Chapter 367: Education Changes
I wish you all a happy new year and success!
***********************
Before Qin Wei arrived in Chongqing, books about the Republic of China were quite popular, and film and television works on the theme of the Republic of China were also one after another, as if endless. The memories of the political darkness of the Republic of China and the hardships of the people's lives seem to be getting farther and farther away, and in their place, it seems that the Republic of China is not as we imagined. Even when reading some reports or articles, the Republic of China has almost become synonymous with "petty bourgeoisie" and "sentiment". Although it is not enough to "say that it must be called the Republic of China", it seems to be forming a fashion, and it has become a habit for everyone to bring out the ranks of many celebrities in the Republic of China era to bask in them. Qin Wei once read a description of Du Yuesheng:
"The Red Cross has set up many hospitals, such as Ningbo Epidemic Hospital and Renji Hospital, to help the wounded and sick. In addition, it has established the Hongkou Civilian Epidemic Hospital, which is dedicated to helping the poor, and the hospitalization and surgery, medicine and hospitalization expenses of seriously ill patients are all free. At the same time, the Red Cross also devoted itself to education, establishing many schools and donating money to schools...... This is about 1931, when the vice president of the Red Cross was named Du Yuesheng! β
After reading these lines, I felt for a while that Du Yuesheng seemed to have become a great benevolent person.
But everyone knows that Du Yuesheng is a green gang tycoon. The Green Gang has done a lot of things in Shanghai, and most of them are not good. Du Yuesheng herself also started with gambling and drugs. Together with Huang Jinrong and Zhang Xiaolin, he brutally suppressed the Shanghai workers' movement, not only designing to bury Wang Shouhua, the leader of the Shanghai workers' movement, but also instructing hooligans to attack workers' pickets and massacre the communists and workers.
Is this a good person?
Of course, Du Yuesheng is just an example. But if you think about it, is the Republic of China really as good as later generations described?
Qin Wei himself understands it very well. Many people who pursue the Republic of China are probably very aware of the imperfections of that era, and even know that the Republic of China is a tattered country, not to mention that there is no GDP that will be called rotten in later generations, and it is already appalling that some local governments openly encourage the common people to plant tobacco and collect big tobacco taxes. And the people's livelihood, one of the three people's principles pursued by the Republic of China, is also very bad, there are many problems in national construction, and the army is not particularly good at fighting...... To put it bluntly, the freedom of the Republic of China is simply the freedom of troubled times. In the final analysis, there is no legal system to protect it.
However, after staying in the Republic of China for a long time, Qin Wei realized more clearly that behind the "Republic of China fever" in later generations, behind the accumulated blocks in his heart with the wine of the Republic of China. But there may be a spiritual crisis lurking, as a certain writer said: "If it is said that the writing of the Republic of China in ideological and history textbooks is not lacking in demonization." So is there any suspicion of over-beautification and sacralization of the remembrance and praise of the Republic of China by later generations? Throw a person, a phenomenon, and a piece of history into the eighteen layers of hell. Which is the heavier sin or the enshrinement of the gods? β
In the final analysis, history should be treated rationally, properly evaluated, and it is irrational to beautify and scandalize. Later generations of China experienced a relatively turbulent historical period. The society has stabilized, but the view of history has not. For the understanding of the Republic of China, it is often because of dissatisfaction with reality, and looking for things that meet expectations in the history of the Republic of China. The demeanor of the Republic of China that later generations will miss. For example, tolerance and freedom are the result of the active efforts of many people of insight, but behind them, there is actually an obscure background such as autocracy and war.
Of course, that's a long way off.
But Qin Wei has been in the Republic of China for a long time, and there is one thing that is extremely unhappy.
He is very disgusted with those literati who have nothing to do and always like to put themselves on the side of justice, but can only say and will not do. And among these people, there are actually many people who are iron-clad! Facing these people is like a modern person facing Hai Rui, praising the other party's incorruptibility, but extremely hating the other party's "incompetence"!
Obviously, although there are many poor and self-disciplined literati in the Republic of China, most of them are not as miserable as imagined.
