Act 264. Biological Observations of Erasmus (Part I)
The work of the magical expedition team was simple, they met at nine o'clock in a conference room of the institute, and Baptiste introduced the day's itinerary, distributed relevant materials, and then went on a field trip.
The research area of the institute has two buildings, one of which is the experimental area, which is basically a working laboratory and a database, and the conference room is also here.
The other building is a biological breeding area, where Baptiste captures some local creatures and cultivates them in specific areas for observation.
"I didn't expect it to be sunny so soon, I thought it would be soaked in the rain this week."
Agnes stretched to highlight the curves of her mature body, and the mage glanced out the window and looked back.
In front of them, in the glass window, there is a pool of water arranged with miniature shrubs, and at first glance there is almost no trace of the animal's presence.
But if you look closely, you will see that on the branches, there are several discordant places that are difficult to distinguish.
"This creature I call the chameleon lizard, according to the dissection, there is not much physiological difference from the ordinary lizard, but it has a special ability, that is, to change the color of the body, in harmony with the surrounding environment, so as to hide in it, from predators."
Baptiste said, holding up the information in his hand.
"All the other information about this creature is in this document, page 12, if you have any doubts, you can flip through it, or you can ask me questions."
Reiner flipped to the page, and indeed all kinds of information about this chameleon lizard were written on the information, which must have been compiled by Miss Windsor who stayed up late yesterday.
"Mr. Baptiste, why does this lizard have such abilities?"
Jane raised her right hand and asked without scruples.
"That's exactly the problem."
Baptiste tapped lightly on the glass, only to see that the plants in the pool suddenly changed a color, from the original emerald green to dark yellow, which is the color of fallen leaves, perhaps these plants have also undergone magical transformation, and can control their color, in some plant-related spells of the necromancy, such plants are not uncommon.
Suddenly, the green lizards were nowhere to be seen, and they were very visible among the yellow leaves.
But before Jane and the others could take a closer look at the appearance of these lizards, their bodies started from their tails and gradually became dark yellow, disappearing in the yellow leaves.
"Through my research, I found that the epidermal cells of these lizards themselves contain tissues that produce various different pigments, which are also found in some other lizards' body tissues, but these chameleon lizards have more developed tissues in this aspect."
Baptiste explained that microscopic observations of the data show that some cells in chameleon-changing lizards are disproportionately more than those of their close relatives who do not.
"Because they are in the rainforest of Erasmus, these lizards have to adapt to a variety of different background colors, dark green in the rainy season and withered yellow in the dry season, and if they remain the same color, it is easy for predators to notice, and it is precisely because these chameleon lizards need to hide for a long time that the cells on their skin that control color are particularly developed, so that they can change color in a short period of time."
Nodding thoughtfully, Jane didn't have many questions.
Reiner silently took note of the contents, and instead of rushing to question them, he wanted to see more creatures.
They then went to another observation room, where some birds were kept.
These birds were similar to those seen by Reiner in the early morning, and they were perched in the treetops, their sharp eyes staring at the visitors, very vigilant.
Arymia noticed that the birds' black feathers seemed to be smeared with grease and glittered in the light, and they spread their wings, flew through the vast observation room, and then, swooping into the water, grabbed a small silver-white fish.
"This is a rainforest falcon endemic to the Irazmus halfplane, and unlike other birds that rely on flight to hunt, their wings are covered with a special layer of oil to keep out rain, and at the same time, their wings are stronger than many large birds, which is enough to fly and survive in the harsh climate of storms."
Baptiste said, adding again.
"Information about this bird is on page XII of the materials."
Elimia knows that it is not the prerogative of rainforest falcons to secrete oil, in fact, most waterfowl will have similar functions, such as ducks and seagulls, but according to the data, the rainforest falcon's oil secretion and ability to resist rain are three to four times that of ordinary waterbirds, and the rainforest falcon is not even a waterfowl in the traditional sense, it does not have webbed claws that facilitate paddling, nor can it swim in the water for long periods of time.
It's easy to understand that if the rainforest falcon becomes a waterfowl at all, it will lose its means of prey during the dry season in Erasmus, and webbed birds are not good predators on land, their claws are difficult to tear at their prey, and their wings are not as good as those of prey in flight.
This creature is more likely to be formed for the climate of the Erasmus half-plane, where the rainforest falcon will catch fish that float due to lack of air in the rainy season, and in the dry season, under the cover of the forest, it can hunt small animals, making it one of the top predators of the half-plane.
"The function of birds to secrete oil is not unique, but birds of prey generally do not secrete too much to affect flight, and the rainforest falcon has gradually evolved this function in order to adapt to the environment of Erasmus, which is one of the proofs of my theory."
Baptiste said, glancing at Reiner out of the corner of his eye, and seeing that the young mage had no obvious expression, he continued to lead the crowd to the next observation room.
There was a fish tank in the observation room, and there were many small whitebait swimming in it, and just as Arimia was about to look through the information to find out what was going on with them, a huge black fish burst out of the shadows and devoured most of the small silverfish in one gulp.
Through the glass, you can see that the fish is black all over, has sharp teeth, and the two fins slide slowly, and after eating enough, it enters a relaxed state.
"This is a carnivorous fish that exists in the Irasmus halfplane, and its name is land fish, and you can take a closer look at its fins, ladies and gentlemen."
Hearing Baptiste's words, Jane narrowed her eyes slightly and looked at the big fish that was swimming slowly.
I saw that the ordinary fins of the fish still have sharp claws, and the fins on its tail are more developed, if you put aside its identity as a fish, it seems that it can survive on land with this fin alone.
"Due to the special environment here, these fish will move from the water to the land during the dry season, their fins can move themselves on the dead leaves, and the gills can also store a lot of water for them to live on land."
It didn't take much to explain, and the people of the Magic Expedition quickly understood that it was valid to apply Baptiste's theory to this creature.
"Guys, I don't know if you have any questions about the creatures I showed earlier?"
Baptiste said, looking around at the crowd.
In the silence, only one hand was raised.
But to Baptiste's and others' surprise, it wasn't Reiner, who had disputed Baptiste's theory in the first place.
It's Arimia.
