533 New tactics

Leaving aside the Allied armies with their own agendas, it will take time for these grandsons to prepare if they want to attack Szczecin. Let's first go back to the Warsaw battlefield and look at Tukhachevsky's table.

After the second adjustment, Tukhachevsky was finally able to concentrate his superior forces for the annihilation battle, with four divisions responsible for blocking the three American divisions in the north, and the remaining three divisions attacking MacArthur's 42nd Infantry Division with all their might.

Three against one, no matter how you look at MacArthur's situation, it seems that it is only a matter of time before the Rainbow Division is eliminated. However, the real situation is not so ideal, although MacArthur likes to be in the limelight, but he is not a rat who does not deserve the name, he still has real skills.

Especially after he found himself surrounded, he had to fight hard for the sake of his future. Under his personal command and encouragement, all the officers and men of the Rainbow Division resisted every inch of land and repelled the siege of the Belarusian Front again and again, which can be said to be quite tenacious.

Not only was the Rainbow Division very tenacious, but the three American divisions in the north were not bad, and in the face of the blocking attack of the four divisions, they dared to fight and almost let the blocking troops of the Belarusian Front out of the ocean.

In this situation, Tukhachevsky finally could not bear it anymore, and he had to hand over the task of blocking the Anglo-French forces to his deputy, and personally command the operation to annihilate the Rainbow Division.

In just half a month, Tukhachevsky has simply changed into a person, the previously handsome and dashing cream boy is gone, and he has become an uncle with a scruffy beard and panda eyes. Tukhachevsky was under a lot of pressure and could no longer be as optimistic as he was before the war. The trench battle made him very nervous, and the Red Army's firepower configuration was really not good at fighting such a battle.

Tukhachevsky finally realized. If you continue to fill it with human life like this. His troops will be crushed into pulp by the flesh millstones of the Entente. In the end, there is no doubt about defeat. In order to break the deadlock, he must come up with new tactics!

Does Tukhachevsky have a new tactic? Yes, I have to admit that this is indeed a military genius, he is very good at summing up lessons and lessons, and immediately begins to think of ways after suffering losses. For example, he soon realized that there was no point in maintaining the Red Army's overwhelming charge tactics, which amounted to death under the call of the enemy's machine guns and artillery.

The formation of the attacking troops had to change to more sparse skirmishers, and each soldier had to make full use of the shelter in the assault sector. Only by constantly covering each other and advancing in a leap forward will it be possible to break through the enemy's defenses.

After a field visit, Tukhachevsky believed that a platoon of 60 men must have a frontal impact width of 300 meters, and a battalion of 600 men must have a frontal impact width of 3,000 meters. Only by maintaining a sufficient distance can you avoid the damage of the enemy's superior firepower.

Some comrades may be surprised, it seems that the war movies seen on TV are not this way, the heroes gather together and start charging with a scream, almost crowding everyone. According to Tukhachevsky's new tactics, the frontal width of a platoon is 300 meters, and the width of a platoon is 900 meters, and a distance of 2 miles is 100 men. It is also necessary to form a ladder-like cover assault posture, which Nima can see people?

It's just right that you can't see people. If people really crowd everyone and everyone is next to each other, isn't that tantamount to telling the enemy's machine gunners to greet them casually? The battlefield is not a movie, there is no aura of God, the killing radius of a grenade is about ten meters, the killing radius of a 60 mortar shell is more than 15 meters, the killing radius of a 3-inch (76 mm) field artillery or mountain artillery is more than 20 meters, and the killing radius of heavy artillery is more than 40 meters.

In fact, Tukhachevsky's proposed impact width was too narrow, and according to the results of later battles and acts, it was reasonable to double the impact width.

However, maintaining a relatively narrow impact width was not Tukhachevsky's mistake, but a no-brainer. In fact, he also knew that this width was still too narrow, but it became a big problem to continue to pull away and direct the battle.

