Act XXXVI. New Matter vs. Old Theory
Rather than an electrolytic circle, it's a constant DC generator that converts mana into electricity and conducts it through wires arranged around it.
To activate this circle, one or more mages with one ring or more are required to continuously provide mana, or two standard magic stones to power up.
This is not Cornwall. The circle created by Lord Penzance was created by an earlier one named Alessandro. It was invented by Cuomo's mage, and he applied for a patent for it, but due to his early death, the patent was already open for use.
A curious mage replaced the wires with other metals, and discovered that when the current became stronger, the wires would glow with it, and in this way, he made a gadget for lighting, which was quite popular among some of the nobles, but of course, this is another story.
The three men in the lab were staring at the wires that had been inserted into the inverted catheters, and where they could not see, the currents were rushing through the wires like rushing rivers, and they came into contact with the water, scattering the energy and stirring up something more profound.
All of this is macrocosmic, that is, above the electrode, a tiny bubble emerges from the electrode.
It's just a small bubble, invisible, but it's conspicuous in an inverted tube.
Claire held her breath and stared at it all with wide eyes.
The bubbles gradually increased, draining the water from the tube, and the amount of gas produced by the two electrodes was significantly different, and by the time the water at one end was almost exhausted, there was still nearly half of the water in the tube at the other end.
At this point, Reiner motioned to stop the experiment.
Now in front of them were two test tubes that seemed empty, but everyone knew that there was some kind of gas in them.
And according to the weighing, the quality of the water in the sink does become a little less.
Reiner's assumptions are becoming reality, step by step.
"First of all, let's sort out the current thinking, water does become two gases under the decomposition of electric current, this conclusion should be fine, right?"
Confirming to the two ladies, Reiner was also quite excited at this time.
Since water can be decomposed, it means that it is not some kind of magical element, but a real compound, and if the properties of these two gases can be verified in the next step, it means that Reiner's conjecture is not wrong, at least at the level that can be accessed for now, the chemical knowledge he has on Earth is still valid in this world.
"That's right, yes, but it's also possible that it's water vapor, you know, electricity is like a flame and it can change things."
Claire made an opinion, now her mind is not on whether the basic element of water can really be broken down, whether the past theory is correct, and so on, she just wants to verify what these gases are made of as soon as possible.
"So let's verify the properties of these gases."
Reiner first picked up the gas released by the cathode, which was a little less weighty.
Claire casts an identification spell that can distinguish three states of water, but when she gets feedback, the teacher is stunned.
"It's not water vapor...... Not even a known substance? ”
If it weren't for the fact that this conclusion came from her own identification, Claire would have thought it was some kind of hallucination.
"Will it be a flame retardant?"
Reiner asked that the flammable gas he was referring to was carbon dioxide produced by calcined limestone, but for the time being.
Of course, he remembered that in the water electrolysis experiment, the positive electrode was supposed to release oxygen, but Reiner still needed hard evidence, so he decided to verify it first.
Xia Luo stared at the test tube and was silent.
"Give it a try."
Lighting a match, blowing it out leaving only a spark, and releasing the finger that sealed the tube, Reiner poked the match into the mouth of the tube.
In an instant, the embers that had been extinguished burned again, emitting a dazzling and bright light, but only for a moment, the match returned to its original state of silence.
"It seems that this gas is the opposite of a flammable gas and can help combustion, so it is temporarily named a combustible gas."
Reiner summarized as he recorded his observations in his notebook.
"It's similar to the feeling of the fire elemental."
Charlotte mentions that Claire comes back to her senses.
"That's right, if you can make the extinguished embers burn again, is this the body of the fire elemental?"
Another excitement welled up in her heart, and Claire exclaimed.
For many years, although there have been theories of the four basic elements, unlike flowing water and earth, the fire element has not been able to find an entity, or an entity that can be studied in a stable existence, and if this special gas is the fire element, then the alchemy theory can undoubtedly move forward for another few decades.
"Yes, then we can measure the mass of these gases later, according to the guess in the latest "Alchemy", the fire element should have a negative mass."
"Negative mass?"
Claire was a little confused, she naturally hadn't read the latest papers, and the concept of negative mass was too bizarre, even if she was told that it was proposed by the academic masters on "Alchemy", Claire couldn't believe it for a while.
"It seems to be running out of gas here, so let's see what the properties of the gas in the other tube are."
Reiner said, also asking Claire to cast the identification technique, and the result was still an unknown gas.
"If that gas just now is a fire element, then this gas here should be an ash gas that has lost its fire element and cannot burn, according to theory, that's right?"
Claire thought for a moment before nodding in confirmation.
"Then let's use an open flame to verify it."
With the same match, Reiner carefully approached the mouth of the test tube tilted downward, releasing the thumb holding the tube to bring the flame closer.
Poof-
To Claire's and Charlotte's surprise, the flame did not go out, nor did it burn any brighter, only a faint sound came from the test tube, echoing in the quiet of the laboratory.
"What's going on?"
Claire was completely confused, apparently, this gas has a different nature from a flammable gas, and it is not a combustible gas, this is a third gas.
Electrolyzed water yields two completely new substances!
The discovery of a completely new substance alone would make a paper worthy of publication in Alchemy, let alone the discovery of both, both of which could no longer be decomposed from water called "basic elements"!
Feeling that it was difficult to breathe, Claire slumped into her chair, fortunately, Reiner's previous series of actions had already loosened her cognition, otherwise Claire would probably be fainted by the magic on the spot because of this huge impact, and even her brain exploded like those ancient mages!
Then, as if to wrap up the experiment, Reiner brought the test tube containing the gas capable of making a popping sound to Claire and Charlotte's eyes.
The two of them opened their eyes wide and clearly saw that there were a few small drops of crystal water inside the test tube.
