Chapter 19: Stanwick's Proposal
In a temporary laboratory in Victor's makeshift laboratory, in a waste gas factory deep in Zaun.
Victor's third hand emitted a very fine light, and the metal was steadily and accurately welded into his left arm. The smell of burnt human flesh no longer made him feel uncomfortable, and he could watch the skin of his left wrist open with poise, blood vessels and tendons intertwined with mechanical augmentations. Instead of daunting and backing down, he felt a sense of accomplishment because he saw a seamless combination between synthetic and biomaterials.
After two days of sleepless high-intensity surgery, the bowl flexor Achilles tendon of his left hand was completely strained and damaged, and after treating all the patients, he immediately removed the useless flesh and replaced it with an augmenter, without any reluctance or hesitation.
Holding his left hand still and using a bone cutter to reach deep into his arm to adjust a bolt so that the augmentation is firmly attached to his wrist, Victor proceeded to weld the next bolt to the Achilles tendon under the skin. When he was done, he put several pieces of free epidermis onto the surface of his arm. Finally, a laser is used to irradiate the seam and cauterize the flesh and close the incision.
He moved his wrist, and the wound showed signs of cracking, but he ignored it.
"Doesn't it hurt?" A tall, elegant, ethereal woman asked.
This "man" is Jana, who Jeno has never seen in its entirety, with long pointed ears, her feet floating lightly above the ground, her hair fluttering in the still air, and her blue eyes refreshing.
Since the partnership, Jana has been staying in the lab, manipulating the flow of air and replenishing the fresh air to provide a safe and non-toxic environment for the patients here, while accumulating divine power to brew a great storm that will sweep through Zaun. Victor had spent some time at the Zuan Academy of Science and Technology, so he was no stranger to magic, and Jana couldn't fool him with a simple trick.
"If a person is cut off from the anticipation and fear of pain, pain is easily accepted." Victor's tone was like a statement of a cold fact, without the slightest respect, in his eyes, Jana was just a living form that could not be transformed.
"Oh." Cana nodded as if she didn't understand, although she had been born for hundreds of years, she had never had a physical body, and she only had a vague understanding of pain.
On the beds on the four walls of the laboratory lay dozens of poisoned and comatose patients, men, women and children, all of whom fell into a deep coma, and their blood vessels were filled with many flexible tubes, which were filled with dark red blood.
Victor filtered the toxins from their blood, but with little success, because most of the toxins had already penetrated into the internal organs and even the brain, but he did not give up, these patients were barely hung with the toxin dialysis device he had just developed, and he had to find a powerful energy source to improve the efficiency of the toxin dialysis device, otherwise these patients would not survive.
Jana has tried to use her divine powers as an energy source to power the toxin dialysis device, but to no avail. The power of faith cannot be applied to technology, and after all, there is no such thing as generating electricity from love.
Looking at these patients who are worse than death, Cana is also very tormented, but as long as she survives for a while and survives until her strength is enough to release the large monsoon, everything will be different.
"Someone's coming." Jana sensed the unusual flow of air, so she reminded Victor that for the past two days, there had been sneaky people looking around the laboratory, but Victor was so immersed in the operation that none of them could enter, and whenever someone used extraordinary means, a demonic wind would appear around him out of thin air, rolling up rubble and smashing his breathing apparatus through cracks as a warning.
Well, Jana worked as Victor's bodyguard for two days.
After hearing the prompt, Victor adjusted the silver dial of the iris lens. The device adjusted the path of light through a set of reflective lenses, allowing him to see clearly on the street outside the lab window, and then a flash of doubt flashed through his deep pupils under his steel mask.
He saw an acquaintance, someone he hadn't seen in a long time.
……
Jace wore his own breathing apparatus and arrived in Zaun.
Aside from a few mandatory house gatherings in his youth, Jace rarely came to Zaun. Jace was a native of Mrs. Piltworth and was instilled with the idea that the city was the basic principle of progress: invent, discover, and stay as far away from Zaun as possible.
So the number of times he came to Zaun was only a handful.
He had come to Zaun alone this time, for few could tolerate his arrogant, no-nonsense character, and he had no friends, perhaps he had, but now he didn't.
Most things were easy for Jace to learn, so he couldn't understand why what he saw as simple concepts would be struggling for his peers. As a result, almost everyone who has worked with Jace will perceive him as arrogant and unsightly, and will never slow down and let others catch up with him.
As time went on, Jace became less and less patient, and at the same time, his demeanor drifted away from politeness and grace.
Loneliness is a common problem of genius, he thought.
More than ten years have passed, and when he saw Zu An today, the stereotype of Zu An in his heart still hasn't changed after comparison, it's still dirty, full of pollution, and it's full of disasters, he doesn't understand why Zu An people like to use dangerous alchemy technology so much, it's just a poor imitation of Hex's technology, and it's green everywhere, ugly and dead. If they could use their inventions, Zaun wouldn't be like this.
As he walked while thinking, he accidentally stepped on a puddle of water, and the green liquid in the puddle stained his shoes green like paint, and he couldn't shake them off, and he began to regret coming here a little.
Why did he come to Zaun? He reflected.
This morning, Professor Stanwyck found him, appearing under the skylight of his lab with news of the Storm Aggregator in his lab.
He tells Jace to go to Zaun and meet with Victor to see if he can get word out about the Storm Aggregator.
As soon as Jace read the newspaper, he immediately asserted that the Storm Aggregator could not exist, because he couldn't build such a weather-grade weapon himself, and he knew that Victor's level was half a pound and half a tael of his own. If you can't make it yourself, no one can make it.
Stanwyck smiled in disgust, and proposed, "If you go on this trip, whether it works out or not, I'll give you the Shurima Crystal."
"Victor......" Jace lost in thought.
A few months ago, Jace heard that Gilpala's expedition had discovered a pristine piece of azure crystal in the Shurima Desert. Jace volunteered to experiment with it (and pointed out that the other scholars in the group were not smart enough to produce any useful results), but instead had the Gilpala Group give the crystal to the more polite scholars, including the unashamed Stanwyck, as punishment.
Unfortunately, months passed, and scholars unanimously agreed to conclude that the crystal was worthless and nothing more than a large stone that had been drained of energy. Stanwyck also failed to figure out anything, so he gave the crystal to Jace as a bargaining chip.
The Syndicate felt that no matter how talented Jace was, it was impossible to get anything out of it, and although they were unhappy with Steinwick's actions, they acquiesced.
In Stanwyck's mind, if Jace could get even a little bit of Storm Aggregator information, his investment would be successful, and it was not the first time he had done so, he had asked Jace to "cooperate" with him more than a decade ago.
On that occasion, he managed to win the lawsuit and became Britz's titular "father".
"Get the crystal ready, I'll get it when I get back from Zaun." Jace finished thinking and opened his eyes sparkling.
