Chapter 295: The Law of the Jungle (Leopard Girl)
Zyra's memories are as deep as the roots of the earth. Her race was in the Rune Wars, a time when human armies fought for the power of creation.
The Garden of Thorns is hidden in the jungles of the ancient south of Kumanggu, between the watersheds that divide Dongshurima into several pieces. Elemental magic alters the soil in magical and unpredictable ways, giving birth to ferocious carnivorous plants. They parasitize and devour any creature lost in the Garden of Thorns, ignoring human suffering in order to spread their vines to every corner of forests and wetlands. All carnivorous plants are called "Zyra", and even in the midst of war, they still have no shortage of nutrients to grow.
A small group of soldiers roamed the land, searching for the lost treasures. No one knows who their allegiance is, only that they are led by a witch intent on changing the world - they have traveled far from home to this cursed land, and a malevolent miasma and poisonous spores await them in front of them.
The people of the garden struck from all directions, curling vines effortlessly piercing through their armor, brutally stabbing into their flesh and sucking their nourishment. The warriors fought hard, but they knew they wouldn't be able to hold out for long. The group looked at the witch for help, and she gathered her strength and sent out a powerful shockwave. The rune sigil appeared in midair, and the air began to burn, bursting with three eerie rays of light just as the thorns were about to rush up from all directions.
In an instant, a spark ignited the swamp gas in the wetlands, and a massive explosion caused by magic wiped out all living things within a radius of miles. The survivors of the Rune Wars were scattered all over the world, and no one knew what had happened to the devastated Garden of Thorns.
Centuries have passed like this. The land that was once ravaged by magic is now barren and lifeless, but deep underground, something is still moving. At that time, the energy released tends to settle down, and gradually condenses into nutrients that are enough to nourish the growth of living beings. The surface of a seed begins to agitate, and it seems that life is being nurtured in defiance of the laws of nature. A creature gasped, slicing through the seed with its sharp nails, breaking free from the shell that held it inside, and looking around with curiosity.
It sees a world that is no longer complete, but ever-changing. It naturally felt an endless stream of life force and thoughts, and its heart drew from the earth beneath its feet all sorts of conflicting memories, which were overbearingly infused into its fledgling consciousness. It remembered the warmth of the sun, the smell of rain, the impact of power, and the pain of the hundred soldiers who had fallen here.
It—she—called herself Zyra, though she didn't understand why it was that.
When Zyra leaves her birthplace and travels to another unknown wasteland, she knows that she is very different from the creatures she has encountered. Humans were intimidating and unpleasant to her, and those creatures that enjoyed near-eternal lifespans were either perverse or arrogant. They have no respect for the land they live in, selfishly abusing and destroying the nature that gives birth to all things, and their actions not only despise Zyra, but also fill her heart with anger. Everywhere Zyra went, new life was bound to bloom, and strangely enough, it wasn't of her will - the plants greedily sucked up nutrients and evolved under her watch, then hurled poisonous thorns around them at breakneck speed, wrapping tendrils around other creatures.
Zyra roams the rune-lands, the seeds she sows greedily absorbing all life in her vicinity. She has destroyed countless farmlands and even directly encroached on human settlements. The warriors who tried to resist were just a bunch of fools before her, thorns of thorns everywhere she went.
As the waters of Shurima began to flow again, clusters of flowers appeared on the banks of the river, which slowly expanded westward with the change of seasons. Whether uprooted or fired, their growth rate does not seem to slow down
Far beyond the harsh terrain of the Great Shash Desert, even beyond the savanna plains and mountain grasslands, lies the only vast jungle in the Shurima Continent. It's full of mystery, nurturing countless lives, and it's a place where so much wildlife depends. However, while the beauty of this jungle is always awe-inspiring, its beauty also comes with danger and death.
No one knows why Nedri is alone in the depths of the jungle. The little baby sat alone in tattered clothes in the fertile soil covered with fallen leaves, her cries echoing through the trees.
The only thing that is certain is that it is her cry that attracts the cougars who live in this jungle.
A lioness wanders through the jungle with her child, and they creep up to the baby girl, who had been abandoned by her parents, perhaps because they smelled something similar in her or because they thought the baby girl was worth living. The lioness did not hesitate to treat Nedri as one of her kind, dragging her while leading the cubs back to their lair.
The girl lives with the beasts of the jungle, plays and grows up with her siblings, and has no contact with the mortal or human world. The cougar raised Nedri as a jungle animal, and over the years, Nedri grew into a hunter with excellent hunting skills – and with her family preferring to use their minions, Nedri woke up to the natural environment around her. She extracts the ingredients of honey berries and makes ointments; Pick the glowing Flower of Truth to light up the night, or even use the Exploding Cones to scare off the wolves in the jungle.
However, even though there have never been any episodes in Nedri's life, there are times when she feels like her body is about to lose control. One day, without warning, her limbs began to flicker and flicker into the form of a beast. Since then, Nedri has often had a high fever in her sleep and frequently spouts incomprehensible babble. Two unidentified human figures appeared in front of her—whispering to each other, and though they couldn't hear clearly, she could feel the beauty in the words. They give Nedri a warm and cozy feeling, even though the cougar has always taught her to be wary of outsiders.
This is not without reason.
Nedri's first encounter with the Kirash was someday after the anomaly, at the height of the summer rains. The Vastaya hunters come to the forest every year to hunt, and in their culture, the more ferocious the beast they hunt, the more they show their strength. Nedri's mother cougar tries to fight back, but is wounded by their blades and spears.
Just as the Chilash were about to finish off the aged cougar, Nedri let out a cry of grief and leaped from the bushes. At this time, a certain force awakened. The spirit of the cougar was stirring inside her, and it changed her appearance in a way she had never seen before. Nedri swung her claws in beast form, instantly knocking down the Kirash closest to her, and she immediately retreated into her humanoid form, snatching the spear from his hand with one hand. The other Kiras let out angry howls and strange hissing noises when they saw this. To Nedri's surprise, she understood most of the meaning.
They cursed her in the name of the ancestor of Vastasilai-Vastaya. After that, the Kirash chose to leave empty-handed, without further counterattack.
Nedri set the spear aside and hugged the dying cougar in her arms. The lions cautiously approached them, and with their mother gone, the surviving cougars accepted Nedri as their leader – and from that day on, Nedri swore to defend the jungle and fight back against any enemies who tried to invade it.
As the days passed, Nedri finally learned the ropes of mastering the power in her body and was able to switch between the two forms effortlessly. Perhaps Nedri's desire to find her fellow citizens was destined for her encounter with Niko. There was a time when the relationship between the two became inseparable. Nedri enjoys mentoring her new companion who is curious about the world, and together they explore the jungle and discover countless surprises. In the end, however, Niko chose to leave the coastal region of Shurima to pursue her own destiny.
Until now, this jungle is still the last uncivilized secret in the world, and even Nedri cannot understand the mysteries of it. In the dead of night, Nedri is also often mired in the mystery of her origins – whether her encounter with the Kirash means anything – and whether she can discover the truth behind it
