Chapter 69: A Routine Investigation by the Ministry of Magic
Luckily, Umbridge clearly fits the definition of a good dog, and as soon as he enters, he can't wait to search the cabin.
She worked tirelessly rummaging in any place where there might be traces, knocking and bumping on tables and chairs with her wand from time to time, or gluing up the sheets with her fingernails to see if there were any letters or something underneath, but unfortunately Ivan handled it cleanly, and she couldn't find it...
"If you don't have anything else to do, go back to the castle." Professor McGonagall hinted that they should leave.
Ivan nodded and prepared to leave, but before he could leave, Umbridge's voice came.
"Wait.."
"Minister Fudge, these kids happen to be in the report inside, I think they should know something?" Umbridge said.
"Umbridge, I remember what happened Dumbledore has already told you very clearly, the children don't know much, they just accidentally found a clue and came back to inform me." Professor McGonagall said with a frown.
"But I think there's probably something to hide." Umbridge took a few steps forward, her wide, loose-skinned face was close to Ivan and the others, and Ron, who was closest to her, couldn't help but take a few steps back, but Umbridge didn't care, and said with a greasy smile.
"As far as we know, someone saw a little wizard riding on the back of a dragon yesterday."
"That's what Seamus said, didn't you ask in school? He's a well-known blaster at school, and since any spell will fail, Seamus may be trying to make up a story to get attention to him. Ivan said lightly.
"Then I'll be sure to ask." Umbridge's eyes were fixed on Ivan, trying to see something in his face.
However, Umbridge was soon disappointed, and Ivan's expression did not change in any way.
"Alright, Umbridge, maybe we should check it out somewhere else." Fudge said impatiently, he wasn't interested in wasting time on some story made up by a young wizard.
In fact, Fudge didn't have much interest in the so-called dragon thing at all.
He came here in person just to see if Dumbledore was doing something behind his back, and it would be great if he could use this to weaken Dumbledore's reputation.
Although he admitted that Dumbledore also helped to do some "tiny" work when he was seeking the position of Minister of Magic, since he sat in the most powerful position in the wizarding world, Fudge certainly didn't want someone to be on top of him all the time, and even speak more effectively than his own minister!
This is absolutely intolerable to him!
When Fudge first became Minister of Magic, he naively thought that Dumbledore was too old and would retire into the background in a few years at most, or die outright.
But he didn't expect that a full ten years later, Dumbledore was still alive and kicking, and his spirit was better than him, and Fudge wondered if he was still his headmaster at Hogwarts when he died of old age.
He knew that the greatest white wizard of the century had always had a good personal relationship with Nick Lemay, and that he might have drunk some kind of life-prolonging potion.
"Then I think we can go to the fourth floor of the castle, and according to some of the students, they were warned at the beginning of the school year that if they didn't want to die a tragic death, it was better not to go near there." Umbridge is also a good dog, and soon has a new idea.
"Alright, let's go there thenβ" Fudge was a little more interested again.
"Fudge, do you think I'll hide a dragon in the hallways of the castle?" Dumbledore, who had been silent, suddenly spoke.
"Look, I'm just looking... How could the next dragon be hidden there? Fudge noticed Dumbledore's half-moon eyes under his half-moon glasses, and there was a panic in his heart for no reason, but he still pretended to be calm, not wanting to show his cowardice in front of the other party.
"I've taken you to the scene of the accident, and it's just an ordinary attack." Dumbledore accentuated his tone and continued.
"Hagrid was injured by magic, there are traces of a fire spell in the place where the fire burned, and the unicorn's death was due to the killing curse... There is no evidence that Hogwarts had a dragon, or that it violated the regulations of the Ministry of Magic! β
"I know, but this is a routine Ministry of Magic investigation!" Fudge felt that his authority had been challenged like never before, and he spoke very strongly.
Umbridge duly took out a search warrant and displayed it in front of Dumbledore...
However, Dumbledore didn't look at it, he just looked at Fudge quietly.
In the already crowded wooden house, there seemed to be a kind of pressure for a while, which made Harry and the others very uncomfortable, and their teeth curled up into a ball and clamped their tails, and Umbridge wanted to speak but couldn't speak.
Ivan was quietly in front of his melon-eating crowd, and he didn't mean to mix, because this was completely Dumbledore's own thing, and it had nothing to do with him.
To his surprise, Dumbledore used the Philosopher's Stone to fish, and the Ministry of Magic didn't know about it, or the Ministry of Magic knew very little.
However, considering Fudge's attitude towards Voldemort's resurrection in the original book, Ivan somewhat understood, Fudge didn't want to believe that Voldemort was still alive, let alone set a trap for something as precious as the Philosopher's Stone.
Even if Fudge did agree to do so, the place where the trap would be set would have been in the Ministry of Magic, and Fudge himself would have squatted with dozens of Aurors to guard it.
Harry, Hermione, and Ron weren't in the same laid-back mood as Ivan, and what Fudge said worried them, after all, they knew very well that there was a three-headed dog in the hallway on the fourth floor, and they couldn't imagine how Minister Fudge would react when he saw it.
The solemn atmosphere lasted for a while, and finally it was Dumbledore who broke the strange atmosphere.
"Of course the Ministry of Magic wants to investigate, there's nothing unsightly there." Dumbledore slowed his tone, Fudge was the Minister of Magic after all, and he didn't want to get into too much trouble with the Ministry of Magic if he could.
"I also assure you that this is the last place to be searched." Fudge was also relieved and took the initiative to back down.
Dumbledore didn't say much, and walked towards the door, his calm appearance making Fudge wonder if his insistence was right.
But Fudge quickly regained his confidence, as Dumbledore's previous reaction proved that he definitely had something hidden from him, and Fudge winked at Umbridge when he thought of it.
Umbridge suddenly realized, turned to Ivan and the others with a greasy smile.
"You guys follow along, and it's best not for me to find out what you're doing on the road."
