557 Tug-of-war

After receiving the reconnaissance information of the Air Force, Foch instantly felt a pain, if the Belarusian Front was returning to Warsaw, it would mean that his attempt to capture Warsaw would be more difficult to achieve, and if he continued at this pace, it was likely that he would be beaten at both ends, neither rescuing Seibert nor taking Warsaw, and even more severely, even his main force would be surrounded by the enemy.

Foch was faced with a difficult choice, at which point he could no longer juggle either Warsaw or Seibert, and he had to choose one or the other.

After a difficult battle between heaven and man, the old man chose Seibert, and soon he revised his previous order, ordered the cessation of the all-out attack on Warsaw, withdrew most of the attacking troops from the street fighting, and prepared to immediately rescue Seibert, who was tragically surrounded.

So why did Foch choose this way? The reason is that an old antique like Foch, who had experienced World War I, would subconsciously choose the safest and most conservative battle plan.

For Foch, Warsaw was there and would not run away, and if Seibert were to fall, it would be a military and political disaster. If you think about the four American divisions that participated in the coalition forces and were destroyed in the battlefield of Warsaw, what would the Americans think? Will he, the commander-in-chief of the coalition forces, use the US army as cannon fodder?

Otherwise, why are the American troops killed and wounded on the battlefield, while the French and British armies are so intact?

Foch doesn't expect American politicians to understand his grievances, and if they really want to think so, he's at a loss for words. This is only a political consideration, and militarily Foch has to go to the rescue of Seibert first, because if Seipert is finished. His troops vomited all the results of the previous defeat of the Belorussian Front. He would be far behind the Red Army in terms of total strength. That means the rest of the battle will be very difficult.

And if Seibert is not saved, Foch's logistics line will be cut off, and the daily consumption of more than a dozen divisions of troops is a large number, and without sufficient supplies, the coalition forces will not be able to fight at all.

Therefore, it is reasonable that Foch must first save Seibert and "incidentally" open up the transportation line. The old man's movements were also quite fast, urging the troops to quickly disengage from the Belarusian Front, preparing to break through Ubolevich's defense line in one go.

In this round of the encounter. Foch was largely correct, not making the same mistakes as he had previously taken for granted, and his rapid adjustment of forces caused great trouble for Ubolevich.

As mentioned earlier, Ubolevich is preparing to fight a war of annihilation, preparing to eliminate Seibert, according to his estimates, Foch should not react so quickly, and should leave him more time. But once again, the old man overtook Ubolevich's reaction and almost disrupted Ubolevich's deployment.

Why is it a little worse? Because although Ubolevich has made the best plans, he is not without the possibility of the worst. In his position at Foch, it is possible to abandon Warsaw. U-turn and hit the Baltic Front first. Therefore, in terms of troop allocation, Ubolevich used four divisions to encircle. The remaining five divisions, along with some of the remnants of the Belorussian Front, were thrown into defensive operations, creating a tight line between Foch's main force and Seibert's besieged forces.

So when Foch broke away from Warsaw with part of his main force (more than six divisions) to rescue Seibert, he ran headlong into an iron plate!

The battle was extremely fierce, supervised by Foch himself, and the first wave of attacks invested three divisions, it can be said that the British and French forces were put into the battlefield on the scale of a whole battalion and a whole regiment, and the impact was staggering!

Old Dayan later recalled: "The enemy's determination to fight was very firm, and he launched wave after wave of attacks on my position almost at the cost of a single qiē, and we fought from dawn until sunset, and repelled a total of ten waves of enemy attacks......"

"The enemy not only invested an astonishing number of troops, but also the artillery support was quite fierce, my first line of positions were ploughed by the enemy's heavy artillery, and the trenches that had been repaired like cobwebs were all flattened, and the soldiers exchanged ......fire with the enemy while removing the dirt from their bodies."

"The battle went on until four o'clock in the afternoon, and seeing that it was impossible to break through our line with the combination of infantry and heavy artillery, the enemy also threw tank units into the battlefield, and about forty FT-17 tanks covered the infantry and rushed towards my position. The formation was quite dense, and they seemed to decide that there was nothing we could do with the tanks......"

Foch did think that the Red Army lacked anti-armor capabilities, and that the Red Army would quickly collapse under the impact of tanks, in fact, he had previously asked for tank troops to be put into the first wave of the offensive, but unfortunately the tanks of this era were really not powerful, and it took too much time and effort to assemble, and by the time they actually went to the battlefield, the battle of the day had already come to an end.

Not only did the Entente tanks come in too late, but in Dayan's words: "My lad is not afraid of enemy tanks, we have been trained before, and we have the weapons to destroy them!" The French are counting on tanks to open the way, and they really miscalculated! ”

In fact, as soon as the FT-17 rushed to the front of the Red Army position, it was hit by intensive fire, first the howitzer was covered with artillery fire, then the recoilless gun and the anti-tank gun went into battle, and finally when the tank rushed to within 100 meters of the Red Army position, the infantry of the Red Army and the PLA rushed up again with rocket launchers and anti-tank grenades. After a fierce battle, one of Foch's tank regiments into the battlefield was almost completely wiped out, and only single-digit tanks escaped with scars.

