Volume 2 Chapter 157 Harvesting flax
The thought of its benefits is undoubtedly tempting, but the thought of its difficulty is intimidating, at least the hot summer is not suitable for such an ambitious project.
Not long after entering the woods, my mind was successfully diverted, and several anteaters were tossing and turning in the woods, and my curiosity made me stop and move closer to them.
Originally, the purpose of coming to the woods was just to pass the time, so how could you miss a good show!
An anteater that has not been seen for a long time is attacking a large ant nest, and although the process is wild, it also has a strange beauty.
It's a pity that it can't be as fun as cats and dogs, otherwise there will be an urge to raise them!
It was a lot of fun to watch them eat, but after ten minutes there was nothing new and they set off again for the woods.
During the season when weeds grow wildly, we haven't crossed the road that was widened for a while, and the weeds have grown a lot taller, making it difficult to walk!
One of the main factors contributing to this phenomenon is the growth of life in spring and summer, the abundance of water on the island, the right climate, and the fact that we try to move forward in areas that we rarely visit on a normal day.
Only in these places can you find plants that are rarely seen, and even important crops.
On the first day, it can be said that nothing was found, but a long distance of the road was cleared for later walking, and the only thing that could be called a harvest was two pineapples.
Because of his busy and bad memory, the probability of a ripe pineapple in the woods reaching his mouth is infinitely close to zero, and occasionally finding two of them can be regarded as an alternative miracle.
As luck would have it this time, two late-ripening pineapples were found, they had been ripe for a while, but they hadn't rotted yet, but they were cheaper for me!
On the third day in the woods, the day should be the beginning of July, and summer is coming again......
The beginning of the new month was different than usual, God sent me a gift, but I didn't want to accept it!
The drastic change in meteorological conditions is a sign that a new typhoon is coming, and it is a gift from God.
Living on the island for a long time, typhoon --- is almost a long-term topic, and it is strange not to come twice a year!
......
The first typhoon of the year has only now been considered quite benevolent, and it has started as early as May.
Even if the impact of most typhoons is small, in view of the huge damage caused by a small number of typhoons, I basically treat each typhoon the same, and I dare not slack off.
Aside from all the preparations and hiding in the house, the only thing to worry about is corn and flax, which are already over a metre tall and can easily be pinned to the ground in high winds.
Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to reinforce them at all.
The typhoon came very quickly, faster than ninety percent of previous typhoons, and it was almost three or five hours from the discovery to the wind force of seven or eight outside the house, and it was completely caught off guard!
As the typhoon gets closer, so does the wind and rain outside, especially when only the wind howling outside can be heard.
I'm not worried about the quality of the house, I've been through one or two super typhoons and I've dispelled my worries about it, especially since it's safer without glass!
Two days later, the center of the typhoon was finally far away from the nearby sea, and I was finally able to come out of the house again, and I was stuck in the room for three days, and it was not too comfortable to eat, drink, and laze inside.
The power of this typhoon can only be regarded as decent, and it cannot make people have obvious fear psychologically, after all, they will naturally become accustomed to seeing a lot of strong winds and waves.
But the damage it caused is not too small, and recently it is a very important stage for various crops, and corn has reached my height.
The trees outside have fallen a lot more than before the typhoon, even if it only reaches one percent of the total, because the total amount is too large!
The absence of much loss in the woods could not give me much comfort, and I rushed towards the crops as soon as I went out, and my eyes were only concerned about the loss in the fields and nothing else.
When I was halfway through the run, I could see the situation in the field, and at this time, my heart was half cold, and a large piece of ground seemed to have fallen.
Along the way, my heart was extremely heavy, and even if I encountered the experience of being hit by typhoons many times in recent years, I could not calm down.
It's like I knew it hurt when I was hurt when I was hurt before, but now I still hurt when I get a minor injury, and my heart hurts again.
Two-thirds of the corn fell, and all the flax fell to the ground, as if it had been cut and laid on the ground!
......
The results can't be said to be good, but they can't be said to be bad either.
If you work hard, you should be able to reduce the loss to about half, that is, half of the loss.
It seems that the next two days will inevitably have to work in the fields, clearing the other half of the corn, feeding the sheep and lifting the corn, which is a bad aspect.
On the one hand, the flax is relatively tough, and it is pressed to the ground without repeated swaying, as long as it is lifted up, most of them can live.
