Section 31: The Battle of Jinzhou

The Battle of Changsha shook the whole country again. In connection with the outcome of the Battle of Shandong, and the great changes in Mukden, the countries that closely followed the situation in China almost unanimously came to the conclusion that the Manchu regime was incorrigible!

It is worth mentioning that when Duan Qirui's sixth town was squatting in Jinzhou and watching, he was copied by the 10th Division of the Northern Army.

The 10th Division under the command of Shi Dashou was composed of the Shengguang Cavalry Brigade and the 28th Brigade of Cheng Erhu, and adopted a large detour strategy to outflank the western Liaoning Corridor. They passed through the front banner of the left wing of Horqin, passed through Zhangwu, Fuxin, and Yizhou (now Yixian) and went straight to Jinzhou, seized Jinzhou by false means, cut off the throat of the connection between inside and outside the Guan, and created fighters for the total annihilation of the 20th Town.

This is a predetermined plan. After the departure of the 10th Division, under the supervision of Shi Dashou, Xiaoxing stayed overnight, accelerated the march, and went straight to Jinzhou. Due to the damage of the only radio station and the cut off from the military department, they did not know that Zhang Zuolin launched the Fengtian Incident, killed Wu Luzhen, imprisoned Tang Shaoyi and Zhang Shaozeng, and dedicated the great gift of Fengtian City to Lushan, not to mention that the imperial court had replaced the commander of the sixth town, and the famous Beiyang general Duan Qirui led the sixth town to Jinzhou under the supervision of Liangbi!

The Shengguang Cavalry Brigade, the vanguard of the 10th Division, continued to act according to the original plan. However, their trip was two full days ahead of the original date. On August 18, the Shengguang Cavalry Brigade had arrived in the area of Dashengbao west of Jinzhou. Constantly hearing the news that Jinzhou was occupied by the Qing army, Sheng Guang sprinkled reconnaissance cavalry to collect intelligence on a large scale, and even touched the Fengtian Incident from the fugitives who fled to the Guannei in Fengtian, and Zhang Zuolin responded to the news of the Northern Army. Overjoyed, he flew to Shi Dashou who led the infantry south behind him, and organized a small force to approach Jinzhou. Verify the reality of Jinzhou. It was finally confirmed that Jinzhou was indeed occupied by the Sixth Town.

Since the sixth town occupies Jinzhou, then Shanhaiguan is empty! Since he was unable to obtain instructions from his superiors, Sheng Guang, after repeatedly understanding the terrain and geography, resolutely led the cavalry brigade to cross the Xiaoling River and the Daughter River, and marched in the direction of Lianshanbao (now Jinxi). Along the way, there were several battles with the Sixth Town Logistics Force, all of which were small in scale. On August 20, the main force of the cavalry brigade occupied Lianshan Fort, cutting off the return route to the sixth town.

This is the decisive power that an excellent general should have at a critical juncture. The reason why Sheng Guang wanted to go south to Jinxi was, of course, the idea of suppressing the sixth town and annihilating it on the spot outside the pass. Sheng Guang's doing so was based on an analysis of the relative strength of troops. Now that the heavens have descended. The twentieth town no longer exists, and the nearly 40,000 soldiers and horses of the two divisions of the Northern Army have an absolute advantage over one town in Beiyang.

When Sheng Guang made up his mind to cut off Duan Qirui's back road in the Western Liaoning Corridor, he seemed to have forgotten his own safety. Forget that he had only three cavalry regiments in his hands, less than 4,000 men.

Cheng Erhu Brigade will come up. The Ninth Division will come up. Sheng Guang firmly believes. So. When he occupied Jinxi, he sent people to contact Shi Dashou again, and ordered the construction of fortifications. Prepare to block the westward retreat of the Sixth Town.

