That year, in order to keep his promise, the 50-year-old Wang Zhenyu refused to run in the presidential election, but he still participated in World War II as a field marshal of the federal army.

At the end of 1940, Li Zongren was elected as the fifth president of the Chinese Federation.

In October 1960, Wang Zhenyu's adopted sons, World War II heroes Shen Quan and Zhang Xueliang, were elected president as candidates for the Kuomintang Socialist Party. Shen Quan served as president, and Zhang Xueliang served as premier. In the 1955 campaign, Shen Quan died of a heart attack, four years longer than in history.

On August 15, 1966, Wang Zhenyu died of illness in Anjiang. Sun Liren, then president of the Federation and a hero of World War II, personally flew to Anjiang to preside over the state funeral.

In Chang'an, in Beijing, in Shanghai, in Nanjing, in Wuhan, and in Anjiang, people spontaneously mourned the father of the country.

Leaders of the United States, Great Britain and the Soviet Union also flew to Anjiang to attend Wang Zhenyu's funeral.
