Chapter Seventy-Four: Death and the Three Brothers (Part 2)
Overall, Newt has dedicated his life to the conservation of magical beasts.
He believes that wizards should protect magical beasts, and more importantly, live in peace with intelligent species that are classified as "humans".
He has also been fighting for this goal all his life.
For this kind of person who has dreams and actions, William generally admires it.
He hesitated for a moment, then quickly recounted what he had seen beneath the Black Lake.
Newt is an expert on this, and he should be able to answer William's confusion.
"The sacrifices you saw in the merfolk tribe, I have seen before." Newt explained.
"In fact, not only mermaids, but almost all intelligent creatures have sacrifices in the tribes.
Humans also sacrificed in ancient times, and when they gained some kind of power, they produced the first powerful warlocks.
This is the predecessor of some wizards. β
"Partially?" William noticed Newt's choice of words.
"That's right, not all wizards' powers come from sacrifices." Newt hesitated, "Kid, this isn't my field, Professor Dumbledore has more research on it. β
Newt clearly doesn't want to talk too much about that.
"The Priest opens the entrance to a special realm by performing the appropriate magical steps.
The invisible power exists there, just like the human being, which has many forms, both good and evil.
There are forces of light that heal, guard, and search the universe, and there are forces of darkness that go against them...... Bring destruction and chaos.
If the sacrifice is done properly, the invisible force will obey the prayers of the sacrificer and exert its power in the world...... In this way, the worshippers seem to have infinite power.
In return, this power requires sacrificesβprayers and praises to the power of light...... For the dark forces, it requires blood and even life. β
"The merfolk...... To whom are you sacrificing? β
"I think it's the Siren, and the first merfolk." Newt muttered, "You should have seen that mermaid statue, right?" β
William and Hermione nodded hurriedly.
"That statue is the legendary siren, I have seen statues of sirens in all mermaid tribes in the world."
"Isn't the Siren a mythical story?" Hermione skeptical, "In Muggle stories, there are legends about sirens as well. β
"Story?" Newt shrugged, "Kid, I don't think so. β
"The simplest example, Muggles in the Himalayas, where snowmen are often seen, and the legend of the Loch Ness Monster is also becoming more and more popular among Muggles.
For Muggles, the Yeti and the Monster were just legendary creatures, but for wizards, the Yeti and the Horse-shaped Monster were magical creatures that were constantly taught.
They like to be in the limelight in front of Muggles, deliberately drawing their attention. β
"But...... It's not the same. β
"It's no different, wizards are a story to Muggles, just like Merlin and King Arthur."
Newt tilted his head and looked at the sea of clouds.
"A lot of stories evolve from facts. It's just that in the circulation of later generations, it is constantly distorted, exaggerated, and even mixed with other stories.
But that doesn't mean there really isn't. β
William raised an eyebrow, something like that he had heard from Dumbledore.
"Is there any evidence?" Hermione was skeptical.
Newt laughed, "I've traveled all over the world over the years, seen too many magical creatures, and collected countless first-hand information.
Even if you're interested, I think I'll have to spend an academic year explaining it to both of you. β
"We'd love to take your lesson on protecting magical beasts." William laughed.
"Spare me, boy. I'm retired, and Professor Kettleburn is excellent. β
After Newt got acquainted with a few people, he talked more.
"Actually, I want to prove that in the simplest way, all merfolk know about the sirens, even if they have been enclosed in a lake for thousands of years.
Isn't that interesting? β
William and Hermione both listened intently.
Newt continued: "There was one more thing I found in my investigation.
Every merfolk devoutly believes that there is an island in the distant sea, inhabited by Sirens who sing magic songs.
Her singing leads ghosts into the underworld.
The sirens are the guides of the underworld and the most faithful servants of death. β
"Death?" William frowned slightly.
"Is it the Grim Reaper of the Three Brothers?"
Mercury, the elf who had been listening to the story next to him, suddenly asked.
"That's right, it's him!" Newt's eyes were extremely serious.
"Wait, three brothers...... Isn't that just a story? The more William listened, the more confused he became.
If, according to Newt, the sirens really existed, William would still be able to understand them.
He had seen the power of the phoenix, and the siren might be a powerful mermaid.
But suddenly it comes to the underworld and death...... This is as nonsense as "I, Qin Shi Huang, playing money".
"What are the three brothers?" Hermione was even more puzzled, she hadn't even heard of it.
"A bedtime story from The Poet's Tales of Bean." William explained.
"Why haven't I heard of it!" Hermione looked at William in surprise.
"This is an old story in the wizarding world, it is said that it was all written by Old Bedou, and every little wizard knows it."
"How do you know?" Hermione wondered.
"The wizarding storybook I bought for Anne, when school wasn't in school before, she used to pester me at night to read her bedtime stories." William explained.
"What's the story of the three brothers?"
William coughed and said, "Once upon a time, there were three brothers hurrying on a secluded sheep intestine path, and it was nearly dusk.
As they walked, they came to a river, the water was too deep to wade through, and it was too dangerous to swim through.
However, the three brothers are proficient in magic, and with a wave of their wand, a bridge appears over the wide water. As they reached the middle of the bridge, a hooded figure blocked their way.
Standing in the way is the Grim Reaper, who is angry because of the loss of three new sacrifices, which travelers usually drown in the river.
But the Grim Reaper is cunning, and he pretends to congratulate the three brothers on their magic, saying that they have escaped the Grim Reaper by being clever and that they can each receive a reward.
The Boss is a belligerent wizard who wants the most powerful wand in the world!
The Grim Reaper walked over to an elderberry tree on the shore and made a wand out of a dangling branch and gave it to the Boss.
What the second child wants is the ability to resurrect the dead. Death picked up a stone from the shore and gave it to the second child, telling him that it had the ability to bring the dead back to life.
The Grim Reaper asks the youngest for what he wants, and the third is the most humble and intelligent, so he asks for something that will get him out of there without being followed by the Grim Reaper.
Death reluctantly gave him his cloak of invisibility. β
William soon finished telling the story of the Grim Reaper and the three brothers.
"In the end, the other two brothers died, and only the third child avoided the sight of death and lived until he was very old, when he finally took off the cloak of invisibility and gave it to his son, and then greeted the god of death like an old friend."
"It's just a fairy tale," Hermione began to support William's assertion. "There can be no ...... death"
"Wait." Mercury interrupted abruptly.
"I heard my great-grandfather tell me about the story of the Grim Reaper and the three brothers, but it's a different version.
The content is completely different from that of Lao Bidou! β
Mercury's words took William by surprise.
Is there a new version of this bedtime story?
