Chapter 97: The Falklands War (16)
Mortars are indeed not a problem, as Major Will said.
One is because we don't have a lot of people, only 133 people in total, plus the Chinese advisory group is only 140 people, even if we arrange a mortar for every two people, it is only about 70 mortars.
In fact, Major Will did arrange a mortar for each of us, and according to Major Will, it was to familiarize them with the mortars, and on the other hand, if the company was training the mobile guns to facilitate the training of other British troops, it was necessary to do so...... Only by doing so can it be possible to simulate a large number of guerrillas!
Even Major Will sent a logistics unit to supply us in order to free up our hands for training, so our company soon had vehicles and jeeps to transport artillery shells.
Another reason is that the island of South Georgia where we are located is in fact an ammunition depot.
As mentioned earlier, the British task force used this small island as an outpost, that is, a considerable part of all kinds of ammunition, guns to be replaced, and supplies were temporarily stored on this island.
Of course, the British army was not so stupid, and would store all the equipment and supplies on this island, otherwise if it was to be used urgently, it would have to be hurriedly loaded from this island and transported to the direction of the Falklands. The solution to this problem is simple: the combat fleet will be accompanied by some supply ships, which are more or less a transit platform...... The fleet would transfer supplies from supply ships, and some small ships would transport supplies from South Georgia to supply ships, thus forming a complete logistical supply system.
These are naturally not what we need to care about. All we need to know is that South Georgia is actually the easiest and most convenient place to get weapons and ammunition at this time. It's no wonder that Major Will said yes without thinking when I said I needed mortars.
Another thing that is needed is communication equipment...... In other words, this communication equipment is still quite important for guerrilla warfare. The reason is that guerrilla warfare is to disperse personnel, and in most cases these personnel are still invisible to each other, so in order for them to be able to cooperate with each other, it is necessary to use communication equipment to string this part together, otherwise it is tantamount to a plate of scattered sand.
From this point of view, sometimes I really don't understand how our troops worked together in guerrilla warfare when we were still in the Red Army.
I think it is very likely that they relied on the tacit understanding between them, the correspondents who were familiar with the terrain, and the cooperation of the people...... For example, people put down a certain tree in the mountains or how often they shook a certain tree to transmit messages or orders to other troops.
I heard a lot of stories like this when I was a kid, and I thought it was funny at the time, but now when I'm on the battlefield, I realize how dangerous it is to use these delivery methods...... What if something goes wrong in the process of transmitting the information or the information is not delivered in time? That would undoubtedly be devastating for the entire force and for the operation.
But that doesn't happen to us. The communication equipment of the British army was originally popularized to the platoon level, and this may be due to the economic recession in Britain at this time, and I think the Yankee troops have long been popularized to the squad.
Of course, if our company wants to conduct guerrilla warfare training, it will only be a matter of adding a dozen sets of communication equipment to the troops, which is not worth mentioning to Major Weir at all.
So the training began quickly, and my training requirements for the troops were to be able to hit the same target as quickly as possible in different places.
This is determined by guerrilla warfare, just like the Yue devils did on the battlefield, but the mobile guns scattered all over the place can accurately point the muzzle at the same high ground.
The advantage of this tactic is obvious, that is, the gunners are scattered. And the shells are concentrated.
The dispersion of the gunners meant that it was difficult for the enemy to suppress them...... The shells were coming from all directions, even if the enemy accurately grasped one or two of the firing positions and spread the artillery fire as quickly as possible. But that would only annihilate a small part.
Concentrated shells mean a better chance of hitting the target.
Mortars can even be said to have a low hit rate for most artillery, one because the accuracy is not high, and the other is because the shells have to fly a long distance, and in the process they will inevitably be affected by air density, wind, etc.
It is precisely because of this that realistic artillery battles are usually covered over a large area, and sometimes test firing is carried out before the coverage.
So if only one or two shells are pointed at one target, the probability of hitting the target can be said to be very small, but if dozens of mortars hit the same target, the effect is completely different.
We used the same method on the battlefield in Afghanistan, and the Soviet army, equipped with advanced fighter jets and helicopter gunships, could do nothing against us.
