326 Tank Gun Controversy(3)

It's no wonder that Tukhachevsky was shocked, the ability to penetrate 140 mm of vertical armor at a distance of a thousand meters is already awesome. Even the ZIS-2, which has a longer diameter and higher muzzle velocity and chamber pressure, barely managed to achieve this effect by using BR-271N armor-piercing shells, which have not yet been mass-produced. How could a D-5 tank gun with lower muzzle velocity and chamber pressure that did not have an APCR shell of the level of BR-271N be possible?

Tukhachevsky had the urge to hit the wall anyway, because the result was really abnormal and unscientific, and to make matters worse, he had no idea how the D-5 did it. What's more, this did not achieve the effect he expected at all, and it did not slap a certain immortal in the face, but there was a possibility of being slapped in the face. What can I do?

Just as Tukhachevsky was anxiously thinking about countermeasures, Li Xiaofeng asked with a smile: "Do you want to continue to compete?" ”

As if he had been stepped on by the tail, Tukhachevsky jumped up and shouted loudly: "Than! The winner hasn't been decided yet, so why not compare! ”

That's better than that! However, the next comparison is a problem, as mentioned earlier, Tukhachevsky thinks that 750 meters can determine the winner and loser, so he is not ready to compete at a distance of 1,000 meters.

After thinking for a moment, he suggested: "1200 meters of target, 120 mm thickness of the target plate......"

However, his suggestion was flatly rejected by Li Xiaofeng. Tukhachevsky sneered: "What, don't dare to compare? ”

Li Xiaofeng shook his head and said: "What does 1200 meters mean, everyone's time is precious, let's go directly to 1500 meters!" ”

Tukhachevsky gasped. Because this distance is really far. Yes. No kidding at all. The distance of 1,500 meters is the normal engagement distance of tanks even in the 21st century, and most tank battles are basically between 1,500 meters and 2,000 meters.

Why? It is likely that many comrades will cite many examples of ultra-long-distance tank battles, but that is really not the norm, and it is greatly affected by the weather and environment. Let's put it this way, during the Cold War, whether it was the NATO bloc or the Warsaw Pact bloc. Tests have shown that the most likely anti-tank artillery battle in Central Europe is between 1,500 and 1,800 meters. Even if the effective range of the artillery is beyond this range, because of the undulating terrain, it is difficult for you to have a chance to see a target at a distance of two thousand meters (not to mention the perennial fog in Central Europe, which has a great impact on sighting). Later, when Britain, which has always emphasized long-range shooting, promoted its 120mm rifled guns, why did Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Denmark not buy it? The reason is that the advantage of firepower on the ultra-long distance of the 120 line cannot be played at all)!

In World War II, the observation and fire control systems were quite primitive, and artillery battles at ultra-long distances were naturally more difficult, so the distance of 1,500 meters was quite challenging for the Red Army armored troops.

Tukhachevsky was stunned for a moment. Then he came back to his senses and said unconvinced: "1500 meters is 1500 meters." Am I still afraid of you? ”

Li Xiaofeng didn't care too much, shrugged his shoulders and said, "That's good." Then he instructed the staff at the shooting range: "Set up two 140 mm thick target plates 1,500 meters away and prepare for ......."

Before Li Xiaofeng could finish speaking, Tukhachevsky interrupted him, and the latter asked in a dog-like manner: "How thick do you say the target plate?" ”

Li Xiaofeng replied lightly: "140 mm? If you think it's too thin, make it thicker to ......"

At this time, Tukhachevsky really couldn't complain, why? Because he thinks that Li Xiaofeng is just shouting and pretending, why does he think so? Because the reason is very simple, 1500 meters to penetrate 140 mm of vertical armor, this armor-piercing ability in the Soviet Union for the time being only one kind of artillery can do, that is, the D-34 tank gun developed from the B10 naval gun.

The D-10S (the gun of the SU-100, which differed little from the D-10T with a tank, and the ammunition was completely universal), had a muzzle velocity of 915 m/s when firing a 15.59 kg RB-412B sub-caliber steel-core armor-piercing projectile, capable of penetrating armor plates with a thickness of 80 mm at a distance of 1500 meters.

