Chapter 140: Rescue (10)

The roar of Harrier fighters and helicopters began in the night sky, followed by the sound of air defense sirens in Port Stanley......

This point shows at least two problems, one is that the coordination of the British army is still relatively in place, because the flight speed of this helicopter and the fighter is very different, the cruising speed of the helicopter is 248 kilometers per hour, and the Harrier is 1180 kilometers per hour.

It was not an easy task for two aircraft with such a large difference to reach the skies over Port Stanley in the dark at the same time, but the British did it easily.

The other is that the Afghan army in Port Stanley has not done a good job in air defense early warning.

The reason is simple, they did not sound the air raid sirens until the British fleet flew over Port Stanley...... This is almost unimaginable for Port Stanley, which has several radar stations.

Later I learned that there was a reason for this.

First of all, the British army has not sent fighters to carry out air strikes on the Falklands at night, as mentioned before, the British army has only two aircraft carriers in total, and each aircraft carrier has only a dozen Harriers, which makes the Harrier pilots have to deal with the bombing of Argentine fighters that may arrive during the day, so they are a little powerless for the night...... Although the Harrier has the ability to fight at night, the pilot always has to rest, and the fighter also needs a certain amount of maintenance and repair.

This has directly caused the Afghan army to lose its vigilance in air defense in the dark night, and even a considerable part of the Afghan army believes that the night sky belongs to them...... It's understandable that there would be this idea, because only at night did Argentine transport planes and bombers have room to move.

The second is that our battle on the Wireless Ridge attracted the attention of the Argentine army.

You must know that in this battle, we deliberately wanted to create a false impression that the British army had fully broken through the third layer of defense of the Afghan army.

In this regard, we are wireless ridge direction is arranged in this way. For the Argentine special forces still stationed on heights 1 and 2, we used signal jamming, that is, the two special forces could not contact the British forces in Port Stanley. Then concentrate artillery fire on all four heights of the third line of defense.

Of course, there is still a difference between the bombardment of the Wireless Ridge Heights by the British artillery. Because in this position is the breakthrough point between the SAS and our troops, the artillery in this position must be closely coordinated with us.

As a result, the Afghan army in Port Stanley was faced with the following problem:

They can't get in touch with the special forces in positions 1 and 2, that is, the first layer of defense, so they naturally think that the first layer of defense has been lost. The second layer of defense was in the hands of the SAS, and the third layer of defense was heavily bombarded by British artillery, and even Wireless Ridge and Rough Diamond Heights were lost one after another, and there were people everywhere in the dark night outside Port Stanley...... In fact, these gunshots were caused by the deserters of the Afghan army who fell into a scuffle and fought together.

Combining these factors, the Argentine commander had every reason to believe that the British had unwittingly taken the first layer of defense garrisoned by the Argentine special forces. After joining forces with the SAS troops of the second layer of defense, they directly attacked the third layer of defense, and at this time they had even broken through the wireless ridge and approached Port Stanley......

As a result, the entire Stanley Harbor Argentine army was panicked, focusing all its attention on the direction of Wireless Ridge and trying to organize a defensive line to deal with the imminent British offensive of the powerful army.

If this still makes the Argentines wonder if it is the British army that is pressing the border. Then the appearance of a large number of Harriers and helicopters in the sky only strengthened their idea.

But it was not the Air Force that was the first to do it, and with the whistling of shells, one shell after another soon burst into flames in the Afghan artillery positions in Port Stanley and its two flanks...... The naval guns on the British warships got their hands dirty.

Clapp used a total of five warships in the operation.

This is already Clap's best efforts to call in as many warships as possible for us, you must know that the British fleet at this time is not having a good time. Thirty-seven warships have been sunk and twelve damaged. There are only fifteen ships with combat capability. For the sake of protecting the aircraft carrier, the supply ships and troop carriers in the fleet, Clapp could only transfer five warships to participate in this operation.

However, even so, the aircraft carrier formation at this time can be said to be underdefended, after all, even Harrier fighters were sent out more than a dozen at this time. It's just that, considering that the Argentine Air Force has already suffered heavy losses and does not have much ability to fight at night, it dared to organize such a raid.

That's why we set the time for the raid at half past two in the morning...... All units involved in these battles, such as helicopters, warships, etc., had to rush back to the fleet before dawn to prevent bombing by the Afghan Air Force after dawn.