When I said this, Major Will couldn't help nodding his head frequently, and sighed: "If the Argentine troops do the same, then our troops will not be able to move an inch on the Falklands!" ”
Major Weir did have a point in saying this, you must know that the British troops are quite mechanized, which means that the British army is very dependent on roads, and the Argentine troops will do the same...... That is, to disperse the mortarmen on the various heights of the Falklands and then lock the roads of the Falklands, just waiting for the British to open these roads, it will be difficult, then these British Yankees will be comfortable.
At that time, I think that even if the British army fully grasps the sea and air supremacy, it will be useless, because it will take a long time for the fighters to clear these swimming targets one by one, and Britain will have to end the war in a short period of time because there is no supply line, which is too long and too expensive.
"There's a problem here!" Major Will said: "These mortar gunners can't carry around so much ammunition and move quickly, after all, mortar shells are not light!" ”
Major Will's words are indeed good, even if a mortar shell of 6omm caliber weighs eight pounds, how many mortars and shells can a person in that squad carry? They could not use cars or jeeps to carry them in guerrilla warfare, which was undoubtedly a good target for enemy helicopters or fighters.
However, this is not a problem for me at all.
"Major Will forgot a little!" I said, "Aren't you snipers always hiding ammunition at a sniper spot?" ”
"Oh, I see!" Major Will nodded: "You mean, mortars can also use the same method, burying shells somewhere beforehand!" ”
"Yes!" I said: "That means they don't need to carry shells at all, and they can even carry automatic rifles on their bodies for self-defense, and they can split the mortars to a few people on their backs, and fast maneuvering is not a problem at all!" ”
From this point of view, it is true that the British troops did not have much experience in guerrilla warfare, or that they were more conservative in their thinking, otherwise they would not have asked this question.
This is just my personal opinion about the fact that the British are more conservative in their thinking.
I see it this way, the British and the Americans are actually of the same race, and it can even be said that most of the Americans are immigrants from the United Kingdom, and it is a part of the British who are full of adventurous spirit and pioneering spirit to open up territory in the United States, and finally after the ** war, there is the United States.
Then the part of the British who stayed in Britain was the one who did not have the courage or the passion to go to the United States and create a new world.
Of course, this is the majority, and it does not mean that there are no individual cases.
From this point of view, it is no wonder that the United States has risen up to replace Britain, the former empire.
For example, in modern military affairs, tanks all over the world are deploying smoothbore guns, but Britain stubbornly uses rifled guns and finally makes it fall into a chicken-like trap:
Let's continue to develop the rifled gun, not to mention the huge cost, no matter how much you toss, you can't toss it to the long life of the smoothbore gun, and the performance of the smoothbore gun is better than that of the rifled gun in all aspects after the tail wing is stable and the shelled armor is ejected. If you don't develop rifled guns, it will not only mean giving up all the research experience of rifled guns, but also the research costs of the past will undoubtedly be wasted, and you will have to start from scratch in the exhibition of smoothbore guns......
It is worth mentioning that India's Arjun tank still follows its suzerain, that is, it still uses rifled guns.
There was silence for a long time before Major Will frowned and said, "If this really happens to the Falklands, I mean what if...... So how do we do that? ”
Major Weir was a good question, because the British did not do this to practice guerrilla warfare, but to deal with it.
"The Major remembers the blitzkrieg used by Germany in World War II!" I say.
"Of course I do!" Major Will replied, "What do you mean...... Blitzkrieg against guerrilla warfare? ”
"Almost!" I said: "The reason why the German armored forces were able to advance quickly was entirely because before the armored forces, there was an elite unit with the cooperation of the air force to occupy strategic points or commanding heights along the way, that is, to insert into the enemy's line in advance to ensure the safety of the line of communication, and only in this way could the main force advance along the way."
In fact, the Soviets used this method to secure their logistical supply lines on the battlefield in Afghanistan, which caused great difficulties for our guerrilla warfare! ”
"Oh!" Major Will nodded, "We can do this!" ”
Of course, I believe that the British army can do this, because the British are not all rookies this time, there is also a well-trained special forces, and I even know that this is the one who took South Georgia with zero casualties.
Of course, the British did not need to use this force at all in order to take South Georgia, which also showed the cautious or perhaps unconfident side of the British.
And all of these are not what I care about, what I care about is still five words...... Argentine submarines! (To be continued!)
