Volume 2 Chapter 181 Drying Salt
In the following days, I was completely able to relax and do nothing until the Chinese New Year, and there was basically not much pressure in life at this time.
But after a few days of rest, I consciously got busy again and continued to attack the road, and I am only about halfway to the overall goal, and the task is still very difficult.
This work continued until the beginning of December, adding almost two kilometers to the road and bringing the length of the island's wide road to six kilometers!
The length of 6,000 meters is barely two-thirds of the length of the island, and even if there are many roads that stretch around the island, the length of the circumference around the island is more than half.
I believe that next year another month of hard work, it should not be a problem to build a fast road on the island for a week, and the day of riding a bicycle on the island for a week is estimated to be not too far away!
But now I had to stop working, not only was I physically and mentally tired, but I also had other things to do, and the salt in the house was gone.
The issue of salt has not been mentioned for many years, and the trouble of making salt is a common topic, and the way of boiling salt in seawater has been continued to be used.
So far there is no better way to solve it, or improve the efficiency of collecting salt.
After all, it was hard to cook slowly in a pot as fast as I expected, and the need to stay in front of the fire at all times was disgusting, especially since many things were made easier by the troubles of the past.
What's even more troublesome is that scrapping one or two pieces of pottery every time you boil salt is almost a norm, and it's strange if you don't scrap one at any time!
Making pottery is exactly one of the things that I think is quite troublesome, not only does it have to go back to the island to bring back the clay, but the success rate of making it is only about 50%, and the cycle is also long.
All these conditions have prompted me to improve the way I collect salt, which was too backward.
Man is a very hard-working animal, he can be busy in order to make life better, but at the same time he is also lazy, and always wants to invent some more concise ways of doing things to reduce his working time so that he can be lazy.
......
I don't know when I started to work big projects, and the way to solve many problems has changed from treating the symptoms rather than the root cause to solving the root causes.
The same is true of salt, and after careful consideration I decided to start a project, thinking of drying salt --- same method that has been used for thousands of years.
If you dig a salt pan by the sea, you don't have to worry about this bit of salt at all, and the difference in output can be described as a world of difference, far from being comparable to boiling salt slowly!
After realizing the importance and convenience of the salt pans, I seemed a little anxious, and felt that every extra day of waiting was a huge loss.
But no matter how eager there is, there is always an inevitable problem, and that is the choice of the location of the salt pan.
The salt pans are similar to cellars and fishing traps, and the correct location of them has played a role in getting twice the result with half the effort, and at the same time, there are not many obstacles encountered when starting the work.
Eventually, after two laps around the beach, it was decided to dig the salt pans directly on the edge of the beach near the woods, and I also wanted better terrain conditions, but unfortunately I didn't.
Unsurprisingly, I found a location and started work, but the result was not good at all.
Just one day of digging was interrupted by a heavy rain that drenched me like a chicken in soup, which was commonplace, and there was nothing to say about it, but this rain completely changed the original plan!
A heavy rain only lasted about two hours, and it was annoying to miss work and get wet again, but I would love to be thankful for the rain.
Because this rain has proved that the practicality of digging salt pans is not at all, and without it, I would have been digging stupidly, and then I would have suffered another thunderbolt......
After the rain, it was found that not a drop of water was left in the big pit dug for a day, and the rain was not small, and the normal puddles were full of water.
The problems that arise are almost unsolvable, and there is no possibility of salvage.
......
This means that no matter how much water I carry into the sea, it will be the same situation as at this time, and if I can't accumulate water, I can't collect the natural salt, and the salt will flow away with the leaking water.
In fact, this problem should be taken into account in normal times, the sea sand itself can quickly filter out the water, but it is only the salt pans that get carried away that causes this phenomenon to occur.
Unlike the excitement before the beginning, there was a little frustration after the blow, after all, there were high hopes for the method of drying salt in the salt pan, but the result was not satisfactory.
But I'm not going to be overwhelmed by this little difficulty, there are always more ways than difficulties!
There is no doubt that the method of drying salt in the salt field has a history of thousands of years from ancient times to the present, so the method is feasible, but whether there can be a workaround in the specific operation.
Thinking about the solution to this puzzle didn't last long, and after only three minutes a new idea came up, and the success rate was much higher than before.