Why did the FT-17 play so badly? The reason is not only that the Red Army and the People's Liberation Army have extremely powerful anti-tank firepower, but more importantly, the battlefield itself is not suitable for tanks. Dayan also mentioned before that the heavy artillery fire of the Entente was quite fierce and plowed the battlefield.

Under heavy artillery bombardment, the battlefield was full of craters, and the ground was unusually soft. And the cross-country ability of the early tanks, to be honest, is really not good. The FT-17 of the French was probably a little better, and almost half of the tanks of the British broke down on the battlefield for various reasons. Then the target was killed by anti-tank fire from the Red Army and the PLA.

In fact, the British, who were the first to put tanks on the battlefield, also discovered it in actual combat. The use of tanks on the battlefield is actually quite restrictive. He didn't have the ability to wade through mountains and rivers like he was on flat ground, and there was even a record of a tank drowning its entire crew because it got stuck in too muddy ground. Later, in order to solve this problem, the British assigned engineer support to the tank unit, and the engineer explored the way in front of the tank and guided the tank to advance safely around the traps on the battlefield.

It's just that in this battle, both the British and the French were careless, because Tukhachevsky's troops had nothing to do with tanks, and they took it for granted that Ubolevich's troops were no better. Thought that they only needed to throw tanks into the battlefield to scare off the Russian Red Bandits.

Obviously, the facts gave them a blow in the face, and the precious tank troops that Foch brought to the battlefield in Warsaw were consumed by one-third in the first battle, and the huge consumption made Foch have to be more cautious in the use of tank troops, and only dared to invest tanks on a small scale in the next offensive to probe.

As we all know, armored forces must be used intensively in order to exert maximum effectiveness, and Foch's use is undoubtedly a taboo in the art of war, and the scattered tank units have no way to impact Ubolevich's position, Foch's approach is simply self-defeating!

Ubolevich wished that Foch would abandon his martial arts, and the tanks could not be put into the battlefield on a large scale. Naturally, there was less pressure on his troops. In fact, on the first day of the blockade, except in the morning Ubolevich was taken aback by Foch's decisiveness. The rest of the day was very easy.

The five divisions responsible for blocking Foch's main force were not under much pressure on the first day of fighting, and the British and American troops who rushed into the battlefield were not much different from the Poles in the eyes of the Red Army and PLA commanders and fighters in other respects, except for the more frightening artillery fire, and even less crazy and difficult than some brave Poles.

All in all, the blocking troops felt relaxed and happy, and even felt that Ubolevich had overestimated the enemy's combat effectiveness, and there was no need for five divisions to block the attack, and with the level of combat exposed on the first day of the Anglo-French army, three divisions were enough to block the attack.

Fortunately, Ubolevich was not carried away by the momentary victory, and he still maintained enough calm. It is true that the performance of the Anglo-French alliance on the first day was not good, but this does not mean that their combat effectiveness is only at this level.

The Anglo-French alliance was poor, mainly due to Foch's too hasty orders and fatigue in continuous combat, as well as the discomfort caused by the sudden change of combat mode. When they get used to it, the battle won't be so easy!

Ubolevich's estimate was very accurate, and after some adjustments by the Anglo-French forces the next day, he was indeed much better, and he no longer underestimated the enemy, and he was extremely dedicated and professional in the battle. For example, their infantry and artillery coordination was perfect, and at one time they captured part of the positions of the Red Army and the People's Liberation Army. If it weren't for Ubolevich's order to the rocket artillery unit to sweep away the British and French soldiers who broke through with fire, the outcome of the battle would be really hard to say.

After two days of fighting, both the Red Army, the People's Liberation Army, and the Anglo-French forces began to reassess the combat effectiveness of the enemy on the opposite side. At this stage of the battle, the Red Army and the PLA were slightly better, because Ubolevich constantly kept his orders in front of him and paid enough attention to the Anglo-French army, so they did not lose an inch of position.

Their opponents, the British and French forces, had the urge to vomit blood, such as Foch, who, after seeing the combat effectiveness of the enemy on the opposite side, asked his chief of staff in a daze: "Are the troops that fought against us before really the Red Army?" ”

His chief of staff, of course, knew which unit the old man said "fought with us before", and it was none other than Tukhachevsky's Belarusian Front. The appearance of the Belarusian Front really disdains them, if such a unit is the strongest and most elite unit in Russia, then the combat effectiveness of the Russians is really a piece of!

Is it necessary to show respect for the-like troops? For the officers of the Entente, naturally, it was not needed. And now when they meet another Russian unit that is said to be worse than the-like Belarusian Front, contempt and disregard are too normal!

And now, the combat effectiveness of the Baltic Front almost makes them vomit blood, this is the legendary improvised patchwork front inferior to the Belarusian Front? and liar!

