Chapter 542: Dunkirk Meat Grinder (1)
The Soviet-Finnish war made the mustache more and more jealous of the strength of the Soviet Union, and the speed of Germany's military expansion was further accelerated, but the United States, Britain and France were also wary of the Soviet Union, and this could be exploited. On the one hand, the mustache made people conduct actual combat exercises near the Soviet-German military demarcation line in Poland, posing as a jiashi who was about to attack the Soviet Union, so as to not only deceive hundreds of millions of dollars in loans from the United States, but also successfully paralyze the British and French governments; On the other hand, a large number of troops were secretly transferred westward and preparations were made for an all-out attack.
In June 1941, Germany unexpectedly blitzed Bergen and Oslo in Norway, and took complete control of the Kingdom of Denmark, forcing it to join the Axis powers.
At this time, the Luftwaffe, which had the second largest number of aircraft, had already used more than 1,000 Ju-88 horizontal/dive bombers with greatly improved range to carry out a preemptive large-scale raid on the main airfields in northern France, thus completely seizing air supremacy in northern France and clearing the way for the ground forces to continue their offensive.
In this time and space, because of the successful examples of China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression as a reference, Shijie countries were aware of the power of centralized use of armored forces in advance, so although there were still conservative Shili opposition and obstruction, France still formed the first armored army according to General de Gaulle's proposal. However, due to the gap in tank performance and the lack of actual combat experience of officers and soldiers, this ace force, which was pinned on by the French people, was no match for the German armored forces at all. The greater threat to them is the German Stuka bomber, whether it is a cannon attack or a cluster anti-armor submunition, it can be called the natural enemy of the tank
Under the advanced tactics of the German army's air-ground integration, the French First Panzer Army, which had more than 1,000 tanks and armored vehicles, was almost completely wiped out in just one day, while the Germans only lost 17 tanks, 29 armored vehicles and 11 aircraft.
The German armoured group took advantage of the victory and marched straight to the English Channel, forcing 400,000 British and French troops into a narrow strip of northern France, leaving only Dunkirk, a small port of only 10,000 inhabitants, as a sea retreat. But the port of Dunkirk is a very vulnerable target to constant bomber and artillery fire. If 400,000 people retreated from this port, under the heavy fire of German artillery. The consequences are unimaginable.
At the nearest point, the Germans were less than 15 kilometers from Dunkirk. But on July 24, 1941, the Germans received an order from the mustache himself to stop advancing. This order of the mustache puzzled the generals of the German tank forces, and Guderian looked up to the sky and sighed, Dunkirk was at his fingertips. but was ordered to stop! But contrary to the results in history. In this time and space, this order of the mustache was considered by later historians to be a clever move that almost changed the course of World War II
As a matter of fact. Even this order of the moustache in history cannot be said to be completely chaotic. The first is that after the war in northern France became clear, the Germans needed to preserve the strength of their armored forces for the next combat operation, and the terrain of Dunkirk was not conducive to the offensive of armored forces. A strong attack would inevitably result in excessive losses of Germany's elite armored forces, and the Luftwaffe commander Goering assured that the air force could take on the task of destroying the coalition forces in the encirclement, so the mustache believed him. And the reason why the same order produced diametrically opposite results was precisely because there was a huge gap in the strength of the Luftwaffe between the two time and space
During the evacuation of Dunkirk in history, this area was foggy for most of the time, and the German planes at that time were very weak in night warfare, so for most of the time, the Luftwaffe could only sit back and watch the British ships withdraw from Dunkirk to the trapped British and French troops, and the English Channel was very narrow, so the British successfully rescued more than eighty percent of the trapped troops.
At this time, however, German planes were now equipped with advanced airborne radars, so they could bomb British ships at night and in dense fog. Moreover, because of the greatly increased range, the combat efficiency of the Luftwaffe aircraft was several times higher than in history, and the number of aircraft that could participate in combat was also greatly increased (the airfields in the rear could be used), so the result was completely different
And unlike the historical Luftwaffe bombing targets, the mustache in this time and space was inspired by China's successful experience of "controlling the sea with air", and was not satisfied with destroying the 400,000 British and French troops in Dunkirk, but decided to use the British and French remnants in Dunkirk as bait to concentrate most of the Luftwaffe bombers to severely damage the main force of the British Royal Navy in order to clear the obstacles to landing on the British mainland, so the large-scale naval and air war in the history of mankind began
On the evening of July 26, 1941, thanks to the efforts of the British Royal Navy, the first batch of 1,312 people, mainly logistics troops, successfully left Dunkirk and returned to the United Kingdom. As soon as the retreat began, there could be no more secrets, and the situation was urgent, the British Admiralty began to requisition ships along the coast and along the Thames, and even called on all those who owned ships to go to Dunkirk through the radio, and these shipowners knew very well what the withdrawal of the expeditionary force meant to Britain, so they actively responded to the Admiralty's call, barges, tugboats, cargo ships, passenger ferries, fishing boats, motorboats and even private yachts, all of which went to sea and sailed to Dunkirk.
A total of 893 British ships and 198 French, Dutch and Belgian ships, a total of 1,091 ships of various kinds, joined the rescue process, mainly from six ports in the south of England, namely Hillness, Magat, Dover, New Haven, Folkestone and Ramsgott, and returned to England after receiving British and French officers and soldiers at Dunkirk.
On 27 July, hundreds of Stuka dive bombers (Note 1) of the Luftwaffe's 3rd and 2nd Air Forces, escorted by fighter jets, launched a massive bombardment of British ships in the English Channel, sinking hundreds of British ships in just one day
Note 1: Historically, because of the short range of the Stuka, it was basically a soy sauce player during the Battle of Dunkirk, but after the shortcomings of the flight range in this time and space were solved, the Stuka dive bomber, which had extremely high bombing accuracy and was favored by the mustache, naturally became the main force of the ship bombing.