A platoon of fifty to sixty men is scattered on a frontage three hundred meters wide, and even if the platoon commander is in the center, an order will be passed one hundred and fifty meters to both wings. In the noisy battlefield environment, just by the throat roar, that platoon has the voice of a tenor.

This is still at the platoon level, and when it comes to the battalion level, the frontal width is three thousand meters, even if the battalion commander is Pavarotti, it is useless. Under the technical conditions at that time, only heralds could be used, but heralds were also human beings, running back and forth under the enemy's artillery fire, not to mention being tired enough to choke and difficult to save their lives.

That is to say, it was not that the army commanders did not know that the dense formation was dangerous, but that the backward communication equipment limited them, and the frontal width was too large, so there was no way to command it!

Tukhachevsky was undoubtedly lucky, and a certain immortal made the artifact of Serial Communications in World War II SCR-536 (that is, the square box "Big Brother" that can often be seen on the hands of American imperialist soldiers in World War II) appear in advance. As one of Nokia's flagship products, the SCR-536 was "produced" 10,000 units in 1918 and 1919, with a focus on equipping the GRU and the Volunteer Army.

Why are there quotation marks in production? The reason is very simple, although the technical level of SCR-536 is not high from the perspective of later generations, but in this year when no wires have just emerged, this thing is high-tech. At the level at which Nokia could only lay telephone lines, it was simply impossible to do it.

The so-called production is actually Nokia producing a shell, and the core electronic components inside are provided by a certain immortal pass guò cornucopia. To put it bluntly, Nokia is doing a job of processing with supplied materials.

Previously, the SCR-536 was tried on a small scale on the battlefield in Finland, mainly to equip the Red Eagle Regiment. At that time, Tukhachevsky was curious about this kind of square box "phone", but he did not pay much attention to it. Later, during the civil war, Tukhachevsky almost forgot about this communication equipment (for the simple reason that the maximum communication distance of the SCR-536 under ideal conditions was less than five kilometers, which was really useless for the Eastern Front, which could not maneuver for thousands of kilometers at every turn).

It wasn't until during the attack on Poznan that the rocket artillery used the SCR-536 to transmit information efficiently and quickly, and achieved fast running. Tukhachevsky only reacted. This thing is an artifact of positional warfare! For battalion commanders. This little thing conveys the command so appropriately!

So Tukhachevsky unceremoniously made a hand-out party. Let Trotsky help "snatch" hundreds of SCR-536s from a certain immortal and distribute them to the attacking troops. With the help of SCR-536, Tukhachevsky was able to widen the front of his troops' attack, otherwise he would have to pay even more heavy casualties in the next assault.

Of course, SCR-536 alone is not enough, after all, this thing is an auxiliary tool, a combat power amplifier. The specific way to tackle the fortifications depends on tactics and cooperation.

In order to fight the fortified position, Tukhachevsky racked his brains to come up with new tactics, in order to completely change the situation in which the attacking troops were passively beaten. He took two measures: first, to equip the attacking troops with "armored bunkers", which were actually "tortoise shells" stamped into a whole steel plate, so that the attacking troops' forward reconnaissance soldiers could hide behind the tortoise shells to avoid enemy fire on flat terrain; The second is to equip the attacking troops with 37mm infantry guns, which are used to accompany the attack and support the attacking troops to suppress the enemy's fire points at any time and place.

The whole offensive tactic was divided into four steps: the first step was the preparation of artillery fire, and the infantry carrying tortoiseshells advanced when the rocket artillery was pouring bullets with great might; In the second step, after the artillery fire is prepared, the soldiers carrying tortoiseshells will find out the remaining firing points of the enemy and report them to the 37-mm infantry artillery units that cooperate with the operation. destruction of enemy fire points by infantry artillery; In the third step, the infantry began to assault. Under their cover, the 37-mm infantry guns moved forward together; In the fourth part, under the cover of infantry and infantry carrying tortoiseshells, 37-mm infantry guns entered the enemy's positions, used direct fire to suppress and destroy the enemy's machine-gun fire points and field artillery bunkers, and finally achieved the goal of occupying and breaking through.

