Chapter 16 The Destruction of Life

Seya was indeed taught a lesson. In a large bunker, Seya collapses in a dark corner in despair. The chief of staff and the adjutant were afraid that the suicide of a Japanese major general brigade commander had stimulated world public opinion, and they came to Seya's side in sincere fear. I found a pool of blood from the corner of my mouth to my side, and I almost didn't scream.

"General, you, wounded?" The chief of staff asked in surprise.

I saw Seya move his body, stand up slightly against the stake, and only after a while did he say: "It is not so easy for the bullet skin of the Shina army to hit a big Japanese general. But, I admit, I was hurt, and it was serious! Suddenly, he stared at the chief of staff and said, "You, I want you, stay!" Take back the lost ground! He frantically grabbed the other party's neckline: "Grab ......"

Because the enemy has increased the strength of the attack, the battle between Tengxian and Tangtou is even more fierce, and the battle situation in Linyi is tight. Xu Zuyi instructed Pang Bingxun on the phone: "Commander Pang, according to the development of the situation, the former commander has decided to study and decide: You should go to join Wang Mingzhang, the acting commander of the 41st Army!" ……”

When the flames were burning, Xu Zuyi sent another telegram ordering Zhang Zizhong's troops of the 59th Army to reinforce Linyi. At that time, Zhang Zizhong's troops were attacking the enemy on the front line of Jining and Yanzhou in Tengxian County, and after receiving the order, they immediately marched at a rapid pace and arrived on the west bank of the Yi River in the northern suburbs of Linyi on the 12th.

After Zhang Zizhong arrived, Pang Bingxun asked the 59th Army to take over the city defense. Zhang Zizhong believed that instead of passive defense, it was better to attack and defend, and hit the enemy's flank and back to relieve the siege of Linyi. As a result, Zhang Zizhong's suggestion was adopted.

At midnight on 13 March, the 59th Army moved to the line of Liujiahu, Yatou, and Shijiatun and forcibly crossed the Yi River.

At dawn on the 14th, Zhang Zizhong commanded the troops to launch an attack on the Japanese invaders. Liu Zhensan's 180th Division crossed the Yi River from Zhuge City and Xiaojiangzhuang to attack the Japanese troops near Xujiatai and Dataiping, and encountered stubborn resistance from a Japanese army at Tingzitou; Huang Weigang's 38th Division crossed the Yi River from Zhujiapeng and Chuanliu to capture Zhangjiazhuang, Jiejiazhuang, and Baita.

Due to the desperate counterattack of the little devils under the cover of 650 aircraft, artillery, and tanks, the division was forced to retreat to the west bank of the Yi River.

At the same time, the 39th Division of the 40th Army of Pang Bingxun's division on the east bank of the Yi River also started a counterattack from the front, and attacked the areas around Qingdun Temple and Youjiazhuang, and occupied Dongxiwangzhuang and Dongxishazhuang on the evening of 14 July.

On the morning of the 15th, Pang Bingxun's troops continued to move forward, occupying Zhengzhaizi, Huangjiatun, Dongxi Shenzhuang, and Liuhangtou, and at the same time sent cavalry to detour from the right flank to the line of Dongjiaguanzhuang and Goutou. On the same day, the 180th Division conquered Tingzitou, the Japanese army retreated to the east and west of Shuihuya, and the 38th Division crossed the Yi River again and occupied Shaling.

Then, the little devil added a brigade of more than 4,000 people to cross the river from Tangfang Yaxi to attack the position of Zhang Zizhong's troops on the west bank of the Yi River, and 18 enemy planes also bombed in turn, and the 38th Division suffered heavy casualties, but the officers and men still held their positions.

From 10 o'clock on the night of the same day to the early morning of the 17th, the little devils attacked the Yatou, Liujiahu, and Chaye Mountain positions with all their might, and after being destroyed by intensive artillery fire, the Japanese occupied these three positions. Zhang Zizhong urgently ordered two brigades to reinforce, resisted hard, fought many hand-to-hand battles, and finally recaptured all the lost positions, and most of the little devils were annihilated.

