Volume I, Chapter 43, Keeping the Flock in Captivity

Recently, all kinds of crops in the vegetable field have been growing very well, and I feel a great sense of accomplishment at a glance.

After two or three months of seedling growth, all kinds of crops are now thriving, especially the greens that are about 100 square meters in total, and they look lush.

Now its supply far exceeds my demand, and it's a pity that the extra is wasted.

The abundant supply of green vegetables has made my diet much more reasonable recently, at least I can achieve a combination of meat and vegetables, and it is not as monotonous as simple meat at every meal before!

In June, with the arrival of the season, the sun is not as mild as it used to be, and it begins to become fierce, and if you don't wear a hat or wet mud, your skin will get sunburned in half a day.

This has increased the inconvenience of going out, and the sunshine and the high temperature of about 35 degrees Celsius have changed the patrol along the island from once a week to once every 10 days to half a month.

This is normal, but if you are busy with other things, it will be longer, and if you are free, the interval may be shortened.

Fishing as a recreational activity has also stopped since the launch of the sea last month, and summer fishing is not a matter of cultivating emotions but more of a torture.

If you want to get meat, you only need to catch fish once in a while and go to the sea to catch seafood.

After watching the healthy growth of various crops in the field, all aspects are on the right track, and there is a little slack.

This style of acting may also be related to the individual's personality, there is no heroism in the mind, and some are lazy and lazy, holding the mentality of eating and waiting for death.

After waking up, I was reminding myself that there are still big challenges now, and I can't be so lazy!

......

Since I came to the island, especially in the last few months, due to the lack of food and the singleness, I have almost changed from a burly man to a pork rib essence.

Although the recuperation after sufficient food this year has improved, and the muscles have increased to a certain extent, I still lose a lot of weight compared to before I went to the island!

The judgment of one's body is that long-term malnutrition causes the body to be prone to fatigue, and the physical strength is not as good as before, and the state of energy is better, but it seems to be of little use to ordinary life.

The point is that the mutton that killed the sheep for the New Year has been wiped out by me, and I am playing the idea of a sheep again!

In order to make it survive for a longer period of time, in addition to the two meals when the sheep was just killed and the New Year, almost all of them were very economical later, and it was not more than a pound to eat once a few days, but now it has to face the problem of mutton supplementation after eating it all.

And after catching a sheep and eating mutton, the obsession with mutton is even stronger......

Two days ago, I saw the sheep again in the woods, and this year's lambs have been born, and three lambs have been added at one time, and now the total size of the sheep has reached seven.

Once again, my mind went to the flock, only this time the radical strategy changed.

After experiencing the hardships of sheep hunting last year, I don't plan to catch sheep slowly as in the past, but plan to build a sheepfold to raise sheep in captivity, once and for all!

The decision to keep sheep in captivity was based on three considerations: first, it was too time-consuming to go to the woods to catch sheep every time I needed them, and there were also safety risks.

Once or twice can ensure that nothing happens, there is a saying that "always walk by the river, how can you not get your shoes wet", in case you fall from a tree one day it is not a good thing.

It is not impossible to break a leg or die on the head for two days

Second, now that the greens have reached a certain scale, plus corn and weeds in the woods, there is some confidence to ensure that the food needs of several sheep can be met.

Thirdly, even if I am tired, but I can improve the survival rate of the lambs, not only this year, but also in the future, I want to increase the number of sheep as soon as possible to meet the demand, five or six sheep is still too few, especially a few lambs among them.

Captive sheep have to build a sheepfold, which must also be done before the sheep are captured, it is impossible to catch the sheep back and directly use a rope to put it on the stump, then it is a little too inhumane, after all, the temperature is so high now!

After careful consideration, I chose a location less than 10 meters from the house and less than 10 meters from the mountain wall, not far from the crops.

The reason for this is that I don't want to go to bed at night and hear bleating, and I'm not interested in falling asleep to their singing.

After a short thought about the materials and shape of the sheepfold, I decided that it would be impossible to build a separate room for them, and I had no idea of that.

At the same time, I also felt that it was not suitable to be kept in captivity in a room, so I could achieve the purpose by making a circular stump wall and enclosing it in an empty frame.

Seeing that the weather is getting hotter and hotter, it is no longer suitable for such a job.

But considering that the island is cooler than the three or five months of winter, the temperature is high for most of the year, and if you don't do these jobs in early June, you don't know if you want to live a better life in the Year of the Monkey!

The temperature on the island is indeed high, which has affected normal production and life, basically exceeding 30 degrees since June, and often approaching about 35 degrees.

