Section XXVII: Cowards
What Chodo was holding in his hand was a rough wooden stick, which could be used as a help when walking, and as a rudimentary weapon when in danger, and it was normal for Jodo to have such a stick in his hand when he was old, but his thoughts as he rubbed the stick in his hand floated to a long time ago, as if he had returned to the sky that was unusually dark, as if the ink in the ink bottle used by the monk was poured from heaven, but the fire on the ground was reflected on his face, Many people poured out of the narrow streets, and the shadows of the old buildings and ruined walls were shining with torches in people's hands, as if they had crawled out of the darkness of antiquity.
"God." Chodo didn't have many wrinkles on his face at that time, his eyes were still as sharp as eagles' eagles, his hair was scattered over his shoulders, he was wearing a fine piece of chain mail, and the long sword at his waist straddled behind him, he stood in front of an aristocratic mansion with a triangular roof, looking at the unscrupulous and ragged commoners, their faces with resentment and hatred, and their short sticks and pitchforks in their hands, and the sheer number of people made them more courageous.
"Kill her, kill her~~~." The civilians roared angrily, the momentum was like an unstoppable wave, and several family guards in front of the aristocratic mansion held their halberds, but their faces showed fear, and they could only retreat under the threat of the crowd.
"Return to the house." Looking at the outnumbered mob, Chodo could only order a few of his soldiers to retreat back to the house at once, and with the sturdy stone walls and sturdy gates, they could resist for a while. However, the mansions of the nobles were not castles, but only a little stronger than the houses of ordinary commoners.
"Boom~~." The soldiers hurriedly retreated into the house, slamming the heavy door shut and sticking a heavy bolt into the door, while the mob outside saw the soldiers retreating into the house, crowded up and slammed the door with their fists, sticks, and other blunt objects.
"Follow me." Seeing the mob crowded at the narrow gate, Chodo immediately led his soldiers up to the dark tower above the gate, and then ordered the servants in the house to carry up the boiling hot water, and above the stone gate there were four cylindrical drains. Chodo ordered the soldiers to pour boiling water into the drain. Immediately, hot water flowed down the drain, scalding the mob that crowded at the gate.
"Damn them, kill them." When the other mobs saw this, they immediately ducked. But they gathered outside the house and did not dare to take a single step. Just when Jodo was about to breathe a sigh of relief. He saw a scene that shocked and angered him.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa~~~." From another muddy and dirty street, a troop of men and horses marched in. They were dressed in a modest green suit that was different from that of the mob, holding torches and spears and swords, and among them were soldiers in armor with green eagle tail flowers painted on the outside, and behind them walked several nobles in robes of various colors, with cruel smiles on their faces.
"Damn, hell, the guards guard the gates." When Chodo saw these nobles, he knew that the road was over, and that the powerful nobles in the city had come together, and their strength was strong enough to conquer this weakly defended house, and he immediately walked down the gate and hurried to the rear.
This aristocratic mansion has been built for generations, with a high wall at the back, a courtyard and a cloister, and Jodo hurriedly searched for it in the cloister, and the servants in the mansion are now scurrying around like headless flies, and everyone feels that the tense is not good.
"See Madame? See Madame? Jodo grabbed every servant who passed by and said loudly to them.
"Madame with her child in the bedroom." Finally, a servant replied to Jodo.
"Ping~~~." Jodo immediately strode towards the bedroom, and when he reached the front of the bedroom, he slammed open the wooden door of the bedroom and made a ping-pong sound, and next to the large bed in the bedroom sat a beautiful woman with blond hair, she was wearing a white fringed dress, and her long golden hair seemed to shine even in the dark, she was sitting on a wooden chair, and placed her white and slender right hand on a wooden bed for a baby cradle beside her, the wooden bed was made of oak, and the surrounding guardrails were polished and painted with brown lacquer. Inside is wrapped in soft fine wool and woolen blankets for a sleeping little baby.
"Ma'am." Jodo strode in, his chain mail and sword clashing, and the baby's mouth pursed when he heard the sound.
"Shhh The beautiful woman put her finger to her lips and glanced at Jodo with some reproach, which seemed to remain eternally quiet in the midst of the noise and chaos outside.
"Madam, let's go, the Lunding family and other families have also joined the ranks of the mob, our soldiers can't resist for long, run away and I'll cover you." Chodo couldn't care so much at this time, he walked up to the young woman's side and said anxiously.
