Chapter Seventy-One: The Battle of the Hijeo Valley (2)

The sound of gunfire and artillery soon rang out, along with the sound of helicopter propellers, whistling, and explosions as they crashed...... It formed a ground-to-air wrestling.

Problems of the Soviet Army...... It was just that the previous fire reconnaissance was unsuccessful, which directly made them think that we did not have much anti-aircraft fire and jumped into our trap...... This was a strategic failure, so although the pilots of their helicopters were excellent and the equipment was advanced, they could not avoid heavy casualties under our attack.

In fact, we have paid a price...... We have long been armed with anti-aircraft machine guns and small-caliber anti-aircraft guns, and already have a certain amount of air defense capabilities, but we are trying not to expose them...... This almost caused us to have internal conflicts.

This may seem like a trivial matter, but in fact, once this contradiction erupts, it is not trivial...... For example, it is possible that Aduzai will split with us with the original team of the Shigio Valley...... This is entirely possible, because this kind of division and integration can be said to be very common among the Afghan guerrillas, and the common people and some of the partisans see that we are blindly being pressed and beaten by the Soviet army and do not fight back...... If we lose confidence, we will most likely support Aduzai, so in the long run, we may be isolated by them or even forced out of the Hijeo Valley.

But now I don't have to worry about that, because now we have the obvious initiative...... This is enough to give the people and the guerrillas confidence in us.

And now it seems...... The price is well worth it...... It is precisely because of our previous forbearance that the current Soviet army will be relieved to drive the helicopter group into the Xigio Valley, and we will be able to fight this ambush battle against helicopters......

"Boom" was another helicopter, hit by an anti-aircraft machine gun, lost its balance and crashed headlong into a nearby cliff.

The anti-aircraft machine gun was not as powerful as it was now...... Although the anti-aircraft machine guns that our army is using now are the Deshka anti-aircraft machine guns that we used to use on the battlefield before. It is indeed strong for fighting infantry. But the helicopter gunship used to beat the Mi-24 seems to be a bit inadequate. The reason is that the Mi-24 is still a relatively advanced thing in this era...... Equipped with troops in 73, it was the first generation of specialized helicopter gunships in the USSR.

Since it's a gunship...... Then it considers the protection more thoroughly, and the helicopter bottom, pilot's seat, engine, fuel tank and other important parts are equipped with thick armor......

And what about the Deshka anti-aircraft machine guns? ITS ARMOR-PIERCING ABILITY IS ONLY 20MM OF STEEL PLATE AT A DISTANCE OF 100 METERS, AND ITS ARMOR-PIERCING ABILITY DECREASES AS THE DISTANCE INCREASES...... In addition, the Mi-24 also has two systems, one of which has been damaged, and one of which allows it to fly to a safe area and land, so it is difficult for the Deshka anti-aircraft machine gun to pose a threat to the Mi-24 under normal circumstances.

This is why there was no shortage of anti-aircraft machine guns in the guerrillas on the Afghan battlefield, but very few Mi-24s were shot down in the early days.

According to the indeterminate number jù shows...... A total of 355 Mi-24s were shot down on the battlefield in Afghanistan, of which more than 200 were shot down after the guerrillas were equipped with Stingers. Other words...... Before the Stinger was equipped in Afghanistan in '86, Afghanistan had shot down a total of only 100 Mi-24s in six years, an average of 16 per year, and most of them were Afghan guerrillas who risked their lives to smuggle anti-aircraft machine guns into the vicinity of the airport and shoot them down when the helicopter had just taken off......

The reason why it will be so easy when the helicopter first takes off...... It is because the helicopter takes off and has a slow process of climbing...... At this time, the helicopter was not fast and did not have a high altitude, almost exposing its weak sides to the muzzle of the partisan anti-aircraft machine guns.

Now we are in a similar situation to a sneak attack near the airport, and even more advantageous...... The reason is that we condescendingly hit the helicopter below, not to mention that the top is the most vulnerable part of the helicopter...... The top-down strafing also hit the helicopter's propeller, and the string of bullets swept through it as an armor-piercing bullet...... Once the propeller is bent, discounted, or broken. The helicopter would soon lose its balance and slam into the air like a headless fly.

So it's like we're seeing now...... Not long ago, it was all the rage on the battlefield, crossing our valley as if it were no one, bombing indiscriminately Mi-24...... Now it's as fragile as paper, and we've killed four or five of them in just a few moments.

The rest of the Mi-24 were not slow to respond. Seeing this, he hurriedly made a turn and rushed to the anti-aircraft machine guns and small-caliber anti-aircraft guns that were located on the commanding heights...... Their choice was right, on the one hand, they could suppress these anti-aircraft firepower with firepower and save their comrades from being passively beaten. On the other hand...... Kill these fire points, and you and the other helicopters will be safe.