The news of the appearance of a large number of enemy horsemen in Jinxi shocked Duan Qirui and Liangbi. Because the Lushan Department that occupied Mukden was not active, Duan Qirui did not listen to Liangbi's advice to withdraw his troops immediately, and stayed in Jinzhou to watch the situation, which was actually a gesture. Fengtian has been lost, and Duan Qirui knows that it will be difficult to recover Fengtian with only the soldiers of the sixth town and one town. Although Zaifeng had previously given him an order in the name of the Military Aircraft Department, asking him to go east to recover Fengtian City.

Duan Qirui did not carry out this order (Liangbi also thought that it was impossible to go east to Fengtian). He is not worried about the accountability of the imperial court at all now, in Duan Qirui's opinion, the Manchu court is dead, and now it is fighting for Beiyang, not for the Manchu Qing. The main reason that prompted Duan Qirui not to leave without a fight was the situation in Shandong. Before, he was looking forward to getting the news of Shandong's victory, and if his old lord succeeded in Shandong, Duan Qirui hoped to transfer back at least one town, preferably the third town he had led for the northern front. In that case, it would make a lot of sense to occupy Jinzhou. Because Duan Qirui thought that after getting reinforcements, he would counterattack Fengtian, defeat the Northern Army of the Mengshan Army, and then turn around to deal with the main force of Long Qian in the south, at least he could play a pattern of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, right? Coupled with the support of Britain and Japan for Yuan Shikai, a complete victory over the Mengshan army was not hopeless. And what about withdrawing to Shanhaiguan at this time? Lushan will definitely take the opportunity to occupy this famous city outside the Guanwai, which is extremely important in terms of geographical location. In that case, the counterattack on Mukden would be more difficult. Therefore, Duan Qirui adopted a method that seemed to Liangbi and most of the generals of the Sixth Town to do nothing, and squatted in Jinzhou stupidly without a fight.

But news of a big defeat came from Shandong! The first town of Yinchang was wiped out in Wuding Mansion, resulting in the main force of Beiyang, which could not attack the position of the Shandong Army in Dezhou, so it could only hurry up and retreat! In this way, Duan Qirui knew that things were bad, and it was pointless to stay in Jinzhou. Withdraw, close the door of Shanhaiguan first! Don't fucking stage the tragedy of Hong Chengchou outside the gate three hundred years ago.

But it's late! A cavalry that suddenly appeared occupied Jinxi, the only way to pass, and its own rear road was cut off!

Duan Qirui no longer hesitated, and immediately led the army westward, recaptured Jinxi with all his might, opened up the road, and returned to Shanhaiguan and even Jingshi!

The battle began on August 22, and the fighting raged in the area of Jinxi, and the Shengguang Cavalry Brigade used the urgently constructed fortifications to resist the attack of the sixth town.

What is Lu Shan doing? Lu Shan, who was considered by Long Qian to be the most flexible, immediately set his sights on the sixth town after hearing about the changes in the twentieth town! As Sheng Guang thought, he annihilated this Beiyang elite soldier on the spot outside the pass, clearing the way for the army to enter the pass! Before he arrived in Mukden, he told Chief of Staff Deng Qinghua, Deputy Division Commander Fan Deping, and Chief of Staff Jiang Fangzhen that the overall situation outside the Guanxi had been decided, and now it was the bone of the Sixth Town, and it would be good if we could eliminate the Sixth Town outside the Guanwai......

However, the contact with Shi Dashou was broken. Lu Shan judged that there was a problem with the radio station, and that thing was good, but it was extremely unreliable. Lu Shan didn't think at all that Shi Dashou's 10th Division would encounter other problems, such as being defeated by the Sixth Town.

When studying the history of the founding war, historians found that the generals under Long Qian had a common characteristic, that is, their confidence was too high! Taking risks has become a significant sign that even adventures can be successful. Therefore, I have to sigh an old saying: Heaven and earth are all working together, and heroes are not free. In fact. Studying the founding history of all dynasties and dynasties, almost all have common characteristics.

But for Lu Shan, who was still outside Fengtian City, it was just an idea at that time. Lu Shan entered Mukden, while appeasing Zhang Zuolin and other rebel generals, stabilizing the situation in Mukden, and counting military supplies. On the one hand, he ordered the Xiong Xun Brigade to stealthily move westward to find fighters. Lu Shan did not even have time to meet the imprisoned Tang Shaoyi and Zhang Shaozeng, although Tang Shaoyi asked to meet Lu Shan several times.

