Chapter 190: Sabah
Seeing the arrival of Byron and his soldiers, there was an immediate movement on the Oasis' side.
A detachment of cavalrymen masked with orange gauze rushed out of the outpost on the edge of the oasis, circled the surrounding sand dunes, and surrounded them. The swords were unsheathed, and they were asked in Salanite what they were coming from.
At this time, it was Kenrad's turn to appear.
He said something to the cavalry captain in Sarandian, and the other man nodded suspiciously, telling Byron and Kenrad to go with them to the elders here.
It was strange to Byron that he had never heard pure Salan before, and he could not speak it at all. But he could still discern the meaning of a few words. It was a subset of words from Salander's poems that he had occasionally seen in books, and it seemed that the system had helped him to forcibly memorize the meaning of the words.
This was beneficial to Byron, who could not fully learn a foreign language, but could understand what the other person was saying. If you put it to good use, he will benefit immensely.
According to the other party's request, Byron took a dozen mercenary cavalry and a few hired killers as guards, and followed the other party into this oasis.
As he got closer, Byron realized that the level of defense was far better than he had imagined.
In the seemingly flat sand near the oasis, there are countless thistles and downed horses, as well as a dense concentration of trap pits. No matter which direction the massive cavalry unit charged, it would be wiped out in a large area on the perimeter.
The only two roads that can be used for passage are also blocked by five fences, each with two or four arrow towers next to it.
Add to this the stone walls and watchtowers that surround the oasis, and the large and elite mercenary forces inside, and only the armies gathered by the kings will be able to take it, and it will not be worth the loss.
But it's also bustling, too, with Salander's black-marketeers dressed and heavily armed mercenaries roaming the streets of this oasis town, resting among the Arabian architecture.
Camels and desert horses are so numerous that twenty dung diggers are needed to clean up their manure on the streets to prevent vital water from being contaminated.
And, of course, there are bands of Assasins dressed in white robes and masked with white scarves. They carried banners with two crossed golden daggers on them, and they uttered words that Byron did not understand.
They are the builders of Sabah and the real masters here. If the need arises, these believers will immediately transform into killers, stabbing anyone in sight with a razor-sharp dagger.
Every stall and shop here sells high-quality and inexpensive dates, a nutritious food that is like bread as a staple food for the locals. Byron tasted a few, it tasted good, and it could be sold for a high price in Swadia.
Byron's banner attracted the attention of some of the idlers, but it did not last. It's full of mercenary teams and mercenary team contacts, and it's not unusual to have more.
The soldiers led them into a house that looked inconspicuous, but was heavily guarded. As soon as he pushed the door open, Byron smelled a strong smell of spices. The smoke was so thick that it almost obscured the view.
Byron opened his eyes as far as he could, and saw that the beautiful satin and tulle were hung in layers as curtains, and the floor was covered with expensive cloth, which looked very luxurious. The copper incense burner was neatly placed on the ground, and smoke drifted out of it.
The nobles and wealthy of Salander were fond of decorating their mansions with silk and spices, but even then the dΓ©cor of the room was comparable to that of the Salander chieftains' parlor.
After Byron and the others entered the room, two guards wearing black double-layer chain armor and black masks covering their faces, and basically the same equipment as the Salander Mamluks, walked out of the room on both sides of the room with scimitars on their waists, and solemnly opened the scarf curtains.
Behind this is an old man who looks to be at least 60 years old. Wrinkled, squinted, and an almost white beard that hung down to his chest, it was a symbol of seniority and status in Salander culture, and a matter of his own dignity.
The old man was dressed in an orange-red Salander robe, with a round hat inlaid with emeralds, and sat cross-legged on a velvet cushion. When the guards on either side had stood up, he slowly opened his eyes and looked at Byron and Kenrad with an unsettling gaze.
The elder clapped his hands, smiled at Kenrad, and said a few words in Salanite that Byron did not understand. Then he looked at Byron and said something in a questioning tone, with a hint of threat in his tone. And the two guards on either side of him also looked at Byron together, with murderous intent in their eyes.
The hired killer behind Byron immediately pressed his hand to the sword at his waist, and Byron was ready to defend himself and asked what the other man had said.
"He's the elder here, and he's the intermediary for all the mercenary teams here. He greeted me, asked who you were, and whether I had brought a friend or foe. β
Kenrad told Byron and motioned for Byron not to be nervous.
"Will there be any trouble telling him the truth?"
Byron asked, almost close to Kenrad's ear.
"No, it's not the first time that a foreign nobleman has come here to hire soldiers."
"Very well, then you tell him that here is von Byron, the leader of the Peony mercenaries, the new baron of the Svadia Kingdom. By the way, tell him that you are now the commander of my mercenary unit. β
After getting Kenrad's affirmation, Byron didn't want to hide his identity, so Kenrad told him truthfully.
Kenrad gave a very formal introduction in Sarandian, and the elder laughed, raised his hand and asked the guards beside him to put away their weapons, and spoke the more common language of the Karadian continent, the so-called Karad. This is the language that Byron has always used.
"Baron of Svadia, I am Subatuha, the elder of Sabah and the introducer of mercenaries. When I was younger, I fought against the Swadias as a Mamluk, and I hated the Swadian nobles. But you are indeed excellent as the leader of the mercenaries, and you deserve the admiration of others. So as long as you don't break the rules here, Sabah will welcome you. Now, say what you want to do and enjoy a little bit of heart. β
Elder Subatuha clapped his hands, and several strong servants came in with cushions and small tables and placed them in front of Byron.
Then a couple of beautifully dressed and veiled Salander women came out with baskets full of dried fruit and date sugar, and filled every table with food.
Byron was in a trance, as if he had entered the Arabian Nights Arabian Arabian world.
After eating a little, Byron made it clear to the other party that he needed to hire an army to retake the territory and capture the castle of Rhodoc. And his words also aroused the interest of the other party.
"Guest of Svadia, if you say this to others, I am afraid they will think that you are suffering from madness. Here, though, you'll find the best team of mercenaries in Calradia who can help you take down everything you want. β
"But business is business, Byron. Even if you are a king, you have to pay the price. What are you willing to give for these soldiers? β
Subatuha asked as he ate a snack.
When Byron heard this, he gave a color at Kenrad to raise his vigilance, and then asked a few mercenaries to carry a box on the back of a camel into the house and open it in front of the elder.