Some comrades will soon complain, and they will say that this armor-piercing ability is very average! Far worse than the German 88 and long-barreled 75, and far worse than the 90-pounder guns of the American imperialists, Wagyu Niu, 17-pounder. Please note that the above data lacks an important condition, that is, this 80 mm thick armor is 60 degrees of inclination, check the table to know, COS 60 degrees is 0.5, 80 mm divided by 0.5 is what is 160 mm, this is the real armor-piercing ability of the D-10 series at a distance of 1500 meters.

In fact, this still does not reflect the real anti-armor capabilities of the D-10, as we also need to pay attention to what kind of ammunition it uses. Again, it is nonsense to talk about armor-piercing ability without ammunition.

It was said above that the D-10 used RB-412B sub-caliber steel-core armor-piercing projectiles, and there are two keywords for this ammunition, one is a sub-caliber and the other is a steel-core armor-piercing projectile. And what was the highest level of tank guns at the same time?

For example, the famous Firefly-armed 17-pounder gun, which is capable of penetrating 140 mm (30 degrees) thick double-hardness homogeneous armor at a speed of 884 m/s at a distance of 884 m/s, and 131 mm (30 degrees) thick at a distance of 914 meters. And when using the best British sub-caliber tungsten carbide core shelling armor-piercing projectiles, the muzzle velocity can reach 1190 m/s, penetrating 208 mm (30 degree angle) of dual-hardness homogeneous armor at a distance of 457 meters, and 192 mm (30 degree angle) of double-hardness homogeneous armor at a distance of 914 meters.

There may be comrades who don't like to calculate and still don't know, so translate the above data, 140 mm (30 degrees angle) is equivalent to 161 mm (90 degrees or vertical), 131 mm (30 degrees angle) is equivalent to 151 mm (vertical), and 208 mm (30 degrees angle) is equivalent to 240 mm (vertical). 192 mm (30 degree angle) is equivalent to 221 mm (vertical).

It is likely that there will be another comrade to say. The data you gave for the D-10 is 1500 meters. There is no one-kilometer penetration depth data, how can this be compared? Don't worry, isn't this there, the D-10 armor-piercing data at a distance of 1000 meters with the BR-412B is 185 mm (vertical).

Judging from the comparison of data, the armor-piercing ability of the 17-pounder gun at a distance of 1000 meters is indeed much higher than that of the D-10, especially considering that the 17-pounder gun is 76.2 mm caliber, this gap is getting bigger and bigger.

However, the Soviet artillery designers do not need to be ashamed, because this 17-pounder gun of Niu Niu is indeed very good. It is almost invincible in the same caliber, and even artillery larger than many calibers may as well be conceded. For example, the M390 mm tank gun of the United States imperialism, which ranked first in armor-piercing power in World War II, and the German KWK4371 88 gun, these two are only slightly stronger than the 17-pounder gun.

So why is John Bull's 76.2 mm tank gun so awesome? Not only because this cannon is the crystallization of Niu Niu's fine workmanship, but also because the more critical reason is the armor-piercing bullet used by Niu Niu. Compared with the APCBC (hollow cap-piercing shells, such as the one used by the D-10, in fact, the 17-pounder gun is also the most used), Niu Niu creatively invented the APDS shell, which is a rotational stable shell-piercing projectile using a tungsten carbide core, which is a grade higher than the APCR bullet (tungsten carbide core high-speed armor-piercing projectile) used by the United States and the Soviet Union later.

Let's put it this way, after the APDS ejects the chamber. The stock wrapped around the core is removed, and most of the work done by the gun is concentrated on the core. Therefore, its muzzle velocity is faster and its armor-piercing ability is stronger. The APCR bullet is slightly worse, after the discharge, the butt that wraps the bullet core still flies with the core, its resistance is large, the speed is lower, and the natural armor-piercing power is poor.

