Chapter 69: The Haze
"Whoever the basilisk's eyes look at, he will die. But not a single one died here - none of them looked directly at it! β
At this point, Harry looked eagerly at the page in his hand again, and the more he looked at it, the more he felt his heart brighten.
"The crowing of a rooster is also fatal to it!" He read aloud, "Hagrid's cocks are all killed!" Once the Chamber of Secrets is opened, the heirs of Slytherin don't want roosters near the castle! β
"But how is it possible for the basilisk to crawl around?" Ron said, "A big ugly snake, someone will definitely see it!" β
Harry pointed to the two words that had been scribbled underneath the paper.
"Pipe!" He said, "Ron, it's been moving in the pipeline. I always hear that voice inside the wall......"
Ron grabbed Harry's arm.
"The entrance to the chamber!" He said hoarsely, "Maybe it's in a bathroom?" Maybe it'sβ"
"Crying Myrtle's Bathroom!" Harry said.
"That means," said Harry, "that I'm not the only one in this school who knows Parseltongue. The heirs of Slytherin also understand, so they can control the basilisk all the time. β
"Oh yes...... Ron was agitated, but after a while he changed to an angry and feeble expression.
"Yes, but even if we know this, what can we do...... I think we'll have to go to Professor McGonagall. β
"Yes, let's go to the staff lounge," Harry said, jumping into the rain, "she'll be there in ten minutes, and class will be out soon." β
"No matter who the heir is, you can't go wrong with acting first!" Harry said firmly.
With that, the two hurried downstairs.
They didn't want Professor McGonagall to find them wandering down another hallway, so they walked straight into the empty staff lounge.
It was a large wooden room surrounded by dark wood chairs. Harry and Ron were pacing around, too excited to sit down.
However, the bell for the end of class never rang.
Instead, Professor McGonagall's voice echoed through the hallway, amplified many times by magic.
"All students immediately returned to their dormitories in their respective colleges, and all teachers returned to the faculty lounge! Act now! β
Harry spun around sharply and glared at Ron.
"Is something wrong again? At this time? β
"Maca! It had to be him! Ron said, "I'm going to find him!" β
"Don't jump to conclusions, Ron." Harry said, his eyes searching around.
To his left was an ugly closet full of the robes that the teacher wore to class.
"Hide in here. We listen to what is going on and then tell them what we find. β
They hid in the closet, listening to the footsteps of hundreds of people walking upstairs. Then, the door to the faculty lounge was pushed open with a bang. Harry and Ron looked through the musty layers of robes as they walked into the room, some bewildered, some frightened.
Professor McGonagall arrived.
"Something happened again," she said to the silent teachers in the room, "a student has been kidnapped by a monster." Brought directly into the secret room. β
Professor Flitwick let out a scream, and Professor Sprout jerked his hands over his mouth.
Snape, on the other hand, gripped the back of a chair and asked, "How can you be sure?" β
"The heir of Slytherin," said Professor McGonagall with a very pale face, "left another line of writing. Just below the last text, it reads: Her bones will remain in the Chamber of Secrets forever. β
Professor Flitwick couldn't help but cry.
"Who is it?" Mrs. Hooch slumped into a chair with her knees limp. "Which student is it?"
"Ginny Weasley." Professor McGonagall said.
Harry felt Ron silently fall beside him on the floor of the closet.
"We'll have to send all the students home tomorrow," Professor McGonagall said, "and that's the end of Hogwarts." Dumbledore used to say......"
The door to the faculty lounge was slammed open again.
Ron, who was sitting on the bottom of the closet, even thought it was Maca coming, but it turned out to be Lockhart, who was still smiling on his face.
"Sorry, I'm late......"
He didn't seem to notice that the other teachers were staring at him with what could be described as hateful gazes.
Snape took a step forward.
"The person who solved the problem came," he said, "and this is the man." Lockhart, a girl who has been captured by a monster. Led into the Chamber of Secretsβyour time to show off your splendor has finally arrived. β
He thought that Lockhart would be panicked by this, but to his surprise, Lockhart still maintained his bright and calm expression.
"Yes, of course...... I'm going to go to the office and get ready. Lockhart smiled and left the staff lounge amid the strange gazes of the professors.
