Chapter 72: Interlude to the Dark Tide (12)
Luciana led Esher to her residence at the Academy, and took out three flattened pieces of paper from under her bedding and handed them to Esher. I don't know if this counts as a proper keeping. When Esher received it, he found that each piece of parchment contained only a short verse written on it. But if you look closely, every sentence can fit his behavior so far. Whether it's escaping the dueling arena of Janos or assassinating Ned Grace, you can find a reference. Only the last piece of parchment puzzled him, and the verses were particularly short:
"The fire that changed the world burns slowly in the snowfield / The falcon returns in the wind and snow / Sonata with the dragon / Murmur / Pushed to the climax!"
The further back on, the more illegible the handwriting becomes, with "climax" being the last word that can be barely deciphered, followed by a tangled string of lines from which even the most seasoned linguist can hardly piece together any meaningful symbols. At the end of the line is an abyss-like dark ink stain that engulfs the writer's final narrative. It's not hard to imagine how rushed he was at the beginning. Brochette was not wrong, and Madigan did not have time to finish his long prophetic poem. Although the poems are full of symbolic symbols, it is not difficult to tell from some of the key words that this passage is probably about his encounter in the North, and has little significant connection with Estheau's hallucinations yesterday.
Luciana had been watching Estheu's expression from the sidelines. At the late night secret meeting of the Theological Society, scholars gathered around the round table to discuss this verse, and their intentions were no different from those of Estheus today, hoping to glimpse the future through the veil of prophecy. However, no matter how scholars interpret and share their opinions, they will ultimately stop at conjectures that cannot be corroborated. As the protagonist of the long poem, Baranduk does not seem to be able to make any further interpretation. When he pulled his gaze away from the parchment, there was no sudden realization on his face, and it seemed that Madigan's manuscript had not inspired the child of prophecy in any way.
What a waste of time. Luciana grumbled inwardly. She suddenly remembered the fourth conjecture that Brochette had told her after the meeting, that the members of the Society had kept secret—perhaps the prophecy that the long poem had come to an end, and that Barandoque would reach the end of his life at the climax of the so-called "Sonata of Dragons and Falcons," like the abrupt ink stain in the original manuscript.
Do you want to tell Baranduk? Luciana was still hesitating. By this time, Esher had already handed the manuscript back to her: "Thank you very much. He turned, ready to open the door, but before he could touch the handle, the door was pushed open by itself.
"Luna~" stood a strange but dazzlingly beautiful young woman outside the door, her long ice blue hair draped over her shoulders freehand, and despite wearing a thick cotton robe, her figure was not graceful. The uninvited guest smiled evilly: "I'm coming in?" Although it was an inquiring tone, when she pushed the door open, she had already stepped into the room with one foot, and then she saw Esher with a pestle in the doorway. The two of them looked at each other, and they were both momentarily stunned.
"You're Esher Baranduk? What are you doing in Luna's room? ”
"Who are you?" Eshua frowned, he remembered that he had never met the woman in front of him, but why did she know him, and even call out his name in the first place.
"Sister Eastelle?" Luciana was surprised and said, "Why are you here?" Aren't the physical fitness classes scheduled in the afternoon? ”
"How?" Eastelle looked away from Estheu and replied dissatisfiedly, "Do I have to meet my lovely student during school hours?" Or did I accidentally disturb your tryst with the upstart barons of the North? Didn't I say, this man has no future, what is the difference between Ismolola, whose territory is located on the far eastern border, and being assigned? ”
"This, the misunderstanding is too deep." Luciana argued in embarrassment, "Mr. Barandoque is discussing some academic issues with me. ”
"Academics?" Estelle's eyes lit up slightly when she noticed the three pieces of parchment in Luciana's hand, "How do I sound like a 'love letter'?" She stepped over Eshu and stumbled lightly in front of Luciana. Luciana didn't react at all, only felt as if the wind swept between her fingers, and Madigan's manuscript fell into Istelle's hands. She pinched the corners with her fingers and pouted in disgust:
"It's not that I say, the quality of these papers is too inferior, more or less a baron, to write love letters to girls, at least on lambskins. It's still dilapidated and old, you can't have dug it out of someone's grave, right? As she spoke, she glanced at the contents of the paper cursoryly, and her expression gradually became stunned: "What kind of mess is written?" ”
"You misunderstood!" Luciana jumped up to snatch the manuscript from Estelle's hand, who giggled and raised her arms. "No, little Luna, you've been trained by me for almost a month, and your strength still hasn't improved. Baranduk over there, would you like to explain what kind of ambiguous password you have? ”
"There's no need for that." Eshua replied blandly. He stepped forward and reached out to pick up the manuscript in Estelle's hand. The light flashed in Estelle's eyes, and she pushed Luciana aside without a trace, spun her body briskly, her arms swaying in the air. But Eshua didn't give her a chance to continue maneuvering, and his palm changed direction in the middle of the process, and he grabbed Estelle's arm neatly, and pulled her in front of him with all his strength. Estelle couldn't break free, so she simply stepped on Esher's toe. The corners of Eishu's eyes twitched slightly, but the strength in his hand did not diminish in the slightest. Estelle could only watch helplessly as he took the three old pieces of parchment from her hands.
"Baranduk, let go! Do you want to continue to take advantage? Estelle glared at Estheau. The latter was unmoved, just looked at her with a frown: "I don't remember seeing you, how do you know my name?" ”
"Then you're forgetful." Estelle sneered, "I've met you twice, the first time in front of the Imperial Academy auditorium, when you recognized me as a brute of the Misty Mountains and almost cut off half of my head with an axe. ”
"I can't remember, the second time." Estheu said that at that time he was in a state of complete delusion, how could he know if he had cut the wrong person.
"You're sitting near naked behind the dean's desk."
"Oh." Eshua nodded, he was vaguely impressed, but at that time his attention was all on Brochette, and he didn't have time to pay attention to anything else. Estheus let go of his hand and returned the manuscript to Luciana. The latter took it and was distressed to find conspicuous cracks in the edges of the parchment. "This is a precious historical document. Sister Istelle, you're always like this, don't listen to people! ”
"Oh yes, isn't it still intact," Isdale waved lightly, "Okay, I'm not right, I'll relax for this afternoon's fitness class." See you then, little Luna, and I won't bother you to have an academic discussion with Baranduke, hahaha! In a burst of ungraceful laughter, Esdale did not close the door and drifted away.
"Is this Baroness Icedale? I remember that her territory was supposed to be on the Peninsula, how could she come to Poynbru? ”
"She was invited by Dean Brochette to be my physical trainer," Luciana explained awkwardly, "because she often ventured deep into the Misty Mountains, and therefore often provided a wealth of information to the scholars of the Royal Academy. Before she became a baroness, she was also a registered scholar in the Academy. Luciana frowned in annoyance. When the manuscript fell into Estelle's hands, her heart beat almost to a halt. Brochette had strictly advised that the custody of the manuscript to her was a matter of absolute secrecy and that it should not be disclosed to a third person—a fourth person, including Baranduk. Fortunately, the baronet, who had always been very aggressive, was not affiliated with the Theological Society, so she did not realize anything. I can only hope that she will not be regarded as gossip. Or should she have tactfully made this request to Eastelle during her physical fitness class, but could she have misunderstood it even further? Luciana was still hesitating melancholy, but found that she was the only one left in the room. Essho didn't know when he had left, so he silently closed the door before leaving.