β¦β¦
"At the end of the Ming Dynasty, the 'Donglin Party' was full of food and had nothing to do, and always thought that the whole world had to follow their rules to be reasonable, but I didn't know that what they did was worse than Wei Zhongxian, who we scolded for hundreds of years, and the so-called 'eunuch party' led by Wei Zhongxian...... Maybe they know the truth, but they just don't want to admit it. After all, they're all so smart, and most of them are very knowledgeable! β
"Most of the literati in our Republic of China are ruthless, or dissolute and unconventional, or arrogant and uninhibited. Mr. Fu Sinian was not a party member in his life and refused to be an official, because he believed that a professor being an official was 'all about putting a flower on a big dung heap.' There was also a professor Liu Wendian, who dared to slap the table with Chairman Jiang, and his classic concept was that 'the university is not a yamen, and there is no need to flatter the powerful.' Professor Ma Yinchu is a well-known economist, some time ago, he published an article attacking some of the government's economic policies, and Chairman Chiang asked him to go to the official residence to explain, but Professor Ma was furious, saying, 'I don't go to see Chiang Kai-shek, he wants to see me himself!' ββ
"This is a literati worthy of admiration. Because they have either made amazing achievements in their field, or they have stuck to their principles and led by example, influencing those of us who come after them. β
"But we have a question: Are we too many literati? Especially in the field of literature! β
"In Germany and Japan, science and engineering talents account for more than 80 percent of the country's highly educated intellectuals, and in the United States, the proportion is more than 70 percent...... And we, not enough 20 percent! β
"Mr. Situ Leiden, the former president of Yenching University and a well-known friend to China, said that an average of 3 million to 7 million people die of hunger in China every year. Some say it was the war that led to the Great Famine. But in 1929, the American journalist Edgar . Snow once interviewed Salazi in Inner Mongolia, where there were no soldiers at all, but the land was full of hunger. And the most terrible ...... The bodies of local starving people often disappear before they are buried, and in some villages, human flesh is openly sold. β
"Hunger can destroy the most basic of humanity! Bai Xiude, a reporter for Time magazine in Chongqing, once saw something unbelievable: A very hungry couple once tied their six children to a tree in order to prevent them from following them out to beg for food, because when there are fewer people, it is easier to get alms than when there are many people; A mother goes out begging with her newborn baby and two older children in her arms and goes to the head of a village. The mother could no longer walk, so she sent the two children into the village to ask for it, and she rested under the tree at the head of the village, but when the two children came back, they found that the mother had starved to death, and the hungry baby was still sucking on her mother's nipple; There are also families who sell everything in exchange for the last full meal, and then the whole family commits suicide together......"
"We have a myriad of outstanding highly educated people in literature. The number of people in this field is more than 80% of the number of people in China who are highly educated, but the illiteracy rate in our country was still as high as 95.1% in the 28th year of the Republic of China (1339)! β
Ye Shengtao, Tao Xingzhi and other people of insight promoted mass education and advocated culture to save the country. We applaud their vision. Applause for their actions! However, Confucius said it more than 2,000 years ago. You can only learn something else when you have eaten enough. So. Before teaching, we need to find a way to let these countless people have enough food and clothing, and a place to stay......"
"But how can this be done?"
"That's something the government needs to think about, but it's also something we need to think about. In terms of education, we must first expand the number of students in science, engineering, agriculture and medicine. β
"But our school seems to be more heartfelt about literature."
"This has led to an endless stream of our writers. However, there are very few people engaged in natural science research and education...... That's a big question. β
"I've seen a lot of people who have achieved great achievements in literature lament that life is not easy, but I really want to settle accounts with these people...... In the eighteenth year of the Republic of China, after the establishment of the Nationalist Government, it continued to uphold the attitude of the Beiyang Government towards intellectuals. The salary of a university professor is 400-600 yuan. 260-400 yuan for associate professors, 200-260 yuan for lecturers, and 100-180 yuan for teaching assistants. At that time, the rent of a courtyard house in Beijing was only 20 yuan a month, and a family of four in Beijing could maintain a normal life for 60 yuan a month, and 100 yuan in Shanghai. Now, even if there is a war, this level has not decreased much. That is to say, intellectuals are the high-income class of our time! This is not an exaggeration. β¦β¦ To give another example, 'VIII. After the 13' incident, a famous poet and his wife moved to Hangzhou with their family, and it is said that the reason is very simple, the cost of living in Shanghai is too expensive. In Hangzhou, they lived in a secluded place, reading, writing, and meeting friends every day, and lived a very peaceful life. But this life of attachment to the mountains and rivers did not last long, and the couple decided to build a house of their own. They spent 1,700 yuan to buy 30 acres of mountainous land behind a mountain in Hangzhou, and then replaced the land to build a house. Construction of this new home began at the end of 1935, survived a winter of ice and snow, and was completed in the spring of 1936, costing more than 16,000 yuan...... At this level, they think that the cost of living in Shanghai is too expensive! β
"Our ambassador Hu in the United States, he has a student who loves to dress up and chase one of his female students. The female student refused, and the gentleman cried to Ambassador Hu. It happened that the girl also came to Ambassador Hu to complain about the beast teacher. Ambassador Hu persuaded: He stubbornly loves you. The girl replied: I stubbornly don't love him. Subsequently, the gentleman threatened suicide, and the girl gave in and married the 'beast teacher' in her mind. Soon, this gentleman cheated and stubbornly fell in love with a female poet......"
"Seriously, other people's lives have nothing to do with us, but I don't think we need much of this kind of 'home'. What we need most at present are those talents who can use knowledge to feed and clothe the people, make our scientific and technological progress, and play a good role in the people in more aspects...... Screaming, or waking up, must the people be fed and clothed in warm clothes, right? β
Therefore, I believe that the Ministry of Education should first set an example and discuss with major colleges and universities to reduce the funding for various majors in literature and increase support for science, engineering, agriculture and medicine. This is a serious attitude towards education! β
"βLi De!"
β¦β¦
The day after Dai Li's arrival at the Bai Mansion, the Central Daily published an article titled "Education Must Change," which was short and messy, but it caused another uproar in the tense atmosphere. (To be continued......)
