Chapter Sixty-Eight

Previous Chapter

The 1994 U.S. World Cup was in full swing across the United States.

The group stage is played in stadiums in major cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Boston, New Jersey, Washington, and Orlando, as well as in surrounding satellite cities. Some of the turf of the multi-purpose stadiums that used to be rugby stadiums still have 10-yard lines that look different. The United States is a global leader in commercial television broadcasting technology, the game scene is magnificent, and the atmosphere of the stadium is superb.

It's undoubtedly a sports feast, and the NBA Finals, which just ended a few weeks ago, is more of a game than a game. The Knicks' supposed city-wide championship parade was postponed to after the World Cup after some consideration. Americans, who are not particularly passionate about football, can't resist the deadly attraction of the cup of life when the World Cup arrives on their doorstep.

In order to cope with the influx of fans from all over the world, some police forces in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens were transferred to Jersey to maintain law and order. Football fans are far crazier than basketball fans, they are more organized, more emotional, and more mixed. NBA commissioner David Stern has been working since the 90s to make the NBA a big reality show for middle-class families to enjoy. And football stadiums, especially quadrennial tournaments with national honors such as the World Cup, are not much different from war for many fans.

On July 11, 1994, in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, at the Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, Bulgaria faced the defending champion Germany. When they beat Argentina in 1990 to get revenge and win the championship, the German team was still called West Germany. Two months later, the two Germans were reunited and East Germany ceased to exist. Some East German players such as Salmo and Dole were integrated into the German team, making Germany stronger in 1994 and the favourites to win the tournament before the game.

As a result, the German team unexpectedly fell to the Giants in the World Cup, and they won a penalty kick in the opening game to take a 1-0 lead, but suffered a "black three minutes" and were reversed by Bulgaria 2-1. Stoichkov scored a brilliant free-kick that killed the Germans' dream of defending their title and caused a big upset.

After the game, a large number of Bulgarian fans and even more German fans gathered near the Giants. You know, the United States, as a nation of immigrants, although in general is a continuation of the British Anglo-Saxons in the New World, in fact the most populous ethnic group is the Germans. Moreover, there are many local German fans from Germany, and the feelings of disappointment and pain can easily spread among the crowd, and a small flame can cause riots to break out on the street.

Brown and Juan sat in the police car, looking at the frantic fans on the street near the stadium, their hearts full of depression, but they did not dare to let their guard down.

The day before yesterday, they received a message from an informant that someone would use the quarterfinals on July 11 to commit murder, just like the killing of Gigandi in the parking lot of the Giant's Arena on June 24. The investigation team has initially pinpointed the suspect on the New Jersey area boss, Luca Abramo, whose territory is East Rutherford. This time the informant provided information, and they had to guard against it.

The normal match between Bulgaria and Germany kicks off at 12 o'clock in the afternoon and ends close to 2 o'clock, but the fans, especially the German fans, are reluctant to leave for a long time, they can't accept falling at the feet of a third-rate team like Bulgaria, and become the ghost of the black horse. Until four o'clock in the afternoon, five o'clock, there were still a large number of fans gathered.

Juan and Brown have mixed feelings, on the one hand, as police officers, they certainly don't want accidents, and on the other hand, they want something to happen and prove the informant's words to be true. Several homicides so far have been carried out cleanly, leaving little value behind. But all sorts of clues point to the emperor of the Italian mafia in the New York area, Jackie Gandolfel, and Luca Abramo, who exists as his thug.

The sky is getting dark, the sun is setting, and night is about to fall. Darkness always breeds evil, and people are often more prone to extreme and sensitive emotions in the dark, and if you add the effect of alcohol, violence is almost imminent. The people of the police force no longer hesitated, the sirens began to sound, and the police began to disperse the crowd.

The American police are not vegetarians, and there are often football hooligan riots in Europe, and the American police have made ample preparations this time. Tear gas, rubber bullets, stun guns and other explosion-proof equipment are readily available. The police have a wealth of experience in dealing with mass incidents, starting from the periphery of the street to clear the siege and make steady progress towards the Giants, driving away crowds street by street.

The emotions of the fans were ignited, and skirmishes began in some streets, but they were quickly suppressed by the police.