Zhang Zuolin was worried about falling to the Mengshan army. Before the war between Japan and Russia, that is, five years ago, Lu Shan had fought a battle with Zhang Zuolin in western Liaoning. A stray bullet in Lu Shan left a scar on his face. It's disfigured. And his brother Zhang Zuoxiang was captured in the service. Zhang Zuolin thought of brotherhood and proposed to release Zhang Zuoxiang several times, but Lu Shan refused. It was not until after the Battle of Shendanbao that Lushan received an order from the Shandong headquarters before withdrawing troops from Beiman. Ask him to release Zhang Zuoxiang. Zhang Zuoxiang returned to Zhang Zuolin's side safely. Zhang Zuolin took into account the grudges of this battle. For a while, the time was a little shaken, but Zhang Zuoxiang, who had been a prisoner in the Lushan army for a long time, dispelled his brother's concerns and thought that Lushan was majestic. It is by no means a grudge. Moreover, the war between the two armies is not a grudge. This finally prompted Zhang Zuolin to launch the Fengtian Incident.

When he saw Lu Shan again, Lu Shan's attitude completely dispelled Zhang Zuolin's remaining concerns. Lu Shan touched the scar on his face and said to Zhang Zuolin, Ha Luha, I almost killed my brother that time. It seems that we still have a fate, otherwise we wouldn't have sat down and worked together in five years! This time, Brother Yuting was deeply rewarded by Commander Long, and the last few calls mentioned Brother Yuting again and again, so that the brother could effectively solve Brother Yuting's difficulties. At present, the situation outside the customs is initially decided, Brother Yuting is familiar with Nanmandi, and brother, I still have to fight Shanhaiguan, Fengtian security, and Brother Lao Yuting to maintain it.

Zhang Zuolin dispelled his worries, his heart was full of joy, and he naturally agreed, and even proposed to be the vanguard of the army and fight to the death with the sixth town of Beiyang! Lu Shan smiled and said, Brother Yuting, don't worry, the battle is still fought by you, and at present, according to Commander Long's instructions, to help the brother maintain the rear, so that the brother has no worries, it is also a real achievement.

What Lu Shan is most worried about is Shi Dashou. This is the reason why he ordered Xiong Xun to come out in hiding. If the 10th Division arrives in Liaoxi on an appointment, then they will definitely cut off the retreat of the 6th Town. It's not good to scare the Sixth Town too soon.

After Xiong Xun's 25th Brigade was covertly dispatched, on August 20, Lu Shan left Deng Qinghua and Ding Xiaofu's Brigade to sit in Fengtian and appease the rear. He led the 26th Brigade of Fan Deping, the cavalry regiment of Jiang Cunxian, and the two artillery regiments led by Huang Jinhui to leave Fengtian and march to Jinzhou.

This day was the day when the Shengguang Cavalry Brigade occupied Lianshan Fort and cut off Duan Qirui's return route.

On August 21, Lushan, who had arrived in Xinmin, received a report from Xiong Xun's flying cavalry that the enemy in Jinzhou had retreated, and that Xiong Xun had arrived in Guangning at that time, and that the forward cavalry battalion that had traveled a day before had arrived at the 13th Mountain Station, and Jinzhou was in front of him. Xiong Xun's report said that he had quickened his march, no longer marching at night, and was preparing to march into Jinzhou with a forced march, and if the Sixth Town resisted, he would confront it in Jinzhou for backup, and if the Sixth Town retreated, he would pursue it and strive to "pull" this great enemy.

Xiong Xun's report did not contain any news from the 10th Division.

Lu Shan Zhilu said that Xiong Xun had already moved, this is not a request for instructions, but a report and a record. Therefore, Lu Shan refused the banquet of Tang Yulin and other generals, and ordered his subordinates to speed up the march, with a limit of 120 miles a day, to catch up!

