Volume 1 Chapter 54 Brick Making
The next day, I plan to make bricks first, but I need to spend a little time building a workbench and a simple grass hut before I start.
You must know that the temperature is still very high, and the sun has not been very kind to me since I went to the island, and my skin will get sunburned if I work completely in the open air!
The workbench is relatively simple, directly using the large stone slab used as a table in the kitchen before moving it over as a countertop, and then finding a lot of more regular stones below to adjust the thin mud to about one meter two.
Anyway, as long as it is strong and doesn't collapse, I don't need to pay too much attention to it, and I will work with it for a long time to come!
The production of the grass shed is slightly more complicated, but the problem is not big, all kinds of wood are ready-made, directly select the right size into the ground, and then find two bundles of large leaves to spread the grass roof, the total area is three or four square meters.
It only took half a day for the workbench and the straw shed, plus the chores such as mowing the grass for the sheep and cooking and eating, the busy day always passed very quickly, and it seemed that it passed without much to do......
However, in the two or three hours before dark, I still dug up as much soil as I could to make the bricks tomorrow and added water to moisten it.
In order not to dig a piece of land in the east and west, which will make the open space at the top of the mountain uneven and affect the aesthetics, I plan to dig the soil in only one place.
I chose to dig the soil about 30 meters away from the well, which is at a good distance from the well, which is more convenient for mud and water, and will not hinder my daily movements.
Brick-making needs to see if God appreciates the light, not every day can be done, can only be selected in the well is the wet period or just after the rain when the soil is moist to adjust the mud, otherwise there is not enough fresh water in the well to provide.
That is, the well water is very abundant in the past few days after the typhoon, so I don't have to worry much about it in the last few days!
......
The brick-making will start anyway on a new day, and it will be sunny for several days, and I don't know when it will rain again, and I don't know when I will be able to wait until the first room is completed and put into use.
Yesterday's dug mud after the effect of water transfer is not obvious, it seems that only by adding water and stepping on both legs can the viscosity of the mud continue to increase, and the good soil is like a dough with a delicate feel, not soft or hard and easy will not be deformed!
Mixing mud is a very, very troublesome thing, if there is a cow, it is faster, without a cow, you can only use your own legs to keep walking in the mud, and in less than an hour your legs are like pouring lead!
Fortunately, the area of the first adjustment was not large, only two or three square meters, which was completely used as an experiment, and it took me four or five hours to adjust the small area to about the same.
At first, I thought the water was about the same, but the more I stepped on it, the thinner it became, and I added a lot of dry soil before it was almost usable.
Sprinkle grass and wood ash in the brick box and on the work surface, and then dig a large piece of the adjusted soil and beat it on the side of the table to deform it, and then smash it into the box one by one.
After the last extra part is crossed out, the middle part is divided into two, and the two qualified bricks are formed.
Of course, things are not as simple as imagined, and doing anything that has not been done before will inevitably be rusty at the beginning, especially if it is still a little difficult.
At first, either the soil fell to the ground, or it couldn't fall into the box accurately, and the situation was full of problems!
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and the success of the first brick at least gave me hope.
Although a room may require thousands of bricks, it is even less difficult than when the first wooden house was built almost with bare hands, but it takes more time.
An hour, two hours, and the speed is slowly increasing.
I only made thirty bricks in the first hour, and forty in the second, and I believe that as my proficiency continues to improve, fifty bricks per hour should not be a problem.
......
After the formation of the bricks will be laid in a row according to the regular row, after half a month to a month of air drying, of course, when the air drying, the top layer will be built with a layer of generous hay to prevent rain from soaking.
At this time, the first stage of work is basically completed, and all that remains is to check the condition of the bricks occasionally.
It is true that brick houses are more troublesome than wooden houses, especially in terms of workload, which is almost three to five times more troublesome, and the degree of trouble in making bricks and tiles is the most.
After the bricks are air-dried, they can be fired, and if they are deformed and cracked before firing, they will be scrapped directly.
Calculated from digging the soil and mixing mud to the kiln firing later, and then to the final firing, the total time spent on a brick is at least five minutes!
Generally, modern bricks and tiles are basically fired with coal, which is not only fast, but also better than the bricks, and I can only use firewood to fire, because there is no other choice!
The bricks burned with firewood are likely to be navy blue, and I remember that when I was a child, the bricks burned at home were made of firewood, but the performance is not much different from coal bricks, and it can still be used for decades without damage.
Before I started making it, I thought that I should be able to make 500 bricks a day, and spread 50 bricks per hour for 10 hours a day, so that the net time is only a week, and I can basically make the number of bricks needed for the first room!
