Act 349. Reiner's theory
Claire had finally eaten enough after destroying a lot of food, and several of the Mercury Scales were speaking in front of the room, Reiner listened a little, and then led Claire to the terrace who wanted to eat and drink.
The terrace was very large, several couples were snuggling up in the relatively dark area, and some mages were whispering academic issues, and Reiner was a little out of place with Claire.
Claire leaned against the railing, the night breeze was cool, and Reiner took off her coat and draped it over her shoulders.
"Thank you."
Claire whispered, silently pulling her clothes, and Reiner's body temperature was still on her coat, so that the cold wind of early winter was no longer cold.
In the dimly lit terrace, the faces of other people are not visible, only the white parts of the clothes are faintly shining, and it is quieter than the lively banquet hall.
"You see, the men's shirts and bow ties, they shine brighter than the women's skirts."
Reiner said suddenly, causing Claire to tilt her head and look at the rest of the terrace, except for the couple who were biting their ears that made Claire blush a little, she did notice that the male mage's white shirt gave off a faint glow at night, which was very special.
"Hey, really."
Claire had never noticed this before, and it was only after Reiner reminded her that she suddenly realized it.
"Do you know why?"
Reiner asked with a smile.
"Why?"
Claire thought for a moment, but didn't know why.
"Because of the laundry detergent."
Reiner replied, seeing that Claire didn't quite understand, and added an explanation.
"Most of the laundry detergents produced on the mainland have something called a fluorescent brightener, which has the property of emitting fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet light, which can make clothes look whiter."
Glancing at Claire beside her, Reiner continued.
"Fluorescent matter actually exists in nature, some mosses and mushrooms, as well as marine organisms will emit light, the essence of this phenomenon is that the electrons in the matter are excited by the energy of ultraviolet rays, produce a transition, and thus release light, which is the hypothesis I put forward in the afternoon."
"Hey, is that so?"
To be honest, Claire didn't really understand Reiner's research, she only knew that it was quite important and of epoch-making significance.
But after Reiner's explanation, she seems to understand a lot, seemingly esoteric research, in fact, it is about the common things around us, magic is not an ethereal castle in the sky, but a towering tower with its feet on the ground.
And Reiner, right at the top of the tower.
This made Claire feel happy at the same time, but also a little sad.
Whether it was themselves or the rest of the Crescent Academy, they were already too far away from Reiner, a distance that they could not catch up with in their entire lives, and as time passed, they might all end up being just passers-by in Reiner's long life as a high-level mage.
"When stars — like our sun — are born and die, they emit a lot of ultraviolet radiation, so if we could see the night sky through ultraviolet light, almost all of them would disappear."
Reiner said slowly, his words causing Claire to raise her head and look at the clear night sky.
With the stars shining brightly at night, Claire couldn't imagine what it would be like when the stars were gone.
"What's left in the night sky?"
Claire turned her gaze to Reiner, and almost a second earlier, Reiner's gaze shifted from Claire's body to the night sky.
"At that time, all we could see was the heroic life and death of the stars, like these gentlemen in gowns and ladies in long dresses dancing in the dim light."
Claire saw Reiner's side face, focused and serious, he seemed to be thinking about something, this expression Claire had seen many times, but today was the first time she felt how attractive Reiner was like this.
"It was a bit of a lonely scene."
Claire sighed.
"In fact, even the stars we see now may only be reflections of the past, and some of the stars themselves have died out before our eyes are even reached, and even the mages seem too small on the scale of the universe."
Reiner shrugged, and he turned his head to find Claire looking at him, a little ripple in her violet eyes, which was heartwarming.
"However, Reiner, you are already a high-level mage, maybe you will become a new legendary mage, you can have a lifespan of hundreds of years, and I, everyone at the Crescent Academy, may leave early."
Claire avoided Reiner's gaze.
"Claire, do you think time is absolute?"
"Huh?"
Claire couldn't figure it out again, and what Reiner said seemed to look stupid, but when she thought about it, it seemed to have something else in mind.
"For high-level mages who have lived for a hundred years, maybe a few years is equivalent to one year in their perception, and a mortal's toiling life may just be a long cycle of experimentation for them, do you think that's the case?"
In response to Reiner's question, Claire nodded in understanding.
"So, try to imagine a creature, their lifespan is as long as tens of millions of years, for them, even a high-level mage, is just an ant in the long river of time, and there is another creature, its lifespan may only be a few minutes, in the casual sigh of people, this creature has already finished its life."
Reiner's words made Claire fall into deep thought, and it took a long time for her to raise her head again and look at Reiner.
"Short and long, only you can experience it, and from the perspective of others, there is no way to evaluate it?"
She replied, and then seemed to understand something, and her eyes turned a little red.
"That's right, the long life of a high-level mage for hundreds of years is no different from the life of an ordinary human for a hundred years, if it is only the length and only the emptiness, then it does not have any meaning."
Reiner smiled and said.
"It's like sitting across the stove for ten minutes in this cold winter, but it feels like an hour has passed, and I stand here with you for an hour, but it seems like only ten minutes have passed, time is relative, long and meaningless life, and short but shining time, the meaning of each person is completely different."
"Hmm."
Claire nodded, she already understood what Reiner meant, it was something she had been worried about, and it was something she had always felt unsolvable, but Reiner told her the answer.
"So, would you like to spend the rest of your time with me?"
Reiner gently shook Claire's hand.