This temperature will last until the beginning of October before dropping again to less than 30 degrees, which is more than 100 days in these four months, a third of the year!

......

The first is the preparation of materials, which is probably the most troublesome and time-consuming step in building a sheepfold, as more wood is required than it is to build a house.

This time, I tried to use the trunk of the tree that had been blown down by the typhoon but had not decayed, which was not only lighter to carry up the mountain, but also made the woods more tidy by the way, which was conducive to walking in it.

Although the process was arduous, more than 200 pieces of wood were collected after five days, which was not too large in size.

According to the pre-planned construction size of the sheepfold, it should be enough, if it is not enough, it can only be reduced a little.

Each branch and trunk collected was directly chopped with an axe to a length of about two meters before being carried up the mountain, and I believe that thirty centimeters into the ground, and a height of one meter seven on the ground should be an insurmountable difficulty for sheep!

All the stumps were required to be more than arm's length in diameter, too thin I didn't choose, to be honest I had a new understanding of their destructive power after coming into contact with the sheep, they are not a pack of docile little sheep!

A rain delayed the construction process, and it was not until two days later that the official construction began.

The time spent collecting the stakes in five days was not wasted, and one end of each stake was sharpened on the spot to minimize the weight of carrying up the mountain, so the piling work is now extremely easy.

I smashed a sharpened stake into the ground one by one according to the large circle I had drawn with plant ash, and the distance between each stake was about twenty centimeters, and I was not worried about the lambs at all, even if they did, they would enter again at the call of the sheep.

In fact, it is similar to the fence of the vegetable field in the past, but the requirements are stricter and the size is more regular.

After the stump was laid, the long branches with a length of three or four meters, but only four or five centimeters in diameter, were tied to all the stumps in two places.

It is also for insurance that the horns of the sheep will hit hard, and the stump that will be driven into the ground will be due to the problem of bearing capacity

It will be knocked crooked and useless.

I don't want to go to the woods to catch sheep twice in three days, that's crazy!

Finally, it is necessary to leave a door with a width of 60 or 70 centimeters in the direction of the house for entry and exit, after all, it is necessary to feed and feed them every day, as well as to sweep sheep dung, etc., and it is impossible to climb directly over the wall with a height of 1.7 meters.

The last door is also a whole wooden door made of several stumps and tied to the stake on the side of the opening, and its weight is very large, so it also causes some inconvenience in opening and closing.

But for the time being, I haven't thought of a better production process and method, so I can only do it first!

It took another two days to build the sheepfold and the gate, which was already very fast, and it only took ten days for the whole sheepfold to be built from collecting materials to being built. This also affects the progress of the work due to the relatively high temperature and rain.

Now this season is obviously not as casual as spring and winter, and I am also worried about heat stroke when I do things.

If you suffer from heat stroke during high-intensity physical labor, I don't even have a bottle of Huoxiang Zhengqi Water and other means to relieve it, I'm afraid I can only say goodbye to this world, so I must be more cautious in doing things in summer, especially in hot weather!

The area of the sheepfold is about 30 square meters, which is already a relatively spacious area, and I think it should not be a big problem to feed ten sheep.

And because of the material of the stake, if the size of the flock is further expanded in the later stage, there is room for improvement.

Originally, after the sheepfold was built, I wanted to go directly to catch the sheep, but when I thought that the sheep did not even have a shelter from the wind and rain, and the temperature was so high now, I was worried about their survival and decided to make a straw shed.

The straw hut will certainly not be as careful as the sheepfold, and it will be much more perfunctory, and because the cave has made a straw hut, it will be more handy, and it will take less than two days to collect wood and leaves, and then build it quickly.

The area of the grass shed is only six or seven square meters, and the height is about one meter six, the reason why it is so low is because there is more wind on the island, and lower means better safety.

The problem of sheep fecal excrement was also in consideration, and I dug a large pit about one square meter and more than one meter deep a few meters away from the sheepfold to use as a manure tank.

Then a sewage ditch with a width and depth of 20 cm was dug from the low-lying part of the sheepfold, so that after each cleaning, it could be swept directly into the ditch to be washed away by sheep urine or water, and it was also saved from being transported slowly.

After the sheep manure is collected together, it can also be used as fertilizer to exert its role, which can be said to be huge, which can alleviate my lack of fertilizer to a certain extent.

In addition, I put two brooms in my room, one for cleaning the sheepfold, and the preparatory work was over, and the more difficult task was to let them in!
