Chapter 23: Ambush
The reason why the time was set at 7 p.m...... That's because it was the time when the Soviet and government troops were returning to the camp to rest after completing their day's tasks. At this time, after a whole day of chasing the guerrillas, they were afraid that they were exhausted, and perhaps they had not even had time to replenish the ammunition and fuel of the tanks and armored vehicles.
And for us...... It was just the beginning of a long night, and we had a full night to escape from the Soviet army while we were on mission.
Of course...... At this time, the helicopters and reconnaissance planes of the Soviet army had already returned to the city...... There is no airport outside Kabul, so helicopters and other expensive things must return to Kabul after completing their mission to avoid being attacked by guerrillas.
Just like we can see...... Helicopter after helicopter flew back to Kabul from all directions like bees returning to their nests.
That's not a good thing for us...... The reason is that I know very well that these MiG-24s, known as "Hinds", are the first helicopter gunships equipped by the Soviet Union, and the armament on them is not something that most of us, the infantry armed with light weapons, can deal with.
But I know a little from Ragil...... The current MiG-24 does not have much night combat capability, I don't know whether it is not equipped with night vision devices or the night vision devices of this era are not advanced enough to accurately identify ground forces in the air, in short, the MiG-24 night combat in the Soviet Union at this time still relies on spotlights to irradiate the ground......
If that's the case, then it's much more reassuring...... The spotlight is directed at the ground, which is obviously lethal for a helicopter, and on the one hand, its search ability is not strong. Especially in this mountainous area full of stones...... No matter how strong the light of the spotlight is, it cannot penetrate the stone. On the other hand, it will expose itself...... To search in the spotlight you have to fly low. Plus there's a headlight on overhead. And the speed is not fast when searching at low altitudes...... As a result, it is easy to become a target for weapons such as machine guns and rocket launchers.
That's why I dared to attack Kabul in this situation.
It gets dark at six o'clock...... Taking advantage of this time, we secretly moved to the side of the road from Kandahar to Kabul under the leadership of Hassan and his party.
Kandahar and Kabul are the two largest cities in Afghanistan, with a total of 389 kilometres of roads between them...... The road is not only long but also quite dangerous, not only because of its poor condition, but also because of the fact that the neighborhood is full of mountainous areas where the guerrillas can hide.
And because this road was extremely important for the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan...... Soviet military supplies had to be transported by road to Kandahar, and from there to the fronts...... In other words, Kandahar was another transit point for the Soviet Union against the Afghan guerrillas...... Kandahar and Kabul are facing the entire long Pakistan-Afghanistan border in the south and north, and even Kandahar's military position is more important than Kabul, because it is on the other side of the long Iran-Pakistan border.
As a result, this highway has become a veritable "Yellow Springs Road...... Afghan guerrillas frequently set up ambushes in this mountainous area. Destruction, looting, interception, etc., made the main goal of the Soviet army's sweep to eliminate the guerrillas between the two major cities of Kakan in order to ensure the safety of this important supply line.
From this point of view...... It is true that the Soviet army had little experience in guerrilla warfare.
Guerrillas this thing...... Therefore, the best way to deal with guerrilla warfare is not to sweep up, but to use guerrilla warfare to deal with guerrilla warfare......
Just like we did with Vietnam in the self-defense counterattack, the first thing is to open a net, like dividing the map into grids, and then divide the troops into pieces and disperse into the mountains to destroy the enemy in the small grid in which we are responsible!
Therefore, we can succeed in dealing with the Vietnamese army, which is also fighting guerrillas, on the battlefield in Vietnam, while the Soviet army does not dare to enter the mountains with small units to clear the situation because of the limitations of its own troops...... This determines that they will never be able to achieve much in the fight against guerrillas.
None of this is my concern, though.
What I want to care about is...... The troops of the Soviet Union were used to clear the Kakan road. So when Kabul is in danger...... They must have come back from this road as well. So early in the day, when we made Jihua, we set our goal on the Kakan Highway...... The same is true of the information we should receive today...... On this side of the Kakan road, Kabul sent a total of one division of Soviet troops and two divisions of Afghan government troops.
At the forefront were several guerrillas and a platoon of agents of Li Zuolong...... Needless to say, their role is to clear the enemy's open and dark posts for our main forces along the way......
