202 Preparation
Rokossovsky summed up all kinds of problems exposed by the Red Army since the beginning of the war, and he spoke very carefully and devotedly, and the participants did not feel at all that there was nothing wrong with doing the summing up work at this time, and even many people even took out the notebooks they carried with them to take notes, and some people kept asking to speak, either to put forward new opinions or to supplement Rokossovsky's speech, and the atmosphere was really harmonious and warm.
At the beginning, Li Xiaofeng was ready to interrupt Rokossovsky's summing up work, because what he wanted to hear for the time being was not the so-called lessons learned, but what he wanted to hear was the operational deployment and plan, hoping that Rokossovsky could come up with a set of effective methods to defeat Guderian.
However, when Li Xiaofeng saw more and more army commanders and division commanders asking for speeches and carefully taking notes, he dispelled this thought, and he quietly listened to Rokossovsky's speech, looking like a good student.
And his attitude also made the commanders, army commanders and division commanders of the group army very happy, it has been a few months since the start of the war, and this battle has been fought aggrieved! In the past, they tried again and again to persuade the Front and the General Staff, or constantly put forward opinions, but they really did not agree, and they only received reprimands and accusations from Tukhachevsky.
They really need a superior who can respect them and give them a chance to express their opinions, which is what Rokossovsky is doing now is what they have been dreaming of since the start of the war.
When the commanders, army commanders, and division commanders of the group army compared the very different differences between Tukhachevsky and Li Xiaofeng, they couldn't help but get closer to someone. Compare and throw away! Look at Comrade Andrei, who is a member of the Politburo and belongs to the top leader of the country. They all listened to us with great patience and humility. And you are a member of the Central Committee, and you can't do it enough. Don't take us people seriously at all, cut! What the hell!
I have to say that Tukhachevsky is really bad at the political level, and it is not an exaggeration to say that he is an idiot in this respect, not to mention that he is less qualified than Li Xiaofeng and Voroshilov. And what's worse is that he is too confident in his military qualities, he thinks he is a genius and a great military strategist. Belong to the top of the school.
Since he is a top student, why should he listen to a group of scumbags chirping crookedly, and this psychology makes Tukhachevsky always deal with the relationship between superiors and subordinates in the same way that a teacher treats his students and a father treats his son, and the result is naturally very bad.
And Li Xiaofeng is different, he never thinks that he is a genius, if he hadn't gone to heaven by mistake and mixed up with a temporary formation, even if he crossed over, he would just be a scumbag. So he never thinks that he is much better than others, and the more professional things are, the more "humble" he is. And his "modesty" is undoubtedly very much to the taste of the officers, who are in need of an audience like Li Xiaofeng.
In a sense. Li Xiaofeng is actually playing the role of a confidant sister and a psychological counselor, and for many depressed people, sometimes a qualified audience can make them satisfied and happy.
For example, now, the senior officers of the Bryansk Front are very happy, and they generally believe that a certain immortal is a good person and a good superior. If Tukhachevsky knew that he could win the affection of the officers by doing nothing and just being a humanoid backdrop, he would probably regret it.
All in all, after summing up by the senior officers of the Bryansk Front, the main problems of the Red Army were its bloated structure and low efficiency, its one-sided pursuit of the performance of its main battle equipment while neglecting the modernization of logistics and maintenance equipment, its lack of refinement in tactics, and its one-sided ideological emphasis on politics while ignoring the personal feelings of officers and men.
In the end, Li Xiaofeng concluded: "These experiences and lessons are very valuable, and they are what the Red Army needs most now, and I will report to the Central Military Commission as much as possible the problems that the comrades have responded to, and strive to find ways to solve these problems as quickly as possible." β
Speaking of this, Li Xiaofeng smiled and pulled the meeting back to the whole: "Now, let's continue to talk about the next battle, Comrade Konstantin, you can talk about your tactical concept in detail!" β
Rokossovsky realized that he was too excited just now, and he deviated from the topic for a while, but what touched him more was that someone was not unhappy at all, let alone criticized him for going off topic, but continued to trust him and let him continue to express his opinions.
After the discussion just now, Rokossovsky also found a feeling, and he said: "Although our Bryansk Front has the strength of five army groups, it seems that it is not a big problem to fulfill the instructions of the military commission. However, we must realize that only the 6th and 16th armies of our army have arrived in the Bryansk region, and the remaining three armies are still in the midst of intense marching, and it will take some time to reach the battlefield, which means that we may only have less than two army groups available in the last half month, and it will still be quite difficult to stop the enemy from regaining a stable front. β
This is the big truth, the 21st Army closest to Bryansk is in Smolensk, and the army has just completed the replenishment of troops, and a considerable part of the heavy weapons (such as tanks) are not in place, according to the General Armament Department, Chelyabinsk is still intensively producing, and it will be about late November to supply enough tanks to the 21st Army.
