Chapter 49: Zheyin Mountain (14)

The grenade launcher of the Vietnamese devil is the M79 grenade launcher captured from the U.S. military in the U.S.-Vietnam War.

In the U.S.-Vietnam War, the U.S. military gave a large amount of M79 equipment to the South Vietnamese army, and when the U.S. troops withdrew and the South Vietnamese army surrendered, North Vietnam also received a large amount of American-style equipment from the South Vietnamese army, including M79 grenade launchers.

Needless to say, the grenade launcher is a weapon that is somewhere between a grenade and a mortar.

The distance of the grenade is about 50 meters, and the master can throw it to 70 meters, and some good fighters can even throw it to 100 meters...... There is such a guy in our synthetic battalion, and the soldiers call him a "human mortar", that is, anyone can be used as a mortar. Many people have concluded that he can throw so far, thinking that it is because he is tall, has long hands, and has enough arm strength and waist strength, so he can throw more than 80 meters, and occasionally 100 meters, but this is a special case even in our synthesis camp.

Although the mortar hit a long distance, its minimum range was 200 meters because of the angle of fire, that is, there was a vacuum at a distance of 70 to 200 meters, so the grenade launcher with a maximum range of 400 meters was invented. This is a bit similar to the grenadiers widely used by the Japanese devils in World War II, except that small Japan had not yet made the grenadier into the form of a gun at that time, and the grenadier hit a grenade instead of a special grenade.

The advantage of the M79 grenade launcher is that it can be fired from hiding in a bunker, just like the current Viet Devils, who are holding grenade launchers and are mixed in the crowd of Vietnamese troops charging towards our position. Until they get within 100 meters, they hide behind rocks or in craters. Then they fired grenades at our position.

And what about us...... Rifles, machine guns, etc., simply cannot suppress them against them. Bullets can only hit straight lines, and the more devils hide in the bunker and don't even shoot grenades, then no matter how good our marksmanship is, we can't hit them.

But fortunately, these grenades are within 100 meters of us, and some of them are even 70 or 80 meters away...... At this distance, it is within the throwing range of our grenades, although some of the people in our synthetic battalion can only throw grenades for more than 50 meters, but now we are at a low place no matter how high the enemy is, so with the strength of more than 50 meters, we can also get the devil.

Therefore, the grenade launcher of the Yue Devil was quickly blown up by us, and the few Yue Devils who used the grenade launcher did not dare to continue to fight later.

I was wondering at the time. The maximum range of this M79 grenade launcher is four hundred meters, isn't it? Why did the Yue devils approach within 100 meters of our army's position in such a dangerous way, it is conceivable that if they were a little farther away...... For example, if we are a hundred meters away, then we can only call mortars to deal with them.

Later, I learned that this more devil is actually unacceptable.

You must know that these M79s are left over from the era of the US-Vietnam War, they are not new things, you must know that the US-Vietnam War ended in 75 years, that is, these equipment have been ten years to say the least, and Vietnam is very wet, and the weapons and equipment are easy to rust, so these grenade launchers have been greatly reduced in terms of range, accuracy and reliability in the past ten years.

On the other hand, the range of 400 meters also refers to the longest range on flat ground. And now the Vietnamese army is going to fight at a low place against us, who are located at a high place...... Therefore, it is really not possible to enter within 100 meters, and at a distance of 100 meters, you will not be able to reach the position of our army, but will hit your own people who are charging.

I couldn't help but be secretly glad to know this from the Vietnamese prisoners. If it weren't for these reasons, which affected the range of these grenade launchers, our army would not know how many more casualties would have been incurred in this battle.

I'm not very worried if the battle continues like this, after all, the general attack time is only a little over an hour away, and with the strength of our synthetic battalion, it will not be a problem to hold on to this hilltop position for more than an hour.

I am a little worried that the Vietnamese army will send more mortars to bombard the 1142 hilltop position, but that is also a suicide bombing, and the Vietnamese army may not have fewer casualties than us.

