Chapter 34 Crowd Tactics

The Vietnamese heavy mortar bombardment was followed by silence for only a few minutes, followed by an overwhelming burst of artillery fire.

At this time, the more devils play a psychological tactic...... As we all know, the destructive effect of 120MM heavy mortars on fortifications is extraordinary, just like the bombardment that lasted for more than 20 minutes just now, the trenches of our army were blown up to pieces, and even the entire trenches in some parts were blown up.

However, fortunately, our soldiers are quite experienced in avoiding artillery, which is also one of the subjects of our intensive training, that is, they avoid artillery not simply hiding in the trench and not moving, but always pay attention to the whistling of the cannonball and judge whether there is danger from this whistling.

Because the soldiers of the special service company did not suffer many casualties, the soldiers of the first battalion inevitably increased some casualties because they were not trained in this area. But then again, the soldiers of the first battalion had not recovered at this time, and there were still many wounded, even if they had been trained in this area, they were afraid that they would not be able to do such evasive maneuvers.

As for why the Vietnamese army stopped for a few minutes and then fired again, it was because the Vietnamese army thought that after the artillery fire stopped for a few minutes, our army should think that the shelling was over, and it should rest assured that it would come out to build fortifications.

In fact, it is indeed as the Vietnamese army imagined, we really didn't expect the Vietnamese devils to play this trick, and we have always known that the Vietnamese army is not very good in terms of logistics and supply, so we feel that the Vietnamese army is almost the same after more than 20 minutes of shelling. Unexpectedly, this time, the Vietnamese army's artillery preparations were much more adequate than we imagined.

However, if the Vietnamese army thought that this would cause our army to suffer heavy casualties, it would look down on our agent company too much...... As soon as we heard the whistling of shells, we quickly realized that a new round of bombardment by the Vietnamese army was about to begin. So he lay down again in the trenches and bunkers.

It's different from the last one. This time it was not just a heavy mortar shell that hit it. There are also long-range artillery shells, which are easy to hear from the different shell whistling.

Of course, the target of these long-range guns is not the hilltop position, and as mentioned before, it is difficult for the long-range artillery to hit such a position as the hilltop position.

What surprised me a little was that the long-range artillery was aimed at the south of the main peak, that is, the positive slope of the Vietnamese army...... There are no units of our army there, what are they smashing shells there ?!

In the next second, I quickly understood that they were preparing for the infantry to charge towards the main peak.

It is said that although there is no deployment of our army troops to the south of the main peak, there is no cover at all. The Vietnamese army did not expect that they would lose the main peak in this situation, so there were almost no fortifications in the southern part of the country near the main peak, which meant that the Vietnamese infantry had no danger to rely on when charging the main peak.

But it would be different if craters were smashed on this dangerous road, which could provide cover for the Vietnamese troops to charge through.

I guessed correctly, the fire lasted for more than ten minutes, and before the shelling could completely stop, we heard the observer in the ridge position shouting at us: "The devil is coming!" ”

I ran along the dilapidated trenches with my guards to the south to take a look, and sure enough, a large number of Vietnamese troops with AK47s were approaching the main peak, and there was a reinforced company in large numbers, and as I had just guessed, they were advancing towards the main peak under the cover of the crater. In the process of advancing, there were even some Vietnamese army sappers and shovels to make some necessary modifications to the crater, making it a more suitable bunker for hiding.

That's pretty sensible. After the transformation, the rest of the Vietnamese army can also use it, and because of the steep slope of this slope, it is difficult for our army to cause damage to these simple fortifications, that is, the utilization rate of these reformed fortifications is quite high.

"There are devils over here, too!" Then the observers from the north reported to us the hostile situation.

Of course, the number of Vietnamese troops in the north was not large. I believe that the Vietnamese army in the north is the army responsible for encircling the first battalion, and they were deployed in the north according to our strategy of "attacking the east and attacking the west", and only after discovering the middle plan did they follow the soldiers of the first battalion all the way to catch up with the main peak.

However, their journey did not seem to be smooth, as can be seen from their burnt and bandaged wounded everywhere, and their casualties in our artillery and helicopter strikes were not small.

I basically didn't pay much attention to these Vietnamese troops in the north, on the one hand, because they themselves were the last of the crossbows, and on the other hand, because the north was a positive slope relative to our army, and our artillery could cover the Vietnamese troops in that area at any time.

In fact, the Vietnamese army is also well aware of this, so their formation in the north is very scattered, which can reduce casualties after being covered by artillery fire, but at the same time, it also means that the impact on the unit area of the main peak is insufficient.

