Volume I, Chapter 41: Papermaking

After the two worries were inspected and there were no major problems, the roof of the kitchen had to be repaired first.

A third of it, along with the beams, was blown a distance of one or twenty meters, which showed that the wind was strong, but it only took a little time for me to have an axe now, and it was not without any difficulty.

In general, this typhoon should be about the same level as in the cave, it may not have reached the super typhoon level, of course, it may not be in the center, in short, the damage caused is still within the acceptable range!

I just hope that the weather will be milder and that there will be as few typhoons as possible, because my various crops are very critical in this season, which is directly related to the scale of planting next year!!

......

There is still a long time before the harvest of various crops, and there are still one or two hundred catties of fish in the fish pond, so there is no pressure on food, and after the after-effects of the typhoon are eliminated, it seems that there is nothing to do for a while......

It can't be said that there is nothing to do, but most of the things except for urgent needs need need to be done on my own initiative, which gives people a certain degree of autonomy and freedom to decide what to do first and what to do later!

After I had some free time, I planned to start a project that I had been going to implement a long time ago, and it was "Papermaking"!

I think I must have floated to think of something so difficult!

But there is also a reason why paper is thought of, everything is a need that forces people to want to do it, not hot-headed.

Problems that used to be solved with paper since the island are now replaced by other alternatives, such as going to the toilet, which is a very unpleasant thing, and each time it is replaced by leaves.

When my hands are shaking, I don't know what to say about them, and at first I don't understand the characteristics of most of the leaves.

Some of the leaves were not very kind to me, and after using them, the buttocks were hot like a handful of chili noodles, which was a lot of torture, so I came up with the idea of making paper!

Paper has many uses, and this is only one of its uses, and many aspects have been omitted now, and substitutes are found only when they are really needed.

But after a long time, I still miss it very much, and I plan to try it when I have more free time recently, and there is no loss if I don't succeed, and it would be better if I succeeded.

Papermaking is very exquisite, it can be said to be a profound knowledge, to be honest, I am also very nervous, I have no confidence!

It is diverse in terms of materials, the most important of which are hemp, bamboo, straw, bark, etc., these four categories can also be subdivided into dozens or hundreds of materials, which can be used as raw materials for papermaking.

But because of the environment, I only peeled off the bark from the wood for building the house a month ago, tied it together and soaked it in a puddle in the distance.

The traditional papermaking techniques include many kinds, but they are basically the same, the main steps include: collecting materials, foaming materials, beating, papermaking, squeezing, drying and other processes, as well as some more complex and detailed processes.

And because I can't meet the requirements in terms of craftsmanship, tools, and knowledge, the production process may be more simple and crude.

It's great enough to get the main steps done, but of course my requirements are much lower, and there should still be a great chance of success after simplifying the steps!

The location of the soaking material is the big puddle where the turbid fresh water was played shortly after the island was just on the island, and the weather has been smooth in recent times, and the fresh water in it is very sufficient, which is very suitable for soaking.

However, foam can not only be put into water, but also need to be combined with alkaline substances.

With no other option, I poured a basket of plant ash into the water, which is also an alkaline substance, though the effect has diminished.

Because I was worried that I would not succeed and waste too much time when I cut the material, the first time the material was not soaked much, if it can be successful, the next papermaking should be more soaked!

In fact, papermaking is also intended to be used for writing, and it is usually used to record time in the only book.

But there are words on it, and the pen can only be replaced with charcoal, which is not very convenient, and it is of course more convenient to have a larger and clean paper.

Before the official start, you also need to make a paper fishing tool, a professional paper maker, the leakage net on it is very fine and uniform.

After thinking about it for a while, I found that the only materials that can be used as a net are short sleeves and mosquito nets, considering that the clothes will be very slow to seep into the water and the importance to me, I finally used mosquito net cloth to make a net.

The size of the net is made to be 40 centimeters long and 20 centimeters wide, and one or two layers of mosquito net cloth alone will definitely not work, and the plant fibers will flow away directly with the water.

I tightened it with five layers of mosquito nets, and then made a frame with small wooden sticks chopped with an axe around me, and with the blessing of five layers, I could barely see anything with my eyes.

......

After preparing everything that can be thought of in advance, the next step is to officially start work.

After soaking in the puddle for a month, the bark was brought back and washed off the surface of the sediment with clean water, and then thrown into a large clay jar.