The chief of staff understands Foch's mood very well, and in fact he also has a feeling that he has been cheated by the Belarusian front, Nima. The Belarusian Front is simply a black-hearted bun, okay! Don't bring such a trick!

Fortunately, there is still time for Foch to adjust. The Anglo-French forces quickly completed self-regulation. Don't dare to despise the Baltic Front anymore and begin to devote yourself to the battle, which means that the battle will turn to the bloody and cruel side!

On the third day, the battle was quite fierce, around the first line of trenches, the two sides carried out a constant tug-of-war, every time one side had just occupied the position, the enemy overwhelming rain of bullets smashed down, and followed by a wave of powerful counter-charges. And just after the success of the counter-charge. The enemy's artillery began to exert its might again, and so on, and so on, and the two sides turned the first-line positions into flesh and blood, and the end result was that no one could occupy the first-line positions.

And such a tug-of-war will continue for two or three days, and when Seibert's troops will be annihilated, when will it stop.

However, compared to the success on the defensive end, Ubolevich encountered a lot of trouble on the offensive end, and Seibert's troops were much more combative and resilient than he expected, and the interspersed division operation was carried out quite difficult at the beginning, and the attacking troops could not penetrate at all. The Americans did not hesitate to use hand-to-hand combat to stubbornly drive the Red Army back to the starting positions again and again!!

What's more, Seibert contracted particularly firmly. His troops are all in a group, and they are very closely connected to each other, and this guy has also turned his troops into groundhogs, fighting and doing crazy earthwork, and running his defense zone impenetrable.

In the face of such a difficult opponent, after Ubolevich attacked twice, he gave up his hard attack, and if he continued to attack strongly, even if he succeeded, the loss would be too great, and it would not be cost-effective at all. His troops had previously paid a heavy price in the first Battle of Warsaw, and he didn't want to repeat it!

"Surround them, cut off their water supply, suppress them with artillery fire on the one hand, and carry out tunnel operations on the other!"

This is the method given by Ubolevich, and the effect of this method is undoubtedly relatively slow, after all, the tunnel operation is not so easy. So why did Ubolevich choose this slow solution? Isn't he worried about time at all? After all, the pressure on the blocking troops is not small!

Not to mention, Ubolevich was not really worried about this problem, and when Foch quickly withdrew from Warsaw and began to turn around and attack him, Tukhachevsky did not react at first, and he underestimated Foch's cunning and decisiveness as much as Ubolevich.

However, Tukhachevsky would not have watched Foch's troops leave in such a calm manner, and he soon ordered his troops to start a counterattack, asking them to hold back the enemy in front of them as much as possible. Under Tukhachevsky's frantic investment at any cost, Foch's subsequent plan to withdraw his troops from the battlefield became very unsmooth, like stepping into a swamp and not being able to pull out his legs at all.

In this case, it was difficult for him to commit more troops to storm Ubolevich's defenses, and the situation on the battlefield reached a stalemate for the second time. However, compared to the first stalemate, Ubolevich and Tukhachevsky are in much better form.

After all, Tukhachevsky's Belarusian Front and Frunze's Ukrainian Front are rapidly moving towards Warsaw, and once the follow-up troops arrive in Warsaw, the balance of strength will completely tilt in favor of the Red Army.

And where are Foch's reinforcements? Still on the Berlin line, from Berlin to Warsaw is much farther than Brest to Warsaw. To put it mildly, by the time Foch's reinforcements arrived, the old man would probably be under siege.

In the face of this passive situation, Foch did not have much to do, and it was difficult for the clever woman to cook without rice, and he had no way but to run over Ubolevich's defense. So on the fourth day of the battle, the Anglo-French army went crazy. Wave after wave of non-stop attacks, even at night, 24 hours a day to start, as if the goal is not achieved, vow not to stop.

Now the pressure on Ubolevich's blocking troops became very great, such as the aforementioned old Dayan, whose troops were almost finished again, and at 11 o'clock in the evening that day, this strong man with the last guard company used his fists and teeth to repel the enemy's attack, and at this time there were only five people left around him!

Let's put it this way, the four-day fierce battle almost consumed half of the strength of the blocking troops, and the corpses on the battlefield were unbearable, and both sides were fighting to the death with the last perseverance! The comparison is who can persevere to the end, and the comparison is whose willpower is stronger!

On the fifth day, the battle was still repeated see-saw and stalemate, but with the superiority of the troops, Foch was moving forward little by little, and Ubolevich's blocking troops gradually began to lose their strength and began to retreat continuously.

Faced with this situation, Foch shouted almost on the field phone: "Attack! Go on the offensive! Don't stop for a moment! Even if it is a pile of human lives, you have to break through the defense line of the red bandits! It's a death order! ”

By the early hours of the sixth day of the battle, Ubolevich's blocking forces had only the last line of defense, and even this line of defense was crumbling under the constant onslaught of the British and French forces, as if this broken line of defense would collapse as soon as the British and French forces launched an attack...... (To be continued......)

PS: Bow and thank you Comrade Juventus!