However. Looking at the fireballs that exploded everywhere in the direction of Port Stanley, I couldn't believe that there were only five warships supporting us...... There is only one naval gun per warship, isn't it? Those five warships had only five guns.

Judging by my combat experience. The bombing scene in front of me should have at least two dozen artillery pieces to produce the effect.

At first, I thought it was my own delusion, or that it was a Harrier or a Bobcat helicopter, but then it was also bombed with cluster bombs and rockets. Later, I learned that these were actually fired by naval guns, and the reason why I thought it was more than two dozen artillery pieces...... That's because the British naval guns, which can self-reload ammunition, have a much faster rate of fire than ordinary artillery, and their rate of fire reaches 25 rounds per minute, which is exactly three to four times the rate of fire of ordinary artillery.

Then the Harrier launched strikes at some important military targets in Port Stanley, such as airfields, arsenals, barracks, etc., while several Bobcat helicopters focused their strikes on the Afghan artillery positions that we were about to break through.

With a trail of rockets streaked through the air, a bright red wall of fire rose up in the Afghan artillery position.

The reason for this is obvious, on the one hand, it is to clear the way for us and throw the enemy into chaos, and on the other hand, it is to show us the way forward in the dark night.

So where did we dare to slack off, and with our guns in hand, we covered each other and leaped in the direction of the artillery positions of the Afghan army.

We kept running non-stop...... At this time, we all know one thing, what we lack most at this time is time. Keep in mind that the Harrier doesn't have a large payload, and it can carry up to six free-fall bombs when attacking the ground, and once these bombs are dropped, it will complete the mission and return home.

It only took a few minutes to drop these bombs, and at the same time, the ammunition of the helicopters and warships was almost gone.

That is, we must try to pass through the artillery positions of the Afghan army in these ten minutes, otherwise the Afghan army is very likely to react and be unfavorable to us.

A few minutes later we entered the artillery positions of the Afghan army, and we were greeted by a desolation of artillery and corpses that had been set on fire by rockets, the smell of burnt and gunpowder in the air, and a row of improvised fortifications piled up of sandbags that had been blown up in the direction of us......

Obviously, this was a temporary construction by the artillery of the Afghan army when the battle of Wireless Ridge began, but before they could use it, it was already blown up by helicopters.

That's when we had to slow down...... Because it is obvious that there are not many corpses on the ground, and there are not too many messy footprints on the snow, which shows that the Afghan artillery did not escape, they must be hiding somewhere waiting for us.

Sure enough, when we advanced a few dozen meters across the bombed-out fortifications, we were blocked by the Afghan army.

First of all, two flares came at us from a distance of 200 meters.

I couldn't help frowning at the sight of the flares rising into the sky, because this at least showed that the Afghan artillery was prepared, although this preparation was not very sufficient.

But at this time, I didn't think much about it, but shouted "lie down" and pressed Lin Xia who was following me to the ground.

The gunfire soon rang out, and the bullets "whizzed" and whistled over our heads, like locusts flying past our ears, and we could even feel the heat from its flight. Occasionally, a shuttle of bullets hit the snow in front of us, and the splash of snowflakes hit the face painfully.

At this time, I realized that I was wrong, I thought that the artillery of the Afghan army was only good at artillery and did not have much field combat ability, but I did not expect that this was not the case.

Later, I learned that in fact, only the artillerymen of the Afghan army on the Falklands were experienced veterans.

The army organized by Argentina to garrison the Falklands was not a veteran of guerrilla warfare, as the British had imagined, but young men who had just joined the army.

As for why Argentina did this, the government has two considerations:

One is worried that Chile will take advantage of this time to launch an attack on Argentina, you must know that Chile and Argentina have a long border and long-term territorial disputes.

Therefore, of the more than 10,000 people that Argentina used on the Falklands at this time, only a small part, that is, more than 1,000 people, were veterans of guerrilla warfare, and the rest were young people and even some of them were just adults.

On the other hand, it is because young people are more likely to incite, so as soon as the call is hot, they will come up with a gun on their backs, regardless of what will happen when they arrive at this Falklands.

Therefore, if you consider it from this aspect, it is not surprising that these Afghan troops on the Falklands will have the same variety of expressions as before.

And the reason why this artillery will be all veterans...... That's because this cannon is not like a rifle, and it only needs a simple training.

As a result, we have encountered a situation in which we have been able to fight the army, but we have been hindered in the fight against artillery. (To be continued......)
