From the moment of the fall of Western Poland, the Politburo and the Military Commission entered a state of high speed, and the most stressful of them was the Chief of the General Staff Yegorov, who was tasked with formulating an overall battle plan, and how to fight this war was all up to his work.
At the very beginning, in accordance with the spirit of the Politburo, Yegorov formulated the No. 1 plan, the core idea of which was to take the initiative to attack, when it was detected that the German army was trying to invade East Prussia and East Poland, the Moscow Military District of the Red Army would immediately mobilize the Baltic Front, the Belarusian Front, and the Ukrainian Front to attack on all fronts, enter East Prussia and East Poland, and assist the armies of the two countries in annihilating the invading enemy.
However, the No. 1 battle plan died miserably because Tukhachevsky, who represented Trotsky, Li Xiaofeng, who represented Sverdlov, and Frunze, who was neutral, did not like this plan.
Tukhachevsky thought that this plan was too ambitious, so why wait until the Germans were sure to invade East Prussia and East Poland. This is tantamount to a head-on collision, and even if you win, you will probably have to pay a heavy price.
Tukhachevsky believes that it is necessary to take advantage of the fact that the German army is still trapped on the Western Front, with the Baltic Front, the Belarusian Front, and the Ukrainian Front as the main attack, and the Leningrad Front, Moscow Front, and Arkhangelsk Front as the second echelon, plus the Central Front as a reserve, which can penetrate Berlin with overwhelming momentum, occupy Germany in one go, and end the war as quickly as possible.
It can be seen that Tukhachevsky still wants to engage in a large-depth operation, and is ready to replace defense with offense. Objectively speaking, there is some truth. It's better to go to the enemy's house than to fight in your own home, isn't it?
The problem is that things are not that simple. Tukhachevsky's theory of large-depth operations has always been problematic. Moreover, objectively speaking, the Red Army did not have the basis for implementing the theory, for example, as mentioned earlier, the preparation in all aspects was inadequate. Wave after wave of offensives like Tukhachevsky's planning just looks good, and there will be a whole lot of problems for the Red Army to really do it.
For example, judging from the basic principles of the Red Army at present, such a complicated offensive plan may be chaotic as soon as it is implemented. And according to Tukhachevsky's plan, the task of the second echelon is heavy. Shouldering the heavy task of developing, expanding, and annihilating the enemy, the second echelon is overtaking the first echelon to conduct in-depth operations, and a large number of troops are crowded in the narrow battlefield, and I am afraid that the second echelon and the first echelon will immediately become a mess.
According to the statistics of the General Armament Department, the Red Army is facing a huge shortage of communications equipment due to its emergency expansion, and only 25 percent of its troops are able to meet the requirements of the Central Military Commission, while the rest are either outdated in equipment or lack qualified signal troops, or are still waiting for military factories to produce equipment.
Such inferior communication capabilities. It is simply not enough to guarantee the kind of operation that Tukhachevsky demanded. And all the more, at Tukhachevsky's request. The Red Army also had to fight side by side with East Prussia and East Poland, and the coordination of the three armies was also a big problem!
The Soviet Union had just declared its neutrality and would not participate in the imperialist war, and it had deliberately instituted a three-country "defense" treaty, which was almost tantamount to announcing to the whole world that every action of the Soviet Union was defensive in nature, and that it was politically problematic to attack first.
Of course, those in the mixed political arena are all two-skinned, and I don't know how many things I have done without discipline. For the sake of national interests, what is a little bit of fame? Neither Trotsky nor Sverdlov cared about this bit of fame, what really cared about them was political interests.
Tukhachevsky's vigorous advocacy of the initiative to attack was not only due to his theory of large-depth warfare, but more importantly in Trotsky's interests. Fundamentally, Trotsky wanted to bring about a Triple Alliance against Germany, and even though Britain and France repeatedly showed no sincerity, he was still a little unwilling.
The reason is also very simple, who let Sverdlov rob him of his theory of the world revolution? If he follows Xiao Si's established policy and line, Lao Tuo may be very disadvantaged. So Lao Tuo must find a way to get back into this game.
In Lao To's view, once Germany moved westward, Britain and France could no longer and could not embarrass the Soviet Union with harsh conditions. At that time, there was no longer a single obstacle to the Triple Alliance. At this time, he proposed that the Triple Alliance destroy the Nazis as quickly as possible, which was feasible.
That's why Trotsky instructed Khachevsky to emphasize the initiative to attack, which is to think about turning the tables!
But Sverdlov is different, he is preparing for a world revolution, so who is the biggest obstacle to the development of the world revolution at this stage? Britain and France, naturally with vested interests of imperialism. They control most of the world, and if they want to subvert their control of the world, they must first weaken their strength, and preferably collapse them.
Obviously, the Germans now seem to have this intention, as long as they move westward, whether they win or lose, they will consume the strength of Britain and France. Sverdlov was naturally happy to see it happen. If, however, as Trotsky had envisaged, Germany had just gone to trouble Britain and France, the Soviet Union would have taken the back route and forced Germany into an unfavorable situation of fighting on two fronts, and it would inevitably not be able to deal a heavy blow to the forces of Britain and France.
