124. Artillery sighting radar
Although it was a pity that I was not able to participate in this operation, I was able to easily learn about the process and details of the whole battle in the command in Kent, and it is not an exaggeration to say that I was personally involved in it, because some of the steps were decided in consultation with Lieutenant Colonel Kent.
For example, the question of how the SAS maneuvered to Pebriel Island is not an easy one......
Originally, we thought that it would be very simple, and the helicopter would fly directly to Pebul Island with a few teams of people to carry the airdrop, but this is not the case.
The first is the problem of a large number of radar stations on the island of Pebre, knowing that the Argentines have a total of six radar stations on this island.
The purpose of Argentina's six radar stations on the 88-square-kilometer island was obvious, so that if the British were to land at San Carlos, the six radar stations would be able to observe the British fleet or aircraft on the sea from afar, and the attack aircraft on the island would respond accordingly and alert the Argentine forces in the port of San Carlos.
In other words, SAS helicopters are likely to be detected by radars on the island, and SAS's operational intentions will be revealed.
It is not difficult to solve this problem, which is to have the helicopter cross the entire Falklands from the other side of the Falklands and approach the island of Pebul from the backside.
We believe that the six radar stations on Pebul Island are all focused on monitoring in the direction of the sea...... The British were a task force, and they didn't have to think about it, so they never dreamed that the enemy would approach them from the Falklands side. In addition, there are Argentina's own transport aircraft, helicopters and attack aircraft on the Falklands, so even if the radar station detects the SAS helicopters, there will be no suspicions.
The second is the security of the airdrop.
We don't know which places on Pebul Island are safe...... This task could not be accomplished with reconnaissance aircraft, partly because reconnaissance aircraft did not work well at night. On the other hand, it is because the reconnaissance aircraft cannot detect dangers such as minefields or hidden posts lurking in the snow.
This raises a problem. What if the main force of the SAS is airborne or airborne, but finds itself in a minefield, in an enemy encirclement, or just airborne and discovered by the enemy?
There is no better way. The only way to do this is to send an advance force to reconnoiter and open up a suitable landing site.
The advance force was a team of eight led by Angus who would travel by helicopter to Pebull Island. And in order not to expose their targets, they first landed on the west main island of the Falklands, and then took a rubber boat to Pable Island.
Pebul Island is separated from the Falklands West Island by a strait 700 meters wide, which does not seem to be a difficult task for them.
But it was this seemingly inconsistency that stumped the advance team...... When they reached the edge of the strait and were about to cross the river, the weather suddenly changed and a strong wind blew, and the wind and waves in the strait suddenly surged, and the rubber boat had no way to resist these wind and waves. As a result, the operation had to be suspended, and the eight advance team members could only hide in a rock cave by the sea and wait for their opportunity.
This was undoubtedly a test for the advance troops, who had to wait patiently in the cave for a day and a night, until the next night when it was dark before they could move again.
Of course, if the wind and waves are not suitable for crossing the river the next day, then the operation will be delayed.
On the surface, this delay may not seem like a big deal, but I know that it is not easy when I have been lurking on the battlefields of Vietnam, because the place where they are lurking is the Falklands, the territory of the Argentines...... Especially on the seaside, Argentine soldiers tried to prevent the infiltration of British scouts. Troops and even helicopters are often sent to patrol and search the seashore.
So it goes without saying that these SAS players hiding in the cave will starve and freeze, in case Argentina finds any clues...... Then it can be said that no one can save them.
"Angus has a very good military command and command ability!" Lieutenant Colonel Kent handed me a cup of coffee. He said, "So I believe he can do this task well, but he doesn't seem to have much capacity!" ”
Lieutenant Colonel Kent smiled and continued, "For example, he never admits losing to you!" ”
"As Angus said!" I said, "We're more by luck!" ”
"No, no! The battlefield never needs luck! Kent replied: "We don't believe in luck either, we only believe in the plain zhì, the equipment, the coordination of all aspects, and careful planning!" ”
It should be said that Kent's statement is correct, because if it is only luck, then the SAS troops are afraid that nine times out of ten, they will not survive until now.
"Colonel! I want to tell you good news! Kent continued: "I have just spoken to Brigadier General Clapp on the phone, and I know from him that the British government, in order to show its gratitude to you, seems to be intent on providing you with some much-needed weapons or military technology!" ”
"Is this true?" I couldn't help but get up from my chair.