Tukhachevsky's tactics look like that, it seems that the division of labor is very clear and reasonable, but there are not small problems, many of them are taken for granted by this genius marshal, and all the problems in real battles will be exposed!

The first thing that exposed the problem was the ugly "tortoise shell", and Tukhachevsky's starting point was to strengthen the defense of the front-line reconnaissance troops and prevent them from being killed and wounded in large numbers under enemy fire.

However, in actual use, it was found that although this tortoise shell could nominally withstand the continuous hits of full-powered rifle bullets, this thing was dead, and after carrying such a tortoise shell, the mobility of the reconnaissance unit was instantly reduced to zero.

It was really impossible to run, unable to stand up, and couldn't do any tactical moves, and the armor that was originally issued to reduce casualties led to greater casualties among the soldiers, anyway, for the front-line reconnaissance troops, they really had no love for this turtle shell.

Not only was there a problem with the tortoise shell, but the seemingly good and powerful artillery support tactics also proved to be completely impractical. First of all, the power of the 37mm infantry gun was too small to gnaw at the enemy's strong fortifications, and there are examples of battles that once an artillery squad fired 4 shells in a row at a machine gun fire point could not destroy it, but under the enemy's machine gun killing, more than half of the 9 young men of this artillery squad died, and only the abandoned artillery of the wolf bèi escaped.

Not only is the power small, but the second and more important problem is that although the 37mm infantry gun is light, it is still cumbersome for assault operations. According to the statistics of the first operation, 75% of the artillery squads were killed by enemy fire without entering the gun emplacement during the towing process.

All in all, Tukhachevsky's new tactics proved to be a tragedy from the start. However, Xiaotu was not the slightest bit discouraged, he was also using this to perfect his tactics, as a commander who had not fought trench warfare for a long time, he had to constantly practice and explore to find a feeling.

So did Tukhachevsky find his senses? For the time being, he hasn't completely found it, but he doesn't need to bother looking for it, because Li Xiaofeng has already helped solve his problem. After the last decisive battle with the Poles, Li Xiaofeng, Ubolevich, and Triandafilov got together to sum up the lessons learned, focusing on how to fight positional warfare.

After some research and combined with the results of acting, Li Xiaofeng and the three of them perfected the relevant tactics and strengthened the firepower allocation of the combat engineers dedicated to attacking fortified positions. Previous experience has shown that combat sappers do not need cumbersome full-power rifles. That thing doesn't work at all. Switched to Federov's assault rifles and light machine guns (the PK machine gun also looked bulky).

Of course, the point is not on these two weapons. The most important weapons of combat sappers are flamethrowers, grenade launchers, bazookas, and grenades. Even the weapons and clothing have been improved, and in order to better complete tactical actions such as crawling and rolling, knee pads and elbow pads and tactical chest harness systems have been distributed, and the soldiers are no longer in a state of dick silk with an armed belt fighting all over the world. Even more suitable individual body armor was issued in advance.

Again, this is a change in individual firepower, and more importantly, in support firepower, and the bulky infantry guns have proven to be unable to keep up with assault groups, and they are not powerful enough. In order to better destroy the enemy's fortifications, the accompanying fire of the assault group was solved by 100 mm recoilless guns. And the supporting fire was handed over to howitzers, machine guns and mortars.

The entire combat engineer battalion consisted of 5 assault companies, each with 4 to 5 experienced officers and about 250 soldiers. It also has a machine gun company, each with about 80 soldiers, operating nine PKM machine guns. It also has a flamethrower platoon with 10 flamethrowers.

All that remains is to accompany the artillery and support fire groups. The accompanying artillery battery was armed with six 100-mm recoilless guns, while the supporting fire group was armed with six howitzer machine guns and six 60-mm light artillery guns.