β¦β¦
As Lockhart hurried back to the third floor and pushed open the door to his office, the smile on his face immediately collapsed.
"Oh my!" He closed the office door and said toward his desk, "Do you really want me to go to the Chamber of Secrets to deal with that terrifying basilisk...... I mean, since you've known my secret......"
"Actually, I don't want to."
In an armchair beside the desk, an expressionless teenager reclined on the backrest. The cuff of his left arm was rolled up, and there was a large abrasion on his forearm, which was faintly bleeding at the moment.
The boy was holding a ball of cotton wool with tweezers in his right hand, and was dipping it in a pale green liquid to medicate his wounds!
"As you can see, the basilisk is really not easy to deal with, and in the end I let it slip away."
"But Professor Lockhart, you don't have to worry too much. Although the basilisk can slow down its growth by dormancy, it does not stop growing," said the boy, "and it is too old, and now it is not lightly injured, and even one of its eyes is blind, so it will not be in much danger." β
ββ¦β¦ Isn't this a door-to-door novel fodder? β
Lockhart nodded with difficulty, but muttered again, "Isn't that still an eye......
At this time, the boy put the tweezers in his hand on the table, took out a roll of bandages, and wrapped it around his arm, he said as he wrapped it.
"I'm going to go with it, I'm going to need experiments, and you're going to need fiction materials, isn't it?" He said, "You don't have to do anything, you don't need to recite a spell to achieve your goal, is there anything better than that?" β
"Okay, okay! Even if you don't say that, I'll have to do it......" Lockhart said, shaking his head, "I can't believe you're only in second grade this year. β
"As long as you are focused enough," the boy lowered his sleeve and looked up at Lockhart, "Your Oblivion Charm must be a master, isn't it?" β
"But it's not like you've blocked it."
The boy walked to the door and opened the door to his office.
"Because I'm focused on magic, and you're focused on opportunism."
With that, he walked away quickly.
Lockhart looked at the slowly closing office door and muttered, "Marca McKellen...... McLean, is it some old pure-blood wizarding family? Why don't you seem to have heard of it? β
β¦β¦
At this time, the deans of each college went to inform the students of what had happened. They had to be told that the Hogwarts Express would take them home early tomorrow morning.
And the other teachers make sure that no student is left outside the dormitory.
The teachers stood up and left one by one.
It was probably the hardest day of Harry's life. He, Ron, Fred, and George sat in a corner of the Gryffindor common room, unable to say a word. Percy was away, so he sent an owl to deliver a message to Mrs. Weasley, and locked himself in his dormitory.
No afternoon has ever passed so slowly as it has been, and Gryffindor House has never been so crowded and silent as it is now.
As the sun was about to set, Fred and George couldn't sit still any longer and went back to their dorm room to sleep.
"Ginny knows something, Harry." Ron said it was the first time he spoke since they hid in the closet in the staff lounge, "and that's why she was captured...... It had nothing to do with the stupid things Percy did. She must have found out something about the Chamber of Secrets...... Maybe she's met Maca! It must be so, that's why she-"
Ron rubbed his eyes desperately, anger growing on his face again, "I mean, she's a pureblood, she wasn't supposed to be her turn!" There can't be any other reason for this! β
Harry could see the sun sun, red as blood, sinking below the horizon.
He had never felt so sad in his heart as he was now. If only they could do something. Whatever it is.
"Harry," Ron said, "you say, is it possible that she hasn't- you knowβ"
Harry looked at Ron as he looked angry and depressed, and didn't know what to say.
Although Harry had always felt that he could not easily suspect his friends without evidence. But Marca's various behaviors this semester are too suspicious, so he has to feel depressed.
"I think we should go to Lockhart and tell him what we know." Ron suddenly said, "Isn't he going to enter the Chamber of Secrets?" We can tell him where we think the Chamber of Secrets is, and tell him it's a basilisk! β
Harry couldn't think of anything else, but he wanted to do something, so he nodded in agreement with Ron's proposal.
The Gryffindor students around them were in a sad mood and felt sorry for the Weasley brothers, so when Harry and Ron got up and walked through the room and drilled their way through the portrait hole, no one tried to stop them.
As they walked downstairs to Lockhart's office, they noticed that the hallway was getting a little dark.
Night has fallen......