In this way, it is clear to everyone that Niuniu's 17-pounder gun can have such a good armor-piercing ability, and good armor-piercing shells are a key reason. Not only a tungsten carbide bullet core is used, but also a shell-piercing projectile. And the Soviet BR-412B is only APCBC (hollow cap-piercing shell), which is two grades lower than Niuniu's APDS in the bomb type, and its bullet core is still a steel core bullet, and the hardness is lower than that of tungsten carbide, even if the caliber is larger, the armor-piercing power is not as good (to put it simply, the development of armor-piercing bullets, the earliest is AP bullets, that is, armor-piercing bullets, and later found that it is easy to ricochet, so a cap was added to change it to APC, that is, a cap-piercing bullet. Later, it was found that this quilt hat had a lot of wind resistance, so a streamlined hood was added to the quilt cap, which is APCBC. Then it was found that in order to improve the energy of armor-piercing bullets, the key is speed and the hardness of the bullet core, so the so-called HVAP was developed, which means high-speed armor-piercing bullets, also called APCR. Later, on the basis of APCR, in order to further increase the speed, a shell-piercing armor-piercing projectile that got rid of the butt-bearing structure that is meaningless for armor-piercing was developed, which is the APDS of Niu Niu).

So the thing is very simple, the D-10 is indeed inferior to the 17-pounder gun of Niuniu when firing APCBC shells, so does the D-10 still have the potential to be enhanced? Obviously, this is true, for example, when the D-10 launches APCR shells, the armor-piercing ability of 1000 meters is about 200 mm, and its armor-piercing ability can be further improved when launching APDS or more awesome APFSDS shells in the future. This is also the main reason why Maozi used the D-10 until the seventies, because the improvement potential of the D-10 is indeed much stronger than that of the 17-pounder gun.

Speaking of which, we have to say one more digression, a tank gun is less than ten or twenty years old, and more than thirty years or even half a century of use is normal (for example, the British L7105), so its improvement potential is very important.

And what are the two aspects of this potential? The first is the caliber, the second is the medicine room. Generally speaking, those with a larger caliber have potential than those with a smaller caliber, and those with a larger pharmacy have potential than those with a smaller pharmacy. From a development point of view, the big ones are more dominant than the small ones. For example, when the rabbit chose the main gun of the third-generation tank, why did he choose the Soviet 125? It's not because rabbits only know how to copy Maozi's ready-made products, or because they can't get Hans's RH120, according to the international environment in the 80s, rabbits are not a big problem to introduce Hans's 120.

But why did the rabbit choose 125 instead of 120 in the NATO system? A very important reason is that the development potential of 125 is indeed greater than that of 120, and 125 is superior in caliber. The pharmacy is also 125 larger. The muzzle kinetic energy of 125 is stronger than that of 120.

Of course. This is not to say that Maozi's 125 is very good and powerful, objectively speaking, Maozi's 125 does have a problem, the large medicine room brings greater muzzle velocity and worsens the life of the body, the cautery is not ordinarily serious, and Maozi's cannonballs are made of water, in a sense, it wastes the power of this cannon.

However, there are two ends of the story, if the 125 is modified with better body tube materials and metallurgy (the rabbit had it back then). And then integrate Western technology to fully optimize the shell, and give full play to the advantages of the high muzzle velocity of the Maozi 2A46, isn't it better? In this case, why bother with the 120, the rabbit has not developed its own 120 tank gun (and two generations), if this caliber is really suitable for the rabbit, why bother to start again?

Having said all this nonsense, to get back to the point, the most powerful tank guns in the USSR were actually the D-10 series (much more powerful than the D-25 series of 122 mm caliber). The D-10 could only penetrate 160 mm of homogeneous armor at a distance of 1,500 meters, and now someone is ashamed to say that the D-5 can penetrate 140 mm or even 150 mm of armor at a distance of 1,500 meters. What is this Nima not bragging?

Anyway, Tukhachevsky is ready to see someone's jokes, and as soon as someone's cowhide is blown up, he will immediately rush up and mercilessly slap him in the face.