Another point is the problem of ammunition, although we have prepared two bases of ammunition this time because of the Black Hawk, but under the continuous attack of the Vietnamese army, the consumption rate of our ammunition is also quite amazing.

I estimated that if I continued to fight like this, I was afraid that I would run out of ammunition in another half an hour.

But this is just a little worry, first of all, the Yue devil does not have so many troops for us to fight...... The reason why we consume a lot of ammunition now is entirely because the Vietnamese devils launched an intensive charge against our army, and in less than half an hour, more than 50 corpses of Vietnamese soldiers lay in front of the position.

According to this calculation, if we continue to fight like this, although our bullets are almost finished after half an hour, there are only two companies on the 1142 heights of the Vietnamese army, plus two companies that came to reinforce us, we will have to kill more than half, not to mention that we can also call in artillery fire to repel the charge of the Vietnamese army, so as to save some ammunition.

Another reason why I'm not worried about running out of ammunition is that we really can't afford to have helicopters provide us with fire cover and drop some ammunition. Although the threat of the Sam-7 anti-aircraft missile remains, if a dozen helicopters come up under the cover of artillery fire, they will be covered by rockets, and then drop a few boxes of ammunition and turn away...... It's not a problem to fight like this.

Of course, in the process of airdropping, it is very likely that ammunition will be blown into the enemy's position by the wind, after all, this hilltop position is not large, and the mountain wind is tight for a while.

But this problem is not very big, at most it is like the tactic used by the artillery to "cast a wide net to catch small fish", if you throw dozens of boxes of ammunition in one go, there will always be a few boxes of ammunition that will be thrown on our position.

As for the ammunition that drifted into the position of the Vietnamese devils...... Just give it to them.

There is nothing to be sorry for this, you must know that we are short of ammunition and not the Vietnamese army, and the Vietnamese army has enough ammunition on this high ground. So they got those ammunition so to speak, so to speak, it was useless. In the end, after this Yinshan is taken by us, the ammunition will still be returned to us. And we're completely different.

The only regret is ...... We can't complete the mission as planned, destroying the Yinshan Command. That is, all parts of the Vietnamese army on the Yin Mountain will also defend under its effective command. But fortunately, we are also stuck here like a nail on this 1142 height, which can be said to have disrupted the defensive deployment of the Vietnamese army.

However, after a few minutes, my worst fears finally came to mind.

"Battalion commander!" Just as I was directing the soldiers to fight and hurry up the construction of fortifications, the correspondent reported to me: "The radio has been jammed by the Vietnamese army and has lost contact with the division headquarters!" ”

It finally came, and that was my biggest concern, and it was the reason why I had to get off the helicopter and take command myself.

There is no doubt that once contact with the division headquarters is lost, the troops besieged on the hilltop positions become a lone army. A lone army without any synergy to speak of.

In terms of artillery, we could have used snipers to cooperate with artillery fire to block the attack of the Vietnamese troops in the north and on both flanks, but now we can only rely on ourselves, because the artillery that has lost contact with us does not know when the Vietnamese army will come up, so they do not know when to open fire. For the same reason, the two mortar batteries that Division Commander Xu transferred to us could not play a role.

As for the helicopters, it will be very difficult for them to drop ammunition or provide cover, unless Zheng Liangqiang has a close understanding with us and knows that we are short of ammunition and drops a batch of them on his own initiative.

"Battalion commander, it's not a way to fight like this!" After a while, Scar ran up to me. He must have known that communications were being interfered with, so he rushed to talk to me.

Of course I know what Scar means. After being interfered with, because the ground law and artillery are connected, the consumption of ammunition of our army has undoubtedly increased in stages, so the problems that were not a problem before have now become problems, which shows how important communication or electronic warfare is in a war.

"Battalion commander!" Scar thought for a moment and said, "We're next to the Yue Devil Command, and they interfered with our radio signals, so can't their own radio be used?" ”

"Not necessarily!" I said, "They must have laid telephone lines in addition to radio." ”

Scar couldn't help but sigh when he heard this.