Therefore, Sverdlov's idea was to let Britain, France and Germany fight in the nest, and the more fierce and bloody the fight, the better, and when they are almost consumed, it will not be too late for our Soviet Union to play.
So which is better, Trotsky or Sverdlov's scheme? It's hard to say, objectively speaking, there are disadvantages and advantages. It was indeed possible to end the war and eliminate the Nazis as early as Trotsky did. But what about after the victory over Germany? Will Britain and France accept the Soviet Union? Will the USSR be allowed to grow and grow? I'm afraid this is just a dream.
At that time, the strength of Britain and France still existed, and the ability to control the world may have been improved because of the elimination of Germany, what was the matter with the Soviet Union at that time?
The same Sverdlov method was also problematic, and letting Germany go to Britain and France was certainly a means for the fisherman to profit. But think about it. If Germany really gets Britain and France. Even if France is only like in history, its strength will be unprecedentedly inflated, and it is difficult to say whether the historical Barbarossa will repeat itself.
In other words, Xiao Si's plan is militarily risky, and if it is not done well, it will be like playing with fire and self-immolation like the iron comrades in history. Looking back at Yegorov's No. 1 plan, at this time everyone can see how difficult it is for him, Lao Ye's plan is actually a mud, trying to use a compromise to satisfy both Trotsky and Sverdlov, but what Yegorov did not expect is. His painstaking efforts were in the end considered by Trotsky and Sverdlov to be riding the wall, and naturally it was very boring!
Plan No. 1 was rejected, it was sent back and redone, and poor Egorov became a rat in the bellows, angry at both ends. And what's worse is that he can't pick a son when he is angry, so he can only grit his teeth and continue to communicate and slowly revise.
In the following month, Yegorov came up with two more plans, the second and third plans, but the result was the same. It was rejected by the Military Commission. By January 1940, when Yegorov's plans No. 4 and No. 5 were also rejected. He finally couldn't take it anymore.
The post of Chief of the General Staff was probably the most emaciated period for Egorov in the past few years, first of all, he had to find a balance between Stalin and Sverdlov, and when Stalin retired, he had to find a balance before Trotsky and Sverdlov, who were even more difficult to reconcile. To put it bluntly, he, the chief of the General Staff, deserves that heart, and even he feels that his military quality has not improved much in recent years, but his eloquence and ability to talk nonsense have improved by leaps and bounds.
Tired and unable to think of how to bridge the huge gap between Trotsky and Sverdlov, Egorov barely held out until the end of February, and at the congress in early March, he submitted his resignation.
In the past, Egorov's resignation would have caused an uproar, but this time, both Trotsky and Sverdlov felt that Egorov's resignation was a good thing. First of all, in the past few months, Yegorov has hardly achieved anything worth mentioning, and he has not been able to come up with a programmatic thing, and he has always ridden the wall between offense and defense. This displeased both Trotsky and Sverdlov.
Time was pressing, and judging from the information received by the intelligence system, the Germans were intensively planning an attack on France, and an attack could be launched at any time. And now, the General Staff does not even have a plan of response, and when Germany really attacks France, what should it do? Doesn't this affect the preparation for war?
As a result, Yegorov left the General Staff in gloom and went to the Central Asian Military District, one of the five major military districts, to take up his post as commander. To tell the truth, the Central Asian Military Region is said to be a large military region, and the area it is responsible for is also very vast, but it is an out-and-out cold bench.
Obviously, there was no threat to the Soviet Union in the Central Asian direction, it can be said that the battlefield here is quiet, and the work of a huge Central Asian military district is to suppress bandits, and the main task is to eliminate those ethnic separatists.
It can be said that it is overkill to let Yegorov, one of the five dignified generalissimos, do such a small errand. To put it bluntly, this is a knock on the change of direction, and it is a manifestation of the Politburo's dissatisfaction with it. Otherwise, with Yegorov's qualifications and abilities, he should at least go to the Crimean-Caucasus Military District.
So who succeeded Yegorov as Chief of the General Staff? Tukhachevsky, it took five years, Tukhachevsky is back, and it seems to be even more awesome than before, he is not only the chief of the General Staff, but also the People's Commissar of Defense, so to speak, serfs turned over and sang.
At least that's what Tukhachevsky himself thinks, and he feels that he can finally make a big show again, and he can wash away his shame. He can't wait to show his strength and get ready to do a big job.
The new congress has not been in place for three days, and at the regular meeting of the Central Military Commission, he came up with his own red plan. The plan was imbued with Tukhachevsky's personal imprint and brought the offensive idea to the fullest. In any case, Trotsky was not at ease with this plan.
Tukhachevsky was happy, Trotsky was also satisfied, was the dust settled as soon as it was a qiē?
It's not that simple, Sverdlov occupies the vast majority of the fifteen positions in the Military Commission, and to deny Tukhachevsky's plan is as simple as playing. So as soon as DUANG was born, Tukhachevsky's head was hit with a brick, and the red plan was rejected!