These sentinels have long been under our watch...... The reason is that we sent snipers early in the morning to monitor the nearby terrain. On the other hand, it is because some of the sentinels are served by Afghan government forces...... They are actually puppet armies. So the enthusiasm can be imagined, the so-called "dark whistle" also has a way to get out and smoke and chat with the "bright whistle", so within a few hours the nearby outpost is all under our control.
Then when it gets dark, it's time for Li Zuolong to show his skills...... I don't know if it's because Li Zuolong, the platoon commander, taught me or what, all the soldiers under his platoon have a little bit of hard work, so there is no need to say it...... A few groups touched the sentinels in three or two strokes, and the sentinels were touched.
When they are done, ask the guerrillas to change their uniforms...... It became a sentry of the government army!
Then our main forces touched it...... At this time, our troops had been divided into two parts, one part was composed of staff officers, instructors, guard squads, and a few Dan Ren Xiang guides, who left the war zone with mules and some baggage, and occupied the commanding heights on the retreat route to cover our retreat.
The other part, of course, is our main force...... There were more than 200 of us in all, and we went to the high ground on both sides of the road...... Each high ground was divided into a platoon or so, that is, twenty or thirty people, so six or seven high places were occupied on both sides of the road, and a section of road several miles long was blocked with the layout of "beheading, cutting off, and hitting the middle."
Then several soldiers of the special agent company deployed several anti-tank mines on the road as fast as they could, and then got a directional explosive made of explosive packs and electrical wires, and an ambush was set up......
It only took a little more than a dozen minutes, including cleaning up the sentries...... This couldn't help but make Hassan stunned, he leaned next to me and said, "Battalion Commander Yang...... Do you do this all the time, as if everyone knows what they are doing? ”
"Aren't you?" I couldn't help but feel a little strange when I heard this.
Fighting...... It is to complete the task with the highest efficiency, so of course each task will be assigned in advance, and the time must be shortened as much as possible through strict coordination, and even rehearsed several times in advance to coordinate the actions of each detachment...... For example, the coordination between the sniper and the sentinel warrior, such as laying mines and other fighters to occupy the high ground at the same time, etc. It's just that our soldiers have rich combat experience and strict training, so they don't need pre-war drills to achieve a considerable degree of coordination, so it's easy and fast at this time.
"This ......" Hassan touched his head a little embarrassedly and replied, "If we let us do these things...... I'm afraid that it's already a mess at this time, and everyone is in a hurry and doesn't know what to do! ”
I just smiled and comforted, "It's okay...... Take your time, and it will come over time! ”
In fact, this is also a characteristic of guerrilla warfare in Afghanistan...... The quality of individual soldiers seems to be good, but there is a lack of coordination and cooperation.
But that's normal, otherwise...... It is unlikely that so many guerrilla groups in Afghanistan will not unite and unite with the outside world when a strong enemy invades.
"The second company is ready!"
"Triple ready!"
"Five companies are ready!"
……
One report after another came to me, so I knew that everything was ready and only the east wind was owed.
I looked at my watch, and there were still more than twenty minutes before the scheduled start time...... It seems that we have given ourselves a little too long to prepare.
"Battalion commander!" At this time, Company Commander Luo reported: "The enemy situation has been discovered...... It's a couple of cars! ”
"What?" I couldn't help but be taken aback when I heard this...... A couple of cars, we just planted a couple of anti-tank mines on the road, and as soon as this car comes in......
"How far is it?" I asked, "Will there be enough time for demining?" ”
"Five minutes!" Company Commander Luo replied: "These cars are driving fast, and I'm afraid it's too late for mine clearance!" ”
I couldn't help frowning when I heard this...... I didn't expect to kill such a Cheng biting gold halfway, if this is the first fight...... I'm afraid that our results are only these few cars.
Then I thought about it and asked, "Is it the government army or the Soviet ......army?"
"Looks like it's government troops!" Company Commander Luo replied: "Three cars, no armored car escort...... Maybe it's the government troops who deserted back to the city! ”
I agree with Company Commander Luo's statement...... At this time, the morale of the government troops was very poor, and they were still used as cannon fodder by the Soviet troops during the sweep...... In addition, their station may not be far from Kabul, so they deserted back to the city for the night.
"Let the sentinels go down!" I immediately ordered: "Just say that you have found a mine, and plant a few small flags where there are mines......"
"Hmm!" Company Commander Luo couldn't help but be stunned, but he quickly understood, and immediately conveyed the order.
Of course, there is also a translation to be done...... Then the Afghans, pretending to be government sentries, rushed down and, with the help of the fighters, planted small flags on the mines...... (To be continued......)