Of course, the construction process is much more difficult, because it was considered as one of the alternatives a long time ago, but it was rejected due to the workload!
The new solution is stone, since the seepage of the ground does not work, it is natural to find a non-permeable material as a site for drying salt.
There are not many stones on the island, especially the huge stones, two of which are similar to houses, and one large stone has a fairly flat top, so you don't have to worry about falling off when you sleep on it.
My goal was a large, flat stone with a size, size, and proximity to the sea.
If the excavation goes well, it will be the place where I will use to dry salt in the future, but it is impossible to dig a salt pan more easily, and I will have to work as a coolie for a while!
......
As I can tell from all the times I have expanded the well, the process of digging stones is not a simple task, and it requires not only a lot of physical strength, but also a lot of time.
My heart is refusal, but in order to completely solve the trouble of salt, I have to do it, life is like this, there are always many troubles that cannot be refused......
In principle, I know that I can succeed 100%, but the only thing I worry about is whether I can persevere in the process of digging!
In this way, with mixed feelings and expectations for Yantian, the construction officially began.
As for the process, it can only be described as painful and happy, and the pain naturally describes the difficulty of digging, and the workload is much more than digging ten wells, so it is a happy point not to have to dig carefully.
The joy is that there is good progress every day, and watching the final success get closer and closer, my heart is naturally filled with joy.
In general, this stone is a stone with a history, and some small modifications have been made over time, so that its surface is not as strong as expected, and it has a little weathering feeling.
This has helped me a lot, and if I didn't have this layer of weathered stone to relieve the pressure, I'm afraid I would have to add at least three days to the current level, or more.
After the surface is weathered, the speed increases by more than 20%, and an average area of one square meter can be excavated every day.
Of course, this is also related to the depth of my excavation, not to say the volume of a cube, just the area of one square, in addition to the surrounding only in the middle of the depth of about 20 centimeters, after all, it is difficult to dry if the digging is too deep and the sea water is too much!
Therefore, on average, an area of 20 centimeters deep is excavated every day, which is really not big, but it also takes a lot of effort.
Two weeks later, I felt that I might have overestimated my perseverance and ability, and most of the rest of the time was spent on this boulder except for two or three days due to a weather break.
As a result, only nearly ten square meters were excavated, which is only half of the top of the boulder......
I am not prepared to continue this difficult work, not only because of physical and mental exhaustion, but also because of contentment.
......
Most of the projects are designed to meet my daily needs in terms of scale and size, and Yantian is no exception, although I would like to chisel out the top of the whole boulder because of OCD, but the area is completely sufficient.
Ten square meters of salt pan can be loaded with at least tons of seawater, and more than 20 catties of salt can be obtained at one time, which can fully meet the demand!
After all, we also have to consider the problem of loading water, the sea water will not flow into it on its own, and no matter how large the area of excavation is, I need to carry buckets from the sea and climb the ladder to the top of the stone and pour it in.
After being satisfied with the excavated area, in addition to stopping the excavation, there are some other finishing touches, the first is to spend a day slightly leveling and cleaning the excavated bottom.
This step may not seem necessary, but it is actually very important, because the dried salt is like the dirt in the room, and the uneven ground is very difficult to collect.
Flattening the ground can greatly reduce waste, and a lot of salt in the crevices will also be swept out.
Next, I was going to the beach to fill it with water, and in my heart I said that winter is not suitable for drying salt, and it is estimated that three days is not worth the efficiency of one day in summer.
But considering that carrying water in the summer is not very friendly to me, and it has been relatively quiet lately, I still went for it.
It took a whole day to get half the depth inside, and I was glad that I didn't dig all the stones, otherwise it would have been more troublesome to draw water.
In order to verify the results faster, I only filled it with half the height, so that the drying time could be faster, and maybe it would not be full when the salt was collected in the future.
More than ten days later, when I was a little eager to wear it, the inside finally dried, and the white crystals were like the floor tiles laid on the ground, which was quite eye-catching. After sweeping each grain of salt together, there is about ten catties of weight, but these coarse salts cannot be eaten directly, and they need to be dissolved with a small amount of water to remove the inside
sediment and impurities.
It takes a little time to boil and dry it to become edible salt, and the process is more cumbersome than before, but the goal is achieved, and it no longer takes a lot of time to cook salt, and the amount of one-time is far more than before!