"No, I can't go anymore, they won't stop until they find me, dear Jodo my knight, take my children and run away." The blue eyes of the beautiful young woman were full of sorrow, she knew her situation very well, but she did not think that those who had been her friends, who had accepted her help and attended her banquets, would now attack her mercilessly and slander her.
"No, ma'am, I swore to protect you for the rest of my life, to protect you with my life, and you can't let me break my oath." Jodo shook his head excitedly, he held the hilt of his sword, the anger in his chest was uncontrollable, if he really wanted to kill those traitors one by one.
"If you still regard me as your mistress, obey my last command, and take my daughter and flee from here, from this city full of demons, so that she can live a long and peaceful life forever." By this time the beautiful young woman had no more tears in her voice, and she sat softly in her chair and covered her lips with her hands. And when she looked at the innocent child in the cradle, she strengthened her confidence.
"Why didn't he come to save you?" Jodo clenched his fists and roared tremblingly.
"He has his own grievances, he is the father of my children, the person I love the most, and if my sacrifice can fulfill him, then I will do that." The woman stopped crying, her expression became firm, she stood up, bent down to pick up the baby, and put it to her lips and kissed it. Hugging as if it was never enough.
"Boom~~~." Suddenly, a loud noise pierced their ears. Jodo turned around and drew his sword vigilantly, he knew that the gate was under fierce attack, and the nobles had a way to deal with this strong gate, as long as the gate was breached, then the house would be in no danger.
"Jodo. Hold her and leave. Do you know where you can get out? The woman hurriedly handed the child in her hand. Carefully wrapped in a blanket, her face was pale and haggard, and she held the small golden cross around her neck in her hand.
"Whew." Jodo looked at the woman in pain. He had to take her orders, as he had done, and as he was about to reach the door, he saw a decorative crossbow hanging above the fireplace, and reached out to take it off and carry it behind his back.
"Sir, let's go." A loyal servant had been waiting outside the door to lead Jodo to the kitchen, where there was a secret passage leading to the outside of the house, and the nobles would always have left themselves a way out in this dangerous and chaotic time.
When he passed through the narrow passageway, Jodo carried the baby to an abandoned warehouse outside the street, where his chain mail had been left in the house, wearing only a plain thick linen shirt, a gray cape behind him, a sword and a pouch around his waist, and the crossbow he had taken from the bedroom on his back. Jodo crawled out of the abandoned warehouse, carefully covering the exit with stones and hay, and walked down the filthy alley, which was usually crowded with prostitutes and beggars, but perhaps because of the riots in the city, it was deserted, and Jodo cautiously walked to the corner of the alley, from which he could see the incident in front of the house.
"Oh~~~." There was a cheer among the mob outside the house, and when Jodo escaped through the secret passage, they broke through the door of the house, and at the door lay the corpses of several guards, all with crossbows stuck in their bodies, and beside the mob stood the nobles and their crossbow-wielding soldiers.
"Got it, got her, this devil's prostitute/prostitute." Suddenly the mob let out another ecstatic cheer, and they dragged out of the house a woman in a long white fringed dress, her face was pale, her eyes were almost closed, and her hands grabbed the long golden hair that the thugs had grabbed her, and even in the presence of these distorted thugs, she remained noble and calm, as if she were a pure angel descending on earth, and the black hands of the mob desecrated her, and the white dress revealed her milky white skin in the tearing.
"Oh, no, no, God save her, save her." Hot tears fell from Jodo's eyes, and he wept and whimpered, his once strong arm was so weak at this time that he could only watch the scene happening in front of him.
"Kill, kill, kill~~~." The mob stamped its feet and shouted as if it were attending a feast, their faces twisted with cruelty and joy, and the young woman dragged to the center of the field looked like a lamb to the slaughter.
At this time, a middle-aged nobleman wearing a green woolen robe and flat soft fur with a dome, he had a pair of green eyes, a nose curved like an eagle, thin lips with a sarcastic smile, he stretched out his hand and raised it high, and suddenly the rioters in the field stopped making noise, and watched with bated breath, only to see the nobleman walk to the woman's side and pull out his sword violently, and slash at the woman's neck, the action was clean and neat.
"No~~~." Jodo's eyes were almost out of their sockets, the hands he was holding, the nails cut the palms unconsciously, the hostess he swore to protect had been killed like this, she was so pure and innocent, but she died so much, he couldn't even help her to collect the body.
"I am a coward, a coward who has broken his oath." Gautama held the stick and muttered to himself, his eyes were clouded, his hands had lost their strength, he was no longer a proud knight, he was just a coward. (To be continued......)
