Volume II, Chapter 101: Despair and Hope
Drinking filtered water for a long time is not a way, before filtration is always in the ranks of dirty water, there is no clear and clean mountain spring water at all, and drinking it for a long time will cause great damage to the body.
Even if I think of a plan that can completely change the status quo, this plan is too big to make this decision until I have to!
After the year, because there is enough food, there is no sense of urgency, which makes people even more lazy, and they do not start this year's work in the fields until the tenth day of the new year.
The scale of the new season is similar to last year, there is no need to continue to expand the area, as long as it is not lost by the typhoon before the harvest, such an area is completely sufficient, if the typhoon is too strong, it is useless to plant a large area, it will be destroyed!
However, the total area of the land has been expanded to a certain extent, and a new acre of land has been opened up next to the land that was opened up last year, which is mainly used to plant corn and peanuts, and the area of peanuts will decline this year, only about 200 square meters will be planted, and corn will be planted to more than 400 square meters, which is the same as last year.
The rest of the crops will remain on their current scale and will not be expanded, and the various crops will be planted in sequence according to the old rules, and everything will be carried out in an orderly manner.
Until the end of March, the latest sweet potatoes and potatoes were planted in the field, but the water problem came to the door again!
I thought that life would go on like this, and that I would be a little busier at best, but when the potatoes planted at the last time were planted, a rain and a new drought began.
This situation is only ordinary for me, but I am also a person who has experienced two months without rain, and it is unlikely that there will be a drought longer than that one.
As I expected, it rained again in less than two weeks, and all kinds of problems were solved, but the state of the well made me completely despair!
The well has been dry since the third day of the drought, but I didn't take it seriously, this is a normal state, and it is already its normal operation to dry up every once in a while.
But when the rain fell, the well was still dry for the past two days, the situation was different, but I still had illusions waiting for its response.
On the third day, nothing changed, and on the fourth day, on the ......, there was no new water left from the mountain wall to the well!
I know that illusions are illusions after all, and today it is shattered......
Even if the well is getting smaller and smaller, or even none, as long as it is still flowing water from the mountain wall, it will at least give me a glimmer of hope that one day it will come back to life.
Now it has dried up completely, and even the last bit of hope has been completely lost!
......
On the third day after the rain, the pool also dried up, and the continuous drought caused many cracks in it, and most of the rainwater flowed directly into the ground with the cracks, which forced me to run to the beach at the foot of the mountain to collect steam.
While I was carefully drawing seawater to collect fresh water, I was also thinking about how to get out of this predicament, especially the huge project!
There are no good options for me at the moment, and if the well is not back to normal and there is no other suitable place to drill the well, there are only two ways to go.
Neither of these paths is a good choice, especially the second one, which is too troublesome to think about!
The first way is to maintain the status quo, collect rainwater when it rains as it is now, and then rely on the swimming pool to collect some of the fresh water and filter it, so that after three or five days without rain, you can only go to the beach every day to fetch water, and then boil fresh water from the seawater.
However, this is a symptom rather than a cure, it will be a long-term work in the future, and it is also a necessary homework every day, so the scale of sheep will be further reduced due to the lack of water from time to time.
The premise is that there are no unexpected situations, such as injury and incapacitation, such as a lot of damage caused by a typhoon and a lot of time to repair, so it is not a big problem when you are usually free, but when you are busy, it will make life worse than death, not to mention injury, even just a sprain can lead to death from thirst.
There is a lot of busy time to live here, and there are few times when I am really idle in the past few years, and I am busy doing various things every day, which is still too busy!
......
The second way is to explore other islands, and if the conditions are more suitable than here, move directly, and then use two or three years to create a residence and living environment close to the existing conditions.
However, there are also prerequisites for the second road, and there is only a small island with an area of only a few acres nearby, and there is little hope that there will be enough fresh water for me and my livestock to drink every day.
The other island is similar in size to the one at your feet from a distance, and it is not excluded that it is larger, but the distance is also even farther, between fifteen and twenty kilometers.
There are many restrictions and dangers in such a distance, and it is obvious that a small raft cannot meet the requirements of such a long distance to cross the sea, not to mention that exploring the island may require countless round trips, at least once in two or three days to feed the chickens and sheep.
At this time, it makes people feel that keeping livestock in captivity is a very troublesome thing, as if people are chained to their homes, and in one sentence it is described as "you can walk, but you can't go too far, or I will die to show you"!