This turn of the head was a little too hard. So much so that Tukhachevsky was stunned. Obviously, he easily turned over. It also combines the chief of the general staff and the people's commissar of national defense, and no matter how you look at it, it looks like you are in power. But why did you turn your head?
It can only be said that Tukhachevsky and Trotsky were a little careless, and the position of chief of the General Staff was taken by Xiao Si's influence in the Military Commission. The reason why it was not taken was very simple, at this time, whoever was the chief of the General Staff could not please him, so he replaced Ubolevich on Xiao Si's side as the chief of the General Staff, and put forward a combat plan that favored Xiao Si. What will be the result? It will certainly be strongly opposed by Trotsky, and although Lao Toll is a minority in the CMC, he is not a minority in the Politburo, and it is in vain that the Politburo does not approve of the CMC's proposal.
And it must be noted that Germany was actively preparing for an invasion of France, and according to intelligence, the Germans would inevitably do so by July at the latest. And at this time, preparations for the USSR had just begun. Moreover, the Trotsky and Sverdlov factions were still arguing endlessly, and could not come up with a plan that would satisfy both sides. In this case, as soon as Germany invaded France. The USSR simply could not react. In other words, in the end, this black cauldron must be carried by the Chief of the General Staff!
Neither Li Xiaofeng nor Sverdlov has any intention of letting others carry the blame, since Tukhachevsky jumps up and down to carry the black pot, let him carry it. Moreover, there is another advantage to having Tukhachevsky take over the General Staff, and in the future it has become customary for the Chief of the General Staff to concurrently serve as the People's Commissar of Defense. When Xiao Si and Li Xiaofeng's people take over the General Staff, wouldn't it be beautiful to take over the People's Commissariat of National Defense again.
Anyway, Sverdlov and Li Xiaofeng had already discussed that before the German invasion of France, Tukhachevsky would be vetoed as long as he dared to put forward any initiative to attack. When it dragged on to Germany and France, Trotsky's line would be self-defeating.
Poor Trotsky and Tukhachevsky stupidly stepped into the trap set by Sverdlov and Li Xiaofeng, and were pitted quite miserably.
From March to April, Tukhachevsky came up with countless schemes, using all the colors all over again, and even came up with such a strange scheme as Purple 15. But no matter how he changed it, the plan just couldn't work, and he was so anxious that he was one head or two years old, and his kung fu in just two months was like ten years old.
Many years later, when Tukhachevsky recalled those years of hard work, he still couldn't help but get angry, and scolded Sverdlov, Li Xiaofeng and others one by one in his memoirs. So much so that later French historians wrote with indignation when studying this period of history: "It is not difficult to see from the memoirs of Marshal Tukhachevsky that when France was invaded by the Nazis, the Soviet Union was capable of attacking and defeating the Nazis from behind, and judging from those various battle plans, if the Soviet Union really did that, this cruel world war would have ended in 1940!" And the great France will not suffer the disgrace of its country! ”
In the opinion of this historian, France is solely responsible for the defeat of the USSR, as if the USSR owed France. Of course, his conclusion is quite good, for example, the British directly said: "The reason why the Soviet Union chose to watch from the wall is entirely out of the psychology of sitting on the mountain and watching the tiger fight and preparing for the profit of the fisherman." Judging from what happened later, we cannot but wonder if the rise of the Nazis was a conspiracy of the Soviet Union. As we all know, throughout the twenties, relations between the USSR and Germany were quite good, and the two sides cooperated extensively economically and militarily, was it not at that time that the evil polar bear injected the ignorant Hans with evil genes and lured Hans on a road of no return? ”
Anyway, conspiracy theories like this are endless, as if the Soviet Union was behind the outbreak of World War II.
Let's not talk about these strange theories, but return to the story itself. After entering April, Trotsky suddenly realized that after a long time of trouble, the Chief of the General Staff was a pit, and he stupidly jumped in.
However, Lao Tuo was not easy to get along with, and he immediately instructed Tukhachevsky to take targeted measures, and at the regular meeting of the Military Commission that followed, Tukhachevsky abruptly strengthened his tone, declaring that a reasonable plan must be reached immediately, and that there would be no way to carry out the work of war preparations after such endless delays.
He even threatened the Military Commission, not understanding his plan, if there was an accident in France and the Red Army could not respond immediately, the responsibility would lie with the Military Commission, and in the end he would have to threaten him, and he could only resign if necessary!
Trotsky was prepared to force Sverdlov to make concessions, because it was only a matter of time before Germany attacked France. Once Germany invades France, and the Military Commission does not react, he must make a fuss about it!
So what was Sverdlov's answer in the face of Trotsky's threat? You're scared of me, you go and make a fuss! As for Tukhachevsky's threat of resignation, Sverdlov's reply was: "If Tukhachevsky informs that there is no confidence in leading the General Staff, then it is good to resign as soon as possible." This will save a lot of valuable time, and in the past few months under Tukhachevsky, all the work of the General Staff has been stalled, and I think it is necessary to try it with a different comrade! (To be continued......)