The entire assault group was used in such a way that the first step was artillery preparation, and each assault company on the front could be reinforced with at least one recoilless gun, one mortar, and one PKM heavy machine gun.

After the artillery fire is prepared, each company will send a reconnaissance group to find out the situation of the remaining enemy fire points. About 200 meters behind the reconnaissance unit, there will be a reinforced assault squad reinforced with a grenade machine gun and one or two flamethrowers. A hundred meters behind the assault squad, support units will follow. It is mainly responsible for replenishing ammunition and personnel for assault squads.

The main task of the reinforced assault squad is to intersperse and open breakthroughs, of course, when encountering a particularly strong enemy stronghold, it should be bypassed, and the personnel interval of the entire assault squad will be widened to about 10 meters to reduce fire casualties as much as possible.

The main forces of the combat engineer battalion will follow behind the assault squad, maintaining a distance of about 200 meters. Generally, three companies are deployed on the front line, and the other two companies act as reserves. According to Li Xiaofeng's idea, each of these combat engineer battalions will have at least three, which will be assigned to the front-line attacking troops according to their needs.

However, due to time constraints, after the Battle of Warsaw, he only had time to form a combat engineer regiment with four combat engineer battalions. Two of the battalions were transferred to Tukhachevsky's command.

When Tukhachevsky acquired this unit, he immediately went into battle without saying a word. He wondered if someone's infantry breakthrough tactics were better or worse than his methods.

For the first time, Tukhachevsky threw in only one battalion, and it could be seen that the genius marshal had no bottom, but this time the attack was amazingly good! The combat sappers plunged into the American cheese like a red-hot dagger, and Tukhachevsky was caught off guard when the combat sappers swept away the fortifications and obstacles they encountered on the road, and cut a big hole in MacArthur's carefully constructed defensive line in one fell swoop!

Fortunately, the battlefield of the combat engineers was quite well organized, and the follow-up troops firmly controlled the breakthrough, and in the face of the counterattack of the American soldiers, their powerful firepower taught the Yankees a hard lesson - you should honestly play defense, you haven't started the offensive tactics yet!

Why? The reason is very simple, the Americans entered the war too late, basically following behind the British and French armies to help block the eye, basically fighting a defensive war. They have more experience in defensive warfare. Moreover, objectively speaking, it is easier to defend than to attack, especially for American GIs who do not have much combat experience, as long as they have fighting spirit and morale and are not afraid of death, they can fight a defensive war. Offensive operations, on the other hand, are completely different, requiring extremely high levels of suzhì and very high requirements for officers and soldiers.

Let's put it this way, courage and fighting spirit are the most important in defensive operations, while offensive operations are technical work, not courage alone. Unfortunately, the Americans did not have any advantage in this regard, their offensive organization was a mess and lacked layers, and they were beaten to tears every minute.

At this time, Tukhachevsky regretted it a little, if he had prepared the second echelon earlier, then the results of this breakthrough operation would have been even greater. But it's not too late to know now, anyway, Tukhachevsky is ready to use the rest of the day to plan well, and is ready to fight a beautiful breakthrough battle the next day, cutting off the Americans in one fell swoop!

And just as Tukhachevsky was gearing up for a big fight, a mighty fleet slowly lifted anchor in Scarpa Bay and prepared to leave the anchorage. This formation consisted of more than a dozen battleships and four battlecruisers, and as for the other light cruisers and destroyers, there were even more, and no matter how you look at it, this was a huge naval operation.

In this formidable maritime formation, there were three strange-looking ships that stood out, their flat decks so bare compared to the other friendly ships with their turrets. One of the three carriers was called Fury, one was called the Hundred-Eyed Giant, and the other was called the Eagle (the historical Eagle was halted in December 1918 due to the German surrender and did not resume construction until November 1919).

In the case of the Fury, the Eagle, and the Cyclops, who had been excluded from the operation, it was the head of the Royal Navy's air force who had to work hard to convince them to give them a chance, so could they seize it? (To be continued......)