It's just that what these helicopters didn't think of was...... This is just one part of my trap, the high ground we are on is a hill after a hill, that is, there is a high ground above a high ground...... As a result, the helicopters stared at their targets, but they did not notice that rows of anti-aircraft machine guns and anti-aircraft artillery were sticking out of their heads......

So there was another "whoosh" fight...... In a few moments, the Soviet helicopter formation was stunned...... It's only to blame that they haven't learned Sun Tzu's Art of War, and they don't know that there is such a thing as "serial schemes" in this world.

As a result, the Soviet helicopter fleet suffered heavy losses...... Most of the Mi-24s with weapons were knocked out as soon as they appeared, and most of the rest were Mi-8s without weapons...... You must know that each Mi-8 can carry a platoon of Soviet soldiers, and now it can be said that it is almost unprotected under the enemy's machine guns...... As a result, the entire helicopter formation soon became chaotic, some of them were in a hurry to make evasive actions, and some of them hurriedly pulled to a high place...... The sky was full of Mi-8 flying in all directions, like a swarm of mosquitoes that had been startled.

Where would the fighters let go of such a good opportunity, turn the muzzle of the gun, and bombard those Mi-8s...... Only the wolves who fled from the helicopters were unbearable.

However, a few minutes later, the Soviet helicopter flew out of the ambush circle of our troops...... This is the advantage of air power, helicopters fly in the sky, but our anti-aircraft weapons are placed on the ground...... Helicopters move and we don't, and we can't do anything about them as long as they're out of our range.

Of course, part of this was due to the fact that the partisans had not yet mastered anti-aircraft machine guns and anti-aircraft artillery...... Due to the shortage of manpower in our army, the anti-aircraft machine guns were basically operated by the guerrillas, and the anti-aircraft artillery was only equipped with 50 pieces, and each gun also had four partisans...... Since the guerrillas are uneven, their combat effectiveness will inevitably be affected.

Merely...... This process was enough for the Soviet army to feel distressed for a while, because there were already eight Mi-24 and five Mi-8 lying under this cliff...... The reason why more Mi-24s will be destroyed than Mi-8s is because we have set the main target of the attack to be helicopter gunships, which is also my order.

The helicopter group in the other direction had almost the same encounter, except that the Soviet helicopter group in that direction was slightly later than this side and was warned by friendly forces, so the losses were much smaller, only six Mi-24 and two Mi-8.

I think...... If the Soviet commander had been sensible, he should have realized that he had fallen for the trick and should have pulled his troops back to replan, but he didn't......

I don't know why he chose to continue...... Maybe it's because he was beaten in the eye, or maybe it's because he thinks that the Mi-8 casualties are not big and there is hope for victory...... The Mi-8 carried a large number of infantry, and as long as the infantry successfully parachuted, it was really possible to take the Xigio Valley with internal and external attacks.

Like I can see...... The Mi-8 helicopter group quickly regrouped under the cover of the Mi-24, and after flying to a high area, it opened a parachute from the rear of the cabin, and the whole sky was as if it was covered with dandelions...... If it weren't for the fact that I knew it was war, I would have wanted to stop and admire it.

Helicopter parachute ...... It's not just a matter of jumping down with a parachute on your back, because the helicopter propeller will cause the air flow around you to be disturbed, which will increase the danger of parachuting.

But on the battlefield, many times it is necessary to parachute, and the reason is needless to say...... Restricted by terrain, such as our Higio Valley...... It's just a valley about two kilometers wide, surrounded by cliffs and mountains, if it were airdropped by transport planes...... Then it is fast, high in height, and widely dispersed...... The paratroopers jumped down, and when they reached the ground, they found that only half of them had landed in the valley, and the other half had landed on the mountain...... This meant that half of the troops had been lost since the parachute landing.

Helicopter parachuting is different...... It can control the altitude of the parachute to about 400 meters to 800 meters...... It is generally believed that the minimum height of the parachute should not be less than 150 meters, otherwise the parachute will not have time to open. Of course, this is for military parachutes, and under normal circumstances, for the sake of safety, the height of the parachute will be controlled at about 600 meters. (Note: Parachuting below 300 meters is the only task of special forces.) )

As I see now, the parachute of the Soviet troops is at an altitude of 600 meters...... At such an altitude, the landing area of the paratroopers is small, so they can basically successfully land in the valley, which is the charm of helicopter parachuting...... It is also thanks to the fact that the Soviet Union trained a large number of airborne troops, otherwise I really don't know how to fight this war in Afghanistan. (To be continued......)