It's just that the big clay pot can't build a simple stove, so move it outside the house in advance, and put the material in it directly around it with firewood to light the fire, just pray that it won't crack in the process of burning the fire.

The purpose of cooking is to disperse the plant fibers into fibrous shapes, and the material is softer, which is convenient for the next step.

Every step is carried out as much as possible according to the practices of the ancients, after all, I don't think I am smarter than them with thousands of years of continuous improvement of craftsmanship!

Beating is to further disperse it into fibers, and make the fibers produce a certain amount of filaments and become usable pulp.

This step stumped me, I was directly on the large stone table in the kitchen to make the ingredients, put a clay pot under the table, and the slurry from the beaten material would flow directly into the clay pot.

These are the best practices I've done after experimenting in many places.

It was not easy to break the bark into mud, so I chose a wooden stick that was thicker than a rolling pin and about 50 centimeters long, and if I used an axe, the slate would have been broken.

Pound the slurry into a paste shape, so that the fiber in the slurry is filamentized and broomized, this step is the most physically demanding, although the soaked plants are relatively soft and easy to beat, but it is not an easy thing!

After beating all the three bundles of raw materials, I was so tired that I almost couldn't straighten my waist, but fortunately this was just an experiment, so the materials were not prepared much, if it was a large-scale production, it would be really terrible!

The next step is to pour all the slurry I have beaten into a large vat after it has just been boiled and cleaned, and then mix it with water to make it a suspension of a certain concentration.

After stirring evenly, put the net into the clay jar and shake it, and then slowly lift it upwards to make the fibers evenly spread on the net to form a thin layer of wet paper.

Speaking of simplicity, this step is actually a very technical test, the paper will be too thin to form, and too long will make the paper too thick, but also always pay attention to if the formed paper is uneven, it needs to be put into the pulp to repair and flat.

The wet paper that was fished out had been piled up in a high pile next to it, at least more than ten centimeters.

At this time, I don't have to worry about them sticking to each other, they have already formed a small tissue automatically when making paper, and they won't stick together like dumpling wrappers, otherwise I wouldn't have stacked them in a pile.

The next step is pressing, which is to stack the copied wet sheets of paper on top of each other.

Using the method of weight-bearing pressing to remove the moisture in the wet paper panel, I have to say that this table made of large stone slabs is indeed multi-functional, and it needs its help at this time.

I put all the stacks of paper on the slate, and put another smaller slate on top of it, and put it on top to squeeze the water out of it, and at this point the whole step of papermaking is almost complete, and finally only one step is left to dry.

At this point, the fear of failure in the initial paper production also disappeared at this moment......

The last step of drying was originally intended to be dried one by one after pressing, so that it would be very fast, and it would all be dried in an hour or two at most in the current season.

But in the operation, I found that the wet paper after pressing is not separated at all, and in the end it can only be separated after drying as a whole, but I am afraid that it will be tragic if it is still inseparable after drying, and all efforts will be in vain!

After two or three hours of pressing, I moved it all out of the house, and today the sea breeze outside was very good, which was very good for drying.

It's getting dark, and today's work is finally done, and I'm as tired as a dog, and I miss the bed so much that I might fall asleep as soon as I lay down.

In the afternoon of the next day, after nearly a day of drying, and thanks to the high temperature now, the stack of paper was finally dried.

After removing the water, the weight has become much lighter than yesterday, about three or four catties, which means that I got three or four catties of paper.

Although separating them one by one is more a test of eyesight and dexterity in the hands, it is much easier than separating them yesterday, and I even think it is quite fun to go to the back, and each tear has a different sense of achievement.

After finally tearing it up, it doesn't seem to be such a small stack at the beginning, and after it is loose, it is a tall stack, at least thirty centimeters high, at least saving half a year is enough!

The color of the paper I get is not the same as the snow white, close to the color of the raw material fiber, in fact, it is yellowish, or even black yellow.

In addition, it can be seen that it is relatively rough in appearance, basically yellow straw paper, and it may even be rougher than straw paper.

However, because of the messy fibers, the material is more tear-resistant, not the kind of inferior paper that breaks with a light pull, and it is not particularly hard.

It seems that we have to find a way to improve the process within the scope of our ability to make it reach a better state.

Of course, although the paper products are average, the hard work is not in vain, and I can finally say goodbye to using leaves to go to the toilet, hahahaha......!
