is a brain-dead act no matter how you look at it. To put it bluntly, even if the White Army concentrates its forces to take Kharkov, the losses will not be small.
Moreover, it must be noted that the strength of the White Army is not capable of infinite expansion, and without the support of the industrial base, their weapons and ammunition are used a little less. Moreover, the place where they started the rebellion was Ukraine, which was basically impossible to contact with the Entente, and they could not get any assistance by land or sea. It can be said that the weapons and ammunition consumed by the White Army are basically unable to receive foreign assistance. It would be very unwise to rush to Moscow in such a foolish manner.
Suffice it to say that if the White Army really marches towards Kharkov, then it is quite possible that it will turn into a decisive battle. Once the White Army lost, the bottoms were gone. Anyway, if Rokossovsky was the general of the White Army, I am afraid that he would not choose such a big gamble, and he really couldn't afford to gamble.
If the White generals had been wiser or smarter, they should not have recklessly chosen to try their luck in Kharkov, but would have chosen a more secure option. That is to find a way to accumulate strength and strengthen your strength. After accumulating enough stakes, find a way to advance north. From this point of view, then Tsaritsyn, which is at the confluence of the Volga and Don rivers, is more important than Kharkov.
First of all, Tsaritsyn is not a point of transport directly from Ukraine to Moscow, and this is not the point of fortification;
Secondly, since it is not a defense point, there will not be many troops, and with the current strength of the rebels, it is not a big problem to take Tsaritsyn;
Third, although Tsaritsyn does not have the direct strategic significance of Kharkiv, it can also advance into Moscow, and it can also bypass the heavily defended Moscow-Kharkiv communication line and advance into Moscow from the ribs;
Fourthly, Tsaritsyn is a large granary, and the seizure of this place will inevitably make the food crisis in the Moscow-Petrograd region even worse, and it can deal a heavy blow to the Bolsheviks economically;
Finally, from the point of view of external relations, it seems that developing to the East, to the empty Siberia, is more likely to receive foreign aid. Once the Entente chose to intervene in Russia, it would be almost impossible to aid the rebels from the heavily fortified Baltic direction, and the Black Sea direction would be firmly stuck by the Allies, and this road would not work. It was only in the Far East that there was an open space, and with the help of Japanese forces and the Trans-Siberian Railway, it was possible for the rebels to receive assistance.
Frunze's brow tightened, and he had to admit that Rokossovsky's analysis was very reasonable, if the rebels made a false shot, did not advance to Kharkov and turned to Tsaritsyn, then it was very likely that they would really be able to break through a path.
However, it makes sense, but no one dares to guarantee that the rebels will not have the courage to make a desperate bet, and you must know that the strength of the Red Army is also limited, and Kharkov and Tsaritsyn can definitely only give priority to one end.
So take care of Kharkov or take care of Tsaritsyn? Whether it is from the central government's decision-making or Frunze's personal thoughts, Kharkov is probably more important. Because of the loss of Kharkov, the whole of Moscow is exposed to a direct attack. And the loss of Tsaritsyn can only be regarded as an indirect threat.
But it doesn't seem appropriate for Frunze to just ignore Tsaritsyn, what if Rokossovsky says it? You must know that now that Donetsk has been lost, the straight-line distance between Tsaritsyn and Donetsk is not very far.
Frunze re-anchored on the map, carefully observing every city around Donetsk, and soon his eyes were fixed on Luhansk. According to previous reports, there have also been rebels around Luhansk, and the local Red Guards have even exchanged fire with the rebels.
If the presence of rebels around Luhansk is not accidental, and if the rebels do have the idea of getting involved in Tsaritsyn, then Luhansk must be their target. The straight-line distance between Luhansk and Tsaritsyn is not very far, and it can almost be said that Tsaritsyn is the meat on the side of Luhansk's mouth. If the goal of the rebels is Tsaritsyn, then Luhansk will definitely be taken first!
Thinking of this, Frunze had a sudden sense of enlightenment, he thought that he had found the key to solving the problem, but was his judgment correct? (To be continued......)
