Chapter Seventy-Three: The Battle of the Jehio Valley (4)

PS: Three more presents! Bring the ^_^ ticket

Therefore, the Soviet paratroopers who penetrated deep into our valley were already already too busy to take care of themselves under the triple blow of mines in the ground, fire from our troops in the front, and mortars in the air...... It's good to be able to save your life in this situation, where would you still think about attacking.

Looking at this, I couldn't help but smile with satisfaction...... Didn't the Airborne Forces fight and be ready to be surrounded from the very beginning? I wouldn't be so sorry for you if I didn't surround you now.

At the same time, Soviet armored units outside the valley also launched a fierce attack on the mountain pass...... But the effect is not satisfactory either.

According to the idea of the Soviet army...... There were tank guns on tanks and anti-aircraft machine guns on armored vehicles, and these dozens of tanks and armored vehicles were deployed outside the valley in several rows and columns...... There was a chaotic bombardment of the mountain pass...... What else will be left alive? Even if there was anything left, it would be suppressed and unable to move!

But imagination aside, reality is very cruel......

First of all, there is the problem of the elevation angle of the tank, and at this time the Soviet army was heavily equipped with T62...... This tank is still relatively advanced compared to us, but the problem is that the tank is not suitable for mountain warfare most of the time...... Like the T62, the gun has a maximum elevation angle of only 17 degrees, and the barrel automatically returns to 3 degrees and 30 minutes after each shell is fired to facilitate reloading. This exhausted the tankmen half to death...... They had to stop the tank at an inclined plane so that it had a large enough elevation angle to hit the fortifications on the pass, and then after each shell they had to aim again with great difficulty...... This is not only a laborious problem, but also makes the firepower of the tank gun very limited per unit of time.

The worst ...... Or if these tanks want to be able to hit our positions. It is necessary to stop at the inclined plane and aim...... As soon as you leave this bevel, the elevation angle is not large enough.

This gives us the opportunity to destroy it...... 'blowpipe' anti-aircraft missile, although it is not possible to hit a helicopter. However, the accuracy rate against such stationary targets is still quite high. So I only listened to a few "whoosh" sounds...... Several tanks were smashed into black smoke, only to startle the others immediately and turn to machine gun fire from the turrets.

Not to mention armored vehicles...... Its strengths were speed and basic defense for the infantry, and it now stops outside the valley to provide fire cover for the infantry...... This firepower is indeed sufficient, each armored car has two machine guns, and the bullets are as airtight as rain.

If this is in general...... This firepower was enough to suppress the enemy so that the enemy had no power to fight back, but the problem was that our troops had already built complete fortifications on the position, and many of them had only one shot hole...... No matter how dense the bullets are, we can't help us, but our troops can poke their machine guns out of the firing holes and condescendingly strafe at armored vehicles...... I only heard a chaotic sound of "boom bang". Several armored vehicles were crippled.

The Soviet armored forces really want to say that they are a threat to us...... It's also an infantry fighting vehicle called a BMP, which seems to be a kind of equipment between tanks and armored vehicles...... The tank was heavily armored and firepowered, but it was not flexible enough to move; The armored vehicle acted nimblely, but the firepower was too weak and the armor was too thin.

And infantry fighting vehicles...... THE FIREPOWER IS MODERATE, AND IT IS EQUIPPED WITH A 73MM SMOOTHBORE GUN WITH A MAXIMUM ELEVATION ANGLE OF 33 DEGREES...... This elevation angle is almost twice as large as the tank's 17 degrees. The armor is also modest...... IT IS NEITHER AS HEAVY AND CLUMSY AS A TANK, NOR AS THIN AS AN ARMORED VEHICLE, BUT IS WELDED WITH STEEL PLATES JUST ENOUGH TO PROTECT AGAINST 12.7MM ARMOR-PIERCING AND INCENDIARY SHELLS...... That is, what we call the Deshka anti-aircraft machine gun.

So this thing is hard to deal with...... If the armor is resistant to anti-aircraft machine guns, it means that basically all firearms will not work against it. On the other hand, the elevation angle of its artillery is large enough. The range is also long enough...... The maximum range is 1300 meters, which makes it very flexible. It is possible to fire a cannon while moving on the perimeter...... Because it is in motion, it is very difficult for our artillery to hit it.

Fortunately, most of the fortifications of our army were built on the ridgeline...... The artillery of this infantry fighting vehicle is also a smoothbore gun with low accuracy, so the damage to us is not very great.

The greatest threat to our army is still helicopter gunships...... There is no doubt about this, in places where the terrain is complex and difficult to maneuver, the helicopter will undoubtedly be the best weapon to use, because when other equipment is restricted by the terrain and limits the combat effectiveness, the helicopter is almost unaffected by the terrain...... It is only affected by the weather, but Afghanistan is almost always sunny for 365 days a year.