On the same day, Pang Bingxun's troops also launched a powerful offensive, fighting fiercely for a day and night, successively occupying Youjiazhuang, Fujiatun, Dongxishuihuya, and Shahe. By the morning of the 18th, the armies of Pang and Zhang attacked the enemy on the front line of Tangtou, Fujiachi, and Caopo from the east, south, and west, and after three days of bloody fighting, about three wings of the enemy on the Linyi side were completely annihilated, and most of the remnants of the enemy fled to Juxian, and one retreated to the north.

In this battle, the armies of Zhang and Pang destroyed more than 4,000 enemies, of which the 59th Army destroyed more than 3,000 enemies. More than 160 carloads of corpses were transported back to Juxian by trucks, and 800 corpses that had been repeatedly incinerated in Tangtou and Gegou were not brought back for burial on the spot. The Chinese army also paid a heavy price for the victory.

Unwilling to accept the defeat in the Battle of Linyi, the Japanese resent reinforcements of more than 4,000 troops on 20 March, and launched a counterattack on the Pang army's position together with the remnants of the enemy in Juxian and Tangtou.

On the 24th, enemy planes bombed the Pang army's position, and nine enemy guns bombed day and night. Due to the heavy casualties of Zhang Zizhong's division of the 59th Army, except for leaving one brigade to assist Pang Bingxun's division in guarding Linyi, the main force left Linyi on the 19th and turned to Feixian to rest and recuperate, preparing to move to Surabaya and Tengxian.

Under the attack of the enemy's strong forces, Pang's army was unable to fight and was forced to retreat to the east of the city to defend in Taoyuan and Huangshan, and the situation in Linyi became critical. In order to ensure Linyi and relieve the siege of the Pang army, Zhang Zizhong's troops returned to Linyi on the 25th to reinforce, fought fierce battles with the enemy in Weijiatun, Taoyuan and other places, and crossed the Yi River to the east and occupied Taoyuan.

On March 26, more than 1,000 little devils, under the cover of 18 cannons, made a detour to the area of Fengyitang in Linyi West, waiting for an opportunity to attack the city. Zhang Zizhong hurriedly sent heavy troops to deploy defenses on the line from Niangniang Temple to Daling in the west of the city to stop the enemy's attack. However, Zhang Zizhong's troops, who attacked Sanguanmiao, stopped attacking due to heavy losses.

The little devils took the opportunity to occupy Yingzi, Qianyizhuang, Shabuzhuang and other villages. At this time, Pang Bingxun's troops had lost their combat effectiveness due to excessive losses in troops, and although they were holding the line of Jiuqudian, Xiaolijiazhuang, Shubuling, and Huangshan, the position in Hedong was difficult to support, and Linyi was in danger.

On 27 March, the first part of the Little Devils launched an attack on the ancient city of Nansha Buzhuang, Xiaoling, and Beidao from 7 a.m., while the other part moved south from Mengyin and attacked Zhuchen Town southwest of Linyi.

On the 28th, the enemy increased by more than 1,000 men and 123 artillery pieces, and cooperated with planes to bomb the city of Linyi in turn. Pang Jun led Liu Fusheng's 231st Regiment with Cui Yuhai, deputy commander of the 116th Brigade of the 39th Division, and Zhang Liyuan's security regiment to defend the city, while the rest retreated to the south of the city, and the military headquarters was also transferred to the line from Jiuqu to Huangshan; Zhang Zizhong's division of the 59th Army built positions in the areas of Qide, Qilitun and Gangtou before and after, and engaged in a bloody battle with the enemy, killing more than 100 enemy soldiers.

By 29 March, under the fierce attack of the Japanese army, Linyi was already in a critical situation.