What is Shi Dashou doing? Very simple. He's on his way. After being thrown off by Sheng Guang, because he was an infantry and carrying a baggage, Shi Dashou couldn't walk fast. However, after receiving a series of news from Sheng Guang, he still made the correct response, and after consulting with Chief of Staff Shang Fengchun, Deputy Division Commander and Commander of the 28th Brigade Cheng Erhu, he led the 84th Regiment with Shang Fengchun to advance at a normal speed, and he led the two regiments of Cheng Erhu Brigade to advance lightly, except for ammunition and two days of dry rations, the rest of the equipment was thrown to Shang Fengchun, and along the route indicated by Sheng Guang, forcibly marched to catch up with the cavalry brigade that broke ahead.

This process can be called perfect, showing the good overall situation and strong action of the generals and commanders of the Northern Army.

On the evening of 23 August, Shi Dashou and Cheng Erhu led the 82nd and 83rd regiments to cross the Daughter River and occupy Dahongluo Mountain.

Shi Dashou asked in a deep voice, "When you came, who was in the hands of Jinxi City?" ”

It was reported that the position had not yet been breached, and that the Sixth Town was still blocked.

"Well done. Brothers. You go back and report to Brigade Commander Sheng, and ask him to shrink his position, control the main points, and take the road in his hands. We'll be there shortly. ”

After the messenger returned, Shi Dashou said to Cheng Erhu, "Now the Shengguang defense line may be broken through at any time, and there are still more than 50 miles to Jinxi, and I am afraid that I will not be able to catch up." Why don't we turn due east and directly assault Duan Qirui's middle or rear road, disrupting the deployment of the Sixth Town. ”

Cheng Erhu agreed. Shi Dashou immediately ordered the cavalry signal soldier Pegasus to inform Shang Fengchun to throw away his baggage. Bring up the eighty-fourth regiment. While reorganizing the troops in his hands, he decided to take advantage of the night assault to disrupt the deployment of the sixth town and indirectly support Sheng Guang in the bitter battle.

Shi Dashou didn't know what to do. Just when he and Cheng Erhu agreed to a decisive assault. Xiong Xun has entered Jinzhou City. Finding that it was an empty city, regardless of fatigue, he led the 25th Brigade to catch up.

Shi Dashou and Cheng Erhu led the 82nd and 83rd regiments to Gaoqiao. A stick hit the head of the rearguard troops of the 6th Town, and the melee was fought all night, because the main forces of the 6th Town were concentrated in Jinxi to attack Shengguang's blockade, and the two infantry regiments of the 10th Division captured Gaoqiao Town and captured it very much. At dawn the next day, the 82nd Regiment found that a unit in the direction of Jinzhou was rushing over, thinking that it was the main force of the 6th Town, so it quickly seized the position to block the attack, and only at dawn did it find that it was its own people, and it was the 73rd Regiment of the Xiongxun Brigade Forward Regiment that caught up. Shi Dashou was overjoyed, and immediately ordered to join forces and fight southward.

In the early morning of August 24, Duan Qirui, who understood that he was caught in the pincer net, stopped the request of his subordinates to reflexively save the heavy guards, leaving a mark to take care of the back road, and concentrated the main force to storm the Shengguang defense line. ”

At 10 o'clock in the morning, Sheng Guangzhong, who personally went to the front line to command the decisive battle, was killed. A piece of shrapnel cut open his stomach, his intestines flowed out, and the military doctor had no time to deal with it, and the fierce general who had missed the battle of King Qin for counterattacking Li Chun's serious abdominal injury to Zhengjiazhuang's attack died of excessive blood loss on the eve of the national victory. This is another brigade commander who died in the Mengshan Army after the death of Duan Baochang in Shandong, but Sheng Guang's status in the Mengshan Army is much higher than Duan Baochang's. If Sheng Guang lives to the founding of the People's Republic of China, his future is unlimited.