The Soviets sent a total of 30 Mi-24 planes this time...... Ten of them were used to coordinate the attack of Soviet armored forces at both ends of the valley, and there were no casualties. The other 20 were used to cover two Mi-8 helicopter groups, and after the airborne troops were airborne, they cooperated with the airborne forces...... These helicopter gunships suffered heavy casualties due to the ambush of our troops, and only six remained.

That is, by now there are a total of sixteen Mi-24s left in the Soviet army...... But even these sixteen Mi-24s are difficult to deal with, because at this time, they no longer need to cover anything, they can let go of their hands and feet, and they will no longer fall into our ambush like just now and let us "boom" kill more than ten planes in one go......

On the other hand, we still lack weapons to deal with helicopter gunships...... Anti-aircraft machine guns may be okay to hit the Mi-8, but it is very difficult to deal with the Mi-24, and the small-caliber anti-aircraft guns can indeed effectively destroy the Mi-24, but the reaction is really slow, it is difficult to hit the helicopter flying at high speed in the air, and the size is too large...... The entire platform is 6 meters long and 2 meters wide...... Coupled with two towering barrels, it could easily be a target for enemy helicopters.

Fortunately, all of our anti-aircraft guns had tunnels, and before the war, I strictly ordered that we must adhere to the principle of "save ourselves first, and then think about destroying the enemy", so the soldiers always pushed the anti-aircraft guns back into the tunnels to avoid them after firing a few shots...... The Soviet helicopters had no way to take us for a while.

That's it...... Helicopters began to be active again over the Shigio Valley, and they covered each other in groups with machine guns and missiles, and cooperated with the airborne troops and armored troops to launch continuous attacks on our mountain passes, and they only fought with pleasure...... But it is obvious that because of the considerable number of anti-aircraft machine guns and anti-aircraft artillery in the valley of our army, coupled with the fact that they had lost so many "companions" before, their offensive has been somewhat hesitant and does not dare to be as arrogant as before.

This situation was both unexpected and expected......

Unexpectedly...... I didn't expect that the Soviets would send so many Mi-24s into battle this time...... The message we received from the guerrillas who had defected to the government army was...... The entire Afghan government army has no more than 10 Mi-24s, and the number of Soviet troops is unknown...... The Soviet army will not let the Afghan government army know this confidential information lightly.

However, it won't be too much, because the Mi-24 doesn't have much transportation capacity, but it is a machine that consumes supplies...... This was difficult for the Soviet army, which was struggling to replenish, to maintain a large Mi-24 fleet.

I later learned that I was right...... At this time, the Soviet army had only 40 Mi-24s in total, which means that the Soviets put three-quarters of the Mi-24 into this battle.

To be expected...... I knew that the ambush against the Soviet helicopter gunships would not have wiped out the Mi-24 in one go...... This possibility cannot be said to be none, but it is certainly small. Besides...... Even if I can wipe out the Mi-24...... It does not mean that the Soviets will not send new helicopters to reinforce them, air superiority is a killer weapon for the Soviets, and they will certainly take advantage of this when the Soviets carry out a slightly larger sweep.

In other words, I expected this situation to be in the future...... If anti-aircraft machine guns and small-caliber anti-aircraft guns could effectively counter the Mi-24, then the historical United States would not have risked equipping the Afghan guerrillas with the Stinger.

That's why I asked from the very beginning that the fortifications at the pass should be "anti-artillery, anti-aircraft, anti-infantry...... Many of the fortifications in the pass were tunnels dug deep in the earth's surface...... Moreover, this kind of tunnel is still very strong supported by logs, and no matter how powerful the machine gun and rockets of the helicopter are, they will not be able to penetrate the soil layer up to one or two meters thick!

We're all too familiar with this set...... Not to mention that when our troops resisted US aggression and aided Korea, they used tunnels to defend against Yankee's aircraft and artillery, and we also hid in tunnels on the battlefield in Vietnam.

Because of these experiences, the tunnel has been made to have a full range of functions, with ventilation holes, food, ammunition, and water......

And these tunnels also have very secret entrances and exits, which is a bit like those underground Great Walls built by the Yue devils, and those tunnel entrances cannot be found if they are not targeted search.

What's more...... The Soviets knew nothing about this arrangement of ours, so we had a place to take advantage of!

"No. 1 Pass!" Seeing that the Soviet attack was almost over, I ordered the walkie-talkie: "Retreat as planned, let the Soviet army in!" ”

"Yes!" Vadud answered on the other end of the walkie-talkie.

So it was very ...... Some of the guerrillas at the No. 1 mountain pass pretended that they could not withstand the fire of the Soviet army, abandoned the commanding heights and fortifications next to the mountain pass, and retreated to the mountains on both sides......

This is not to be believed by the Soviet army...... In fact, under the onslaught of Soviet tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, helicopters and other firepower, the guerrillas were able to hold out until now to the Soviet army, so it is normal for them to retreat to the depths of the mountains.

It's just that what they don't know is...... These partisans retreating deep into the mountains were only part of the ...... (To be continued......)