What's more, the flax itself is about to ripen, so most of the rest can be harvested, except for about one-tenth of the ones that are in better condition, which will be held up for the next season.
Although it may be a little worse than the yield of a fully mature state, it is large enough that the slightest difference is not worth paying attention to, and it is piled up outside the house.
The other crops were not as affected as these two crops, with nearly one-fifth of the greens lost and more than half of the peppers that grew were knocked off the ground.
But their losses don't have much effect, the greens on the ground can be used to feed the sheep, and the larger peppers can still be cooked.
Overall, the luck is not bad, last year itself was a rare bumper harvest of corn, and today's loss of half will not cause a big hole!
Sometimes the mentality is like that, when you are angry, a small thing can make people angry.
But when I am calm, often the situation is very serious but I can calm down quickly, and in the end, the big thing is small, and the small thing is small, maybe after experiencing the life and death of the shark crisis, my mentality is sublimated......
Of course, no matter how calm you are, what you should do is still what you have to do, and the first thing you need to do after the typhoon is to lift up the corn that has fallen and is still saved, and if you miss the best time, you will really be helpless.
This year's corn area is two-thirds of the acre, and because of the large total area, it is not so easy to clean up.
In the past, there were about 1,000 corn trees in half an acre, but now the total number has reached 1,500 trees, and there are 1,000 trees that have fallen to the ground!
After the number comes up, even if the steps are very simple, most of them can be directly cleared and fed to the sheep when they fall, which also makes people's heads big.
After all, there are nearly 300 trees that need to be lifted, and each one has to check its status and fix it with a few branches, which is extremely troublesome.
......
Fortunately, the area where the flax needs to be lifted is very small, and it only took an hour to solve the problem, and the main job is to carry most of it home.
Flax has a short growth cycle, a little shorter than corn, and it only takes about 100 days to mature, and the advantage of such a short period is that there is a lot of time to use it to make clothes at home in the summer.
This typhoon brought the flax that was supposed to be harvested a week later ahead of schedule, and the consequence was that the busy time was brought forward!
I had to harvest the flax that had fallen on the ground and it seemed that I would be busy for a while afterwards, because with flax I might start making a lot of its merchandise.
But don't think about it so much, first take all the flax back home, and then say, after the materials are in place, it is always up to you to decide when to start!
The shape of the flax when it grows taller is a bit like a sesame stalk, but it is much shorter, and most of the flax in the field is only about a meter high.
Unlike the jute grown at home when I was a child, jute is similar to rape, and the height can be close to two meters, resulting in a particularly tall impression of flax for a long time, until I really found flax and realized that I thought too much.
But the advantage of linen is that the material is better, especially in terms of softness.
Plants are usually harvested by cutting them with a sickle along the roots and tying them up one by one, but hemp is more elaborate because if it is cut from the roots, it will waste five to ten centimeters of length in the ground.
So I can only take the trouble to pull them out of the ground one by one, and when there is a fist in my hand, I will tie them into a bundle and throw them on the ground.
Sometimes the idea in my head is very idealistic, but in practice, it is not the same at all, such as the current me......
At first, I was very honest and pulled out of the ground one by one, but the result was that I was sweating profusely after a while, and occasionally a tough hemp rod could not be pulled up for half a day.
After a long time, there were a few more blood blisters on my hands, and when I saw that the temperature was so high now, I gave up, even if I lost some, I was willing!
So thinking of being lazy, I gave up the way of continuing to pull one by one, and instead cut it directly from the root with a sickle.
Although the cost is the loss of some of the flax, it is not without benefits, not only saving strength, but also more time.
Compared with the efficiency and speed of pulling, it is directly several times faster, and it can be cut and tied in a minute, and the operation that could have taken three or four days to complete is only one and a half days and effortless.
I don't know exactly how much hemp is in half an acre of land, because it is completely different from corn and peanuts, and it is not calculated by weight, so there is no way to estimate it.
But at least it will be enough to make all kinds of textile products, such as clothes and fabrics, after all, most of my time is busy with other things, and even if I am given a few hundred tons of hemp, I can't make a few clothes.
The cut hemp was not transported back immediately, but was dried in the ground for two days until there was a dryness of six or seven percent, and then all of them were transported back.
The matter is not over, it is necessary to threshing the flaxseed as soon as possible, and the flaxseed that is not fully ripe is not very useful, but it also needs to be threshed first.
I don't want to peel flax and drop flaxseed all the time!
