Section XXVII: The Patriot League

In four days, the Chinese army distributed all kinds of weapons that could equip about five infantry divisions to the Russian armed forces in the prescribed proportion, of which the Ukrainian Peliula received one-third, and the rest was given to the men sent by Denikin. The armed forces of the Patriot Alliance, which had been given weapons, withdrew from Kiev one after another under the instructions of General Wang Mingyuan and began to assemble on the Kharkov-Kursk line, and the plan of Kornilov and Denikin was to go north to capture Oryol and Tula, and then to occupy Moscow. Among them, Tula is an important Russian arms base, and if Tula is captured, it can not only solve the source of arms, but also limit the development of the armed forces of the Cloth Party. According to the information from all quarters, the People's Commissar of Military Affairs of the Burenos Avodique Trotsky has successively formed the regular armed forces of nine armies, three of which have been sent in the direction of Moscow.

The overall strategy of the coalition forces to seize power was formulated with the help of the Chinese, the core was to seize Petersburg and Moscow, the two core cities controlled by the Cloth Party, but to put Moscow above Petersburg, the specific strategy was to attack from the south and east, and the northwest troops mainly played the role of threatening Petersburg, and then contained the forces of the Cloth Party. Van der Ping believed that as long as Moscow was seized and firmly controlled, Petersburg would be in a dead state and nothing could be done.

After completing the previous stage of work, Lieutenant General Van der Ping rushed back to Kiev from Omsk and reported to Wang Mingyuan in person on the situation of the Kolchak troops; under the effective work of General Artemyev, who was the chief of the General Staff of the Allied Army, most of the Russian troops in the Far East were subordinated to the Allied Army, and at present Kolchak's troops have been reorganized into 18 divisions, two-thirds of which are the Russian troops in the Far East that Artemyev commanded. A third were newly recruited peasants from Omsk, Irkutsk, etc. Only weapons and ammunition are insufficient. According to Beijing's instructions, Fan Deping transferred a batch of weapons from Wu Nian's 3rd Army and sold them to the Russians at a high price. Kolchak hopes to buy more firearms from China's army, and the caliber of bullets and artillery shells of the Chinese and Russian armies is basically the same, which is relatively convenient. The Russian army preferred the semi-automatic rifles and infantry assault guns of the Chinese army, but Kolchak had no more hard currency, and since the February 1917 revolution, the ruble has depreciated sharply, and is now almost a waste of paper, and Van der Ping demanded that the settlement be settled in gold or dollars, which stumped Kolchak. Nicholas II finally revealed a secret. Built yƬ Kolchak raided Kazan. There is a lot of gold hidden there. Nikolai proved that when the Germans approached Petersburg in 1915, in order to prevent the gold from falling into the hands of the German army, he personally ordered the transfer of all the gold ingots stored in the treasury to Kazan. That amount of gold has since been stored in Kazan untouched.

Not many people know about it. Kolchak was happy about this. With his new chief of staff, General Artemiev, a plan was drawn up for a surprise attack on Kazan from Omsk, which was approved by Van der Pin. Now that Van der Ping is the Emperor of Omsk, the assembly and movement of the troops of the Eastern Army of the Union Army must be approved by General Van der Ping. Because the railway lines and major highways were completely controlled by the 3rd Army of the Chinese Expeditionary Force, Kolchak's troops not only lacked weapons, but they also lacked transportation, winter clothing and even food, all of which were inseparable from the Chinese.

This is truly the sorrow of Russia. Kolchak did not like the Chinese in his bones, and always felt that they did not press the good intentions. But now there is no way, you must get help from the Chinese. Now it has entered the coldest season in Russia, the average temperature in Omsk has dropped below minus 30 °, and the march route of more than 1,300 kilometers cannot be relied on foot, but fortunately, the railway line is under the control of the Chinese, and the Allied Eastern Army can secretly assemble to Ufa under the cover of the Chinese army, and then storm Kazan to the north. Kolchak was an admiral and knew very little about land warfare, but according to General Artemyev's report, although the Eastern Army had formed 6 corps and 16 divisions, less than a third of the troops could really be used, and the rest either lacked weapons or were not well trained. Artemiev thus built Nicholas II and Kolchak to mobilize the Chinese army to join the expedition against Moscow! On the Omsk and Irkutsk fronts, the Chinese army gathered their 3rd Army and 3 armies, and the Chinese army stopped on the railway line and did not advance or retreat, especially in the situation where the Germans seized Poland and advanced into Ukraine, which was extremely incomprehensible.