It is therefore clear that the purpose of the Vietnamese charge in the north is only to harass or distract our troops.

There is nothing wrong with this, but it is hard for me to imagine that the Vietnamese army will throw in as many reinforcements as possible in the south...... You must know that the south side is only a few hundred meters wide, and there are many cliffs that are not suitable for climbing, which makes the Yue Devil black in front of us, which is worthy of the name "crowd tactics".

It should be said that the "crowd tactic" proved to be useless when the Makmi machine gun appeared, because this tactic, which was commonly used in the past, can even be said to be necessary and effective on the battlefield...... The war is fought by people, and after the appearance of the mark, the individual weapon was weak, and there was no machine gun, so a large number of people and a fast charge speed could easily break through the enemy's defense line.

The most classic battle was the battle between the British colonial army and the Zulus in Rhodesia in 1891, in this battle, a 50-man British detachment repelled the attack of 5,000 Zulus with only four Maci machine guns, killing 3,000 Zulus.

50 against 5,000, and 3,000 of them were killed...... This can be said to be unimaginable in the history of warfare.

This directly leads to the comprehensive negation of the "crowd tactics" in war, especially now that individual weapons are highly developed, and the "crowd tactics" are even more obviously dangerous.

However, there is also a saying on the battlefield called "the army is uncertain", and the tactics of crowds may not be applicable in the vast majority of modern warfare, but this does not mean that it can be completely denied. In the subsequent war, the crowd tactics still played a role in many special battlefields, for example, the Soviet army had an incident in the battle with the German army, the Soviet army could not attack a German defense line for a long time, and the Soviet commander made his subordinates rush towards the German army with bayonets...... As a result, the Germans were so frightened that they let the Soviets easily break through the defensive line.

Of course, there are also accidental factors in this, such as the German army did not expect the Soviet army to launch a group charge regardless of casualties, and the German army was not ready for hand-to-hand combat, etc., but in any case, the war is about the result.

Just as I used the "crowd tactics" to ambush the Vietnamese troops at the edge of the forest, it is actually not as simple as the "crowd tactics", but also includes "flanking attacks from both sides", "surprises" and so on.

There is a saying that "whether it is a white cat or a black cat, it is a good cat if it can catch a mouse", and this is also the case on the battlefield, there is no good or bad tactic, as long as it is suitable for the current combat environment, as long as it can defeat the enemy well and quickly, it is a good tactic.

It's just that what I don't understand is what is the significance of the Vietnamese army's "crowd tactics" used in front of us at this time, they have neither "surprise" nor any other tactics, right? If you want to say that there is a "two-sided flanking attack", then there is really one, but the one in the north is too weak, and it seems that it will not pose any threat to the main peak at all.

Later, I learned that this was actually a misjudgment by the Vietnamese commander on our troops.

The Vietnamese commander regarded us as troops of the 15th Airborne Army...... Airborne troops, besides the Airborne 15th Army, which other troops will there be?! Therefore, with the Vietnamese commander's understanding of the Chinese army, they easily thought of the shortcomings of the 15 th Airborne Army: insufficient firepower and ammunition.

In view of the lack of firepower and ammunition, the best way is to harass on the one hand and launch a group charge on the other.

Not to mention, this idea is really right, because the Vietnamese army is also holding AK47s with not weak firepower, and the Vietnamese army can usually shoot while rushing forward to suppress our army's firepower, plus the Vietnamese army has just carried out more than half an hour of artillery bombardment on our army's position, and it is very likely that our army has not reacted at this time!

It's just that what the Vietnamese army didn't expect was that what they were facing was not the Airborne 15th Army, but a composite battalion that had been in battle for a long time and whose weapons and equipment were not even much worse than those of the Soviet army.

At this time, although I didn't understand the Vietnamese army's fighting style, there was no reason not to eat the fat meat in my mouth, so I immediately made all parts ready for battle.

Combat readiness here is not limited to fighters with various types of guns at the front, but also bazookas, recoilless and mortars that can kill and damage the enemy in a large area, and mortars with a relatively long range.

Mortars in particular, have a much longer range than bazookas and recoilless guns, and they have a fast rate of fire...... If you put a shell in it, you can shoot one shot, and the theoretical rate of fire can reach 30 rounds per minute. As a result, it became an ideal artillery support for the infantry. It can be used to block the enemy's charging follow-up forces when necessary.

And here, our mortars are used to block the retreat of the Vietnamese army. (To be continued......)