As if in conjunction with radio interference, the Vietnamese army once again launched a charge against our troops, so that fierce gunfire rang out again from the position. It's just that this time I heard the gunshot, but it made people feel a little uncomfortable, probably because at this time, I knew that now this bullet is just one less shot.

"How much ammunition is left?" I asked.

"There's still a base number left!" Scar replied, "You can hold on for a while, but it's just ...... If you want to hold out until the general offensive and wait for reinforcements from the 51st Division......"

I don't need to say this further, I understand that an hour later is the time for the general offensive to be launched, and how long will it take for the 51st Division to reach this hilltop position after the general offensive is launched? You must know that there are caves everywhere on this Yin Mountain, and there are more than 1,000 meters above sea level...... Our helicopters came up as soon as they breathed, and the infantry pulled out one by one, and they were still fighting up under the condition that the Vietnamese command system was not paralyzed and all parts were effectively coordinated.

In other words, if we had to wait for reinforcements from the 51st Division, the most optimistic estimate would be a few hours, and by that time our army would have run out of ammunition and food.

However, at this moment, the sound of artillery suddenly sounded in front of the position, and I couldn't help asking: "What's the situation?" ”

"Battalion commander!" The guards looked at it and reported to me: "The charge of the Yue devils has been repelled by our mortar troops!" ”

Scar and I couldn't help but look at each other...... How did the mortar unit know that the Vietnamese army was charging at us at this time and beat it down in time?!

"Radio on?" I asked the correspondent: "Is the radio station broken?" ”

The first thing that came to my mind was whether the Yue Devils did not carry out radio interference, but that our radio station was blown up.

But the correspondent checked it and replied in the affirmative: "The radio station is fine, it is interfered with." ”

Scar also replied in the affirmative: "Even our radio station was interfered with. ”

So it was determined that the Vietnamese army had indeed interfered, but how the mortar company would know that there was a situation that needed to be covered by their artillery fire at this time made us puzzled.

Later, I found out that in fact, the mortar troops did not know, they were just guessing and fighting...... According to them, that is, since the radio jammed and the synthetic battalion have lost contact, then they have nothing to do anyway, and then calculate the frequency of the attack of the more devils before, guess that the more devils are almost charging again at this time, so according to the previous coordinates it is a cannonball.

Moreover, the commander of the mortar battalion named Wu Ning also decided to shoot a cannon at unequal intervals in the future, so that even if he couldn't hit the devils, he could scare them and provide cover for the synthetic battalion as much as possible.

When I heard this afterwards, I almost didn't hug the commander of the mortar battalion and kiss the two of them, because this bought us a long time for the synthetic battalion, and on the other hand, it put a lot of pressure on the Yue devils.

One of the reasons why this will put pressure on the Yue Devils is that the Yue Devils can't understand how the mortars of the Chinese army can still provide cover. On the other hand, because there would be a burst of artillery fire at every turn in front of this position, and the time was still uncertain, sometimes every ten minutes, sometimes only two minutes later, and even a few incendiary bombs came from time to time, only to blow up a sea of fire at the front of our army's position, and suddenly created a situation in which the enemy was open and we were in the dark.

This made the charging Vietnamese soldiers numb...... Is it better to rush or not? What if it rushes up and another artillery comes up?!

The advantage of artillery is here, which is a bit similar to the previous battle fought by our army in the direction of Laoshan, where artillery blew up a wall of fire to provide cover for the first-line infantry.

Of course, this must be supported by enough shells, and it just so happens that our army is preparing to launch a general attack on Zheyin Mountain, so enough shells have been stored during this time.

However, it is clear that the fire assistance provided to us by the mortar battery alone is not enough, because the Vietnamese devils are not fools, and they soon find out that our mortars are just blindly bombing according to the coordinates...... It is not difficult to detect this, and the fact that there is no Vietnamese charge on the position and the shelling continues, which is very telling.

As a result, the Vietnamese army quickly shifted the direction of their main attack. (To be continued......)