For this, the core figures of the Patriot League had a secret conversation.

"They must be waiting for us to send out an invitation, can we talk to them?" Artemiev asked.

"Absolutely." Nicholas II immediately agreed, thinking about his relatives in prison, and although he had already sent a warning to Petersburg to the authorities of Petersburg to ensure the absolute safety of the Tsarist family, there was no reply. Nicholas II was very affectionate, and as long as he could bring his wife and children back to him safely, he was willing to do something.

"There is no such thing as a free lunch, so what if the Chinese put forward conditions that are difficult for us to accept?" Kolchak asked.

"We don't have the money right now, anyway. If you want money, you can only support us to eliminate the Cloth Party and take power, right? ā€

"I'm not talking about money, it's simple if they ask for money. In the process of forming the Patriot Union, the Chinese showed a side that worried me," Kolchak said gloomily, "what if they make territorial claims?" As far as I know, the dictator in Beijing is salivating over the territory of the Far East, and you have served in the Far East for a long time and dealt with them, what do you think? ā€

"There is a worrying tendency in the propaganda of history classes in Beijing. But Vladivostok is the result of centuries of struggle of our ancestors, and Russia must not abandon it. If they offer to return the so-called Primorsky Province that we seized with an 'unequal' treaty, then there is nothing to talk about......"

"What if it's something else? Like Ukraine under their occupation? ā€

"Well, Ukraine," Artemyev mused, "I don't think they have anything to think of Ukraine." First, the geographical location is not ideal, and secondly, the situation does not allow it, you know, the Germans have already invaded Ukraine, and Lviv has already been occupied by Germany. Although the Ukrainian independence movement instigated by Petliura and Hetman is supported by the Chinese, it cannot be assumed that the Chinese have any intentions against Ukraine. Perhaps they are trying to get the support of the Ukrainians. General Artemiev said, "Why don't I go and test it?" Anyway, not only can we not drive out the Chinese at the moment, but we also need their help, and we will talk after our victory. ā€

Kolchak agreed with Artemyev. The future Russian state system determined by the Patriot Union is a constitutional monarchy, which is the result of a multi-party compromise. However, they adopted the opinion of the Chinese, and did not rush to announce the formation of a central government to fight against Petersburg, but inherited the political legacy of the Tsar and the Provisional Government, that is, they were willing to fulfill the obligations of the Entente externally in order to completely defeat Germany, and internally united the patriotic people to completely defeat the Bolsheviks.

The political position of the Patriot League was unanimously appreciated by the Entente powers. Obviously, the Chinese are wiser in this regard. China's long history has long been proven. It is wise to "delay the reign of king", which can prevent internal power struggles and can be more conducive to uniting more allies. Sure enough, either Kornilov or Denikin. Or the general Yudenich, who was in a hurry to attack Petersburg. They agreed to negotiate in detail the rebuilding of Russia after the destruction of the Bolsheviks and the victory over Germany.

On the issue of the Union of Russian Patriots. China has benefited the most. The United States, Britain, France, and other countries greatly appreciate China's work in bringing about the establishment of the Russian Patriot Union, and all the economic and military aid originally planned to assist Russia was transferred to China, and China is responsible for implementing the aid to the Patriot Alliance.

Right now. General Artemiev formally presented his plan to Van der Pin. But it was flatly refused.

"The demand for the use of the 3rd Army to attack the Bruzza d'Armunes is beyond the President's authority, and our task is to fulfill our obligations under the Boston Accords and not to intervene in your country's civil war, even though we are justifiably and morally on your side. As for the question of the actions of the 3rd Army, which you raised, I can tell you that we have already received an order from Commander Wang that the 3rd Army will be engaged in operations in the Ukrainian direction. So, the railroad line that you asked for will not be freed up for your troops. This railway must meet the requirements of the 3rd Army before it can be handed over to you. ā€

Naturally, there is no need to consider Admiral Kolchak's concerns. The ball was kicked back to the side of the Russians, and without the help of the Chinese, the Eastern Army could not let go of the advance in the direction of Moscow, and the Southern Army, whether it was Kornilov or Denikin, the troops they were forming had to pass through the Chinese defense zone.

