Chapter 58: Familiarize yourself with the equipment

That night, the Vietnamese army launched three charges on the 581 heights.

But I have to say that the night combat capability of the Fifth Infantry Division of the Vietnamese Army is far from that of the 316A Division of the Vietnamese Army, perhaps this has something to do with the fact that they are American troops! The Yankees were super afraid of night battles back then, didn't they?

Actually, this is not to say that the Yankees are more timid or anything, although this is true. The more important reason for this...... It should be said that it is because of objective reasons.

First of all, of course, because you are not familiar with the terrain, if you still fight at night when the terrain is not familiar, then the whole thing is a blind man touching an elephant. Yankees' lives are worth their money...... Of course they wouldn't do such a stupid thing.

The second is because of the equipment, compared to Soviet-style weapons...... The equipment of the US military is more sophisticated, that is, the range is longer and the accuracy is higher, such as the difference between the M16 and the Ak47. In fact, this is not only the case with assault rifles, but also most of other weapons such as machine guns have such characteristics, which is determined by the military characteristics and R&D styles of the two countries. The United States paid more attention to advanced equipment, while the Soviet Union paid more attention to cheap and rapid mass production...... There are a lot of people, and although the weapons are not very good, they can burst out with quite amazing combat effectiveness with rapid and large quantities of investment.

So...... Will the Yankees have this kind of equipment with a longer range and higher accuracy to fight the Vietnamese army with Soviet-style equipment at night? When it's dark, isn't the long range and high accuracy all wasted? So just like what you can see in movies and television, the Yankees always pile sandbags around the positions before dark to defend themselves in case the Vietnamese army will carry out a sneak attack at night.

Of course, if it is the US military equipped with night vision devices, then it is a different matter. However, this equipment was still advanced in this era. Even the U.S. military is only a small amount of equipment.

So. The 5th Infantry Division of the Vietnamese Army, which was also equipped with American-style equipment, should have avoided a night battle with our army because of equipment and training factors...... It's just that the 581 heights taken by our army are too important, one because of the traffic arteries it blockades, and the other because of the storage of ammunition...... So they launched three attacks on our army.

However, due to the natural fear of night battles and the unfamiliarity with the terrain...... Some people may say, isn't this 5th Infantry Division of the Vietnamese Army Vietnamese? How can you be afraid that you will not be familiar with the terrain in a night battle? You must know that although they are Vietnamese, they are South Vietnamese...... When North Vietnam was still fighting barefoot guerrillas, Saigon in South Vietnam had already begun to get drunk with money with the help of France and the United States.

In other words. That is, the South Vietnamese were more influenced by Western culture, while the North Vietnamese were more influenced by the Soviet Union and China. This directly leads to the fact that there are great differences between the north and the south in terms of personality and living habits.

So these three attacks were easily beaten back by us without exception.

The most ridiculous thing is zuihou once...... Maybe Zuihou once the Vietnamese army had no will to fight at all, and it is assumed that they were forced into the position by officers...... From the Vietnamese prisoners of war, we know that the officers of the Fifth Infantry Division of the Vietnamese Army are all North Vietnamese soldiers, and they are also some soldiers with a "firm political stance and tenacious will to fight". It is precisely for this reason that there was an incident in which the Vietnamese army shot and killed the Vietnamese soldiers who were about to surrender on the 419 heights.

All right...... When the Vietnamese army came up once, it was pitch black and black and no one saw me and fired at me indiscriminately, which was a grenade and a machine gun, and the fight was very lively. And there were people shouting, "We've been ambushed." I ask for support, I ask for support! ”

"It's the PLA...... There are too many of them. There are at least two companies! ”

……

I have to admit that they did it a similar way, if it weren't for the fact that I knew Vietnamese and knew what they were shouting...... I really thought that there was a unit of our army below that was fighting fiercely with them!

The more devils tossed for a while and then retreated, only to see that the soldiers were stunned and opened their mouths wide and couldn't close them for a long time...... You must know that the ammunition of these Vietnamese troops is stored in the high ground we are defending, which means that the ammunition of the Vietnamese army is very precious now, but they are tossing like this......

But then again, maybe they just want their ammunition to run out as soon as possible, so they don't have to go to war again, right?

That's when I thought something was weird...... From this point of view, it seems that the Vietnamese army was wrong to put this Fifth Infantry Division in such an important position for the main attack. But thinking about it quickly becomes clear...... Most of the troops of the Vietnamese devils are still in Cambodia and have not had time to withdraw, and their only few main forces have been disabled by us in the counterattack, such as the 316A Division, so who else can the Fifth Infantry Division that can now take on the main attack task not give this Fifth Infantry Division?

