Chapter 36: The Mamba Classroom
This game is full of gimmicks, and a lot of people are looking forward to the confrontation between No. 4 show Stephen Marbury and No. 13 show Kobe Bryant.
Jerry West once said in front of the media that even if the Lakers have the top pick, they will choose Kobe Bryant, who once wanted to get a higher pick, lest Kobe be selected by other teams, but unfortunately the team did not get a better sign.
One wonders if the New York Sons are stronger, or if Kobe Bryant deserves a top pick.
Stephen Marbury, 1.88m tall, 82KG weight. Born in '77, he is just 19 years old this year, only one year older than Kobe.
Marbury's height, reach, strength, speed, and bounce are far from Kobe's. Kobe Bryant wants to block such a player, and there is a way.
On the offensive end, Kobe gave the ball to O'Neal to deal with, and after dribbling through the half, he stuffed the ball straight to the basket, and Marbury had no way to effectively interfere with Kobe's dribbling and organization.
"Sure enough, he has me as the boss in his heart." O'Neal couldn't help but sigh when he saw Kobe Bryant dutifully passing the ball to him, and he was a little worried that like in the last game, Kobe Bryant directly took over the team's offense.
O'Neal pushed past the Timberwolves center and threw a shot in front of Kevin Garnett's pinch shot. O'Neal glared at Garnett, who actually wanted to help defend me secretly, but fortunately reacted and dodged in time.
Marbury holds the ball, and Bryant continues to stick up. Marbury didn't dare to dribble more this time and threw the ball to Garnett, who was receiving from the middle line. Garnett gave the ball to unguarded Tom Gugliotta, and the big shooter hit an open three-pointer.
"This damn Cebaros." Harris has been completely disappointed in Ceballos, this guy is a piece of mud. It seems that West's proposal is indeed worth considering.
Bryant struggled to get the ball straight out of a diminutive Marbury, but he had a way of keeping Marbury out of an offensive opportunity. With close pressing defense, Marbury had no way to control the ball under Kobe's strong confrontation, let alone organize the team's offense.
Marbury could only quickly get the ball to his teammates and play off the ball himself. Marbury's off-ball ability was terrible, and Bryant kept up with his movement with ease.
When did Marbury, who was having a good time in New York, suffer this kind of grievance, he was completely a spectator on the offensive end. He was in a hurry, and he caught the ball regardless of forcing a mid-range dry pull-out jumper.
"Smack!" Kobe Bryant, who had already been stuck in his position, took to the air and delivered Marbury a solid hot pot.
Eddie Jones picked up the rolling basketball and rushed to the Timberwolves halfcourt with a dashing split dunk.
The fans of the Great Western Forum are boiling again, who was the last player who could contribute such a wonderful performance on the defensive end? Bryant has always been able to set the Great Western Forum Arena on fire with his brilliant performances.
"In this game, you won't get a point in front of me." Bryant said to Marbury. He's going to teach Marbury the importance of defense and show him that defense can dominate the game. The talented guard has a lot of potential, and Bryant wants to teach him a lesson and hopefully grow more in the future.
"Damn." Marbury's dark face couldn't see the change in complexion, but his heart fluctuated, if he said that he would not be depressed if he lost to the league's famous superstar, but being looked at by this 13th pick kid, Marbury really couldn't accept it.
Kevin Garnett hurriedly stepped forward to pick up Marbury, who had fallen to the ground, hoping that the No. 3 pick would be his right-hand man. But Marbury's poor performance in front of Kobe Bryant, who is also a rookie this year, can't help but be a little skeptical, can he play his second role?
The Timberwolves took a timeout, and Wolves coach Philip Saunders opted to replace Marbury, who was suppressed by Kobe.
"Oh, it looks like the Timberwolves' No. 4 pick was repaired badly by our No. 13 pick."
"With Kobe's offensive and defensive performance, it will not be a rookie in the same class soon."
Bryant faced Terry Porter, a veteran with a wealth of experience, a height of 1.91 meters and excellent confrontation ability, which also made Bryant's common-sense pressing futile. Bryant didn't force the ball, tried it, and after finding that the point guard's fundamentals were very solid, he returned to his normal defensive strategy.
The Timberwolves' Tom Gugliotta is hot and has a decent momentum on the offensive end. Bryant and the 2.08-meter forward were not in high position, and could only watch as Zabaros defended with the eyes of Tom Gugliotta.
On the Lakers' side, O'Neal was brave under Kobe's feeding, and the immature Garnett couldn't interfere with him too much. With O'Neill's brave play, the two teams played back and forth.
The situation changed after the bench came on, and the Lakers led by Kobe Bryant broke down the Wolves bench again. Stephen Marbury, who played again, had a problem with his mentality, he could have guaranteed no mistakes, but after losing the assistance of Kevin Garnett, he was repeatedly cut off by Kobe, and the Lakers' counterattack was very ferocious, and at halftime, the Lakers had taken a good lead.
Halftime stats, Timberwolves 47:52 Lakers. Shaq O'Neal was the best performer, playing with ease under Bryant's feed, finishing with 17 points and eight rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting. Kobe contributed 8 points, 7 assists and 3 steals, and since O'Neal broke the opponent's interior, he also focused on organization and defense.
On the Timberwolves' side, Tom Gugliotta was on fire while getting plenty of shots under Ceballos' defense. He was 7-of-13 from the field and 2-of-4 from 3-point range for 16 points and five rebounds. When a pitcher throws out of shape, it's often hard for him to stop.
Kevin Garnett played decently, and he didn't have a good chance to play in front of Campbell. Halftime stats: 8 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
And the Timberwolves' No. 4 show, Marbury, is full of big zero eggs. The statistics of 0 points, 2 rebounds, 0 assists and 3 turnovers made him go straight back to the locker room without communicating with his teammates.
Coming back at halftime, Harris put Ceballos on the bench and replaced him with Bruce Bowen.
The substitution was the right one, and Bowen was very restrained from the pitcher. And Marbury's performance in front of Kobe was also very clumsy, Kobe even teased Marbury on the offensive end in the second half, and repeatedly used false shots to point up the eager Marbury, and then hit the shot.
"Don't provoke a sleeping lion. This is the first rule I taught you to survive in the American professional basketball. Bryant said to Marbury after shaking off his shot.
The Lakers were firmly in control of the situation after Bruce Bowen came on, and Tom Gugliotta never got a good shot again. He shot from 7-of-13 to 10-of-25 at the end of the game and just 3-of-12 in the second half with Bowen's defense.
O'Neal was in hot form, and Kobe shook off Marbury to give O'Neal a chance to attack the basket. In the second half, Stephen Marbury still missed the shot, and the game basically went into garbage time in the third quarter.
At the end of the game, the Lakers 98-82 Timberwolves. Win again.
O'Neal had 35 points, 19 rebounds and three assists as he dominated the box. And Kobe Bryant scored 18 points, 4 rebounds, 12 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks, and played a double-double.