You have to know what China lacks most at this time, what it lacks most is weapons and technology, and now Britain will help us...... That's a lot of work.
But then again, the British are also beneficial to themselves by providing us with this help, such as the economic benefits of selling weapons or technology, and the indirect benefits of the confrontation with the Soviet Union, so they are just taking advantage of this time to do a good thing.
"It's not sure yet, but I think there's a good chance it's true!" Lieutenant Colonel Kent said: "After all, you can almost be said to have given us an extremely important, if not decisive, construction in our most difficult times. We can't imagine what this battle would have ended up without those of yours! Therefore, it is also appropriate to provide your country with some equipment and military technology, and at the same time, it is also what we should do as allies! ”
"Great!" I couldn't help but be overjoyed.
You must know that after such a long time of battlefield training, I have already practiced the kung fu of Mount Tai collapsing in front of me without changing my face, but now I can't be calm.
"So Brigadier General Clapp wants you to think about what kind of equipment you need, I'll build it personally......" Kent spread his hands around: "You may be able to form a special forces, I think this is quite tempting for you!" ”
I have to say that things are indeed like what Lieutenant Colonel Kent said, although we actually have a special forces, we often feel that the equipment is not enough, such as helicopters, and laser equipment, etc.
But when I thought about it, I felt that these things were not urgently needed by our army, such as helicopters...... The air force is rarely used on the battlefield in Vietnam, and our direct five reforms are enough, and even the Vietnamese side still uses old American helicopters from the United States and Vietnam, which basically will not pose any threat to us.
Besides, if we want a helicopter, we should also ask the Yankees, and the Yankees' Black Hawk is much better than the British's Bobcat.
So what can the British give us?
What do our troops urgently need?!
If you want to say that this person is in a hurry, his head is blank, and when he fights, he clearly knows that this is lacking and that is lacking, but now he can put forward conditions but he can't think of anything.
"The Colonel can think slowly!" Kent looked at me and couldn't help but smile, "We just want to know what you need, so we can be prepared......"
At this time, I couldn't help but have a flash of inspiration, and said: "Artillery sighting radar!" ”
"Huh? Gunsight radar? Hearing this, Kent's eyes couldn't help but flash a hint of strangeness: "Colonel, don't you want equipment related to special forces?" ”
"No!" I shook my head: "It's the artillery sighting radar, if what I say counts!" ”
"Of course it counts!" Kent replied, "A large part of the reason we are willing to provide equipment is to thank you for your construction!" ”
"Then aim at the radar!" Again, I answered in the affirmative.
The reason why I made this decision is because I clearly know the significance of artillery sighting radar to our army.
You must know that the main battle on the Sino-Vietnamese border at this time was an artillery battle...... The air force did not participate in the war, and there was a stalemate in ground operations, so the two sides only used artillery to come and go.
In this era, although our army had powerful artillery, the way it adopted was to manually calculate the coordinates, that is, to occupy the commanding heights and establish an artillery observation station, and then condescendingly calculate the coordinates and guide the artillery fire to bombard.
This method of artillery warfare is undoubtedly very backward and extremely inefficient, and it would be completely different if there was an artillery sighting radar...... It is said that this thing can calculate the position of the enemy's artillery position when the enemy's shell has just hit the barrel, so the enemy's second shell has not yet fired, and the shell that we returned fire has already covered the enemy's artillery position.
There is no doubt that this will give our artillery an absolute advantage.
Of course, Britain did sell artillery sighting radars to our country in history, but that was a few years later.
If we can advance the time for our country to equip artillery aiming radar by a few years, then I don't know how many soldiers' lives can be saved and how much advantage our army can bring to operations.
"Hmm!" Lieutenant Colonel Kent thought about it and nodded and said, "I will report your meaning to the general truthfully, but in the end, it is not up to me to decide whether it can be realized or not!" ”
"Understood!" I nodded.
"Lieutenant Colonel!" At this time, the communicator with headphones on his head reported to us: "The second lieutenant reports that the wind in the strait has weakened but the waves are not small, and the second lieutenant intends to take the risk of crossing the river!" ”
"Hmm!" Lieutenant Colonel Kent and I stood up and walked to the command room.
The battle for the radar station and airfield on Pebul Island will soon begin. (To be continued......)