So considering the safety and the fact that it is not a disposable tool, and that it requires reuse back and forth, various conditions forced me to build a larger, more manoeuvrable, buoyant and moderately sized boat before I could take the next step in exploring the island.
Between the two options, I prefer the first option, it took years to clear such a large area of land, and the house took a lot of time to build, and I haven't lived there for two years.
There are also sheep and pheasants that can provide meat at any time, and it is really difficult for me to give up here for a while, and it is also risky to go to another island more than ten kilometers away!
......
But given the tediousness and uncertainty of boiling fresh water every day, I decided to explore the two islands further as an alternative.
If there were miraculous fresh water on the island two kilometers away, it would be possible for people and animals to live on it, crops would still be grown on the island today, and the main area of activity would still be on the island.
But I think the hope is very slim, looking at its scale, it is difficult to have traces of fresh water, if there is no fresh water on the small island, you can only hope for the big island in the distance, and at the same time, the risk will increase countless times!
The idea is very clear, the next step is to prepare before the action and make steady progress according to the plan, the first of which requires almost no work, only the collection of fresh water to solve the daily needs, and the main workload will be concentrated on shipbuilding before the exploration of the island.
First of all, this is a very complicated problem, unlike driving in the river, the waves on the surface of the sea are the biggest problem, which requires not only the size of the boat to be larger, but also to increase the degree of solidity by at least two levels.
The surface of the river or lake is as smooth as a landscape, and a few logs tied with a few barks or vines can provide enough buoyancy to go a long way with a light stroke.
The conditions in the sea are ever-changing, and when the weather conditions are bad, it can produce large waves of one or two meters or even higher, and there is also the fear of falling into the water to feed sharks or crocodiles!
Considering all the issues that need to be considered, it is imperative to study the size and structure of the ship, as well as the power mode, so as to facilitate the next step of collecting various materials, otherwise a lot of useless work will be done.
As a result, for the next day or two, I spent almost all the time in my room, writing and drawing on the various styles and structures of the ship, which looked like a design master was working on a selfless creation.
It's a bit of a comedy if you look at it closely.,The things drawn on the paper may only be known by myself.,It's completely based on the idea of scribbling.,After all, we're not a design graduate.,Your own signature can make people ugly and cry!
......
In the end, there were three or four plans that passed the preliminary review, and several of them were only the first draft and imperfect, and there were various shortcomings, but they were very clear in my mind, so they were eliminated one by one, and in the end only one was left.
This scheme is the most difficult to build, but the advantage is that it is sturdy and very labor-saving when traveling, because I chose this ship type because of the word labor-saving.
Once the basic style has been decided, it is time to start collecting materials for the ship, and there must be a lot of materials needed to build a ship that can move on the sea, and at the same time, there are many requirements.
First of all, because it is necessary to ensure sufficient buoyancy in the seawater, the wet trees that are cut down are definitely not usable, not only can they not be carried, but even if they are thrown into the water, they are only faint.
This was done with dry wood that had been blown down and dried by typhoons in the past, and thanks to the strong typhoon that had knocked down about a third of the island's trees the year before, many trees thicker than the mouth of the bowl were broken and even uprooted.
Dry timber wasn't everywhere, but it was more than enough to assemble a small ship!
In the selection of wood, I strictly follow the uniform size, each one should be more than four meters long, more than 20 centimeters in diameter, and at the same time, it must be straight and free of decay.
Although it is difficult to carry each of these sizes, it is also necessary to pay for the safety of the sea in the future, and the more you prepare in advance, the less likely it is to have problems when using it!
It's not so simple to improve the ship that went to sea, and it's almost the same to rebuild!
......
The collection of shipbuilding materials continued until the beginning of April, and it seemed that there was one last trouble to be solved before the ship could be built, otherwise it would be almost impossible to concentrate on shipbuilding by the sea.
Later, I spend a lot of time working on the beach, and I am basically resident at the beach, and the huge threat of two crocodiles is obviously not in my style.
Thinking of this, I can only sigh deeply, if there is no problem with the well, these two crocodiles can be kept for a long time, and they will be solved when there is a shortage of meat in the future, the best of both worlds.
Unfortunately, the problem of the well forced me to find a solution, and without a stable source of water, surviving here for a long time would directly escalate the difficulty of survival from normal mode to hell mode.
This time the crocodile will no longer be hunted for the purpose of obtaining fish meat, of course, the crocodile meat will definitely be collected, it is a pity that such good meat is wasted.