However, the actual situation is that on the third day, when it gets dark, I only make about 1,000 bricks, which is an average of more than 300 bricks per day, and if you add the rain and other delays, it is almost impossible to make the bricks needed for the first room in half a month.
There are many reasons why the output cannot keep up with expectations, in addition to the daily process of cooking, eating and feeding the sheep every day, the most important thing is that one person rotates continuously.
From the very beginning of drawing water to digging, mixing mud, mixing mud, making bricks, and placing a dragon, sometimes I feel like I'm dizzy!
Among them, the most time-consuming is the mud, the mud for making bricks and tiles should be very delicate and high, and the requirements are almost similar to the usual dough at home.
There is not much water in the well after three days of rapid consumption, and of course I am tired enough, and tomorrow I am going to take a break for the day to do some other things.
I've figured it out, it's not something that can be done in three or two days anyway, and waiting for a hundred days is not much different from waiting for ninety days, and it doesn't matter if it's fast or slow!
The tile is not so anxious for the time being, mainly because the demand for bricks is more urgent, and the drying time of the tile is relatively shorter, almost half of the time of the brick.
......
Now that I have been forced to stop work, I can also spare my hands to rebuild the straw shed in the sheepfold, although I have been worried about the rain, but I have never had time to deal with it!
I was very annoyed to clean up the collapsed straw hut inside, because there was sheep manure and dirt left on it, and it was really difficult to look at it, and I still used a stick to pry it out.
The new generation of grass sheds will definitely be much stronger than before, eat a trench and grow a wisdom, this time the choice is to remove the wood piling thicker than the arm on the top of the house, and the height is lower, only about one meter and a half.
The grass roof is indeed a very big hole, but I can't solve it for a while, and it seems that I can only wait a long time to build a sheep shed with tiles to solve the problem completely.
On the top layer, I reinforced more sticks, hoping to withstand future typhoons.
......
After a few days of hard work, the corn has been completely dried, and only peanuts are still drying.
With three or four hundred catties of corn, I am not so worried about food, at least I can concentrate on building a house with more time in between!
In the past few days, there are straw mats and wool blankets at night, which has significantly improved the comfort and sleep quality, but there are some slight burns on the skin during the day when working in the sun, although it is best to avoid it, but this situation still happens.
The monotony of the food also made the body protest, and it seemed that I had to suspend my work for two days and go to the beach to find some seafood or something.
Now not to mention the body, even I am very disgusted after seeing the tortillas and fish every day!
I don't want to put up with this situation any longer, so I'm going to go to the beach today to dig for leeches, and I'm also going to look around the island.
I haven't been to the island for ten days and a half and four turnarounds, so if there are new supplies or things blown by the typhoon, I can't say.
As soon as it was dawn, taking advantage of the low temperature in the morning hours, I hurriedly ate two tortillas and set off with two bottles of water and weapons.
When you go down to the beach, you dig up the leeches first, because it is more suitable to dig now without the help of salt, and when you come back, the temperature will be higher.
In the past, when there was salt, the bamboo leeches that were picked up on the ground were not so obedient today, and it took two hours to dig out about two catties, looking at the sun slowly rising from the sea and sky, I put the hoe and the bamboo leeches dug out at the foot of the mountain and began to move towards the island.
......
After each typhoon, there is a lot more garbage on the beach than usual, and it is also possible to get some new supplies.
But this typhoon was extremely ferocious, and the garbage on the beach was several times as large as usual, and one or a pile of garbage could be picked up almost every few steps!
While moving forward, I kept picking up garbage, which was slower than usual, but of course there was still a harvest, and I picked up a 5-pound plastic bottle in just ten minutes.
Walking and stopping all the way, a layer of fine sweat appeared on my body again in less than an hour, during which I found a pair of fishing nets, but because they were too broken and old, I gave them up.
Other garbage is still piled up in small piles as usual and then burned after drying, and everyone is responsible for protecting the environment!
I picked up four or five slippers, each of which was different in size and color, three of them were thrown aside by me because they were too small and shabby, and the other two were very reluctant, but they were good for bathing and home life, but they made the feet a lot more comfortable.
Another discovery was a large plastic bottle of 5 kg and 20 kg, and I was very happy to find the large bottle......
Now the big bottle is very useful for me, because every day I will go between the building house and the cave, especially the cooking is still in the cave, and it will undoubtedly be more convenient to bring fresh water to the cave in the future.
The second half of the trip is even more exciting, and I feel like I was just when I first arrived on the island, feeling like I was lacking everything!
