Chapter 19: Foolish Lack of Leaders
Wilson Fisk was a fat manβa simple word that might not accurately and vividly describe that exaggerated image.
He had an unusually large skeleton, a face full of meat, and his clothes and pants had to be custom-made by the store because there was no size he could wear in any store. He could sit at the table and take the place of two people β three of them.
The most amazing thing is that such a body shape does not give people the intuitive impression of "obesity", but looks like he is very strong, like a mountain piled up with rocks.
It's easy to imagine that when such a big guy gets angry, the person facing him is like facing a volcano that erupts lava all over your head. But surprisingly, Fisk in his normal state seems to be quite kind.
At least when Richard first met him, Wilson Fisk left that impression on him. Fisk was smiling the whole time, and his expression looked relaxed but not rigid. He looks at them politely and without discomfort when they speak, and he never interrupts them before they have finished speaking.
Even if he knew in his heart that this guy was actually a criminal boss, Richard still had to admit that having dinner with this guy was a very easy task. It didn't seem for nothing that he found that this guy could climb to such a position.
"You weren't a New Yorker before?" Fisk asked, cutting a small piece of steak with a silver knife.
Richard found that this guy's table manners were actually quite good, and he was still imagining that Fisk would eat steak with a whole piece of half-ripe and nibbling directly.
"It's not." Richard shook his head.
"I'm a native New Yorker." Fisk said to himself as he ate his steak, "I've seen every aspect of the city. The good part about it...... And the bad part. To be honest, the latter is probably more common this year. β
Richard didn't speak, quietly waiting for him to continue.
"Outsiders mostly see the bright side of the city. Its skyscrapers, its bustling streets, all its pretty sides. But many people don't see its dark side...... It's what it really looks like. β
Fisk put down his knife and fork and looked out the dining window. Outside the window was a dark river, quiet, undisturbed, but so deep that it seemed that any secret could be swallowed up by it.
"I've seen the city change with my own eyes." Fisk said, his fists clenched subconsciously and pinched the silver cutlery, "I watched it degenerate and decay, and watched sin grow on it like germs. I've seen the good guys struggle in the city, while the bad guys live at ease and in high positions.
The city is sick, very sick. Many people living in it are aware of this problem, but they all choose to remain silent, to make concessions and to compromise. Sin is becoming more and more rampant and lawless in greater tolerance......"
Richard couldn't help but be a little dumbfounded as he watched Fisk make an impassioned speech here. Fisk's appearance reminded him of the loyal ministers in ancient poems who wanted to serve the country loyally, but suffered from corrupt officials and villains.
It's just that you shouldn't be in the lineup of corrupt officials and villains, right? Is this character mistaken?
Listening to Fisk talking about crime here with emotion, it feels like Qin Hui's inscription "Man Jianghong", how awkward the painting style is.
Fisk continues: "There was a time when I, like everyone else, was indifferent to all this. In a way, this also made me a part of the accomplice and contributed to the evil. It made me regretful, angry, like...... It's as if sin is rampant right now, and I'm to blame for it. β
Richard sneered.
Load, load. It's like you're not responsible.
"So I decided I couldn't go on like this. It's our duty to save the city, Mr. Lee. You and I, and all those who are capable like us. β
"I think you're right." Richard said.
"That's why we need to make changes. In fact, you can do more than I can do in this area. "You see, after all, I'm just a businessman, and all I can do is pay for it." And you, you can do so much more than I do. All I could do was invest some money and build a school, a hospital, or a library. You, on the other hand, can make people think, lead people's thinking, and make the right decisions.
That's what I found you for, Mr. Lee. I have a series of plans for New York...... An ambition, you can say. I'm going to put half my life into doing everything I can to make this city a better place. But I can't do it alone, I need the support of others. β
Richard understood.
Fisk has said so much and made such a big detour, in fact, to put it bluntly, I hope that the Planet Daily will give him more kind words and say some good things about him in the future. After all, the reputation and influence of the Planet Daily are growing day by day, and Fisk must have taken a fancy to this.
Richard raised his glass and smiled at him, "Of course." If my small newspaper can also play a part in Mr. Fiske's great plan to build New York, it is incumbent upon us to do so. β
For the sake of people who have paid so much money after all, it is natural to say two good words...... At least until Fisk gets his hands on it.
Richard said that if one day his own reporter accidentally found evidence of Kim Ji's murder or something, then it would be no wonder to him.
But as far as tonight is concerned, the two talked quite speculatively. Fisk's mention of the sin and darkness of New York was so hateful that Richard, who had been flickering for a while, almost believed it. He spoke of his deep affection for New York and his determination to reform as if he were thinking from the bottom of his heart about the city's future.
Maybe Fisk is really loving the city in his own twisted way.
But Richard felt that the main reason why he could sit down and talk with him so happily was because the fat man had bled for the newspaper.
Richard had always wanted to have a golden model of the earth on the roof of the newspaper office, and it had to be the kind that could turn on its own - like the newspaper where Superman worked.
That's called the Planet Daily, which can be called a landmark of the metropolis, how handsome!
I didn't have the money to get it before, but now it's okay, and the most troublesome part of the problem has been solved.
Richard was having a good time chatting with Fisk when a group of unscrupulous guys broke in at the same time, despite the waiter's dissuasion. The man at the head was dressed in black and had a large beard, and he walked straight through the dining room to sit down at the table of two.
Several other men surrounded him without saying a word, all with black supers on their faces, their expressions were not good, and their faces were like "Who is the boss".
"You're Richard Lee?" The bearded man asked arrogantly.
"We know each other?"
"You can call me 'Viper.'"
Richard suddenly said: "Oh, those stupid leaders are you, fortunately, I will be lucky." β
