Volume 2 Chapter 152 Bamboo Bow
The top of the mountain has hardly changed, and there are many small seedlings growing in the fields again, but the weeds everywhere all reveal a sense of decadence!
There were no surprises on the island, and after a brief check, I embarked on the return trip, but the return was not so smooth compared to the normal situation when I came.
A very sudden gale changed the direction of the ship and blew the broken sails of the ship, and it happened quite suddenly, which caught people off guard!
Without the sail as a power, the speed of the boat was drastically reduced by more than half, and the only option was to paddle with two hands on the oar, which was not only exhausting, but also surprisingly difficult to handle.
It took almost a lot of effort to successfully sail the ship back to Crocodile Island, and the time that was supposed to return at about three o'clock was also postponed to after five o'clock, and when he returned to the shore, the whole person almost collapsed!
Fortunately, there was no other danger, just a tired body and a loss of damaged sails.
As time went on, some of the things I got in the first few years of Ueshima gradually faded out of the stage after the end of my lifespan, and while thanking them for helping me a lot, I also regretted that there was no substitute for many things, such as plastic sheeting!
But there are some things that are destined to be lost, and my mentality has not changed, and everything will continue to be the same when I get home.
The day after I returned home, I took advantage of my free time to take out the bow and arrow that had been idle for a period of time again, even if there were no crocodiles on the island, but the proficiency of the bow and arrow still did not need to be wasted!
Not only did I not want to waste it, but it was also necessary to maintain a high level of proficiency all the time, so after taking out the bow and arrow, I started practicing archery again in the open space.
As I expected, I haven't used it much for three or five months, and the technique is rusty again, after all, this is a technical job......
There is no problem in practicing archery itself, but at this time there is a problem, just shoot out five arrows, the bow body "crackles" and breaks in half, and the hand holding the arrow is directly smashed on the forehead because of the inertia of the break!
For the first time, I was not only distressed and broke the bow, but was also smashed by a fist, and I almost fell to the ground!
I was very glad that the tail of the arrow didn't hit my face due to inertia, and the fist didn't hit my eyes, which was quite lucky, even if I was smashed into a thumb-sized bulge on my forehead.
But compared to smashing my eyes, it's just a trivial matter, and it also reminds me that I should pay more attention when using a bow in the future!
As a partner who hunted dozens of crocodiles and achieved great achievements, its damage was a pity, and after two or three years of use, I have long been accustomed to its feel.
......
But I also know that any item has its own lifespan, even if it is a variety of metals in a few decades will appear in various situations or corrosion, so it's a pity, and I will be relieved after thinking about it.
And in addition to the pity, it is also logical to remake a strong bow, this long-range self-defense weapon is an indispensable thing for survival in the wild!
There was no tree on Crocodile Island that used to make bows and arrows, and I didn't want to go back to the island to find it, because I hadn't lived on it for too long and wasn't as familiar as I was at the beginning.
What's more, even oak-stiff wood breaks after three or four years of use, and the fact that a bow made of wood has undergone this fracture makes me think that it is dangerous!
Its fracture is too sudden, there is no warning, this time luck only smashed the forehead a bag, but next time there may not be luck, the best choice is of course to eliminate the risk in advance.
Bamboo bows differ from wooden bows in that they make a "stabbing" sound, at least before they break, as if a person yells when they can't carry a heavy load.
Bamboo must have fibers that begin to break before breaking, and it is very obvious that they break from the outside first, and relatively speaking, the toughness of bamboo is better, and the preservation time is longer.
Of course, it's not that the oak is said to be useless after it breaks, its ability is beyond doubt, dozens of crocodiles are proof of this, it's just the focus of my choice, in terms of the performance of the bow and arrow itself, it should be better than the bamboo bow!
I chose a bamboo tree that is about four years old, and its surface is consistent and smooth without damage, which is a very good material.
Although the toughness of the young bamboo in two or three years is sufficient, it is easy to be eaten by insects and easy to deform, although the difficulty of making is lower, but in comparison it is better to use old bamboo.
In fact, there are a lot of dried old bamboos left at home, but because the dried bamboo is not plastic, it can only be abandoned, otherwise it can be more convenient!
The one or two meters closest to the ground of ordinary bamboo is generally slightly curved, but it is also the hardest part, and my choice is also to remove the position after the bottom one meter, which is hard enough.
......
The species on the island are just ordinary bamboo, and the thick and tall bamboo and other higher quality bamboo, its hardness is poor, the height is far inferior, the only advantage is that the material is softer, can make a variety of handmade bamboo products.
Therefore, when choosing to make tools such as bows and arrows, you need to be very careful in selecting materials, otherwise you may fail to make them!
