Chapter 3: Beneath the Abyss
Looking at everything around her beyond comprehension, Keisha overturned her previous perception that the underworld was not dim.
But the light in front of her didn't feel good for her, and she couldn't tell how strange it was, but there was always an uneasiness like a vulture hovering in her heart.
A ghostly purple glimmer emanated from the cave walls, glowing indentations parallel to the ground, like purple fluorescent hearts shining through the ribs. The light was hazy, as if it was separated by a layer of fascia, and the essence could not be seen clearly.
Ribbed tunnels on both sides, young Keisha couldn't help but think.
But what creature would have such long ribs? It seems more appropriate to say that you are in the middle of a huge pupae.
Keisha followed the light all the way down, eating the scattered water bags and rotting peaches she had found earlier in the ruins.
It was exactly what she needed, and after three days of starvation, anything she could satisfy was now precious to her.
Kane was still following her like a ghost, but he wasn't as light as Keisha and was gradually distanced.
He carried several kilograms of food and water on his back, a spear in his hand that was a little heavy for a ten-year-old, dragged a crippled body, and kept his voice low to keep Keisha from noticing...... It's hard enough to keep up with her.
But he didn't dare to make a sound to let Keisha stop, for fear that she would miss his adventure and lead his fate to the end where no one survived.
He prayed to Nasus in the dark, praying that the two would be able to see Shurima's sun again.
Although he knew it was useless, Nasus was lost in the sand, where could he hear a child's prayers.
Thinking of the danger he was about to face, Kane felt that it was better to count on Nasus than to count on the sudden "ding" in his head and activate some system.
However, he quickly discarded these unrealistic thoughts, because if he didn't keep up, he might lose them.
The end of the spear was pestled on the hard ground, leaving no trace of it.
Kane noticed that the rock beneath his feet was smooth and flat, not because of the flow of lava, but because of the things that came and went.
He knew what it was......
The Void Creature, the next thing he was going to face, was at the end of this tunnel.
……
At the end of the tunnel is a huge cavern that suddenly opens up.
Here, the light is more concentrated and bright, and the swaying ghostly purple light illuminates the entire cavern.
The tunnel underfoot twists and circles here, then bifurcating and branching out.
Up, down, in all directions.
Above Keisha's head was a spiral passage, and she might be able to climb out of it along a steep narrow path that protruded like a spine.
Just as she thought about it, there was a commotion not far below her.
"What's that......"
She subconsciously covered her mouth, and her eyes followed the steeply sunken slope to see a large group of creatures squirming under the abyss.
Nature could never have given birth to such a strange and ugly existence to the extreme, and just looking at it can make people feel sick to their stomachs and fear.
Clusters of needles emitting warm purple light stared straight at her, more complex than the starlight in the sky.
They are like creatures from another world, their distinct limbs hooked to the edge of the abyss, dragging out a strange and terrifying body.
The structure of these creatures was primitive and terrifying, covered in rough purple-black carapaces, protruding from bony protrusions, and flesh glowing with the pale color of a stillborn child.
The hard gums of teeth are dense but uneven fangs, and the large mouth of the blood basin is cracked to the throat, and the filthy saliva is exposed.
The large diamond-shaped skull corresponds to their connected chest and abdomen and protruding back, which houses what can be biologically called a heart.
But it wasn't really a heart, but a collection of energy that glowed with an eternal purple light, ghostly and vicious purple light illuminating the rock wall through the fascia of the crevices between the chitin carapaces.
"It's a monster!"
Keisha remembered for a moment the horrible stories her father had told her.
The underworld is infested with monsters, lurking in the darkness, dragging passing travelers down, and no one has been able to return in stone.
She used to think it was only stories, but when they were alive in front of her, hunger was replaced by fear again!
The evil Void creatures had already discovered Keisha, and they were driven by endless hunger, with an irrepressible urge to kill, and climbed the slope to swarm the girls.
Keisha clenched the dagger in both hands, trying to protect herself.
A monster about the size of Keisha was the first to pounce, and the young Kaisha repelled the ugliness in front of her from the inside out, and stabbed the dagger in her hand with all her strength with all the coordination she had never had before.
She was thrown to the ground, her bladed limbs easily cutting through the delicate flesh of Keisha's forearms, and splatters of blood onto the chitin shells of the surrounding monsters, greedily absorbing them.
But at the same time, the blade of the dagger in her hand also stabbed the monster's shimmering pulsating heart with precision.
The monster's swoop propelled her down the slope with a massive impact, both rolling deeper into the abyss.
Kane, who was too late, only had time to see Keisha roll down at the mouth of the cave, and his eyes widened, as if he saw an invisible rope at this moment, and its ends were tied around the waists of the two of them.
And the rope called fate suddenly tightened, and his body began to run forward.
He burst out of the tunnel at unprecedented speed, scurrying through the dense swarm of insects and hurtling down the abyss before the scythe blades that popped out on either side cut off his knees.
He didn't know how steep the slope beneath his feet was, and after a brief moment of air, he fell heavily on the hard rock and rolled down the abyss in great embarrassment.
……
Kane was awakened by the new pain, and when he tried to sit up on the ground, he found that his left arm had no other feedback than pain.
Fortunately, the ribs did not break again, but the slightly improved lungs were squeezed and began to cough up blood.
But these are not the most important things, what matters is Keisha......
The unconscious Keisha was lying in the corner of his eye, beside the creature that had been pierced through the heart.
The contents of its chest had dimmed, no longer emitting a purple light as rhythmically as it breathed.
According to Kane's knowledge of the creatures of the Void, the monster is dead.
Kane moved his knee and walked over, and what he saw next made him breathe so hard that he almost coughed up blood - Keisha's injured forearm was covered in a strange layer of skin.
The breastplate that originally belonged to the monster was now firmly attached to her forearm!
"I endured it for three days, this step... Finally it worked! Although he was hidden throughout the whole process, Kane had an unparalleled sense of involvement, as if he was the one who had completed the symbiosis now.
He was so excited that he burst into tears, and if it weren't for his body, he would have been eager to roll on the ground and celebrate this hard-won first victory.