This also allowed us to have some preparation time for the night.

The first is the formation and training of the cannon platoon...... We brought out three of the five grenade launchers for use, two for direct combat use, and one for backup.

The reason for this decision is, first, to save ammunition...... Although the grenade launcher in the cave has a lot of ammo, I know from Marx that this thing has a fast rate of fire...... Later, I learned that the theoretical rate of fire of this thing was more than 300 rounds per minute, and if the recruits were left uncontrolled, the entire ammunition depot would have been wiped out of grenades in less than half an hour.

Another one...... It's because I know that this grenade launcher is a treasure, and our country doesn't have it, right? Moreover, the next step is the policy of strengthening the army, and we will arm ourselves with large-scale study and imitation of foreign weapons...... This is actually very helpless, China in this era is too far behind other countries, and it is impossible not to learn.

So...... Two of the grenade launchers were sent back to China for study. Of course, we have to be able to live...... I've already made a plan, if we can't survive until the reinforcements arrive, we will blow up the mouth of the cave and seal the ammunition depot, so that the Vietnamese army can't do anything for a while, maybe the reinforcements can arrive in time to get this batch of equipment.

In this batch of equipment...... I believe that there are also individual radios that will also have research value, and communication equipment has always been a shortcoming of our army, right? As for those M16s, mortars or something...... These should not be of much use, our army is taking the route of Soviet-style equipment, and in the long run, the cooperation between China and the United States is temporary, and historical facts have also proved this, so it is more reliable to take the Soviet-style route.

Anyway, Marx did have two hands, and soon learned how to use the grenade launcher...... But then again, the use of various weapons and equipment is actually about the same, and it is not a difficult task. The real difficulty is in its maintenance and some precautions that we don't know...... Just like the M16.

But that's not something we need to care about, we just need to stick to it for a day anyway. So the fighters quickly learned how to use the grenade launcher, and they really did...... In order to make them more proficient, Marx asked each of them to go up and shoot a few rounds, and the "sudden" burst ...... I saw a few sparks exploding from a long distance below the position, which only made the soldiers smack their tongues.

"This thing can hit this far!" Even Marx was a bit surprised.

Later, I learned from the captives that the effective range of this grenade launcher is 1,500 meters, and the maximum range can even reach 2,212 meters...... Far farther than my sniper rifle!

Then came the construction of the fortifications......

This is also for the grenade launcher, and the experience of the battlefield tells us that any powerful equipment will inevitably be the focus of the enemy's attack. For example, machine-gun positions, like mortar positions...... These places were certainly the first places frequented by enemy artillery.

So, one thing is for sure, grenade launchers will also be the focus of Vietnamese artillery strikes.

Originally, I wanted to place this grenade launcher at the mouth of the tunnel...... The tunnel we built is strong, isn't it? The Vietnamese army's long-range artillery could not hit our anticline, and the power of the mortar was difficult to blow up our tunnel mouth, so this vitality was strong.

But after thinking about it, I felt that it was inappropriate...... If any of the points of fire cannot be moved, they will become the target of targeted killings...... This is very passive, and it seems that you can only wait for the enemy to think of a way to fight later, or you will be suppressed by the enemy's firepower and will not be able to play a role.

Another...... It's just that this grenade launcher is not very heavy, it is only more than 100 pounds connected to the tripod, and the two fighters can maneuver on the battlefield one after the other...... It's a shame not to take advantage of it.

So as soon as I gave the order, the traffic trenches were widened and deepened, and several more traffic trenches were added to important parts...... The purpose is to facilitate the movement of the grenade launcher between the tunnels.

After all these preparations are made, it is a matter of familiarizing the fighters with the American equipment...... We basically follow the principle of matching the troops, that is, if you use AK47, you will learn to use the M16, and if you use a machine gun for shifts, you will learn to use a general-purpose machine gun......

Some people may say, didn't you just say that it is not difficult to learn to fight these weapons? Why don't you use so many machine guns and bazookas in the cave?

It's true that you can learn this, but you also have to be able to play accurately! For example, if you are used to shooting submachine guns, let him shoot machine guns or bazookas...... It is difficult to adapt to its recoil in a short period of time.

And machine guns have the benefits of machine guns, and rifles also have the benefits of rifles...... The rifle is relatively light and short, allowing for flexible movement and transfer between positions and tunnels, if everyone is armed with a machine gun...... Well, this firepower is fierce, but the entire unit has no mobility and flexibility at all, and even has to queue up to enter the tunnel...... Then wait for the devils to invite artillery fire to knock us out! (To be continued......)