In other words, although the 21st Army now has a mechanized army in its establishment, it is actually a pure infantry army. Not only tanks, but also the 21st Army lacked anti-tank guns, and the vast majority of the artillery under the divisions and corps were howitzers or mortars, and the number of cannons and specialized anti-tank guns was very limited, and even some units could only make up the numbers with outdated anti-tank guns.
In any case, the combat effectiveness of the 21st Army is quite limited, and at most it can only be used as light infantry. In addition to the 21st Army, the 20th Army was also in Borisov, before the army rushed to "reinforce" Minsk in accordance with the orders of the General Staff, ready to participate in the "Battle of Minsk", of course, everyone knows that this is Tukhachevsky's sheep's head and selling a dog's head, and the real task of the 20th Army is to participate in the Minsk counterattack operation.
It's a pity that with Rokossovsky's side was penetrated. The "Battle for Minsk" was abandoned. The 20th Army on the way could only make a temporary U-turn. Turn to Bryansk. What can be regarded as good news is that the army group has completed the replenishment, and the armies are full of pits, although most of the mechanized armies under its command are filled with T-26 and BT-5, but it is better to have tanks than nothing, right?
What could really help Li Xiaofeng was the 12th Army, which had suffered relatively small losses in previous battles, and most of its officers and men had combat experience, and served as the main force in the garrison of Minsk. The army group was fully replenished with equipment, and although there were still some vacancies in the establishment (each division, generally only about 10,000 people), its combat effectiveness was still very good.
The only problem is that the army group is still in Stolbutsy, on the outskirts of Minsk, some distance from Minsk, and even further from Bryansk. Moreover, part of the army group was still engaged with the German army, and it would take time to withdraw from the battle.
All in all, the situation of the Bryansk Front is still very dangerous, and for the time being, it can only rely on the 6th and 16th armies and the somewhat less powerful 21st Army to wrestle with the Germans.
"That's the way it is, there are a lot of downsides. But even then, I think it will be possible to hold off the enemy in Bryansk. Rokossovsky changed his mind. He confidently said: "The enemy is very tired after the previous period of continuous fighting, and if he continues to break through to my territory, their supply problems will be even more severe, not to mention that winter is coming, and our climate is enough for the delicate Germans to drink a pot!" β
The officers let out a burst of laughter, and Rokossovsky's joke dispelled some of the dark clouds that were dense in everyone's hearts, but soon Rokossovsky straightened up and continued: "In addition, with the great retreat of TongguΓ², we have gained enough time to build a defensive line, and I believe that it will take some time for the enemy's first and second tank clusters to cross Belarus and enter Russia, but this does not mean that we can sit back and relax, the enemy's previous advance speed must have been seen by everyone, let them attack, I'm afraid there is only one dead end! β
Rokossovsky made it clear that he had to find every way to cause trouble in the German route, and that the Germans had to slow down. Li Xiaofeng asked: "Didn't you reserve some blocking troops before?" Are they not enough? β
Rokossovsky replied in the affirmative: "That is certainly not enough, the enemy does not lack the determination to drive straight forward, and they should also know that if they do not end the battle before the cold winter comes, then it will be difficult for them to hold the existing front." I judged that they would swoop as far as possible in the direction of Moscow, and the usual small force of blocking troops would either run over them directly or ignore them. There is no way to completely hold back the enemy with the army alone! β
"And what do you want to do?"
"The Air Force can do a great deal," Rokossovsky replied, "and I hope that the Front will be able to use enough air power to strike at the enemy, not only against the enemy's troops assembled and moving, but also on the lines of communication and the distribution of various supplies." In my judgment, as the enemy continues to go deeper, they will have less and less air cover! β
Rokossovsky was not wrong in his judgment, after the capture of Kalinkovich and the advance to the Gomel line, Guderian received very little air support, on the contrary, every day he had to receive greetings from the Red Air Force, the number of tanks and other vehicles destroyed was increasing day by day, and many times he could only order his troops to disperse. Because once assembled, it would be attacked by the Red Army. Even Guderian began to think about whether to rest during the day and march at night.
He complained to Bock more than once: "From sunrise, Bolshevik fighters, bombers and attack planes have been wreaking havoc on my head, while our air force has been nowhere to be seen, and I need air cover, otherwise my tanks and cars will be completely destroyed by the Russians before they rush to Moscow!" β
The Luftwaffe was actually quite aggrieved, the reason is very simple, they also encountered the problem of short legs, neither BF-109 nor FW-190 could penetrate deep into the territory of Russia, even if they barely flew over, there was little fuel left, and they couldn't stay for a few minutes.
"Can't you just repair the field airfield?" Guderian was furious.
But yes, but the Red Army would not allow the Germans to rush to repair field airfields so easily, and the line from Kalinkovich to Bryansk was a key area of the Red Air Force. It is not an easy task to repair an airfield in the face of aerial bombardment. What's more, Rokossovsky also left behind a lot of regular "partisans" to play hide and seek with the Germans.