After selecting the materials, I sawed the long bamboo tube into a length of about one meter three, and then split it into three pieces of similar width, and used a knife to remove the bamboo knots and burrs on it, and finally what was left was three square long bamboo strips, about four centimeters wide.
Since the variety of bamboo is quite ordinary, not the one with thicker walls, it is not suitable to use one piece alone, and it is estimated that it is not even thirty pounds.
I plan to tie three pieces of bamboo together to increase its strength and toughness, just like a chopstick is easy to break, and it is difficult to break a chopstick!
Once the materials are in place, the next step is to shape them, and since I don't know much about bows and arrows, I'm not going to do any recurve and compound bows, which are still the most common bows.
Shaping is actually a simple rope to tie the two ends of the three pieces of bamboo, so that they have a certain bending angle, and the rest is to allow time to slowly transform them.
After five days, I untied the rope on the bamboo piece and found that it was almost there, and if the curve was too much, it might cause the strength to be insufficient.
The length of the bamboo piece is not the same, the length of the bottom piece is one meter, the length of the middle piece is one meter two, and the top piece is one meter three, and several pieces will have enough strength and rigidity after being combined.
After the three pieces of bamboo are completely centered, the next step is to tie them completely except for the longest few centimeters at the ends with a thin thread that has been removed, like tying a crab.
The moment the bowstring is tightened, the bow is completely done, and the only thing that is uncertain is to worry about its combat effectiveness, and there is always a feeling that I can't believe it!
......
As the saying goes, a mule is a horse-drawn horse-drawn slippery, and the bamboo bow feels okay after it is done, and it can basically meet my expectations, and on the surface it looks like the previous oak bow is half a catty.
However, in order to verify its ability, experiments are indispensable, aiming with a bow, shooting, although the first arrow did not hit the target, but I also have a general understanding of the basic performance of an arrow to shoot it.
After it is full, the strength it feeds back is slightly worse than the previous wooden bow, and in my opinion, it may only be sixty or seventy pounds, after all, the material and thickness of the bamboo are not enough!
But if you don't hunt crocodiles, this kind of strength is completely enough for self-defense, and more importantly, the bamboo bow is shorter in size, lighter in weight, and lighter in use.
Sixty or seventy pounds is enough, and it won't be so difficult to draw a full bow, after all, most modern bows only have a strength of about forty pounds, and they still have quite a good lethality.
It's just a pity that the arrow shaft can't be made of bamboo, because the iron arrowhead made of the mold can only be fixed with relatively soft wood, otherwise the arrow should be easier to mass-produce.
However, the arrows used for practice can only be replaced by bamboo, which at least saves a lot of unnecessary trouble and shortens the time.
It's nice to have a new bow, but it's always a weapon, and after three minutes of heat, it's back to normal, not to mention that there's something new for me to do.
For example, boiling salt, grinding cornmeal, etc., in short, daily life is like this, there is always something waiting for me!
......
Just when the days went on uneventfully, thinking that nothing had happened, what I had been worrying about happened.
The fishing rod that had been used for several years was also broken, and the body was not even recovered, which is a pity in retrospect!
Here's the thing, in the morning, when I saw that the weather was better, I couldn't help but run to the beach to fish, and the harvest was also quite impressive, and I caught more than ten catties of fish in just two or three hours, which was even more energetic.
The joy is not limited to this, there is a big fish in the back, and the moment I catch the bait, it almost pulls me into the sea, and I am startled by it!
The first round of the confrontation was full of gunsmoke, and I was a little uncomfortable at one point.
Next, it developed into a tug-of-war competition to see who was stronger, and you were fighting back and forth.
From the bottom of my heart, I feel that it is very stressful to catch it, but if I relax, not only will the fish be gone, but even the whole set of fishing rods will be lost!
So I kept holding on, and after many rounds of competition, we won and lost, and the reef I was standing on was covered with footprints, and my forehead was covered with a layer of fine beads of sweat.
The fish on the other end of the river also looked tired after a period of pulling, and the strength became a little smaller, and my psychology actually thought that the balance of victory was already tilting in my favor!
After a short break, we started the second round of exchanges, but compared to the initial position, it had moved about 20 meters to the shore, and there were less than 20 meters left.
As the distance approaches, it surfaces from time to time and can also see its true face of Lushan, which is a black-brown grouper, about 50 centimeters in length, conservatively estimated to be more than 20 catties!
Seeing its size and estimated weight made it even more stressful, and of course the idea of getting it skyrocketed, and I hadn't gotten a delicious grouper for a long time, especially when it was so huge.
Large grouper is a good thing, the meat is more fatty, and the grouper itself is nutritious, and it is a low-fat, high-protein high-quality edible fish.