A new round of shooting began, the target was still a 140 mm dual-hardness target plate, and the first to complete the shooting was still the T-34-57, of course, it was impossible to penetrate such a large thickness of the target. However, the average penetration depth of 120 mm was achieved by 10 shells. It should be said that it is still very good, at least the marshals and generals present are more satisfied with this figure, this figure represents that the ZIS-2 can get the Tiger tank at a distance of 1500 meters when using BR-271N armor-piercing shells, to be honest, the big guys feel that this is a bit too much.

Anyway, Tukhachevsky is more proud, he looks at Li Xiaofeng with provocative eyes, which means that he will see how embarrassing you are.

So is Li Xiaofeng embarrassed? Surely not, because when the target board that had been shot by the D-5 was placed in front of the marshals and generals, everyone could not help but gasp. Ten shots is still ten breakdowns, and this data is simply blinding.

Tukhachevsky's face turned red instantly, and he staggered and asked: "How is this possible?" ”

Li Xiaofeng smiled and asked, "Why is it impossible?" ”

Tukhachevsky shouted: "I know the data of the D-5 firing hollow quilt cap-piercing shells, that is, the level of 1000 mm at 1000 meters, how can it be improved so much now?" ”

Tukhachevsky asked the voices of everyone present, everyone is an expert, and the data of the D-5 is not a secret, at least not for the generals of their level, and it is absolutely impossible to obtain such awesome data at the level of the D-5 firing APCBC shells.

Li Xiaofeng replied nonchalantly: "New ammunition!" ”

When Tukhachevsky heard this, he was immediately furious: "How can you cheat with such an immoral method?!" This result is invalid! ”

Li Xiaofeng gave him a blank look, snorted and said: "Then your ZIS-2 is not cheating, don't tell me, the BR-271N you use is not a new armor-piercing projectile, don't tell me that the BR-271N can be mass-produced!" I'm afraid that even the BR-271P will not be able to be mass-produced, right? Isn't that cheating? ”

Tukhachevsky's face was even more bloody, he did not expect at all that his little cleverness was completely seen through by someone, yes, everyone cheated, then don't laugh at fifty steps and laugh at a hundred steps!

However, Tukhachevsky was still stubborn: "Although the BR-271N and BR-271P are not mass-produced for the time being, they can also be supplied to the Guards on a small scale." ”

In fact, this is still a lie, because it is still the BR-271P with worse performance that can be supplied to a small number of Guards troops, not the BR-271N. Tukhachevsky is stealing the concept again.

However, this is still useless, because Li Xiaofeng blocked him back with a word, only to see a certain immortal shrug his shoulders and say contemptuously: "The problem is that the new ammunition I provided to the D-5 has been fully mass-produced in NORINCO, and from October this year, not to mention the use of the Guards, it can be used by all armored troops and artillery equipped with D-5 series guns!" ”

Tukhachevsky was speechless, because a certain immortal had been beaten in the face so hard that he was completely speechless. However, the slap in the face of a certain immortal had just begun, because soon he added: "And NORINCO promises that the price of this new ammunition is much cheaper than the BR-271 series armor-piercing bullets, and we can afford to use it completely!" ”

This sentence scratched the itch of many marshals and generals, who, of course, wanted to get more powerful armor-piercing shells, but based on the size of the Red Army's armored forces and anti-tank artillery, the Red Army could not afford to use this new armor-piercing elastic performance, no matter how good it was, but not cheap enough. For example, the armor-piercing projectile with a tungsten carbide core is not only a problem that the Soviet Union cannot afford to use with the existing tungsten resource reserves.

And now, Li Xiaofeng told them that this new ammunition is cheap enough, which is great news for them, and almost everyone is on the side of D-5 in an instant, as for ZIS-2, to hell with this expensive and time-consuming toothpick gun.

So how exactly did a certain immortal win this contest, to be honest, even Tukhachevsky wanted to know.

After Li Xiaofeng sold enough passes, he said with a smile: "It's actually very simple, this new type of ammunition is actually an armor-piercing bullet......

As soon as this remark came out, many generals were shocked, because, tsk, let's put it this way, they actually don't have a good impression of armor-piercing bullets...... (To be continued.) )