Sheng Guang's personality is somewhat like Feng Lun. He despises military discipline and is lustful and greedy, but he is brave and witty, and extremely loyal to Long Qian. With Lushan's march to Guanwai, Sheng Guang became obsessed with cavalry, and eventually became the commander of the cavalry brigade, and his greatest achievements were made in the Northern Manchurian bandits. Sheng Guang was the only officer to marry a former Mengshan courtesan, and his "original" wife was Huang Yu, the most beautiful of the seven prostitutes Long Qian rescued from Sun Dewang's butcher's knife, and was now a famous surgeon in the Mengshan Army. Sheng Guang later humiliated Topaz's experience, and the relationship between husband and wife had actually broken down long ago. He secretly married a concubine in Shandong, worried that Long Qian would pursue him, so he raised him in other places and had a son. After he arrived outside the Guan, he took in a beautiful little widow when he was stationed in Jilin, but he did not give birth to children.

In 1911, Sheng Guang was posthumously awarded the rank of lieutenant general of the army, and entered the martyrs' shrine to enjoy the sacrifice forever. And Duan Baochang, who was also the brigade commander, was only posthumously awarded a major general, and did not enjoy the glory of entering the Martyrs' Shrine.

Sheng Guang won the Battle of Jinzhou with his resolute determination. The Sixth Town that Duan Qirui escaped from was already a remnant of the army, and he had no intention of fighting. Sheng Guang used his sacrifice to draw a successful end to the battle outside the Guanwai. His achievements outside the Guan, especially the exploits in the Battle of Jinxi, were worthy of the honor given to him by Long Qian.

Sheng Guang was the backbone of the cavalry brigade, and Sheng Guang's death led to the collapse of the cavalry brigade's defense line. Duan Qirui led all the 12th Association of the 6th Town and the 11th Association to break out of the encirclement and rushed towards Shanhaiguan, even discarding the artillery. Xiong Xun and Cheng Erhu pursued the two brigades directly, and on the way to pursue, they annihilated the broken 11th Association and 21st Standard. But Duan Qirui finally fled back to Shanhaiguan with less than half of his soldiers and horses, and did not set up defenses, but ran towards the Beijing division without stopping. Xiong Xun's brigade, which had caught up fiercely, occupied Shanhaiguan on the night of 26 August, but the Japanese troops stationed in Shanhaiguan under the Xinchou Treaty blocked the way under the pretext of exercise, and without receiving orders, Xiong Xun did not want to clash with the Japanese army rashly, so he stopped the pursuit.

During the campaign, the 9th and 12th Divisions of the Northern Army annihilated the main force of the 11th Association of the Sixth Town, as well as most of the artillery standards, engineer battalions and directly subordinate teams of the Sixth Town, and a total of more than 6,700 enemies were annihilated. The Northern Army suffered more than 2,100 casualties, half of which were losses of cavalry brigades.

The Battle of Jinzhou resulted in the Qing court's total losses outside the pass and opened the door to the north. The situation became clearer, even if the Shandong army did not launch an attack on Zhili, the Beijing division would not be able to defend it. Since the establishment of the Manchu Qing Dynasty, it has regarded Manchuria as its fundamental and important place, and from this derives the maladministration of not allowing the Han people to leave the customs. However, with the southward migration of the Manchus and the southward shift of the political center of gravity, the vast land of Kanto was in a "primitive" state, and even the political system was different from that of the eighteen provinces of Kannai. The de facto abandonment of the Kanto by the Manchus led to a strong coveting of this geographically important and fertile land by Japan and Russia, and the construction of the Manchurian Railway exacerbated the situation in the Kanto. Now there was finally a turning point, and a Mengshan army rooted in Manchuria rose to the Kwantung region, and in addition to completely dispelling the illusions of those who still had the slightest hope for the Manchu Qing dynasty, what was more important was that the country's military force finally became the power to dominate Manchuria. It is worth mentioning that after the founding of Long Qian, the former Northern Army became a powerful faction of the National Defense Force, which profoundly affected the country's political trend. When tracing a series of major events that took place later, we must start with the birth of the "Bailing Detachment" in order to explore its roots. (To be continued......)