Juan started his car and drove around the streets around the Giant's Stadium, turning on his siren to avoid the crowds of fans. Around the Giant's Stadium, other members of the investigation team were deployed, and they used radio to communicate and understand the situation situation. Brown sat in the passenger seat, he frowned and looked at the chaotic streets, the sun was setting, the oblique sunlight sprinkled the world with a layer of golden red, and the noise, scolding, and sirens filled the air, this is the impact of the World Cup and football.

"Who would kill someone in such a situation? So many witnesses, so many police. Brown muttered to himself that, as a police officer, his instincts told him that there was something wrong with the informant's intelligence. But they had to believe it, and the World Cup was linked to murder, putting the New York Police Department under tremendous pressure.

The last rays of the sun were swallowed up by darkness, and there were fewer and fewer people near the stadium, and those excited fans gradually calmed down, and most of them were dispersed to go home, and a small number were arrested by the police. Especially German fans, anyway, the national team is eliminated and there is no ball to watch, and it doesn't matter if you enter the game and eat two days in prison.

Everything is calming again, except for the garbage and the residual smell of gas to bear witness to the chaos just now.

Juan parked his car in the parking lot outside the stadium, which had become empty and the fans had left. The murders did not happen, and although there was violence, no one died. There were beer bottles shattered on the ground, but no gunshots rang out nearby. The walkie-talkie in the car was still ringing, and the members of the investigation team were reporting their situation, but nothing happened.

Brown dialed the radio channel back to the city, and a message soon came over the intercom:

"Brooklyn Navy Playground Dock, there was a massive shootout, need support, need support......"

……

More than four hours ago.

Arthur turned off the TV in the living room, got up from the couch, went to the wine rack and took out three wine glasses, poured some Bordeaux wine, handed it to Abramo and Russell, and took a sip of himself. The rich aroma of wine slides from between the lips and teeth to the throat, and as it enters the stomach, a slight burning sensation gradually spreads throughout the body, causing the capillaries to open slightly. A wave of energy gradually rushed to his head, making Arthur, who was a little groggy after watching TV for two hours, wake up a lot.

He had anticipated Germany's exit and as a sports fan he knew that Bulgaria in 1994 was a dark horse and that they would reach the semi-finals before falling at the feet of Italy. Specifically, it fell at the feet of Roberto Baggio, who would score twice in the game to put Italy in the World Cup final.

Immediately after, it was the back that broke the hearts of all the blue fans.

Arthur has changed the course of NBA Finals history, and he certainly has to intervene in the ownership of the World Cup winners. Not only because he is half Italian and is a member of the Italian mafia, but more importantly, he wants to manipulate the betting market of the World Cup final and play a big game.

Jackie Gandolfer's casino suffered heavy losses after the NBA Finals, but it was able to survive and operate. This World Cup has added a lot of turnover to the casino, and Gandofil has learned smartly, he has no control, and he does not have the ability to control the market, and he chooses to pump, which is gradually slowing down.

But Arthur didn't want to give Gandolfil a chance.

In the World Cup final, he wants to bankrupt Gandolfel's casino completely.

"By the way, how's the Navy Playground dock arranged?" Arthur asks Abram.

"It's all set up, and the police station is spreading fake news. We'll be working around six o'clock, and we have our people in a few key locations on the dock, so there won't be much of a problem. Abrama replied that the main purpose of the operation was to rob the Gandolfer family of a batch of illegal drugs and drugs that had been hoarded at the docks.

With the help of the World Cup, the flow of passengers and goods in New York has increased significantly, and the Gandolfer family fished in troubled waters and purchased large quantities from Mexico, hoping to use the World Cup to make a fortune in medicines and regain market share. But the news was leaked to Arthur early, and he had figured out the details of this purchase and let Abramo plan to snatch it.

As the "captain", the latest series of assassination violence was led by Abramo, with Russell assisting. Calculated or unintentional, when Lukka recklessly launched the killing, the other gangs seemed difficult to parry for a while. He sent his wife and children to Philadelphia for a vacation in advance, and he and his brothers stayed in New York to control everything remotely. This is no longer a simple battle of interests, but a complete elimination of the other side. Some of the corners of the Abramo family were puzzled, why did they make such a heavy hand, didn't they worry about incurring retaliation from other families?

"If we wipe them all out, won't there be no revenge?" Abramo replied to his subordinates in the same tone as Arthur.

The underground world of New York, at least the world built by the Italian mafia, is about to be smashed to pieces.

A new world is about to be rebuilt from the ruins.