Kolchak could not sit still, so he sent Artemiev to Ukraine to meet with the commander of the Chinese Expeditionary Force, in order to obtain the permission of General Wang Mingyuan, "As long as the Chinese help us take Moscow and Petersburg, even if the Chinese are the messengers sent by Satan, I am willing to cooperate with him." ā€

On January 31, 1918, General Artemeyev, accompanied by Lieutenant General Van der Ping, took a train to Kiev, where the headquarters of the Chinese Expeditionary Force was located. Apparently, the actions of the Southern Army of the Union had already begun, which put pressure on him, since the main forces of the Eastern Army remained in the Omsk area.

Artemiev felt the pre-war tensions in the air of Kyiv, the city under martial law, full of Chinese soldiers patrolling in trucks or military SUVs, and the streets were inhabited by few but orderly people, showing a kind of serenity in a state of war.

"I'm sorry, but the big battle between our army and the Germans is raging, and the commander is very short of time, and the scheduled meeting time is set for ten o'clock in the evening." Fan Deping said to General Artemyev, who was anxiously waiting, after meeting Wang Mingyuan.

"How's the situation at the front?" Artemiev asked with concern.

"The Germans have occupied Vinnitsa, and our army is plotting a counterattack."

Artemiev was taken aback, Vinnytsia is a very important strategic point, a transport hub in southwestern Ukraine, Chinese it turned out to be lost......

There are more situations that Fan Deping does not want to talk about, or he does not know. Staying up until the evening, Artemiev was received by Van der Ping to the headquarters of the expeditionary forces.

"Old friend, you are in a hurry to come to Kyiv to see me, what is the urgency?" Wang Mingyuan got straight to the point, "I don't have more time, you already know that we are fighting fiercely with the Germans, and if this battle is not fought well, it will be difficult for Kyiv to keep it." ā€

If Ukraine is lost, the rear road of the Southern Army will be cut off, Artemiev did not expect the situation to become so serious, "For God's sake, we must not lose Ukraine!" ā€

"It is our responsibility to deal with the Germans, and besides, you have to believe in the strength of our army. Your Excellency, General, you should say what you ask, the commander's time is precious. Van der Ping interrupted Artemyev.

Artemiev then reported to Wang Mingyuan on the battle plan of the Eastern Army of the Alliance, and proposed that the 3rd Army should act side by side with the Eastern Army, and at least allow the Eastern Army to use the railway.

Wang Mingyuan knocked on the table rhythmically, staring at a certain point on the wall, and did not speak for a long time.

"The Southern Army is marching north, and they need the cooperation of the Eastern Army. According to intelligence, Trotsky was moving his Red Army to the south, and if the Eastern Army took Kazan and crossed the Volga, it would occupy Moscow in one fell swoop and cut off the rear route of the main forces of the Cloth Party......"

"There is no need to talk about military issues, I am thinking about political issues. Then we will intervene in the civil war in your country. Earlier, Petersburg had sent a contact with us and forwarded a personal letter from Mr. Ulyanov, in which he did not want our troops to intervene in the internal affairs of your country and promised to return to China the territories of the Far East, including Vladivostok, which belonged to China after the end of the war. Dear General Artemyev, although we are old friends and share a common opinion on international affairs, what would you do if you were in my place? ā€

"Don't believe the nonsense of the Bolsheviks! Those Jews were incorruptible and unfaithful! When they have the strength to speak, they won't admit anything! ā€

"China has faithfully fulfilled its obligations, and has been appreciated by the other countries of the Entente, countless Chinese officers and soldiers have stained the battlefield with blood for the interests of Russia, it is okay to support you, I am emotionally so, and even more so in deeds! With weapons alone, I equipped five divisions of the Alliance! But what about your commitment? One more question, you came to Kyiv, can you represent the Union? ā€

"Yes, I can represent the ...... of the Alliance"

"That's easy. I do not have more time to dwell on our cooperation with you, and I have given carte blanche to my Chief of Staff, General Van der Ping, on this matter, and I can do so on behalf of my Government. Well, you can talk to General Fan, and if the interests of our country are met, we can help you. (To be continued......)