All in all. Guderian's desire to get enough air support in a short period of time is absolutely wishful thinking. It was also time to give the German armored forces a taste of the absence of air cover.
When the German army was abused to death by the Red Air Force, Rokossovsky did not relax and nervously deployed in Bryansk. In his words: "The air force can only delay the enemy, but it cannot really stop the enemy." In order to hold Bryansk, the army must rush to repair the fortifications every second.
In this regard, Li Xiaofeng gave him a lot of help, deploying a large number of construction machinery to support the construction, and the total number of trench diggers, tractors and trucks was enough for thousands of vehicles. Earthworks were carried out around Bryansk day and night, and it is said that enough earth was dug up to fill the Kiev reservoir.
At the end of October, after a difficult march, Guderian's troops finally crossed the Russian border, which for Hitler deserved to be written about, because it meant that "the great German army had embarked on the final march to destroy the Bolsheviks", and Goebbels also trumpeted something: "Take Moscow, go home for Christmas." β
But only Guderian, who really set foot on Russian soil, knew how difficult this part of the road was for him. And the road ahead is probably far from easy, he wrote in his diary: "The resistance of the Russians is fierce. A large number of guerrillas are active in the vicinity of our army, and the slightest negligence will lead to death. The enemy's snipers, in particular, were so active that I had to send some of my troops to encircle them, but compared to these natives of Russia, my boys were unfamiliar with the terrain and always did more with less. β
Not only the partisans and snipers gave Guderian a headache, but the getting lower and lower temperatures also worried him: "The weather is getting colder and colder, and most of the soldiers are wearing autumn clothes, which are not at all able to withstand the cold winds of Russia, and many of the troops have begun to catch colds, which is really not a good sign!" β
The biggest headache for Guderian was the supply problem, the lines of communication were strangled to death by the Red Air Force, whether it was fuel, ammunition or food, the basic supply was not enough, and some troops had run out of cooking. Even if Guderian ordered the troops to go to the Russians to find a way, when the Red Army retreated, it took away a grain that could be hauled, and all that could not be pulled was burned on the spot. The Germans could only go to the Russian countryside to loot, and such an act did little to alleviate the food crisis except to create more partisans and resistance.
Finally, Guderian concluded worriedly: "The enemy has a planned retreat and a clear of the walls, which is no different from the tactics of the Russians in 1812, will our fate be better than that of Napoleon?" To tell you the truth, I don't know ......."
At the same time, the morale of the Red Army was high, Rokossovsky personally went to grasp the training and preparation of various units, and Li Xiaofeng provided a steady stream of sufficient supplies, and the Red Army soldiers could not wait to have a good contest with the Germans.
On October 29, Guderian's panzer group reached Vigonich with great difficulty against the first snow of the winter, and by this time Bryansk was already in sight, according to Hitler: "The collapse of the Russians is imminent, and the victory of Germany is only a matter of time!" β
But time turned out to be unfavorable for the Germans, and on the day they arrived in Vigonich, Guderian had half of his tanks lying in their nests, some running out of gasoline, and the other part frozen. Once again, he sent a telegram to Bock, urging him to be provided with plenty of fuel, food, and clothing for the winter, otherwise his troops would be frozen into popsicles!
Bock really couldn't help it, because it was too hard to keep the supply line open, not to mention Guderian's side, even the third tank group attacking Minsk, fuel and ammunition were intermittent, and Bock could only kick the ball up.
What is the situation in Germany at this time? In one word, it is to sing and dance, and the broad masses of the people do not have the slightest feeling of living in the war years, and live a happy and peaceful life.
This is no joke, Germany actually mobilized for war in World War II very late, and only began to carry out full mobilization in 1943, before a large amount of materials and resources were used to ensure the livelihood of civilians, that is, a lot of war resources were wasted.
On the other hand, the Soviet Union was fully mobilized early, the daily life of the common people was reduced to a minimum standard, and all factories and resources were used to ensure that the war was won.
There may be comrades who want to say, Hitler is having a convulsion, right? In fact, it is not crazy at all, the reason why the Nazis were able to gain a firm foothold in Germany is that a large number of social resources are inclined to the field of people's livelihood, before 1943, the German people (excluding Jews) lived quite well, compared with the Weimar Republic, that is heaven, and naturally the Nazi support rate will be so high.
What's more, Hitler himself probably never wanted to fight a world war on a full-scale scale, and his system was based on short-term quick victory in a blitzkrieg, that is, to defeat the opponent as quickly as possible, and then plunder resources from the opponent to fill the hole at home.
Who would have thought that the Soviet Union was neither Poland nor France, and it would not surrender even if it was beaten with a blue nose and swollen face, coupled with the assistance of the United States in history, it turned into a black hole that consumed Germany......