The Fifth Theater dispatched the Wang Zhaozhi Brigade of the Miao Chengliu Division of the 57th Army in Haizhou to Linyi for reinforcements. The unit arrived at Donggaodu on the morning of the 29th, and at 7 o'clock that night it marched to Shilipu, northwest of Linyi, and attacked in the direction of Da and Xiaoling.

At this time, the cavalry regiment of Tang Enbo's army also arrived to reinforce it, and in the afternoon it arrived at Huziyu in the west of the city and launched an attack on the area north of Yitang. The enemy suffered more than 1,000 casualties and was forced to retreat to Tangtou. At ten o'clock in the evening, the 59th Army attacked again, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy and forcing the enemy to retreat north.

Wang Zhaozhi's brigade pursued along the Yi River, and Tang Enbo's cavalry regiment pursued in the area of Aishan and Yitang, launching a full-scale counteroffensive. On the evening of the same day, because Linyi could not be attacked for a long time, and Taierzhuang was again in a bitter battle, the little devil then shifted the direction of the attack, ordered the Japanese army in Linyi to stop the attack, and drew out two infantry wings and one field artillery wing of the main force of the Sakamoto Brigade to go south at night and rush to Taierzhuang to support, leaving only one infantry wing and a small number of artillery to confront Zhang and Pang armies in Linyi.

So far, the casualties of the 59th Army have also reached more than 10,000. On April 21, due to the tight battle of Taierzhuang, the Zhang and Pang armies withdrew one after another, and Linyi was occupied by the Japanese army.

In the Battle of Linyi, all the officers and men of the 40th Army and the 59th Army fought side by side in bloody battles, creating a glorious record of killing and wounding more than 6,000 Japanese invaders, thwarting the Japanese army's plan to attack Taierzhuang from the Jinpu Road and Linyi Road, and laying the foundation for the victory of the Taierzhuang Campaign.

However, after Zhang Zizhong's army was transferred to Linyi, the 10th Division of the Little Devils immediately launched a fierce attack on the 22nd Group Army with the Seya Mixed Brigade. Due to the disparity in equipment, and the fact that the Tang Enbo Corps did not have time to reinforce, and soon moved to the Yishan area in the northeast of Linxian County and retreated to the canal defense line, the Sichuan army suffered heavy casualties.

Wang Mingzhang, commander-in-chief of the field, acting commander of the 41st Army and commander of the 122nd Division, Zhao Weibin, chief of staff of the 122nd Division, and Zou Shaomeng, chief of staff of the 124th Division, were all killed, and more than half of the entire 41st Army suffered casualties.

However, the little devil never expected that the Sichuan army, which was so poorly equipped, would not be able to attack it for a long time.

In particular, in the small city of Tengxian, although the opposing side was a few guard companies of the 41st Army (using pistols) and a small part of the 122nd Division, plus a local security force of several hundred men, the little devils fought from 14 March to 17 March. And until the 18th, there were still sporadic battles in Tengxian County. The Japanese army also consumed a lot of ammunition to be used to attack Xuzhou.

The main reason why the Japanese army was able to conquer Tengxian on the afternoon of the 17th was that in addition to the disparity in equipment and strength of the defending army and the untimely reinforcement of the Tang Enbo Corps, there was a more important reason that has been ignored by many historical theories.

That is, when the little devil saw that the Sichuan army in Tengxian County resisted stubbornly and the vanguard of Tang Enbo's reinforcements appeared, he quickly adjusted his strategy and tactics, bypassed Teng County in a roundabout way, and suddenly attacked the Nansha River defense line and Guanqiao defense line between Teng County and Lincheng, defeated Tang Enbo's reinforcements and the vanguard main force, and captured Lincheng before Tang Enbo.

In this battle to defend Linyi, the enemy suffered more than 12,000 casualties, of which more than 5,000 were wiped out by our Chinese army. However, the casualties of our Chinese army amounted to as many as 20,000, and in any case, the Chinese army still fought at a high level in Linyi.
